@@Everlanders It does appear Bluewave took care of all the legwork for imaging an SD card and getting up and rolling.. My only hangup is I'd like to replace my car head unit entirely with a Pi touchscreen while retaining component level outputs to the audio amps while maintaining some sort of control over the audio processing. It's been a minute, but last time I searched, there wasn't any definitive DSP recommendation to accomplish what I'm after. I don't have the luxury of space, so I'd want to place the pi/screen essentially where my double-din factory head unit resides and there's really no other place to put a head unit for DSP purposes. The hunt continues, it appears!

Hello and thank you for documenting all of this work. I just bought myself a CarPiHat with plans to make a Raspberry Pi head unit. This is my first foray into DIY computer stuff. I need to be able to make my own GPIO jumper cables and I wanted to know what your recommendation would be. Should I buy a soldering iron and solder the tips onto the wires, or should I buy a crimping tool? Or are there other options that you prefer that I may not be aware of? I am located in southern Ontario, so we get everything from hot, humid summers, to frigid cold winters.
@Everlanders3 жыл бұрын
You can buy such cables pretty cheap with the ends on there already, this would have less risk to your Pi if you aren't comfortable soldering. Have a look through these... www.digikey.ca/en/products/filter/jumper-wire/640?s=N4IgTCBcDaIIYBM4DMBOBXAlgFwAQHdNUBTEAXQF8g

This is really useful thanks. I have some questions. 1. Are you able to make phones calls from the Raspberry Pi without connecting a phone (Android Auto)? I know there are 4G/LTE modem HATs to get full cell service, but the software needs to be able to use it. Do you know if this works? 2. If #1 is not possible, would this work if you connected a phone via Bluetooth to make calls and sends texts through the RPi (Android Auto)? 3. Lastly, do you know if it's possible to connect this RPi headunit to a car's headunit, via Bluetooth or USB, and then connect a phone to the RPi headunit, and pass through phone calls to the car's headunit? My car has steering wheel controls that I would like to use to make calls and navigate music. I know the whole idea of adding a second headunit to my car that already has a built-in headunit, which has native Android Auto support, seems redundant. But my car's USB does not provide enough power to charge my phone while connected and I want a permanent solution with an external power source (I have a 5v external power supply HAT for my RPi). If the RPi can be that solution, I could set it up as a server to connect my phone to my car's headunit, but still be able to charge it through the RPi. Any feedback on this would be helpful. Thanks!
@Everlanders4 жыл бұрын
1. Android Auto is run entirely on the phone, the screen, either this one or the one in a new car is basically just a remote touchscreen. 2. Yes 3. Yes, you can pass through Audio via Bluetooth. No idea about steering wheel controls. We don't have them.

Very interesting. Learnt a lot thanks. I'm interested in building a bezel less Pi touchscreen unit where the LCD comes as close as possible to the edges of the 2 Din area available in a vehicle car stereo cavity. The vehicles are 04 VY2 Commodore's. I want to use the original car stereo housings and pcb so its a push in fit arrangement for plugs and amplifier etc. Open Auto will be a big help software wise. I wanted to build something high spec CPU, RAM, & Flash wise because I want to run Ham Radio, and ALDL (OBD1) Apps as well. OK a lot more research to do. :)

ken where did you get to. want to so same with an 01 vx commodore ; but using a larger screen in portrait mode (like 10") in place of the double din HU and the little pocket down the bottom (under the heater controls). intend to put RPI 4 into the area where the double din unit was along with an class d amp etc. open auto only supports obd2 but GM in their infinite wisdom didn't implement that with the v6 ; it only hit the LS series ; so will need to translate the ALDL data from the interface to OBD2 spec for it to work in AA.

I’m confused as to why you would use an opto coupler to sense the presence of a 12V signal and then convert it to 5V for the GPIO?, a simple resistor divider would preform the same function, the opto is really an isolation component and I just don’t see why you use it in this application?.. or maybe I’m missing something

(1) Better safe than sorry. (2) I have a whole jar of them kicking around. (3) Automotive environments are notoriously noisy and prone to spikes...

So by using the DC-DC converter and opto isolators are you trying to isolate the PI and LCD etc from a direct connection to the vehicle supply?, thus preventing 'spikes' or noise?

Forgive me if you've covered this already as I'm still getting caught up on your back library. How easy do you think it would be to integrate battery bank / solar monitoring into this? I have an Mppsolar hybrid unit that supports remote monitoring. The BMS I picked up is very rudimentary, but I assume I could monitor voltages either with an add on board or a fancier BMS. I am envisioning a solution where I can monitor things while I'm driving, or possibly host a local server where I can check on my phone.
@Everlanders3 жыл бұрын
It is not possible, or worth the effort to try and integrate your batteries with Android Auto... far easier just to have a separate server running on a different Pi that you can query. We're using a SBMS100 and a local Blynk server... Check into that...
