How to Change Engine Oil and Filter on Toyota Rav4 Prime

In this video I show you how to change oil on a Toyota Rav4 Prime. It might be similar to a Hybrid as well. This service should be performed every 10k miles according to service booklet.
Torque:
Drain Plug = 30 ft-lbs
Oil Filter = 7.5NM

Change your oil at 5K. I use a Wix oil filter.

I change it according to manufacturer spec and I stand by it since this is a PHEV and uses synthetic oil.

Toyota wants you to change the oil every 10k miles, just long enough till the warranty runs out. After that, you have a greater chance of building up sludge in the engine that they won't cover. Change it more frequently.

You're out of your mind to let it go for 10k mile oil change intervals. No way. How much does it cost to do an oil / oil filter change? I'm doing mine EVERY 5k miles AFTER a 1k mile break-in change.

I guess Toyota engineers are out of their mind then. This vehicle was engineered for 10k oil changes and many of their other vehicles. If you run it in EV mode most of the time then even more reason the oil will be fine after 10k. Your Toyota Care is only going to change your oil every 10k. You are wasting your money. It costs about $70 to do oil change.

What’s funny, is there is a Toyota master mechanic who does highly recommend you change the oil way before 10k miles. With that said, you have a great point that you’re not using the engine a lot when you have the PRIME, I wouldn’t risk it regardless, personally. Totally agree! My engine fires up so infrequently that I'm basically replacing oil/filter with a couple of hundred miles on it. My 47 miles per charge gets me everywhere around Oahu and to/from work nicely. @@HadesOmega

I drive my RAV4 prime around 10K miles every 6 months, but 75% of mileages is on EV mode. Do I have to change oil evey 10k miles? Can I do it at 15k or yearly?

According to the manual you do. Even if you mostly use EV mode water can build up in the crankcase if you aren't regularly running the engine. Only way to really tell is to do an oil analysis.

10,000 oil changes will ruin vehicle in the long run, change it 4000 miles, i buy my oil at walmart full synthetic and filters on rockauto not that expensive, i spend about $32 per oil change!

Every 10k miles is too long brother. Oil is cheap, and engines are costly. Great job overall. 👍

Oil is not cheap that was the most expensive part of the oil change. The vehicle is engineered for 10k mile intervals oil change with synthetic oil. That's what it says in the service guide. You are not using the internal combustion engine nearly as much on a plugin hybrid.

There's a reason why Toyota's last a long time and it's because of their engineering. I've had several Toyotas go past 200k miles using the service intervals in the manual.

I only use less 1k out of my 10k. Other 9K is EV mile. Rav4 Prime use less engine than regular hybrid. For my car, I intend to change oil every 15K because I know the engine actual mileage

Oil is not cheap you are wasting your money especially for a plugin hybrid which engine does not work as hard. This is not your grandad's car welcome to modern automobile tech engineering.

The only way to be sure is to do an oil analysis and see how much the oil has broken down. Synthetic oils last longer than regular oil. It even says it on the oil box that it protects for 10k miles.
