Not according to this review it certainly isn't. Its also not really an SUV, but a crossover. As such, it has to go against the HRV, Renegade, Trax, Soul, CX3, and the like, with the CX3 probably being the most fun to drive. I have a feeling that most Americans would probably prefer the softer suspension, more interior room, and boxier styling of the Jeep Renegade version. For those that like the more urban styling, I think the Buick Encore is likely going to be the more attractive and reliable option.

@@MegaAbdo15 Not hardly. Its only the same basic chassis, but even that is modified with the Renegade being far more boxy. The Renegade and 500X also share powertrains, but with different programming for the AWD system. Otherwise, they share almost no interior components and no body panels or wheels or even suspension which is unique for the Renegade and not merely just the added height and softer spring rates. Its not like the Miata and Spider, where they are almost identical save for powertrain, this is the opposite where its really just the powertrain that's the same and virtually everything else is unique.

Hi Thomas, great review again. I am very pleased to tell you I bought the 500L CITY CROSS S DESIGN last week. I compared it in the showroom with the 500X, but apart from style it really was the interior space, the driver visibility (bigger windows, transparent A pillars, upright windows and seat) and the functionality / practicality of the 500L that convinced me of its value. I recommend having the highest design trim possible for your pocket, it really is about usability, comfort and style. The 500L has flipping back seats and the front seat goes completely down too. These cars are not for going fast, being sporty. The relaxed driving position just doesn't invite you to it. But still, the firm suspension, the 17inch tyres and the antiroll technique offers plenty grip. I am very relaxed and self assured when going through corners, despite the light steering. We are not racing pilots, we are dads and husbands transporting our dear families on vacation trips. The infotainment system is better integrated into the dashboard in the 500L than the 500X, yes responsiveness is a bit weak but then again I come from the generation that used to dial in the internet connection through the phone wire, it's really not an issue...as it's even less an issue that the hard plastic is everywhere in this car... you will be grateful when you have a 7 and 9 year old when picking them up from their scouts weekend. Just put an anti-static sponge in the glove box to wipe the stripes off now and then. Also I never ever start groping the dash all of the sudden, it's just not an issue in a true family car. At the back I can sit upright with plenty headroom and kneeroom left, being a 174cm tall. When my kids are 17, full grown, they will be able to sit comfortably too. Then the engine, it is commonly known for Fiat there engines are nor economical nor environmental friendly. I have the simple naturally aspirated 1.4 95hp engine, it consumes 7l per 100km. Drive it high rev all the time and that will be +10l per 100km for sure. It also has 159g co2/km exhaust, be careful, that is the by the old calculation method NEDC (lab test) . The new calculation called WLTP(real environment test) , has a significant increased score of 189g!!! That means starting from the year 2020, all cars will be taxed by this rating and you will pay dearly for the registration of your car if it has a high score. In my case, NEDC registration tax will be over €1000 (Belgium) but from next year, WLTP turns that into €2.300!!!!! Annual tax will be a very pleasant €230, as it's a benzine engine, the diesels are being punished harder then. Fortunately for me, I bought mine this year. Really something Autogefuhl and the whole motoring journalism sector should start informing about. The reason I chose this engine is simple, it was the only one available in this trim. One could have the diesel in the CROSS, but that is a diesel (in Belgium you are a monster considered by the green governs if you buy a diesel) and a full €3.000 more expensive. You can do what you want, but you can be sure of it the authorities will use the environment as a huge taxing machine from now on, and they are not really concerned about the planet but more about the wallet. Let me tell you sth, my budget was €15.000, I bought this €21.000 stock car with €6.000 discount, sending my diesel to the recycle bin. An engine needs to breath, it needs air to operate and it needs to be turned on as long as possible for it to be efficient. With the battery eating start stop system smuthering the engine every time, it will break down faster. With diesels being designed as so called green engines with only 115g co2, they will break down much faster as everything inside that engine is compressed not being able to let air flow through it enough. Electric engines are only as green as the fossile fuel used to create that electric engine, one can drive 350.000km with a benzine before having an environmental disadvantage on the electric engine. No matter what you do, which car you buy, you will pay a lot of money , consume a lot of energy and pollute the environment one way or the other. The only good environmental decision you can take is not to have or buy a car. I am a very pleased Fiat 500L City Cross S Design owner, I absolutely love it.

@@autogefuehl oh, one last environmental comment : I drive only 15.000km annually. With a 159g co2 per km, I actually pollutes less than someone who drives 45.000km annually with a green 115g co2 per km car. Do the math, I did... Why is it so hard for governments to look at the yearly consumption to apply taxes, like they do with water and electricity and gas? Strange, is it not? Because that would decrease their income. Simple as that.
@autogefuehl5 жыл бұрын
interesting aspect. Probably because it is hard to measure how much everyone consumes per year in fuel
@Mastermindthreethousand5 жыл бұрын
@@autogefuehl no it's not. It's just as easy as other measurements. It can be checked via the connection applications on new cars with such options like the Uconnect system of Fiat or it can be checked by the official dealer during maintenance, sending it to the authorities or it can be checked by the yearly approval control for older cars... So many options, so little creativeness. It's easier indeed to tax the hell out of people from startup. Example given : A Ferrari V12 that drives only 2.000km annually vs a green car that travels 45.000km...compare that fictional tax to the register tax based on co2 exhaust of today and one knows instantly the fictional but correct taxation would cost the government some decent amount of pocket money.

As it turns out the display can also show kms/lt and if you had 12km/lt that means 8.3lt/100km. Because 12lt/100 km is a huge fuel consumption...

It delivers 33 mpg on trips and averages about 25 mpg around town on regular fuel with spirited driving. I also owned a Fiat 500 for three years with the same great reliability. I feel like we’re getting to a point where the state of infotainment systems really becomes embarrassing for a couple of brands. This one is a great example. Tastes differ and a don’t mind that manufacturers go their own ways with regard to styling, but many systems lack responsiveness and usability in a way that’s entirely ridiculous in an age where both good UX people and high-performance SoCs are available for cheap money. I think it’s about time that consumers become more vocal about this topic. Thanks for pointing out the bad performance in your review, Thomas!

Yes it does lack responsiveness in the infotainment side. I have a 2018 however I dont think judgment of cars should be based on infotainment systems my priority is handling and responsiveness of the drivetrain and suspension. And of course quality and aesthetics. I find mine with 6speed manual and the 1.4 to be quite remarkable braking is very good as well.
@Mastermindthreethousand5 жыл бұрын
The infotainment system comes in very handy but in no means it should act like a super computer. My main concern is the attention people pay to it while driving. I have an infotainment system visually well integrated into the dashboard not screaming for attention. It's useful, when standing still, for applying your favorite options and checking or unchecking features. When driving all I do is change radio channels and set the cruise control via the steering wheel and the navigation can be set to the center screen between the gauges. The rear camera and parking sensors are very helpful but that doesn't mean one should stop looking in the mirrors and sideways when parking. Infotainment comes after comfort, function, road performance. It can be very useful to complete a car, just unnecessary to be so responsive and high end. It is actually a good thing it reacts slow so you don't want to play with it all the time.

I rented the car in Spain with auto gearbox. I noticed the rolling back a lot when I was starting from being stopped on many occasions. The system that starts the engine again when releasing the breaks and hitting the accelerator was either very slow or wasn’t responding at times at all, so I ended up turning off the start/stop mode of the engine for the rest of the rental period. I was very concerned that on an inclined traffic light stop I would eventually end up hitting someone behind me. I also hated the indicator noise. Felt like they had installed a very old and untuned cuckoo clock in the dash. Other than that, great little car and easy to drive in the city, but indeed very artificial feel in the motorway and also in windy mountain roads.

@autogefuehl6 жыл бұрын
Welcome! See here our extensive resources concerning this topic. We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter. At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself. In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first. Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn-2hq2Qjd-jmsU List of practical reasons against animal skin seats: 1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it) 2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling 3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating 4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling 5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa 6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2Paf3p8gMZng5I) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla 7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather) To the environmental reasons: 1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below) 2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf 3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage. 4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body. 5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy. 6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production” 1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small. 2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette): Leather 17 kg CO2/m² PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m² Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m² Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m² So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half! 3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future. More special video episodes: 1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpecYn6dl7uVgLM 2. And another one right here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qn6xmJaCepV_erc 3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJrTiqmredh8bNU timecode starting 27:46 4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZirpGVpbsd0pKc 5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway. Manufacturers reactions: We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now. So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change! Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!

Does anyone have any opinions on how good / bad these cars are for creaks and rattles. This for me is one of the things that has really spoilt the long term ownership of some cars I have owned. I usually keep cars for 8 to 10 years if they stay reliable.
@Mastermindthreethousand5 жыл бұрын
I own a Fiat 500L for a week now. No particular creaks or rattles, but time and wear might influence that. The benzine version doesn't have a bottom plate so I ordered one for more sound insulation, better airflow and protection for the engine compartment. If you really have issues with creaking and noises, buy a very isolated car with lots of soft material and perhaps air suspension... The insulation on the 500L is better than my previous Astra SW, it is very acceptable but if it's silence you want you will need to look at the high end luxury cars of BMW, Mercedes, Lexus,... Take into account you are moving a heavy object over the mostly uneven road at medium or high speed with air and roll resistance... Some noises are just fine, if you hear rattling than sth is not attached properly.

I've found (via fiat uk) that arm-rests are an 'optional' so you don't have anywhere to rest your arm and the centre storage box is actually an open mouthed hole. WTF? Am getting really tired of this scrooge mentality, where the next thing will be the car makes asking to pay for a non abrasive steering as an 'extra', or we could take the car at a 'discount' and risk having our palm skin 'scrubbed'. Nice review, Tom, as usual but a suggestion will be to add a bit about what basic things are charged for.

And the new VW T Cross looks nice, but I'm not sure about 3-cylinder engines. I would really appreciate your opinion. TIA :-)

Michele Bicc Thank you so much for this info. I am new to Fiat so I did not know that. It saddens me because I need to buy a car this year, but the 2018 model doesn’t have some of the 2019 improvements I need. For instance, LED lights for night driving in dark country roads every night. Again, thanks so much for your response.

The brand has a bad reputation (some times with no reason), but this car doesn't have particular issues. Some of the first 1.6 diesel with MT had clutch problem, now resolved.

How can it have a poor reputation? It's brand new!! Also, most unreliable brands in top ten list doesn't mention Fiat. A manufacturer can have a great reputation and still produce a few faulty cars...or vice versa. Please stop generalising everything.
