Great overview, thank you 😊. I purchased the 15" version in May 2021 but viewing this review makes me wish I had purchased the 17" version instead. As of 2021, HP's Command Center software does allow for special effects (i.e. customization) on your RGB keyboard such as flashing and wavy lighting, etc.

@@creaturecore13 the only thing I changed was render at 8000 bit/s vs 7000 bit/s, otherwise everything is the same. I spent a solid week on it for only just over 5000 views or $5 in add revenue. Consequently, with me not uploading any other video that week You Tubes algorithm doesnt push you as much and my subscriber rate declined. I was also pissed at the performance of my Y740 500 not video. Same amount of work, comparing it to the Y540 for about 6000 views. Sometimes I feel that I am wasting my time.

The main difference on the 15t is that they have made performance mode use less watts and default gives you a 5 fps hit compared to performance. Must be because of less thermal headroom in the chassis. I would like to get the 17" Y740 and see what that is like 👍

Have one question (perhaps, you've been already asked the same, but still...) - can't really choose between Lenovo Y740-17 inch with RTX 2070 Max-Q and HP Omen 17 with RTX 2080. To mention, the difference in FPS between two these GPUs is not an issue. In that particular case build quality, design, screen, temps and fan noise are more important for me. I was going to buy the 17" at one point but given I have tried the Omen 17t I think I would go for that. I wish I had actually bought it over my 15t actually. It runs great with the default setting.

I will always have a soft spot for HP laptops. Because I had a HP pavilion dv6809WM throughout college and it was one of the most reliable machines I've ever had. and then my dorm mate had a custom HP hdx18 with an AMD phenom X6 processor and an Nvidia GeForce 180M in it. not to mention the stylish designs of both machines, especially the chrome and silver of the HDX model, is beautiful to me even to this day.

The Omen 17" have a very good cooling sistem in my opinion. Can keep the temperatures pretty low and to my surprise the coolers are quiet on the max fan.

Considering purchasing the Omen 17t with the 2080 and i9 considering the ridiculous deals right now. Think this video sold me on it. Most common complaint I have heard with the Omens is the heat on the CPU, but I think through a thorough undervolting that can be resolved. Repaste always too if needed..maybe liquid metal..hmmm.. And with an i9 even undervolted I imagine it will perform pretty well.

After originally getting the 15" version fully loaded with the RTX 2080 Max-Q and i9 CPU, I was a little disappointed that my temps seemed to hit 99°C in benchmarks even with an undervolt, yet HP assured me this was normal/not defective. However, I just got the 17" with the same specs (albeit full Max-P 2080 now, so moar power!) And man it's sooo much better. Temps barely hit 90°C in the same benchmarks WITHOUT an undervolt, and WITH an undervolt they barely even hit 80°C - huge difference. On top of that, performance is roughly 20-30% faster overall (most of that increase is in the GPU but the CPU also saw a jump due to the lower temps and therefore no thermal throttling). On the 15" my highest Timespy bench scores with a CPU undervolt and GPU overclock were around 7,800, but on the 17" I'm getting over 10,000. In Firestrike, it's 17,000 vs 20,500. If anyone's on the fence about which one to get, I've had both and I strongly recommend the 17"! The only down side is that it is of course a bit bulkier, but it's actually still one of the most slim and light non-Max-Q full 2080 laptops you can get, while also being the cheapest, as far as I've seen. Overall, very pleased with the 17".

@@OWNORDISOWN Yeah with the 17" inch you're basically just getting more (Max-P GPU, better thermals, and larger screen) for the same price. Also, I agree that the hinge design is probably the least-good aspect of the model, makes it more fragile and prone to flexing and backlight bleed by being so close to the center. On top of that, it puts a lot of strain on the center bottom bezel which actually causes it to start to separate from the screen just a little over time. Not good. But it's my only real complaint for an otherwise well designed system at a very competitive price.

A bit overkill for music production, wouldn't you say? There are much lighter and thinner laptops that can easily do music production, and much cheaper. RTX cards don't make music. Unless you plan to do some heavy gaming, look for a 1650, or if you don't plan to game at all, you don't even need a Dedicated GPU.

Hi Steve, great video and awesome channel. Steve I have few questions as I have dilemma as to what to chose since I'm new to gaming laptops but I need one. For me look/ keybord layout or screen size is not important. (I would tend to get 17'' but i will take easily 15"). Budget is up to 2200USD if it is worth it, but I would rather spend around 1800USD. I was considering the Y740 with 2080mq/144mhz/gsync/300nits -My concerns are: Slow screen response time as to compared to 3ms from asus for example also low brigtnes? 1750USD Or the Y540 with 2070mq/144mhz/gsync/500nits/HDR - concerns are same as above, brightness is no more issue. 1550USD Or the Scar 3 G531GW-DB76 with 2070/240mhz/ NO-Gsync/ concerns no gsync. 1900usd Scar 2 same as above but 144hz display and NO GSYNC. MSI ge75 ? Im clueless... I have saved quiet a lot to get this so I dont want to regreat for example having no GSYNC but at the same time will I see ghosting on the Y740 or the Y540. Or if I grab the scar Will i be missing on the GSYNC. DO you think thunderbolt is a must these days. Just to note that I want to play BF5 on ultra high so FPS is concern. What do you think Steve? What would be your choice if you have this money and what is other alternative if you have one? Thank you

I think Gsync is worthwhile - unless you want long battery life in which case I think the MAG 15 is a great choice. Before I bought my Omen 15t and tried the Omen 17t I would have bought the GE75. I reviewed the 8750h/2070 one and it has great thermals, great speakers and great screen. I wanted an i9 though and it was expensive. I also preferred Gsync so I bought the 15t to review. You get the 240 Hz and Gsync. I don't think you will have any regrets with either. In case you are interested I am selling My Acer Triton 500 i7 8750h/ RTX 2080 MQ 2.5 TB NVME storage plus repasted, 144 Hz Gsync 1080P (has a mux switch to switch to hybrid graphics) $1800 and my Clevo P9870TM 17.3" i9 9900k / GTX 1080 / 2560 x 1440 120 Hz Gsync $2500. Nicolas dos Santos it should be similar to my I9 15t I suspect. Depends on how much power they put to the CPU. I’m currently testing the i7 x2s 15t and they push 70w during gaming to the cpu and the 2070mq upto 90w, with an undervolt and capping the long term max to 55w it runs great even with auto fan and high performance mode. They are very competitive. Check for 3rd party coupons too. I got one that gave me 10% back via PayPal.

Thanks! I suspect the MSI 9750h will hold a higher boost clock without the need for tweaks as it will have better cooling, but I dont think it's available with an i9 nor have Gsync. The speakers will be better in the MSI for sure. If they are priced similarly and you dont mind giving up Gsync the GP75 may be the way to go. I like Gsync personally and you can have a 240hz option too if you like.

@@AT93x I dont think there is any reason to worry. The hardest bit will be to get the max fan option in their command center. That does help. The i9 in my 15t works great, even in high performance mode. I just have a undervolt and have all cores at 4 ghz. In the i7 version of the 17t you can see that default works well but if you undervolt/ reduce CPU clock it will lower temps. All depends on how many watts is being pushed to your CPU. There has never been a laptop that I have not been able to cool so should you need my help just let me know.

Thanks! If you want an i9 and or full powered 2070 or 2080 then the Omen is naturally the choice. If you want a GTX 1660ti or 2060 then it's a close call. If you want TB3 or SD card reader then again the Omen is the choice. If those things are not important I do like the fan and turbo options provided by the Helios 300 and that would swing me in favor of that.

Hi mate. That's a SATA m.2 isn't it? They usually do work but it depends if they have it as PCIe only. I put an Intel 660P in my 15t, they are cheap and work great- faster than a SATA drive. If you have your heart set on that drive I recommend asking their support to be 100% sure.

So I received my laptop yesterday, but it arrived damaged so I’ll return it. Perhaps I might go up a notch and get either a 2070 max-p Omen 17 or a 2060 Mech-17 (~$100 cheaper). Wondering how much the performance differ between an eluktroboosted 2060 and a regular 2070 in actual gaming? And since I run some demanding simulation software for extended period, which one do you think handle the heat better?

@@corsamc12 hi, that's a shame. Well, the 2070 Max P is on par with a 2080 MQ , so in Shadow of the Tomb raider the 2060 Eluktroboost was 82 fps, and 90 when overclocked. The 2080 MQ was 95 fps. In Far Cry 5 the 2060 Eluktroboost was 96 and the 2080 MQ was 97. So not a lot of difference. I think the Omen 17 with the default setting will run cooler than the Mech 17 with Eluktroboost. That will definitely need an undervolt.

Hi @OWNorDisown., Ive been watching watching a lot of your video's last night and you mentioned a few times how fan you of the MSI GE66 Raider. Would you recommend this laptop over the Raider? Recently i've bought the MSI GE66 Raider 10SE-677NL, and to be quite honest, i was pretty shocked by the sound and mic quality. Its nearly impossible to communicate without headset, and after a while nihamic/realtek caused the voicechat to reduce by a lot. Since i used to have a 17 inch Omen laptop before the raider i've been concidering to go back to that size since i'm used to the width and numbpad. My biggest candidates are the HP Omen 17-cb1981nd and Lenovo Legion 5 17IMH05H. Could you please help me with a recommendation? i've been stressing for a few days since i have only a limited time to retour the laptop if i'm deciding to replace the 15inch Raider.

I can’t find a better deal for the performance anywhere else. I’m not a big fan of how it looks but I’m pretty sure this be the one I go with. It has much more than everything I need for a way better price than everyone else.

I agree ! When I bought my Omen 15t I was on the fence about buying the i9/2080 Omen 17t. At the time I bought it because I thought I would get more views on it than the 17" , but now that I got to use the 17" I think I wish I went that route, with a 240 Hz display. Still, I really like my 15" Omen and I think anyone buying this 17" will like it too.

Well, my Triton 500 with a 2080MQ has a 180w brick, so allowing another 35w for the 2070 Max P you should be OK, but there is no denying it is close. The Omen x2s I just unboxed came with a 230w brick for an i7/ 2070MQ...unfortunately the connector is different 😥

I was investigating this laptop a few months ago before all the reviews and my conclusion was this is a very good laptop for its price, probably the best. After a few months i can say i did the right choice. This is a really good product. Very recommended. Just make sure you buy the new model with the new cooling system

The Gpu is a cool customer sits at 68C, on performance mode, cpu in games like battlefield V it runs around 88C at 3.7 ghz it can’t maintain max boost so you’re better off limiting the power to 55 watts and it runs smooth with g sync.

I got this with the 2070 RTX, and I have no complaints on the performance. I have not tested any power hungry games yet, but the fan noise got very loud when I started installing them. It's almost like it knows what is coming... I have to spend some time figuring out if the fan noise will become a problem. When playing Heroes of the Storm, running at about 150-200 fps with everying on max, I got complaints from a friend that the mic picked up a lot of noise from the fans.

Hey, love the channel. New Sub from me. I have a question. I am in the market for a new gaming laptop, with the caveat being that I want a quiet (relatively speaking) laptop. I'm hoping to pay around the price of a helios 300 with the same specs/performance but I know the helios gets very loud. What is your recommendation that fits there? Battery life, weight, etc aren't a consideration. Only performance and noise. I am willing to manually undervolt and OC as well as needed. Thanks!

Thanks for the sub Michael ! I assume you are after a 17" laptop ? It is interesting, I would say that my Clevo P870TM is probably the quietest at idle, strange as it sounds. I put in an i9 9900k and repasted it. I will probably sell it once I do a final review on it. Other than that, the GT76 has great cooling and is pretty quiet - but that has two power bricks ...The GE75 and the Omen 17t had the same idle fan noise and both quiet under load with a bit of tweaking. Like I said in this video - even though I really like the GE75, the i9/2080 / 240 Hz panel option on this Omen 17t is a great deal. I have tweaked my 15t (i9/2089 MQ) to run at 4 Ghz on all 8 cores when the CPU load is 40% or less, I'm sure you could do better on the 17".

I would greatly appreciate help with choosing between these 2 (omen is 280€ cheaper): MSI GE75 9SG : i7 9750H - RTX 2080 - 1To SSD - 16gb RAM HP Omen 17" : i7 9750H - RTX 2080 - 512gb SSD - 8gb RAM (will upgrade to 16) My only criteria is perfomance over time/cooling. The Omen is all aluminum and is better built for sure and you get Gsync too so from that perspective that is the better value. The GE75 has the better cooling and its CPU probably boosts a bit higher on sustained loads at stock but if you can undervolt the Omen then it should run great. My 15" Omen runs all 8 cores at 4Ghz just fine. Battery life and speakers are better on the GE75 .

Good temps here. I like this Omen. :) Same temps like Strix G... but I thought the price is higher :D. What about the screen? I saw your device has some backlight bleeding... but the quality? Is better than Strix? Thanks for the review. This Omen model has not yet appeared in Romania... but I saw it in Germany for a good price, but more expensive than a Strix G with 150 euros - made especially for Germany - I did not know that the market differs very much - some models are made for Eastern Europe (a poorer quality ), and others come especially for western Europe. Many will not recognize, but this is the truth. That is why many are surprised why we have cheaper devices here than in the west. :D

That is good to know, I always thought that Eastern Europe would be cheaper, but perhaps the cost of living there is much higher than when I lived in the UK. I would say the screen is better than the Strix G, 144 HZ,Colours seem OK despite it not being super bright. I do prefer the 144 hz panel on my Omen 15t though.

PS: I know that the products made especially for western Europe are much more qualitative than those made for the east, I know from retailers but also from a certain manufacturer. Obviously, the products are identical, only the lot differs. It is exactly as in the sale of shoes - a pair of nike costs 20 euros in vietnam, and in the official store in europe it costs 150 euros.

Thanks for the detailed review. I just got the new 2020 model 17-cb1070nr with RTX 2060. The CPU reaches 100°C with MAX fan and throttles the CPU during Cinebench and gaming. Can it be resolved by undervolting or should I replace it with another laptop. Since I shipped it from US to Kuwait it would take a month to return and get another one.

Not certain about the program, but I keep seeing throttle stop as a solution, seems like the program to help with thermal problems. Hope mine doesn't turn up with the same flaws.

I'm entirely amazed at the thermal solution offers by HP OMEN, really really good!! Unlike the DELL G7 2070 SUPER model that I have now, It's hot like microwaving foods after 20 mins in highly demanding games. 97 C most of the time, sometimes 100 C, Jesus.

How come i see this lap is drawing more than 40W yet doesn't get stable clock speed. And mine runs around 76C never goes beyond 80C. What's the science here. Please enlighten

Battery life: The Omen will be the worst, Price to performance: Helios 300, Gsync: Y740 and Omen 15t , if you want an i9: Omen 15t, screen: Y740 500 nits, speakers: Y740 and ROG Hero, Cooling: ROG Hero, also MSI have good cooling depending on the model number you are looking at. SD card reader: MSI and Omen 15. Webcam: probably Helios 300
