2019-23 Silverado Tailgate Swap, Plug but no Play.....Now I need your Help!!!

Found this in a forum: I just did a multi-pro swap for my 22 Silverado and it was relatively easy. Luckily all of the wiring and relays were there for the minor gate. For starters I cut the ground wire to the mid gate switch. I needed to get 12V to this. (I know I am talking ground and 12V, but stay with me here...) At the Chassis side of the tailgate harness there is 12V Battery at Pin 1. this was ran for trucks with the power up option. My truck had the fuse and ckt already. So I cut the lead out of the connector and ran a new wire up through the tailgate following the factor harness and connected it to the ground side of the pin on the minor gate switch. The other end of the switch is the yellow lead that goes back to the BCM to signal the button was pressed. Again I happen to have the minor gate relays and wiring on my standard gate LTZ, so I don't know what other trims it was also there. I needed to use this new 12V ckt I made to go direct to the two relays top drop the minor gate. At the BCM I cut the Yellow switch wire (Pin X6-15) and connected it to relay outputs White/Gray (Pin X6-7) and Gray/Blue (Pin X7-7). From the BCM this relay output was power to ground. So by starting my switch at the 12V+ I just created a new ckt though the switch to the relays and down to GND. I did pull the 30A endgate fuse while I was doing all this. It all works! The only downside is when the vehicle is locked, this ckt is still powered and will open upon press. I have the factory up fitter switches too, so I think I will use one of them as a disable possibly. Should be really easy as the BCM is right below the upfitter switches. The multipro I got was the same color truck but a GMC. I still need to swap the emblems. Waiting on a good sunny warm day to make that chore a little easier.

I talked to the dealer about this a few weeks ago. They told me you'd have to either flash or completely replace the BCM but to this point no one had asked.

i have a high country 1500 2024 i have the multipro tailgate and the multi pro tailgate has to be done manually only the bigger door will open automatically, for the reason being some people may have hitch balls and having those programmed may cause to hit the hitch balls so its default to do it manually

Hold tailgate button for 3+ seconds. And it will end lock out mode. It’s a safety feature for towing.

You jut have to snip and cross two wires. Brown/black to yellow. Now you have to press the two buttons to open the second gate. Just di it on mine

You need the receiver switch It opens and closes on the hitch receiver so it doesn’t open when you have the receiver in the hitch so it doesn’t hit the ball

I miss my old truck the tailgate was perfect you open it and it falls down and you push it back up hate the tailgate on the truck I have now you have to push it down and it’s harder to close

Even swapping from the factory halogen headlamps to the factory LED headlamps you have to have the truck reflashed, so I am sure that's all it needs is a reflash from the dealership.

@@That-Silverado-Guy o also wonder if it's because it needs a switch on the dash. My dad doesn't have the multiflex tailgate but has a power open/close tailgate and there is a switch on the dash. The multiflex tailgate may have a specific switch that needs to be tied into the dash this completing it.

@thebigv8644 There is a switch on the dash on my truck that's just to open the tailgate.... multiflex tailgates to my knowledge don't have the automatic up feature, but I can be wrong

Hold the top switch for 5 seconds to unlock top portion, the lights will flash. Press again and it will open. Reverse process to lock it back. Remote needs to be close to tailgate to work. Hope this helps

There only one switch that drops the gate. Yeah, you definitely have to manually drop the small gate. I would like to go to a standard gate instead of my multiplex gate. So what I do is lockout the upper so it doesn't come down until I unlock it.

Not sure if anyone mentioned. Does your truck have keyless entry? Must have keyfob in your pocket for this to work. With keyfob you can program the lock

Hello there , I think your tailgate issue is because the multi-flex door wiring already installed but the wiring plug hole couldn’t recognize the additional wire .All you need is GM electrician guy that know how to connect them and problem solved .

@@That-Silverado-Guy just now i am searching to solve your problem and here what i found , if you already connected the wires and nothing is missing , it means your only issue is to update and program the ecu with the new tailgate , because the new one has a different harness and everyone know if we change one harness in GM cars it would need a program for anti theft safety .

@@That-Silverado-Guyof course the dealer will not give you a way to swap or upgrade to force the people to buy the new one , i own 2016 Chevrolet silverado LS trim and the dealer told me there is no way to upgrade the radio screen with the one that have apple carplay , so i found GM guy who solve my problem by cutting the wires and connecting the new wires of the radio , also he program it with GM online and it worked ! . And i apologize if i didn’t helped you with the tailgate, i gave all the information i have . but stay hope everything has a solution . 🙏🏻❤️

Yeah, I held the botton down to the upper tailgate until the taillights flash. I know my truck was unlocked at the time.

- Backup camera works 👍 - The full tailgate locks like it was the original tailgate. I'm still opening the upper part manually, and no, the dealership is playing hardball. I'm looking to take it to another dealership that might be willing to help

@masolhdez9747 camera and main gate should be plug and play depending on what your truck is, but I would suggest checking if the camera was working before you purchased the tailgate

No fix yet, especially from the dealership. There is no power at all, and the top gate is not locked. Dealership stated that it needs this whole rewire harness and bcm re program 🤷‍♂️

Yes, GMC will work. I understand the 1500 tailgate will not work on the HD, so get the correct one.

I have tried to hold the button down and do all that good stuff, especially the lock part, but unfortunately, it isn't. For now I have made a make shift manual release but it works for me

Yes, the camera worked. The only thing that didn't was the upper tailgate release

I did do a temporary fix with a manual release but I was very fortunate to have a viewer reach out and help me get it to release but so far only when the main gate opens so that right there is a big step in the right direction. Video will be coming soon!

It's a $545 upgrade when you order one from the dealership or online, but when you want to swap one at the dealership during your purchase.... good luck trying to get that price. I also purchased my vehicle used, so it didn't come with one 🤷‍♂️

They said under the dashboard or inside the tailgate. And the wire harness that runs from the front of the truck to the tailgate. I was thinking about looking for one in a wrecking yard to see what the difference was.

You will have to go into the bcm and turn on the functions for the multi tailgate or do a reflash on it. To do that you may need the vin to a vehicle that has this feature already. More than likely would have to act like your replacing the bcm an need the flash to control it. I don’t think you’ll need to get a new bcm, but I could be wrong. It’s been a while since I’ve worked for GM

I have a 22’ refresh with the multiflex tailgate but it got a hit on the top and I replaced it with a multiflex tailgate from a denali with the kicker speakers, everything is plug and play and I just finished installing it and it’s completely dead no power no camera 😞 I can’t even manually open it to take it off and put my old one back on… help plz! Lol

Everything should be plug and play other than the top release gate, at least for mine. I'm not sure if the denali with the kicker speaker system is different, which affects it not working. I would check maybe a fuse, but I'm not sure what else

I'm not sure who you purchased it from, but it sounds like if the camera and everything else is working, it will probably just need a new button as they sometimes tend to go out, but don't quote me on it.

I just bought a 24,1500 rst with the multi flex tailgate, I honestly hate the way it looks. I want to do the opposite and swap to the regular tailgate with the stamped chevrolet lol. Idk what it is, either the big ass bulge or the fact that it doesnt follow the lines of the truck... but i think its ugly as fuck.

Where’s your old tailgate? I hate my multiflex. Gets dirt hay and rock in every nook and cranny. I have used duct tape to seal it over. Had Silverados for 40 years. This 2024 is the worst of them all.
