I watched the favorite and the green book in the same day. and while I thought the favorite had genuinely great writing acting sets and directing(minus the weird fisheye lens that totally broke my immersion) I just enjoyed the green book more. I thought it oozed the 60s era that they were going for and the two leads were absolutely amazing(I thought the majority of the cast was perfect for their roles) and while it was predictable I think I loved it for the exact reason that Adam mentioned about "people who enjoy feel good movies". like Adam said, movies are escapism and it was the most enjoyable and heartwarming film I watched all year, and having seen all the best picture nominees this year I think it totally deserved the win.

A late response to an old comment, but... I have no idea. In order to win Best Picture, you have to win either Best Director or one of the two Screenplay Oscars. So that begs the question, why the heck were Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther specifically nominated for Best Picture when neither of them were nominated in those other categories? I like Black Panther, but why was it nominated for Best Picture in this case? First Reformed got an Original Screenplay nom, they definitely could have nominated that instead. Plus Cold War, since it got a Best Director nom. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Can You Ever Forgive Me were all nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay as well, so I'm confused as to why none of those were nominated either (although I would have to disagree with Can You Ever Forgive Me getting nominated for Best Picture). You could have made room for at least two of these, maybe even three of them, instead of nominating Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther. Vice and Green Book would still be nominated though, sadly, since both got undeserved Best Screenplay noms, and Vice got an undeserved Director nom too. That being said, Hereditary wasn't nominated for anything, so obviously it wasn't gonna be nominated for Best Picture. Toni Collette definitely should have been nominated for Best Actress though, that snub was a travesty. Though I'm not surprised, the Academy hates horror movies.

What I love is how media praises it so much, despite it being painfully mediocre, just because it has black people in it. They call Killmonger the best MCU villain, when his plan is to create a sort of commie society though distributing super advanced guns only to black people so they can sort of enslave the whites. Also the fact that the movie won an award and an oscar nomination for BEAT VISUAL EFFECTS is downright insulting. The vfx are consistently mediocre and the final battle legit looks like a cutscene from a ps2 game. The plot is predictable even by marvel standards and the acting which has been praised so much is just ok. Honestly it doenst even make my top 10 mcu movies list

The part of creating a Communist society through armed struggle isn't bad in and on in itself, and it's a good thing. In fact, that's the point of the film, to present African anti-colonialism which was always dominated by socialists especially of the Communist kind, as anti-White genocide by Blacks, when this is a hilariously stupid caricature that only justifies colonialism and imperialsim in Africa (and the rest of the world). The movie agrees with you in this regard, and that's part of the reason why it is so awful. Anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism is not the same as anti-White genocide, especially when the dominant African parties at least during the Cold War prior to the neoliberal reaction were predominantly Marxist, following a man who was German.

I'm glad other people are thinking this. How many of these formulaic kid's movies are they gonna make? Gotta love the MCU though. Thor, who couldn't act thirsty if he was in the desert for a week. A girl with a 9mm and a dude with a bow and arrow basically hold their own with a Hyper-Advanced Cyborg, a God (albeit one who can't act), a giant, and a super-soldier. That lame "adjustment period" in every film when the hero is clumsy with his or her powers to (supposedly) humorous effect. Uh oh, Dr. Strange's "hand magic" flickers like a light with a bad filament! ZING! Ironman doesn't calibrate his weapons and goes flying back and hits his head! ZING! Thor doesn't understand that breaking coffee cups is bad! ZING! etc. And Wakanda? The most technologically advanced society on Earth...still has ritual scarification, an absolute monarchy, ascension by combat, and bodyguards with spears. Gee, what a lovely society. What was Killmonger's line? Something like "Bury me in the Sea with my ancestors that jumped from ships because they knew death was better than slavery." Whatever the exact line was, I'm thinking "Wait, if they jumped from the slave ships, then they cannot be your ancestors. Not to mention, being Wakandan, a land that was supposedly never colonized meaning that Wakandan slaves would be even more unlikely. Anyway, just a handful of the thousands of absurdities in the many MCU films. I understand the vitriol that the DCU films, but the internet jumps up the ass of anyone who doesn't dare laugh at Starlord's "Dance off, me and you." line.

jack watkins I understand opinions are opinions man but Killmongers plan wasn’t to enslave people, it was to send vibration weapons to oppressed people so they can rise up and kill those in power. I personally don’t think the backstory was rushed but that’s your opinion. But he does make a great point that affects T’Challa morally which is that Wakanda had ability to help people during war or slave trades and they did nothing. As for the MCU thing, they show how his dad died, they explain Klaues back story, and I guess the unrelating MCU references can be difficult to understand without any background knowledge but they’re so brief

Having only recently seen both movies, Black Panther was definitely better. Infinity War was too much of a sequel to be judged on its own. Like, if you didn't watch all the MCU movies on the past year, good luck trying to understand every reference they make. At this point it's like watching four episodes of Game of Thrones or Walking Dead a year. Black Panther was a standalone movie with better music and was more focused.

The Dark Knight was 10 years ago, when no one expected superhero films to be taken seriously (Except for Raimi's Spider-Man but that trilogy fucked up in the end), it was thanks to Nolan that people started seeing superhero films with higher standards, and last year's Logan helped getting superhero films more consideration in award ceremonies. Even do it was a mistake, Black Panther owes it's nominations to both films.

Green Book is a fine film, but its nothing unique and it's just a film about two different men spend the conversation in road trip while talking about racism is very prejudice and it's more akin of ”Driving Miss Daisy.” It's more influence like ”Driving Miss Daisy” with a color person has to drive the car and the other one is very different and being too distinct from what they're colliding or evolving. It's been done so many times and who's going to remember about a stereotypical Italian driver who eats tons of pizza in a carbon pizza boxes and they misunderstood every single scene that we know that this dude did not obeys or what they're facing so many problems. Yay, I get the true story of they're telling, but it's nothing that too deep and it needs to have a better original. Roma is a perfect film that blends the society living in a 70’s Mexico town along with a hardworking housekeeper of seeing things like a protest, having a pregnancy until things turn out to be worst, living with a struggling family along a with a depressed housewife, and everything looks brand new with a good cinematography, good characters, new story, and emotional scenes that I felt with a maid who sacrifices her entire life. Too much to ask? No? Thinking that should've won better? Yay! I don't consider this cookie cutter cliche film because of its tiring.

I thought "Sorry to Bother You" had kind of an uneven screenplay - the last half felt rushed, a couple plot lines were dropped (his girlfriend gets back together with him for no reason??), and the final reveal was super predictable imo, like the end of a mid-tier Twilight Zone episode That said, it's still 1000 times better and more interesting than Green Book, Vice, and Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd much rather see a ballsy, interesting, genuinely original film like Sorry to Bother You get nominated (even if it's flawed), than a biopic with the same story as 100s of other biopics.

Hate to be that guy, but as for why Museo and Mandy didn't get nominated for anything, I'll try to explain. Museo, if nominated for anything, would've been nominated for Foreign Language Film. But unfortunately, it's a film from Mexico, the same country that submitted Roma this year. They can't submit 2 foreign language films for that category, and the Academy only really look for films in English typically, with exceptions such as Roma and Cold War. But you're probably right that since it was a KZbin movie, it probably wasn't taken seriously for anything else. But people did say that about Netflix, and now they have one of the most nominated pictures this year with Roma. As for Mandy, it unfortunately wasn't qualified due to how it was released. The academy has a policy for eligible movies that it has to have at least 3 days in a theater with at least 3 showings per day. Unfortunately, Mandy only had 2 showings per day during it's 3-day theatrical release, thus making it ineligible. Hopefully I explained the reasons clearly, as reasonable or unreasonable as they may be.

I felt that Cuaron could made a lot more with the story and the character of Cleo (i also didint like Yalitza, i found her very dull), idk, in the technical aspect the movie is solid, but it fails to get me on the narrative of it

What annoys me the most is how they snubbed Suspirium for best original song, which was made as part of the main score of the film and actually plays during it, but instead they nominate the Black Panther song which only plays during the credits and was made to promote the film rather than for the film. This category becomes pointless when they nominate songs made for marketing and promotion which doesn't mean a shit in the actual movie, it's actually surprising that they didn't went as far as nominating Pitbull's Ocean to Ocean in this category seeing how little they seem to care about it.

I saw A Star is Born with my mom. She LOVED it. I kept checking my phone for the time, knowing that due to its runtime it should end at 5:45. 5:35 hit and the thing was nowhere near an end (not even really at the "falling action" part of the story). I ask myself, "how will it end on time, then?" I answered, "Oh, he dies, got it." Then he died. Yet somehow my mother, who saw this movie when it came out in the 70's, was shocked by its conclusion. Truly a masterpiece, 10/10.
