No one ever seems to mention the seats in the Trailhawk. They are much better than the other trim levels (Same as the SRT Cherokee)

I've always been a Jeep Wrangler and Rubicon guy but I just purchased a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and was amazed how capable it is off-road and how great it rides on the road... I have the 2liter turbo and it has 270hp and 295fpt. I call it my Rubicon sports car.. I absolutely love it 😎👍 thanks for your post

My wife has the new Compass, I used to own a JK Wrangler, and I also used to have the Grand Cherokee as well, all are great vehicles but all have their pros/cons. I currently own a Cherokee and I have to say after driving literally almost every Jeep model I like it the best. It's got a great ride, good amount of room, decent power, great in bad weather and its super versatile. No matter what Jeep you go with though you wont be disappointed.

You should spend more time researching the vehicle. The grand Cherokee Trailhawk is full time 4x4 system with the Quadra-drive 2. In 4 low it locks the front and rear driveshaft and it also has the ability to send 100% of the motors power to a single wheel if needed in 4h and 4l. These things are next to unstoppable. Way better than a regular Cherokee. Rear lockers aren’t the be all end all. There’s a lot more to off roading than a locker.

I would definitely get the Grand Cherokee. Anything smaller is too small for me. I like to have good cargo room and a comfy ride is hugely important considering 95% of driving is on the road. Even for an offroad enthusiast

GC Trailhawk in fact does lock the elsd fully in Mud and Rock mode modes Snow and Sand is a little less locked. 4WD low ofcourse fully locked rear as well. Someone in GC forums used a scan tool and measured full pressure on the rear elsd at all times in those modes. Its a better system overall because its more versatile than the Cherokee locker.

From what I’ve read from FCA, the "electronic limited slip differential" or ELSD on QuadraDrive II can be thought of as an "electronically-controlled variable differential", in that it can be set to fully locked or fully open (like a typical locking differential), or in-between (to allow limited slip). That's obviously quite versatile and in my opinion better than an e-locker. I have a 2013 WK2 Hemi TrailHawk and I can attest to its locking ability.

@guy proulx Your comment might have made sense if you didn't say that the old cherokee was a body on frame. The old cherokee was NEVER BoF. It was the first suv with a monocoque body, like most CUV right now. That aside, while I myself I own a 2012 Grand cherokee, yes it will never go anywhere like that TRD will, and they never meant to compete with it. It is for people who wants a comfy SUV that have some degree of off road ability. The Grand cherokee, along with the 4Runner are the only SUV in their class to offer a proper transfer case and some off road gizmos.
@tanktheram
@tanktheram 6 жыл бұрын
guy proulx you might be talking about the Wagoneer from the 70's. However, independent suspension and unibody chassis has proven to give greater ground clearance and chassis rigidity. The air suspension is more adjustable, and more compliant than coil or leaf springs like your beloved Toyotas have. Reliability is great, as most commercial transport trucks run air suspension. Check your facts before you beak, and then look up Kelowna Snow Wheelers. No solid axle or leaf springs there. Independent front and rear, and air springs. Nothing else can touch them.
@tanktheram
@tanktheram 6 жыл бұрын
guy proulx Wagoneer ended in 1991. Grand Cherokee began in 1992. As for air suspension and commercial trucks? Try all off road dump and logging trucks. Longevity? Try 800,000 km of abuse on rough terrain before replacement. I work in industry, so don't argue with me. Spring suspension doesn't last in comparison. As for off road racing. You'd be surprised at how prevalent air actually is. The downside to air is changing temperature, increasing pressure... not necessarily reliability.

We had a 2019 4Runner as a rental and compared to the Grand Cherokees it really didn't hold up well in the comparison. Noticeably less power because of the old style 5 speed auto transmission that meant some "big" downshifts and noticeable high rpms on long inclines, compared to the 8 speed on the Jeep. The fuel mileage was only about 20 mpg at best whereas Grand Cherokees are 25 mpg over the same route and the worst thing of all was the seats, both my wife and I who are at different ends of the size scale, I'm 6' 4" and she is 5' 2" were in pain from the seat bases after a 100 miles or so, it actually gave me "butt burn" like I'd experience on a motorcycle over a similar distance. From our experience the Grand Cherokee was dramatically better, while I can't discount Toyota's reputation for longevity and reliability the 4Runner was immediately chalked of our list of potential new vehicles. The great thing about renting a vehicle is you get a decent test drive over 500-750 miles on a weekend away, I liked the 4Runner driving through town from the rental place to home, however had that been a dealer test drive and I'd bought one and then set of on a long trip, I'd have been crying after 100 miles to think I spent all that money on something so uncomfortable and that felt like it lacked power on inclines at the altitude we are at.

Since the GC Trailhawk has independent suspension front and rear, the differentials move with the body. Using the air suspension does actually increase the distance from the differentials to the road. Which is contrary to what you said early on. The GC’s haven’t run solid axles in many years
@maverick27502

@@wildbill23c Couldn't agree more. The A-arms/control arms don't really change all that much in the OR 1 or OR2. It's a capable crossover, but the wrangler will still spank it off-road. I'm hoping TFL clarifies the "doesn't change the height to the axle" comment. Also happen to own a '17 GC Trailhawk so it's always a point of contention that's it's an independent suspension and not live/solid axle.

I had a rental Grand Cherokee Trailhawk this last weekend, what impressed me most was it's on road abilities, quiet, smooth and powerful. I'm currently deciding between a Grand Cherokee and the Cherokee Trailhawk models. I love the Grand, but think it's just a little big for what is a second vehicle and one that will be used for commuting to work. However in the real world the price difference is nothing like what's suggested here. Firstly I don't know why anyone would need the V8 engine unless they are towing heavy loads regularly which seems at odds with why you'd buy this vehicle and not something I need as I have a Diesel pickup. So if the V6 is adequate there is not a huge price difference between the two models, probably more like $5k new, if you go mildly used the gap is even closer, so I'm finding it hard not to get the Grand Cherokee for its extra refinement and the fuel consumption is actually 1 mpg better on the highway according to the government figures than the Cherokee, on long trips I've averaged over 25mpg on all the Grand Cherokees I've driven - the problem is I still think the Cherokee is better for our needs, but it's hard to resist the Grand for such a similar price.

I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, 2017, which was totaled in the parking lot of my office Friday the13th. I loved it! I received a Jeep Badge of Honor Badge by completing 20 miles off road at Windrock, trail 16, I think. I have since replaced with a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with everything the Trailhawk had plus: 5.7 L Hemi, cold induction air intake, Borla cat back exhaust, plus everything I had on the Trailhawk, which I loved. Before I had the embellishments added, it did great off road at Off Adventure park in TN. I am looking forward to more adventures off road, in comfort like the beloved Trailhawk, oh, I now have a drone to follow me on the trails to launch from my center console. I love my Jeep and my highly modified 1985 CJ7!

I owned a 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk V6 and traded it in at 115K miles for a 2019 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk V6 and have done 40K miles so far. Between the two of them the cherokee was smoother on the regular streets feels like you're driving a regular car, kinda of zippy actually with the V6 in the smaller frame. Both handle amazing in the snow all across the western US and Alberta/BC Canada. Off road I do prefer the Grand Cherokee it just feels more solid and confident gripping the ground and the extra clearance is nice. I sprung for the grand because I wanted more cargo room, snowboarding trips with friends and car camping. One major benefit to the Grand Cherokee to the Cherokee was the tank size. The Cherokee's tank was only 16Gallons and at 21-23mpg the range isn't nearly as good as the 26gallon tank on the Grand Cherokee which has been giving me about the same MPG 21-22mpg. This is awesome for long solo road trips when I don't like stopping. I just slapped some BFG KO2's on the grand yesterday and stoked to see how they perform but hit some nice trails on the stock tires and it handled perfectly. No issues mechanically on the Grand, on the Cherokee I broke a strut and broke down due to spark plugs which I should've taken care of before a trip. Other than that no issues at all. The Difference in price between the Cherokee Trailhawk V6 and the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk V6 is only about $5K so it really wasn't a big stretch, payments only went up $75 a month.

Did you drive the V6 and Hemi back to back. If you did then you would probably find the Hemi underwhelming, at least that was my impression, definitely not worth its $3300 USD option price. I found the V6 on the GC Trailhawk to be more than enough power, it is comparable to a Cherokee TH with the V6, but the GCs 8 speed auto is considerably better than the Cherokee's 9 speed. I currently own a 2015 Cherokee TH and it is probably the most off road capable of the Trailhawks, but the GC is way more comfortable. I would probably have traded mine in on a GC Trailhawk, but after test driving the new Ranger I have decided to wait for the new Bronco.

I had a 2016 Jeep Renegade Dawn of Justice Edition. I loved the size, ground clearance, and heated everything features. The things I disliked were the transmission, rear hatch release location, 4-wheel drive system and halogen headlights. After owning the Renegade for two years, I traded it in for a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. With the Subaru's power to weight ratio and CVT, it felt similar to the Renegade. The ground clearance is the same as the Jeep, but with the symmetrical all-wheel drive, LED headlights and better build quality the Crosstrek won me over. For me, the all wheel drive system just does a better job in the snow(with snow tires) than the Renegade. In another year or two, I will try another Jeep......probably the Cherokee with the turbo! Cheers!

@@wildbill23c I think jeep called it the Active Drive System. The difference being jeep locked into the "Snow" setting did not split the power left to right or wheel to wheel like the Subaru does. Hence, when driving down a snowy/slippery road, the Jeep would almost dog-track at times and turning at an intersection it would take a wider radius than a Subaru's Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system.

I have always loved the Grand. I had a 98- 5.9L Limited. It was a bear. Also a 90 XJ and now a 1997 TJ. I also have a 2011 4Runner. My wife wanted a Grand, but I just don't trust Chrysler enough to finance their products. The Trailhawk is really cool. I dig it.

guy proulx, I do. Especially fully outfitted in off-road gear. The 4Runner has larger tires, solid rear axle, available lockers, and more ground clearance. On the road, the Grand is much more polished. It has a nicer interior, and an available Hemi. If they both had similar reliability and residual value, I'd have gone Grand. But I do love the 4Runner.

I’m on my third GC and specifically wanted a Trailhawk. I tried the V8 Hemi and unless you’re towing, don’t bother. The V6 felt more nimble and you notice the lighter weight. The V6 is quicker off the light as it doesn’t have to wind up that torque. Plus you save a bunch. I drive mine out on the beach every weekend and it handles great in the deep sand.

The grand’s elsd is better than a conventional selectable locker. Not only does it provide enough lock up to act like a locker (similar to the g80 clutch pack locker), but it can engage and disengage within milliseconds and safely at a much wider speed. The dual elsd of the wk and commander were so strong that when you crawled up steep obstacles lifting a wheel it would behave just like a locker transferring all torque to the wheel on the ground. I’ve never experienced the wk2 rear only elsd but I can’t imagine it became weaker. Now reliability and maintenance don’t favor it and they’ve had their share of problems early on. Idk about the engineering behind their unit, but you could set it up to slip before a driveline part would grenade protecting the truck. Obviously I’m not saying it will hold 37” tires with 5.56 gears on a crawler. But it’s plenty strong for what the wk would reasonably have.

I have a ‘19 JGC TH with the 5.7 and when shopping looked at the 4Runner TRD Off Road and Pro, the Cherokee TH, and others. Picked the JGC for many reasons but couldn’t get a lot of great info on rear locker vs ELSD. @TFLOffroad loved the series but please do a video addressing why having the locker might be better than the ELSD. Seemed to be a deciding factor here with not enough details as to why having the traditional locker would be better.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 6 жыл бұрын
Brandon Duke a locker locks both wheels together. Torque transfer requires resistance, so as the traction (resistance) levels change a locker will distribute torque dynamically to the wheel with more traction. A classic example is when the wheel lifts off the ground. All the torque will go to the wheel on the ground until it exceeds the grounds limit. The grands elsd works the same way. Except if you exceed the internal capacity of the clutches it will slip and allow torque to flow out of the wheel with less traction. But jeeps elsd has more than enough capacity for stock or similar sized tires to keep the wheels locked together. The g80 locker uses clutches as well, but is energized in a much different fashion.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 6 жыл бұрын
Brandon Duke 2nd reply. Also you can engage the elsd whenever necessary. The locker cannot be engages on the fly and under torque like the elsd can. Here are a couple videos showing the elsd acting like a locker not letting the lifted whee spin. You can also tell it’s not traction control with how the wheel rotates with with rest of the wheels. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKOZaJqga5yUhM0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2KneGCGa9SCfbs

William Todd exactly! For what the grand is the elsd is great. But add bigger tires and lower gears and it’ll have a tough time. The nice thing about the elsd a conventional preloaded clutch pack is that the preloaded one needs to be light enough to allow for normal diff action while the elsd comes in only when needed and can be much stronger. For a dedicated off road rig mechanically locking the axle is much more robust and virtually guarantees maximum torque transfer so long as it doesn’t break something. I always wondered at what point the g80 Chevy locker would fail as it uses clutches to lock the axle also.

@@KTMcaptain LSD is limited slip. Never locks and will never be as good as a locker. It slips by design hence the name.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 6 жыл бұрын
EGGINFOOLS wrong. Not all limited slip differentials are the same. So making generalities like that is false and ignorant. A basic clutch type lsd will not slip until a certain torque value is reached. That’s generally low to keep street ability high (low nvh). But as long as that torque value hasn’t been reached it will act just like a locker. A torsen uses gear thrust to resist differential speeds. That is generated through torque on helical gears. The elsd is a high pressure clutch pack. As long as the clutches aren’t overloaded, they won’t slip and will work exactly like a locker. Jeeps elsd are so strong that even under heavy torque loads climbing over obstacles the wheel will not spin. The Chevrolet g80 locker uses clutch packs as well, but is energized in a different manner. The elsd and g80 could both slip, but stock tires don’t generate enough torque to make them do so. They also are not energized normally so they do not resist normal differential action under normal driving situations. You’re welcome to watch several Quadra drive 2 videos and see for yourself that the elsd does in fact fully lock up. The WK chassis and Commander have front and rear, while the current WK2 chassis only has rear. But if you still think clutches slip, then I’d ask you if you understand how automatic transmissions work. Because they transfer torque through very similar clutch packs.
@EGGINFOOLS
@EGGINFOOLS 6 жыл бұрын
@@KTMcaptain You should do more research. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZOwi2ysmL6Jick Also an LSD slips. Period! You said it yourself. After a certain amount it will slip. They might be a little different but a LSD bares that name for what it is. Put the full weight and power of a vehicle on an incline and that LSD will slip. Do that with a G80 and it will lock automatically and power up without slipping because IT LOCKS! How can you dispute that? This LSD DOESN'T LOCK.
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 6 жыл бұрын
EGGINFOOLS first off. You clearly didn’t watch that video lol. That video shows two clutch packs on either side providing the lock up. They call them friction discs. Lol. It’s a multiplate clutch pack like in an automatic transmission. A normal lsd slips at a low torque value. The elsd torque value is so high that it DOESNT slip even climbing over severe obstacles.
