Animation isnt just a medium being ignored, its an objectively superior medium than live action. There isnt a single thing you could do in live action, that you couldnt do better with animation, it is that simple. No hate on any of the talented actors working on live action (or stage, for that matter) productions by the way, but anything you can act, you can animate, and animation will always allow for a more expressive, more creative portrayal of your story because it isnt bound by reality the way real actors are.

The Oscars talking shit about animation, saying how kids love it and adults suffer through it, has got to be the BIGGEST middle finger to the animation industry and community. Animation is a medium filled with powerful storytelling and artistically amazing visuals made through hard work. Many of our most beloved movies of all time are animated from How To Train Your Dragon to Into The Spider-Verse. Yes, kids can find these films enjoyable but so can adults too. Animation is for everyone and anyone and no one should miss out on it. #AnimationIsForEveryone

Exactly! I'm working on a book at the moment about a girl who's missing a few fingers (my own disability) and I have already decided that if it becomes a movie, I want it to be animated. My hand is very unique and I don't want anyone using green screens and 'magic' to hide an actor's hand from the final CGI product. Animation is easier and you can make everything yourself. You don't have to rely on finding actors -- disabled or not -- who don't have the same disability. Sorry if it sounds like I'm on my high horse rn, I just don't want to see disabilities butchered by live-action. Also there are hardly any movies or stories -- animated or otherwise -- that involve disabled characters as a main. (Hiccup counts, Nemo and Dory count, Elina from Fairytopia does not because she gets WINGS at the end, I don't count Toph and Amaya either because they're supporting characters (even though they're amazing (don't @ me)) I am so glad Harry Potter and Encanto kept the glasses, and Fullmetal Alchemist is amazing for that. I haven't seen many other shows or movies with/about disabled characters. Animation is the perfect medium for disability to shine because you don't need to have actors pretend to be disabled when they're not, and some disabilities are too specific to find the right actor for.

Can we please talk about their lack of respect for Voice Actors as well. At least the animated movie award gets at least something, but voice actors aren't even given a best vocal performance award. Which absolutely disgusts me and it shows just how little they care about vocal performance. Hell, video game awards respect voice actors performances and actually care about them, even more than the Oscars and some of the anime community (yes I said it, dub actors are so underrated and need respect just as much as Japanese VAs).

Even as someone who usually prefers sub over dub when it comes to anime (because it’s the original, it helps me learn Japanese, and I prefer reading to hearing), I absolutely DEPISE it when people hate on the entirety of voice actors on anime dubs (and by extension, every VA in the English voice acting industry) no matter how good or bad of a person they really are, to the point of sending them death threats. Like, they’re just reading from a script? That’s all voice actors do, if you hate English dubs then don’t attack the voice actors involved, they do nothing but speak, grunt, and talk for their jobs, and they need to get paid, too. Putting anime out of the discussion, yes, as someone who wants to be a VA, it’s really disrespectful how the Oscars don’t have a voice acting award! While I hate the Game Awards too, at least they have some respect and honor for VAs. That is one of the few things that put them slightly above the Oscars for me, although they are bad too.

It's a huge shame that Disney as a corporation is so despicable that it leaves a smudge on a lot of their best recent movies, Encanto being a prime example. The creators of many of Disney's movies genuinely put a lot of care and effort into what they create, but still have to face being chained to their corporation, and victories that they deserve feel bittersweet at best because we know the corporate executives j**k off to those wins at the same time and don't truly care about the effort put into it. And with the Academy shamelessly shitting on animation the way they do and Disney not saying anything about it, it's clear that they just mooch off the money and fame of it all while the creators suffer the ridicule and poor treatment. At least we can all agree it's better that Encanto won rather than Raya and the Last Dragon. Like, can you freaking IMAGINE how that would've gone down? (P.S. Even though it didn't win, can we appreciate Sebastian Yatra's live performance of Dos Oruguitas? The way he performed through his visible nerves is the mark of someone who really cares about what they do. Also, that butterfly suit is *chef's kiss*.)

right? i recently had a friendly debate with one of my friends about why i think a lot of what disney puts out IS worthwhile. specifically the animation. at the end of the day, those movies are crafted by artists and it is a beautiful product of team work, talent, long hours, hard work. i know frozen is almost universally hated now bc of the mass marketing and people didn't love frozen 2, but if you watch the making of frozen 2 documentary on disney+ it is really cool to see the individual people and their families behind such a massive production. these are just individual artistic talented people and what they make is beautiful.

It teaches them amazing and age-appropriate life lessons such as why humans can't be trusted with the power of God, the unimaginable suffering of war and how it impacts even the most innocent members of society, why violence is acceptable if used for liberation, and understanding if consciousness is what makes us human. Ok, now name one mature animated movie made by an American company that didn't flop financially. America just doesn't have a big adult animated audience, so they aren't wrong to go onto an American awards show and say animated movies are for kids. This may be different in Japan, but in America animated movies are 100% for kids. It's a cultural thing. Even most of the mature animated tv in the US is meant to parody family entertainment, which is why so much of it is comedic family sitcom with of course it's edgy twists.

Just want to point out that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, an R-rated anime film, became the highest grossing film in 2020, beating the Christopher Nolan blockbuster Tenet. This makes it the first foreign animation to beat Hollywood at the box office, without massive marketing or big name celebrities attached to it, and it wasn’t even out in America until 2021. Granted, this happened during the height of the pandemic, but this just shows that you don’t need an award to get recognition and that the Academy is completely out of touch thinking that animation is for kids.

I still think The Mitchells vs The Machines deserved the Oscar for Best Animated Feature over Encanto. Now I don't think Encanto is bad, it's a good movie, but TMVTM has a lot more passion put in it, both style and story wise. It came from a group of people who love animation and tried to push the medium, and creating a unique, fun experience with a very heartfelt story that is based on real life experiences. I feel like the Oscars don't understand that it's not about popularity, or that it caters to a one, specific audience. Animation specifically, is a medium that made for everyone period. Whether it was hand drawn, 3d drawn, filmed on print or filmed digitally. How did it make you feel? Does it leave you with anything? Does it inspire you? Does you remind you of good memories? Bad? Thats the beauty of any film making and refusing to acknowledge that just based on how its made does not lend any credit to their opinions. I do love seeing second hand the sharing of all those acceptance speeches that matter, and those should be the focus anyways to be honest. I do wonder if theyre trying to appeal to a hip audience while not really knowing whats appealing instead of focusing on what is important. Yknow. Films.

The Oscars are nothing but a slap in the face to truly deserving film makers and art...and the irony that they banned an actor who played an Oscar from The Oscars. I'm glad the Best Animated Feature presentation got the uproar response that it did. Animation isn't just for kids. Walt Disney created Disneyland for the young and the young at heart...well, the same can be said about animation. I mean, look at Disney's Black Cauldron and Hunchback of Notre Dame, just take a good look at those two movies and tell me that movie is "just for kids". Same for DreamWorks' The Prince of Egypt...is that a kids movie? Yeah, that's what I thought..it's for everyone! It's something both kids and adults can understand what's happening and the moral. They're the same people who wouldn't want to watch a Nicktoon like Avatar the Last Airbender because to them at first glance, it's a "kids show" despite it bringing up not so kid-friendly topics. Never judge a book by its cover. There is nothing wrong with an adult watching an animated show or movie and getting deep into thought as to what it portrays

Honestly, what determines "being made for kids" is a bit in flux right now. For so long, we've patronized our kids by assuming they're stupid and deciding that shows or movies that talk about serious subjects are "not for kids." Look, I'm all for saying that animation is a medium not just relegated to kids entertainment, but we also need to be careful about saying certain films are or are not for kids. Avatar and Prince of Egypt tackle serious subjects, but they do so in a way that is respectful of how kids think and process information. It opens the door to more serious conversations we should be having with our kids and does so in a visual medium to help begin understanding what these ideas mean. However, most parents don't want to have conversations with their kids at all, so, here we are. Animation is a medium we should be recognizing more for kids and adults. But more importantly, we need to see kids as capable of learning so much so that we can continue using media to make our messages to kids and adults more significant.

Yeah, Disney should not try to bury animation now! 5 years in the future, I am going to start a big push for 20th Century Animation to make animated films for adults (besides the movies they already have for The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers) because I have already concocted a few good ideas for such a unique market following the success of Sausage Party.

I strongly dislike most things about the Oscars, but I too watch because it's really awesome to see your favorites win. But also it's a fun tradition for my mom and I. We always watch it together every year and that's honestly why I still have a soft spot for the Oscars.

The hatred I feel for the Oscars and Hollywood as a whole really just keeps growing. All the awards should be equal and the fact that they view some as lesser shows how disconnected Hollywood is not just from reality, but from the very people who make movies possible.

Fun fact: The We Don’t Talk About Bruno Oscar performance was so bad and horrendous, that even Dolores’s voice actress Adassa agreed. She retweeted tweets on Twitter about how bad the performance was the day after the Oscars. That’s how you know they truly fucked up the song when one of the goddamn performers agrees.

I really hate how the girls were calling animated films 🙄🙄''something that kids watch over and over and over'' 🙄🙄and Flee came up after that. Do these women even think THAT is a kids film, ''WRONG''. Do these women think Family Guy and The Simpsons are kids shows, Think again ladies, Think again.

My film major boyfriend can't stand the Oscars, and the more I learn about them the more I undoubtedly agree with him

8:23 I agree with this but it was painful watching James Horner wait that long to get recognized for his scores, and in the end they gave it to him for Titanic, which is perfectly fine in it's own right, but compared to stuff like Glory, Braveheart, Willow, or either of his Star Trek movies, is almost a travesty. At least Michael Giacchino has an Oscar buried somewhere along all the Annie's he's won over the years, and it came in his first decade in movies.
