Those dimensions matter when parking in a tight underground car park. It's still possible in a 5 series, but a bit harder :)

As an owner of E28 M5, E39 M5, E46 M3, and have had in the past E34 M5, E61 M5, E36 M3, etc in the past, and currently daily an F11 530d so I’m not just coming from a weekend car but also a daily aspect, let me settle this as the lines are starting to blur. The new 3 series is bigger than my E39 5 series!! How did we come to this?!?!!! If BMW made a M540 d/i like they do the M340 d/i. Got rid of the 2 screens [feels like I’m at my office staring at two screens] and went back to analogue dials, maybe with a digital map in between like Porsche do it on their 911 then that would solve the cockpit problem of the 5. And the 3. The 3 has more features in the cockpit and performance in the engine than the 5 in terms of comparing the best diesel derivatives as per that’s what I am looking at. Again. How the hell did this happen?! It always been the other way round. The M340d gives better performance and mpg than the 530d-535d. So the 5 should have the same if not more features as per both 6 cylinder engines. So if the 5 had that and more then that’s a good start. And got rid of the facelift 5 rear light. On this video they show the pre facelift which I like. Either go back to pre facelift. Or make the facelift more elegant. That fat bar light looks horrible. And whilst we talking about lights. What the hell is going on with the front lights. Is it too much to ask to go back to angels? Instead of the half hexagon-whatever they are?! Where do the designers come from?!?!! If all the above was addressed you would have the perfect car, thus the 5 would be better than the 3 in terms of long term driving, understated looks, being your daily, which is how it has historically been at BMW. Problem is we live in a world where everything is upside down. E.g. People are more concerned about pronouns in the workplace than they are about doing their job thus creating engineering marvels. In a sea of rainbow looking cars the G80 and G30 are still good looking cars. Granted they have their pros and cons. My daily has always been a 5. In diesel. Ideally touring. But for the first time I am looking at buying the 3, M340d touring as per it’s not that far off in dimensions from my current F11. And I feel after 2035 in the UK they not going to sell diesels any more, so if your really against the electric this would be the time to buy. But damn BMW u need to take a page out of Porsche’s book and stay true to your history.

At last BMW has realised that they have to offer a new look to their cars....the new car looks much more fresh n appealing... compared to the old boring personality of the car.... similarly BMW has to upgrade n give complete fresh look the old fashioned 5series....if they really want to win over competition.....n that too without copying any compititative vehicles...i can give suggestions on the design if required...

The 5 series surely is more comfortable and luxurious, plus it offers more high end options like a really good audio system. Since the 3 is already so good now (and got bigger but also more expensive), I agree there's not much need to get the 5 series. But it's also not that much more expensive, put 3 big extras in the 3 series and you got the 5 series price.

The new 3 series is nearly the same size as the 5, hardly any difference, 200mm more in length, 50mm more in height, 40mm in width. It should be smaller. The back of the new 3 looks terrible, the front ok
