"I've always found the front wheel to be well planted". What a brilliantly way to describe it. It does sound odd, but ride one and you'll know EXACTLY what that means.

I liked your video so much that next week I’m going from N. Ireland to Cornwall, to Ocean Falmouth BMW Motorrad no less, to pick up a 2019 R 1250 RT LE. I then have to ride 553 miles to Scotland to catch the ferry home. It’s a good job it’s a luxury tourer!

I’ve owned several BMW motorcycles through the years. My first was a 1979 R65 that I purchased in 1984. I took a 20 year hiatus from riding, than purchased a 2003 1150 R. Drove that for several years then purchased a new 2007 1200R. Over the last decade I’ve had a 2009 and a 2010 rt. The real noticeable change in performance and handling came when I purchased a new 2015 RT. I rode the 2015 for about 4 years, putting approximately 30k trouble free miles on it. I took delivery in November 2018 of a new 1250Rt. I honestly did not think there wasn’t much to be improved upon,and questioned my sanity for replacing the 2015 with a newer model. However the new model is bit more responsive,the transmission seems to operate smoother than my previous bike. Obviously I’m a fan of the German engineering! This is the Bentley of motorcycles! Priced like one too.

The RT has evolved massively over the years. I had a 1981 RT and used it daily but boy was it a different beast! You got used to it tank slapping and having to fettle the carbs every few weeks and learned to love the thing for its simplicity. Downsides were poor handling by today's standards and it's propensity for eating wheelbearings, those self cracking cast alloys and the ptfe front metzler lazer tyres! I love the seating position and screen on the new RT but ended up with 2016 gsa instead and don't regret it. Mra screen and a few other bolt ons and it just does everything needed. Keep the great vids lads!

I’m biased on the RT and dang proud of it. It’s the best handling bike I’ve ever ridden and I LOVE IT. The GSA was my only other consideration but the comfort and convenience features won me over to the RT and besides, many police department motor units use this bike for law enforcement. That says a lot. Thanks for the honest and brilliant review!

Very honest review indeed. I ride a 2019 R1250RT and mo other bike I’ve test ridden for fun over the last 2 years holds a candle to it.....except yesterday, when I test rode a K1600B. Both bikes are excellent, but of course RT is more nimble. However, if I was taking a long distance trip with more than 4 hours per day in the saddle, I would prefer the K1600b. PL

The size and the shape of the panniers? Any bigger you can't filter, it's a challenge now. I have a GSA I opted for soft collapsible panniers that are perfect for filtering in traffic and carrying just what I need on a fire road or trail. I think the RT is not a very attractive bike at all. Yet there are people who enjoy driving anything that seems functional over style & form.

I liked the review even though there were definite biased comments in it about another bike not being reviewed. 😉 Being a Yankee, I find that my cousins across the pond do much better reviews than my brothers do over here. I'm looking to purchase one of these RTs used, so I'm watching old reviews on them. Are there any long term issues that people have found with these?

Russell Locke I’m is the same boat, struggling between the GS and the RT. I’m a short rider so the GS is a bit intimidating for me on tip toes. My buddies are riding. Ducati Multistradas and are saying to go for the GS they can do it all. I’m concerned most about a comfortable ride on those long 4K mile trips on the GS. Having never owned a GS it concerns me. Your take ?
@russelllocke7180
@russelllocke7180 5 жыл бұрын
Joaquin long rides on the GS are fine. It is a comfortable bike. I regularly think about that RT , but then in my real world riding on some pretty dodgy Australian road surfaces, I’m glad I’m on the GS. It handles very well & if I choose to do some more adventure riding then it’s simply a change of tyres. I’m 6’4” so I kind of fit well on the beast, however when two up & fully loaded I am quite aware that it is even higher off the ground when you set the controls for two up. You just need to adjust & plan ahead with where & how you stop. I don’t have the low seat and leave my seat in the high position for maximum room for my long legs. I love it and every time I ride it I hop off with a huge smile on my face.
@JoaquinChea

Russell Locke Thanks for your input. I love the creature comforts of the RT, but I’m probably going to go with the GS because it’s overall a more versatile machine that can run tarmac and dirt roads.

Great video ! If only I could afford to buy one. Currently rise an 08 GS and love it. That said it literally took me years to like a Boxer engine having ridden 4 cylinders. Had a mad moment last year and sold a GS to buy a Crosstourer and within 2 months realised my mistake and traded it in for an older GS. Missed the character & torque of a Boxer engine plus the divine cornering ability of a GS. Never gonna make that mistake again. Now where's that Lottery ticket I brought last Saturday !

Traded my 1200 GSA for the 1200 RT back last July, a lovely bike to ride, great in bad weather. hoping to put some serious miles on it this year. If I am honest, @ 6' 2" tall I find my legs are bent just a little bit too much for real comfort, especially after riding Adventure bikes, but it won't spoil my riding fun. Great vid guys, thanks for that. I've got a '16 RT and love it, so I'm not sure about upgrading while that's still in its prime. Not quite enough to make me rush out and buy the 1250. When the time comes to change though... You are dead right about the horn - I fitted a Stiebel from Nippy Normans which grabs peoples attention and makes me feel a bit more secure (apart from when the duff relay stuck it on). There's only one thing that REALLY winds me up on mine; the central locking does not include the sat nav. A right wind up when you stop briefly to fill up or grab a coffee and have to take the Nav with you. Not sure if they have sorted this on the new one. It will be interesting to see what comes when the RT is due for a revamp.
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 5 жыл бұрын
with you on that one Kev... i cannot understand why the Sat Nav is not lockable! they cost enough to secure and its a pain to remove it every single time.. fingers crossed they do something about it but im not holding much hope :)

Big fan of RTs. I've owned 4 different generations of them. Last one was the 2015 model. I can't cough up the dough for one right now. I just bought a 2012 K1600GT which I found surprisingly similar to sit on, way it feels balanced within itself. Anyway, bad audio aside, prejudice, spot on ;).

Great review, and thank you. I've always felt the RT is the unsung hero in BMW's range, being overshadowed in sales by the Charlie Boorman, Ewan McGregor influenced GS/GSA. I was very surprised to find at a BMW sponsored event re the release of the previous GSA, how many quote "old men" were riding the GS, but had absolutely no intention whatsoever of ever taking them off road - mainly because of the increased danger of having a fall. Which is a very real and relevant concern - as you get older it is much harder to recover from injury, and the chance of a fall during off road riding is much higher than on-road. But clearly the marketing image of the freedom to ride wherever and whenever with the GS/GSA, drives sales, even if the reality of usage is somewhat different. My only issue with the RT is that in Australia, with summer temperatures quite commonly in the 40's whether one would be comfortable enough with the decreased airflow with the RT screen v's a GS/GSA. Having said that, I've read enough research on the subject to understand that once you go over 33ºC, the effect of the very hot ambient airblast is to actually increase your body temperature through convection heating, rather than evaporative cooling, so in some ways the extra wind protection of the RT is actually a plus, even in extremely hot conditions. Overall I would say, that unless you want to do serious off roading, and perhaps only tackle a bit of gravel or unmade road either to a campsite, or perhaps the foreground of a hotel, the RT is possibly the better choice where one is touring predominately on road, over a GS/GSA. Certainly as a potentially returning, 'older' rider, the extra creature comforts of the RT greatly appeal over the more spartan, off road appeal of the GS. Besides, the local constabulary, many in their 20's ride them, and have no issue stopping hoons on their crotch rocket 1,000 CC in line four sports bikes; so much for quote "old mens bikes" then..lol... Cheers and thanks again for a great review and channel - one of the best! :-)

What I found on the RT is that I would rather be on a GS from 80 (26.5 C) to 95 (35 C) and the RT when its hotter than that. Not having that hot airblast you are more comfortable and cooler on a long ride on the RT

Way behind other MFG's for technology. RT is a great motorcycle I have a 2016 with 170k miles very dependable!! They need to step up and get with the times!!

Just re-visiting this excellent video review. A quick question if I may. Would you be able to ride this bike along unmade/unpaved roads? By this I mean the usual loose gravel over dirt. Some people consider that off road riding, but being pedantic, an unmade/unsealed road is still a road; off road is traversing terra firma where no road exists, - so grass, muddy trails, rocky ground etc. From that POV and with a 17" front wheel v's the 19" of a GS/GSA, I wonder how much worse, if at all, an RT would be compared to a GS/GSA at travelling down relatively mild, reasonably well maintained unmade/unpaved gravel roads. Cheers and thanks John

@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 5 жыл бұрын
thanks for the kind words Joaquin. Its always a tough decision between the GS and RT, although they will both do you proud. The RT will provide more wind protection and you will be sitting more on the bike. The panniers are shaped so although great, they will lose some space for packing, purely for their shape, whereas the GS boxes are square and easier to pack. Having said that the RT top box is massive! The RT has the option of a radio which the GS doesnt. On the GS you will be sitting more in the bike, but both have the same engine and much the same characteristics, and the GS would be more at home on offroad too, if you were to do any. That said they will both do the same thing and you will love them both, it may come down the the heated seat on the RT and the creature comforts such as adjustable screen, radio and styling.... but both will be great. I know not much of a biased comment here from us, but they are both just incredible machines...enjoy your choice though :)

RiderCamTV thanks for your input of the RT/GS choice dilemma , I’ll have to give it some serious consideration, my riding buddies have the luxury of having multiple bikes touring and adventure to choose to ride. I can only afford one bike and so since the GS is the more versatile machine from that perspective I may need to go with it.

FJR is lovely to drive, but you wanna go touring or pack on a pillion, it just doesn’t do as well with the weight... The RT has the greater mac weight allowance, making it far better both for touring (if you’re packing the world) or for taking your partner on the back.

Great informative video - had a 2012 RT and loved it but since had 2 x R1200 GSA's and I am toying with the idea of the 1250 RT - I am of the same opinion as you guys though I like the top loading rugged luggage on the GSA and my wife finds the GSA nice and comfortable whereas she felt a little cramped on the RT. Topbox price is a killer on the RT too.

As always gents a great video and on your old review stomping ground Penzance Point, and of course the Ice Cream van is still there. As an owner of a second hand 2014 RT i was hoping they would upgrade a lot more than they did like back light the switch gear and get rid of the ariel and give to option of a TFT screen. So would i upgrade to the 1250 no. But may go for the 2018 version..i hear the prices are coming down due to the intro of the 1250. But i love my RT and now that we've come to an understanding over the last year and Ive bought her a few presents (Roadhawk bike cam/ louder horn & Aux lights) i really dont want to change...although.

Is there much of a difference in the low down torque and flexibility compared to the 1200LC? I find my current 12RT is a bit lacking when I just want to keep it in a higher gear and let it flow around bends rather than attack them. My previous 11RT could do this. Am hoping the 1250 is more flexible across the rev range
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 5 жыл бұрын
it seems a little more flexible but riding in the middle 3rd rev range will sort that issue out and you will find that not only you have the torque when you need it but also the engine breaking to slow you down without touching the brakes and destabilising the bike in a corner :) Ride safe

I think BMW hired some Honda engineers who worked on their 6 cilinder boxer for the Goldwing. Indeed, I had to look at my dashboard to see whether 1st gear was in. As far as the panniers concerns, they are designed to work perfectly with the (extra) inner bags, hence the wraps inside. I had those cases on my old 1200R, they are great. And let's face it, if you cannot take sufficient luggage on these bikes, it's time to add 2 more wheels. Or better..... leave your wife home. When are you testing the 1250 GSA?

I'm only 5' 6" tall and I have a 2003 RT, I feel that my bike is more suited to a taller rider as it is a bit high off the ground and sometimes feels like a wrestling match at low speed.. Do you think the newer models are more easier to handle for the vertically challenged .
@mrgari189

Currently own a 2003 RT and a 2014 RT. There is a big difference when stationary - the 14 RT is lower (feet flat on ground) compared to the 03 RT which is more tips of feet (but that seat is wider). Less of a difference once rolling ...
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 5 жыл бұрын
totally agree with Mrgari189. they are much lower than the GS and older RT's so you should be able to get both feet on the ground :)

I’m 5’4” and have a ‘15RT. The newer LC bikes are way easier to ride than the previous generation 1200s. I can ride it at walking pace without really thinking about it and it changes direction really well. Don’t have to fight it. The only complaint I could make about it is that the (low) seat is rock hard.

I wish someone would make an analysis of the true width of these bikes. Compare a narrower bike with rider on, where the knees stick out with an RT where the bike is obviously wider in appearance, but knees are covered. Narrow bike with rider on is almost the same width with an RT with rider on.

I have the 2010 RT and luv it, I am afraid to test ride the 1250. I would luv to see the difference btw the gear shifting as my 2010 clunks, which the mechanics say is normal for it.

the 1250 is soooo smooth its untrue.. a slight clunk going into 1st sometimes but most of the time it is so smooth you wouldnt know you had changed gear if it were not for the gear shift indicator on the dash.. amazing

Nice vid, I had an 1100 Honda Pan with similar mirrors, they are good and I agree with your observation description. I have a 16 plate K1600 now, I never tried the RT it would be interesting to see your comparison of the two. The K1600 is a heavy bike to manhandle but once running at walking speed or over the weight disappears. Keep up the reviews, it's good to get an honest description.

Great review, I test rode one last year and it did everything perfectly, and therein lies the problem. I felt it did it all too well and 'removed' the feeling that I was riding a bike! Felt more like driving a car in many ways. Can't recommend the RT enough as it is brilliant, and that's exactly why I will never buy one. Go Figure!! :-)

I have a ZZR1400 now but had a RT-P 1st gen last as I'm a blood biker too. The RT was easier to ride slowly than my CBR125 lol and I really miss it (started having a few reliabilty issues at 90k). Now I'm looking for RT features with ZZR torque and power, and the closest I can find is the K1600GT, which fully spec'ed is about 3k more than a fully spec'ed RT. When the time comes I'll test ride them both but at the moment my heart is set on the K1600 lol. I'd love to see you review the K1600 as you two don't seem so blown away by the toys as most of the reviews for it Interestingly most Blood bike groups now go for FJR1300s as Yamaha give them a very favourable package, but in the group I ride for until may when I turn 30 I'm stuck on lower CC bikes and currently ride an F800GT
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 5 жыл бұрын

@@RiderCamTV In Shropshire we started with ec-police RTs but when Yamaha came out with a blood bike specific model (rather than modified from a police model) a few years ago it's a no brainer. The more I'm riding the ZZR at the moment the more I'm missing the 1st gen RT. Want to get rid of my trainers and put on my comfy slippers again lol. I Think the K1600GT will be a really good compromise between the two. May get a 2nd hand one K16 at the start of 2020 just to fill in the gap before getting a brand new one. But the RTs are incredible bikes. BMW have a special formula for a sports-touring bike. I call them ST bikes as they can play with sports bikes all day but when the sports riders have pulled over for fuel we can keep going, These bikes are massively under-rated

I love your videos! I have a 2012 K1600GT, and in the past the difference in power was enough for me to not even consider an RT. My last bike was a K1300GT. With the new bike though, the performance difference is a lot less! And then there's the maintenance. I just did the spark plugs and radiator clean a few months ago, and just had to do the front wheel bearing and ball joints. The maintenance is just killing me. Maybe it's time to drop some cylinders, lose a few HP and just ride more! To see what I've been up to, and how NOT to repair your ball joints, please follow along! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKfNdKWcjNiJeac -jaysbigadventure
