Aaaaahhh yes Mr Flyer! This was the bike that changed everything for me. The S1000RR was in for service, & the salesman always reckoned I should buy the GS. He said "why don't you take a bike out while your waiting? Like the GS." I said no, I'm never going to buy a bike like that! (heh heh!) "So which one would you like? take your pick." I said the R 1200 R looks like a nice ride. I'm telling you, I've never had a smile on my face riding on a freeway before. I was gobsmacked at how much fun I had riding this bike. Yes I was wearing my sports bike blinkers on all the time back then, but this bike was a revelation to me! I just couldn't believe at how good it was to ride. It really changed everything about bikes for me. I cannot believe what it must be like now with a 1250 in it. And as the story goes, I got rid of the sports bike & own a naked bike & a GSA now!!!! Thank you R 1200 R. You're a beautiful thing. Cheers groover ;-)

I've got 22,000 miles on a 2016 R1200R. It doesn't belong in the same conversation as super nakeds. It is a naked sport touring bike. I've also got some time on a 2015 RS. The R, in my opinion, is much more fun than the RS. I'm really happy BMW gives us the boxer in a naked roadster. Not for everyone sure, but for me and my uses it is the perfect motorcycle.

Actually this 1250 has decent horsepower now, and more importantly MORE torque than any hooligan or super naked bike out there, so yes it can compete very well against super-nakeds. In fact, I often choose it over my super fun Super Duke R.

TMF, have been thinking about your question regarding why someone would choose this over a S1000R... Personally, and coming from the S100XR (similar to the S1000R) what attracts me about the R1250R is the comfort/feel, the engine, and the overall manners of the bike. Much as I love the mental/bonkers engine of the S1000 series (especially in the S1000RR), as a daily ride it can become fatiguing when not downright excilarating. I guess its the same reason that I ddint go for one of the KTM or Aprilia super nakeds: the R1250R has more than enough power but is a much easier bike to get on with day to day, and much more versatile as you point out in your review. All lovely bikes just depends what you want and I think with the latest upgrade to the R1250R BMW have produced a winner.

I haven't ridden either yet but am thinking about them...the R1250r has more torque than the s1000r, if I'm not mistaken. So that could mean more practical power. The 1250 has closed the gap a bit compared with the 1200. So I guess it's torque vs high end power. The only thing holding me back really is the lack of a proper twin sound.

Thanks for the review TMF. I bought the previous model R1200R a couple of years ago, and I've loved every day on it since. It's more of an all-rounder to me than the alternatives you mentioned, and the comfort and riding position were a big factor. That new Shift-Cam looks enticing though. Seems much smoother than the implementation on my bike. Might have to pop into the dealer and take one for a ride ...

I recently had a 790 KTM and it was terrific. Interestingly the low fuel tanks have the same weight distribution advantage as my 2000 R1100R. The thing is it doesn’t like to cruise slowly along the beach road. It runs 1000 rpms higher than the BMW and roasts your butt riding slow. I turned the KTM back in and gained a renewed appreciation of why BMW boxers are the bikes for this old guy. It cruises slowly at 2000 rpm just fine and has decent pickup at 5000 rpm. I can accelerate on even the steepest hills with the torque. My mechanic offered to let me ride his 1250 but I’m afraid of weak sales resistance to upgrading to the modern boxer.

Hey TMF, nice review, can’t wait to test ride the new r1250r, I’ve got a 2015 r1200r, and I love it. The 1250 should be better than the 1200, because the liquid cooled 1200 is far superior to the air cooled 1150, technology tends to do that. I think calling these bikes a super naked is a bit misleading and that’s not what they are, they’re a roadster, a do all bike that does it very well, commute, tour, twisties, 2-up and limited dirt roads. All bikes are a compromise if you want them to do multiple roles, the r1200r just does everything better than most. Who are they for? Well since most GS’s never see a dirt road, and these bikes can do everything a GS can do (sometimes better IMHO) except off road, that’s the market, people like me that love the boxer engine, shaft-drive and comfort that don’t like wearing adventure gear to the cafe😎

I had the oil cooled R1200R and would agree it’s more of a roadster. It is a great all around bike. I also have a R1200GSA and it’s not as sporty as the R1200R. But with two bikes with the same engine, I switched my R1200R for a true super naked, the S1000R. If you have only one bike and don’t plan on doing any adventure riding, the R1200R series is a nice option.

Hi Andy, you wondered who this bike might be for, if BMW also have the S1000R in the range. Well it was a toss-up between this and the S1000R back in 2019 and I chose the S1000R. It was mainly about the lower all up weight of the 1000 and the higher power output! After about 16 months, I've found that the S1000R gets a bit flighty when you are pushing on with high speed weaves and many owners including myself have not been able to dial that out of the bike. The 1250R felt unflappable when I test rode it and I miss that sense of security! Also, the midrange is a bit soft on the S1000 (unsurprisingly perhaps) and the 1250 feels a good bit stronger where you want it on the road. Then you have shaft drive, the TFT screen goodness and the boxer engine, which for me sounds more appealing! The 1250R has more character about it, so now I'm thinking about going the other way 😊

Totally agree, my 2015 R Sport has done over 25k touring all over Europe. Not as good wind protection as a GS but 70-80 MPH cruising is fine. The GS also rides rough roads slightly better due to the telelever front end but the R is far more manageable on a day to day basis than a GS, and yes the R is tuned differently with more low-mid range torque than the RT/GS/GSA. For many it's a better option than a GS/GSA but I guess it hasn't the macho "I'm off to the Himalayas" look, but it does have the benefit of not being a GS/GSA; park at the top of a pass in the Alps and you'll actually find your R amongst a sea of GS/GSAs.

I could feel my right wrist twisting and the hair on the back of my neck rising in excitement, the crisp morning air and the gourmet cuisine from the hotel in my nostrils. Nice review. Never really liked the styling of this bike, but with this new motor I might not give a damn about the looks with a ridiculous looking grin on my face. Having said that, the HP doesn’t look half bad. How would you rate those Michelins? Personally, I found all Michelin tires to be really good, but noisy whether on a car or bike. Went back to the Tourance Next tires on my GS and the reduction in noise from the Anakee 3s is massive. Useful tip, if you ever get the opportunity to ride a factory option lowered GS, do. I was pleasantly surprised despite having no issue reaching the ground on the standard. You still get the great leg room but with a lowered center of gravity it handles as if on rails in the twisties and one dirt roads. Quite frankly, anyone with no intention of taking their GS on technical off road terrain should definitely at least test one before ordering their new bike.

TMF, It feels great in the R1250GS Rallye as well, not typically like a traditional Boxer and I've been mightily impressed since I've had mine, and I'm generally a stalwart Japanese motorcycle fan, but I've never been a "snob" about whatever a good motorcycle is, in the manufacturer stakes....If it's good it's good, that's it!

@TMF - you can of course be forgiven for reviewing with your heart and not your head, but I've always wondered at your dislike of previous R's, a 1200LC of which I own. Especially you being a GS owner. Yet, you seem to get it with this review of the newer 1250. Why own one? You say it yourself - city, commute, tour, rip it on the weekend - comfortable, stellar handling....a true do-it-all bike. Why not the S1000R? Obviously because its a more relaxed ride with 95% of the performance, doesn't need to be revved to the moon to go fast or buzz your brains out while doing so. Why not a KTM SD or Aprilia Tuono? Well, for the same reason you don't own a 1290 SD Adventure S -- it's not a BMW boxer with all the character and history and rideability and, and, and........and suddenly you realize it's sporting ability? - What, 143n/m is finally enough for real world riding, where the 125n/m of the 'old' model wasn't? You know that the new superduke GT (THE BEAST) is specc'ed the same, right? I haven't yet ridden the new 1250 and am afraid to in some ways -- I'm sure it's better, faster, smoother -- and even though I dislike the new colors, I'd likely go for the fresh one. And I need to spend on another new motorbike like a hole in the head. But your excitement over this one as opposed to the last is an incitement I might not be able to ignore.............help! Your last gripe that is, I suppose, completely subjective is you're put off by the looks..... And you on a GS? Sorry, that's a use of your heart that perhaps you should not be forgiven for..........HA!

My thoughts exactly, In the R1200r review it was suggested that that bike was suitable for a beginner ( 125hp bike for a beginner ?? ) but suddenly the 1250 with 9 horsepower more is a monster. Hmmm.

Another great review sir!! BMW have defiantly come on in leaps and bounds in the last 10 -15 years, I wouldn't of dreamed of having one, as I thought they were for boring old gits, or is it that I am getting old now !, anyhow, now if you have15+ grand to spend it would be difficult to choose which one, I had a GS for 2 years which was a fantastic machine, done everything very well, just a bit bulky in town, I like this bike but still prefer my 9RT ✌🏍

Very nice looking bit of kit. Big Beemer fan here but what on earth is that horrific carbuncle in front of the tft screen. Man alive, they left the design of that until 5pm on a Friday didn't they!

Finally tested one today! What a bike, it's a rocket powered freight train! I only wanted to overtake a couple of cars while checking out the pull from low revs and it went from 85 to 160 kph without flinching. I'm deeply, deeply impressed by this, but it's definitely too early for me. It strikes me as a tool for the well initiated: it does most things a bike can do brilliantly, almost an uncompromised compromise if there ever was such a thing. But you gotta know how and what to do and how to make it do it. And I don't (2 years experience overall). I'd either be wasting a 18 grand bike or, worse, binning it due to sheer inexperience and hubris. Maybe in 3-4 years if I ride as much as I can with every ride as a lesson. Meanwhile the F900R shall be an excellent and fun tool to get there...

Thing that I’m torn over about on the 900R is the weight, it isn’t too far from this one at 211kg. So why not get this one & not have to upgrade after a year.
@SpaceVulcan4 жыл бұрын
@@jenarddennis2737 I bought the 900R abut 6 weeks ago and am head over heels in love with the thing. Not sure if you'd be bored in a year (have to get there meself), but the weight is not an issue unless you have to back it up in loose ground (which would be a problem anyway). And I can't see myself getting bored of that howl/roar when you give it the beans!

I have a fully spec’d out 2016 R1200-RS, best bike I’ve ever owned in all my 20+ years of having “big bikes”... Just got back from Touring around Europe & the Alps for the last 9 days, clocked up 2.5k miles in total. Even rode it directly back from the far side of France on the last day, clocking up 582 miles with ease - it just eats up the miles in comfort, especially with having a big Touring screen fitted! I may consider the newer 1250 version sometime in the future. Although mine has had a bit of a tune-up & now puts out 140 bhp, & has a good extra dollop of useable torque throughout the rev-range also. So probably wouldn’t feel any discernible performance difference between mine & the new 1250 shift-cam engine. Also, really not sold on this years new colours either in that model!..🤔

TFT updates take up to 8 hours and has to be done at the BMW shop. Glad I have my big clocks and a simple LCD computer with simple buttons to change functions without scrolling through a screen. I'm sure this is bike is fun bike regardless. My Ford F-150 does over the air updates in my driveway on its screen, maybe BMW will have that tech someday.

The reason why I would buy it is I’m a short guy and I found the gs to heavy… so as I see it your getting the engine power and build quality. But easier to manage.

In answer to your question about why someone would have this instead of the s1000r, I think one reason would be the shaft drive as opposed to having to faff around with a chain. Also, the s1000r is less comfortable for an oldie like me, the foot pegs are much higher (I test rode one yesterday!) Having said that, I'd have the s1000r because of the insane engine and there are great deals available at the moment probably because they are about to update it with LCD screen etc.

Nice review! 105.47 ft-lb torque, I can't relate to newton meters, I wish they would leave these standards alone. I guess it looks better as a higher number, It's like Kilobytes vs kilobits, I got used to kilobytes now I have to do the X8 math in my head just so I can relate. Date, time and temperature would be a nice addition to your videos.
