CAROLINA KAYAK ADVENTURES Thanks man. I definitely think I made the right choice switching to the outback. I do know at some point I’m going to break something but the stress free fishing is worth replacing a fin to me. Just let me know when you are ready to fish. I’m tired of this 40 deg temp and the winds blowing 20mph though.

Addicted Angler I went through 2 drives on the coosa in one year. Jackson sent me a new drives but still it was a pain. Also if you follow tony from salt strong he also went through a drive within a year. My problem was grease leaking from the bottom and then eventually got rough to pedal. The other problem I had was the housing are wobbling like a tire off balance.

Just did a demo in the outback and you only need a slight pull on the cable to change direction. , I have seen videos with people pulling really hard on the cables to go from forward to reverse no wonder some of them break. The key is to have the pedals in the netural position and then it requires only the slightest pull on the release cables .

Thank you for posting this video. I want to purchase a pedal drive but was undecided between the Hobie and the Jackson because I fish shallow saltwater flats and back bays on the Texas Gulf Coast. Now all I need to decide is the Hobie Outback or the Hobie PA 14. I'm 6'6 and I want to be comfortable pedaling the yak. I would like to save a thousand bucks and stick with the new outback. But if I'm not comfortable then I will to go with the more expensive and heavier Hobie PA 14.
@MudDuckFishing

@jerrykrobby
@jerrykrobby 5 жыл бұрын
d81gartica I would recommend definately test both of them out. I have a PA 14 and fish in 6" of water without any issues. But paddling the 14 is not fun! Also consider transporting it. I have a trailer so it's no problem for me but if you'll be hauling your kayak in a truck you may get tired of the weight of the PA 14 (I know I would). The seat and deck space on the 14 are hard to beat tho (I can lay a 28" red across the floor of my 14). One more thing- the Outback has gear tracks to mount your gear on where the PA 14 does not (it only has H Rails). So most everything you want to attach to the PA 14 needs the H Rail clamp accessory which adds $25 to the cost of each accessory (rod holders, fish finder, etc.). I've spent an extra $150 easy just so I can attach my rod holders and fish finder to the H Rail. Hope this helps.

@@jerrykrobby thanks for the info. I did my research on both yaks. I would lose about 3 inches of leg room in the outback vs the Pa14 and Pa12. I did found out the Pa 14 and the Pa12 had the exact same amount of leg room. Only thing is the pa12 is only 200 bucks cheaper than the 14. So hopefully the outback will work out for me.

@@d81gartica awesome! I'm sure you've looked at all your options but if not you might take a look at the Hobie Compass. It's about $500 less than the Outback and has a little more leg room than the Outback but still has the same width and stability. Good luck!

I find myself using my 2019 outback more than my coosa fd. Its easier to get in and out of the water and the tank well space is more accommodating. I hate the hobie in shallow, if you don't take the drive out you get stuck with the fins.
@MudDuckFishing
@MudDuckFishing 5 жыл бұрын
OffDayAngler I’ve never had to take the fins out yet. I just put the position against the hull. The only time I take them out is when I pull up to the ramp. I think the only time the fins dont work in shallow water is if you have less than 4 inches between the kayak and bottom.

I have a Coosa FD and I'm sure you noticed that this kayak does not track very straight. It seems I always have to have one of my hands on the steering knobs to assure that the kayak is going in the direction I want it to. This can be an issue when you are trying to fish. I bought the kayak hoping that with a pedal drive system I would have both hands free to fish. My solution? Modify the existing rudder so it has more control. While you may think that would cause issues using it in a shallow water situation, my "DullFinn" rudder is self-retracting, much like the Coosa FD propeller system. Check it out on my video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYmUdI18f7OdpLs - I may start fabricating these if enough interest is shown.

How big of a deal would you say is not having the instant reverse on the hobie? I fish in current most of the time and this is the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on a hobie. I have seen where it is a deal breaker for some. Nice review!!

Trippster33 For me it’s not a big deal at all I only use reverse maybe once or twice and outing. When I do use it it is never urgent that I need to use it but if it is urgent I know I can be moving backwards in 6 seconds. Probably faster now since I’m used to it.

There is a property of a spinning propeller called P-factor. I don’t know if this is what you have. But if the prop is not completely perpendicular to the direction of travel, on side of the prop gets more of a bite on the water than the opposite side because one side has a higher angle of attack of the prop blades than the other. If you can tweak the trim up or down a little would be an interesting experiment.
@MudDuckFishing
@MudDuckFishing 5 жыл бұрын
Jerry Bevers I see what you are saying. I think the problem is the skeg isn’t 100% solid. I think the slight movement it has steers it left or right depending on what side of the skeg the pressure is applied. It does it when you are not spinning the propeller as well as when you are. I think if they took more time to see that everything is centered and rock solid and made a rudder that cuts water instead of the inline rudder it would stay true.

Jim L when I first got my outback I was 250 and able to throw a cast net off of it. My friend who weighed 300 came down and tried it out because he’s moving here and wants one, he was able to stand and paddle. He is 6’ I think the stability will be there no problem but I would suggest trying one out either at a shop or rent one since you are so tall.
