2019 Honda CB650R - Bargain Bike of the year?

I was lucky enough to grab a couple of weeks with the new Honda CB650R a little while back. I was a little unsure about the bike until I threw a leg over it and got it out on the road. It's certainly more than the sum of its parts, and the allure of that zingy four pot motor is addictive. Could it really be the bargain bike of 2019

@Jay M I bought a CB650F in late 2016... All matt Black..At first I thought it was great but with longer ownership a bit of a niggle. the transmission sounded harsh. I took the bike to a dealer but they said there was nothing wrong, but the damage had been done ...I wasn't a 'happy bunny'. This annoyed me so much I sold it and bought a hardly used 2014 Triumph Street Triple 675R. which I have to say I should have bought the Triple in the first place. Having said that I haven't ridden the latest incarnation of the CB650 so cannot comment...I suspect a bit more R&D went into the new one.

In case any other 650R owners are having trouble with the dash, stick a matte screen protector on there. I got a set of 2 off ebay for $10 and it completely eliminates the glare that makes the display hard to read. Huge difference in daylight.

Great bike for the money. I like the always on front indicators, had them on my Africa Twin. I believe they add to the front presence of the bike and don't confuse people at all. People associate indicating with a "flashing" light and not a solid light.
@tonebonetones
@tonebonetones 5 жыл бұрын
......No, they are a remarkably stupid and dangerous idea..........a car driver glancing around quickly in heavy traffic will see an indicator and the colour orange. Stamped into his driver brain is indicators are for exactly that .....indicating direction change or hazard warning from a broken down vehicle. Always on running light indicators are a recipe for confusion and accidents where drivers often have micro seconds to assess heavy, fast traffic and make decisions second by second to drive safely.

Purchased mine on August 8th. In just a shade under three months, I'm approaching 3,000 miles on it. Absolutely love it. Best bike I've ever owned, hands down. Front signals on is required in the United States by law, so maybe they didn't want to do separate electronics for Europe. I added a tail tidy and heated grips, which are nice as it progresses to cooler weather. Great review! Enjoyed your take on it.

Excellent review, thanks. I really like your presentation style. I 100% agree with your observation on the DRL. I had a CBR600RR in France, which had the indicators on all of the time as a DRL function. When you operated one of the indicators the DRL stayed illuminated on the side you were not indicating on. This presented other road users with a bike coming towards them showing one solid amber light and one flashing amber light. How the hell other drivers were supposed to ascertain the riders actions from a split second glance is beyond me. I thought it was a very dangerous setup and I disconnected the DRL function to just leave the headlight permanently illuminated on dipped beam, as is usual.

Just had a 500km ride today, all kinds of roads, the ride was a blast. Love the bike. The positives are mostly whats said in the video, so let me do some negatives that are not in the video. Quality is an issue with the bike on certain parts, and i know several other owners with same issues. In general, surfaces like display, engine paint, headlight scratch very easy, especially the display, get a screen protector right away. I always thought the MT09 had poor quality plastics compared to "Hondas", nope...Honda CB650R is no better.

One of the best reviews I've seen on this. Concise and waffle free, plus with the killer line about the tyres "Stuck like the face of a 5 year old boy's to a Ferrari dealer ship's window" :) One thing, this bike has a 15.4 l tank, and range of about 200 M. The CB650F has a 17.3 l tank, range about 225 M. The CB500F has a 17.1 l tank, range about 275 M. A lack of range can be really annoying, why Honda put a smaller tank on this as compared to the other 2 bikes sure beats me. (my current bike has a range of about 150 Miles !) Also I learnt on the CB125R, and I found Honda's new display very hard to see in bright light. All that said, I do like the CB650R , I think it looks better than the other 2. I might get one as a second bike for commuting, but the range on the CB500F is tempting ...

Front Amber lights on, not really a big issue in my experience, here in the USA a lot of motorcycles have that feature, but then we are used to it. And I'm a Harley-Davidson rider.

@@mancavemoto USA cars tend to have front amber and red rear indicators. here is where it gets strange on a motorcycle all turn signals are amber, but if the rear turn signals also works as a brake light or running light it has to be red, my Iron 883 the turn signals are also brake and running lights and my rear lenses are red, there is no actual tail light, now in some countries the Iron 883 does have a tail light. They even sell a kit here in the USA to put one on . LOL years ago like 1992, I had a Sportster that I put front signals on the rear so I would have brake and running lights, left the amber lens on, cop stopped me and told me I needed red lenses on it. Of course there are the riders whom just take all of that off and run a head light and tail light and the other whom put the smaller ones on all for style. But each to his-her own. the only light mods I want to make are going from bulbs to LED.

I dont have the quickshifter and we only get the restricted version in Oz. I have had a few false neutrals when riding hard, usually 3 to 4 which may be the gear lever position but it goes in 2nd attempt ok. I have taken my GF on the back, she finds the seat and pegs comfortable but we only do 1-2 hour runs. She is 5'3" and 50kg. Its ok for me on the front too at 5'11" (180cm) and 90kg, with the step up seat and std suspension settings. I have added a tail tidy and adjustable levers as clutch was a stretch and engaged at end of travel. I would like to derestrict, add QS, screen and ventura race rack.

The new model is beautifully designed, and very sophisticated in the way that Yamaha does with flagship projects, but it fell a little flat because of the progress that had been made in the interim with respect to the power made by the newer litre bikes from all around the world. I think that took a little of the shine off the project. A new Vmax is hard for me to imagine unless they were to make it more stripped down to a fighting weight compared to the one they now have (I don't even know if they are still building it?). Either way, V4s rock for sure, and Yamaha engineering is second to none! Cheers!

Hi Paul, I've been using one for my DAS, it is heavy for it's size, not helped by my own large frame. I found slow speed manoeuvres challenging, especially as the initial throttle response is a bit jerky. I had to just allow the engine to idle, while feathering the back brake, to do the U turn and slalom. I've been using one again today in practice for my Mod 2 and must say that the feeling the throttle is not responding followed by a sudden surge, is far from confidence inspiring, especially when turning at junctions/ turn offs!! It's fine in a straight line when you can just open it up, but when trying to feather the throttle it seems like it's ALL or NOTHING!! I'm going to try another bike tomorrow, the thought of my Mod 2 in a strange town is daunting enough, without adding extra unpredictability?!!

As an old, old school motorcyclist, I am giving it serious thought to buying a bike next year. Reasons I wouldn't buy this are your 2 'niggles', I consider to be serious flaws.......the day time running lights indicators (an accident simply waiting to happen on Britain's congested roads) and the God awful display speedo. In days of yore, we had two, big clocks. There is a reason fighter jets have clocks and dials rather than digital readouts. .....Nasa research established long ago that the info a clock gives vis a vis a digital readout can be taken in by the average human far quicker, and a quick glance at a pointer on a clock dial shows its position, literally....at a glance. ....whereas a digital readout has to be read. Fractions of a second to aid decisions can mean the difference between catastrophe and a safe landing. Not to mention the fact digital displays for the main part look cheap ....which is precisely what they are and why there are there, imo. ...... and aesthetically they look bloody awful ....even on the most expensive of bikes. I always liked the old Honda four hundred four from the mid 70's.....what a little diamond of a bike. Where is the equivalent of that, these days? This Honda, here? Well, possibly it may be around the same weight or even lighter, due to advances in engineering technology, but not with that casio calculator display.

Actually, I'm trying to decide between the two myself. I've always favoured the XSR 700 because of it's funky looks, and the customizing possibilities. It really appeals to me, and is more my style. OTH, the Honda is really slick, and it looks original and it's very nice looking as it is. It's also faster, and it has better brakes. They're both good performers, but in different ways. Hard choice for me. Why do you prefer the Yam?
@SlingingLead
@SlingingLead 4 жыл бұрын
@@rickducharme7429 I'm glad you asked. For me it was mostly the engine, Yamaha's CP2. It is lighter, simpler and has more torque especially on the low end. The engine note on the 270 degree crank makes a magical exhaust note (with a full exhaust redo.) Like you, looks come into play for me. The XSR 700 to me is the quintessential modern standard motorcycle. It looks like a UJM, which in my mind is how motorcycles are supposed to look. The more I hear about this bike however, the more I'm not so sure which one I would buy. The brakes are better on the CB650r. The suspension is better on the CB650r. Sure, it doesn't have as much torque and it comes on later. But it isn't bad...just less. Looks were a major sticking point. That was until I saw a CB650r in silver from a British youtuber! Alas they are only available in red in the US and I can't stand red so the tank would have to be painted. I also saw a youtube video where an Akrapovic full exhaust was installed (EnglishBikerDan) and it too makes beautiful sounds when allowed to breathe. I think even with the CB650r in silver, the XSR still looks better. The brakes and suspension on the XSR could be greatly improved with the premium you pay for the CB. You couldn't go wrong with either bike. But I think the Honda has an edge out of the box.
@rickducharme7429
@rickducharme7429 4 жыл бұрын
@@SlingingLead : Great! Now, after having read your comment, I'm more confused than I was to begin with! I'm in the Great White North. We get the Honda in red and in black. Isn't it always the way that they decide not to import the colour you want, no matter what? Generally, the US gets more and better choices than us, so I feel your pain. BTW, I gave the wrong price for the bike - it's C$9499, not C$9599, so we Canucks are pretty much stealing this thing compared to everybody else - another anomaly. In any event, I went back to square one, and now the Triumph Street Twin is back in the mix. I can set that bike up as I would like it for maybe a grand or so more than the XSR or the Honda. But, then I have to consider the power characteristics of the three bikes, and even with pipes, a decat ex-pipe, and a download the Street Twin is making less power than the other two, while still looking better than them. But, to me the Triumph is how a proper motorcycle is meant to look - and that's no small thing. Maybe I should have left that sleeping dog lie. I watched EnglishBikerDan's pipe video, and I've heard the 650R in anger with an Akrapovic somewhere else. and Akrapovic does magical things with every bike (including the XSR, BTW), and the Honda sounds too good. No question the Honda is better out of the box, but, strangely perhaps, that is not necessarily a big positive for me as my mindset includes fooling around with the looks of a bike. It's an expensive, but nonetheless enjoyable and satisfying endeavour for me. Also, the power characteristics and motor of the Yam are very much what I prefer to the Honda and Triumph both. But, I'm pretty sure I will spend more on the XSR than even the Triumph before I'm done if I'm being honest. The one real sticking point for me is the tiny wheelbase of the thing. I've heard that the bike gets a bit squirrelly at speed, and at my age I don't really need any unexpected cheap thrills. I've heard that the brakes on the XSR can be greatly improved with better pads and steel lines, and that the suspension is an improvement over the MT-07, so that's not a big problem for me with respect to the Honda over the Yam, but it's just another way to spend more money. Here the XSR is C$100 more than the Honda to begin with, and it rankles to be spending out the gate just to bring a bike up to snuff to begin with. Well, sorry to have turned the hose on you when you didn't even ask for a drink of water, but I'm still trying to work out my thoughts; I guess I'll have to stew a little more yet. Thanks for your thoughts, but it sounds to me as if you're pretty sure about the XSR 700. It's hard to go wrong with that bike - it's a Yam, it's cool, and it won't break the bank too much. I would like to know your thoughts about which colour you like, and what you plan to do with the thing once you get your hands on it. Best of luck to you, and Cheers!
@SlingingLead
@SlingingLead 4 жыл бұрын
@@rickducharme7429 , so now you're entering Triumph into the mix? Ooooo, that complicates things immensely. For me that would include the Street Triple R and the Speed Twin. Down south these bikes command quite a premium over the Japanese bikes though. Since you seem to like tinkering, Triumph and other aftermarket producers have about a trillion things to add to any bike. I really do like the Yamaha XSR 700. If I do buy one it will be a 2018 model in silver (British racing green not available in the US) and I will put Metzeler semi knobbies on it. And a full exhaust kit from Akropovic or Yoshimura. But then again if I can find a good deal on a Triumph...I am as confused as you are Rick. Nostrovia!

Xsr700 is basically a nicer FZ07 and most people would agree this bike shits on an FZ-07. Cb650r vs fz09 might be a little better comparison despite the obvious power discrepancy

Better than the Tiger given it's price Tony? What's a major service cost compared to Triumph's?

Obviously quite different bikes. I can take the Tiger where I wouldn’t take the Honda and arguably it’s more practical. But for a fun all round naked bike I think the Honda is a cracking deal.

Being a complete beginner myself (and depending on the laws where you live) I think it is a great beginner bike. I went from the Honda Renegade 250 at my MSF course straight to the 2018 version of this bike. Takes a little more learning I think on a 4cyl for starts on a hill and such since you have to get the RPMs up a bit more to avoid stalling, but it has helped me ease into riding quite well. Always test if you can, might be stuff you don't like about how it handles.

it produces 80 hp @ 11k, and 43 ft-lbs peak @ 8k. it's only got about 33 ft-lbs @ 3k, and doesn't hit 40 until about 7.3k. (Cycle World) this bike costs more than a z900. that's f'king ridiculous. just get an sv650, or a z650... you'll be happier with more power and less weight, and much happier with more money for gear. look up the dyno graphs. naked bikes are about low and midrange torque. the cb650 and cb1000 do not compete in that area, at all. all the big names know how to make fun bikes. so if you don't have a personal bias, it really does come down to the numbers.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I hear you, but looking at numbers on spec sheet kinda misses the point of this video. Some people like low and midrange torque, some people like to get a bike singing higher up the Rev range. This bike is more fun than just plain numbers would suggest.

Great bike but over priced .. compare this to Yamahas mt-07 or even MT-09 , xsr900 or kawasaki Z900 , Suzuki gsxs 750.. I love Honda but again your not getting the best bang for your buck on this bike

The mt07 really isn't as stable as the 650r though. The Mt really feels squishy on the brakes and suspension dives way easy. The Honda is a a good middle ground for people looking for a sporty tourer or in this case a neo Cafe.

I guess it depends on where you are based....pricing seems different around the world. The comparable Ducati is the 797 and it is a £1000 more, and there's no real comparable Triumph at that price point. The MT is certainly well priced
