Its bizarre to see these guys grown into normal healthy adults. In my head, for so many years, these characters have existed in this permanently disturbed VHS youth. I could only see them in this horrible static world that korine created for them, and because they are not "actors" and could never be found on screen again, it felt so real. But, nah. Here’s the window story. Harm was fucked up on Valium, drunk the whole film. He was really drunk that night, he threw a 30 pound glass picture frame through a bay window, hitting a grip outside in the head, requiring stitches. The crew went in, w 3 shooting days left, and wrapped the film by physically throwing him in a crew van, and telling him “film’s over”, essentially ending the film earlier than it should have. I knew a guy who had gone from NYC to Nashville to work on Gummo as a grip, and he was wearing the Gummo crew shirt one day when we were working on another tv show 15+ years ago. I asked him how it was, bc I love the film. He looked at me w a disgusted look, and said “goddamn biggest nightmare I’ve ever experienced “, and proceeded to tell me the window story. Harmony will finally admit nowadays, that crew ended the movie and threw him in a crew van. He never threw his sister through. He could have been stabbed w a tiny Swiss Army knife, bc crew hated him, but I take anything he’s always said with a grain of salt, bc he’s been telling extremely tall tales for over 25 years now. It’s just part of his persona. That is the window story though.
@ollieboy1174 жыл бұрын
that's fascinating. i'll take your word for it but who knows, maybe you're just telling a tall tale like Harmony.
@wulyf4lyf4 жыл бұрын
Ollie Boy I mean, yeah, I get it. If you wanna believe me or not, that’s cool. I’ve worked in film for 22 years now, and about 18 years ago, when I was 22, and working on a pilot for a show called Now & Again (i think that was the title, it never got picked up) I saw a grip, when we were working on the PATH train cars on location, he was wearing a yellow t shirt that had Gummo across the left breast area. I told him I loved the film and he told me how awful the experience was. Harmony has since, at least admitted that the grips through him into a car and ended shooting, but doesn’t mention why, just that they went right from tossing him into the car and drove to a strip club, so who knows., He’s still one of my favorite artists , period, and I’m lucky I got to meet him a few times on separate occasions back in 1999.

“Harmony, like Moondog, is ruthless,” McConaughey said. “He demands that the world entertain him. His appetite for destruction makes him a birther of creations. He's inconsiderate, fair-weather, a great liar, will never promise anything, is non-possessive and has no affiliations. He needs controversy. To him, a boring person is a sinner. He needs the world to feed him and he wants to eat. He wants amusement, and will seek out less and less demanding people to be around so to get it. He obviously has the discipline to create art but I'll bet the idea of discipline enrages him.”

Jacob seems to have geniune animosity towards Harmony. For example, wincing when he says "I'm suprised he didn't ask you to eat it" in reference to the 4-month old scrambled eggs and avoiding Korine to get out of a tough day of shooting. We can give credit to Harmony for being a brilliant artist, but he went through a period where he would torture himself and his cast for the sake of art. I'm sure it's probably not that dramatic, but he was an intense director to say the least.

Essential film have appreciated since released, many others in the Detroit arts did not then but so ironic how they persist to portray this life experience today, or create a skate park here and urban art yet in the end gentrify everything.. This is the real deal film, I grew up in southern Wayne County, South Detroit "Downriver".. Lots of similar experiences... Never will forget the night artist Chris Sears, his gf Tara, friends and myself rented it from iconic Thomas video and watched in Hamtramck while smoking very good herb. Altogether with the ending scene that was intense.. spent 4.5 years in Kansas/Missouri border 80's economic depression.. Showed my art at the university in Clarksville, TN later 90's and rambled around Nashville, think a mass murderer tried to hitch a ride downtown once saw his picture years later thankful I did not let him in.. lots of crazy stories like that.. once in New Orleans my friend and I met some nasty people they robbed us at a bar, never will forget them fall of '99 a few years ago I heard a radio caller from that time whom admitted to killing many around that area, we had crossed a bridge and were out in what felt like no where east i believe of New Orleans.. Took the bartenders name though Crystal something I saved it.. I think she was in with the guy, she said he was a boyfriend or husband, mullet.. cast of charachters in the bar and he had led us there from another bar in downtown New Orleans.. there with Paul Steele my building manager from Detroit Cass Corridor whom was best friends with Rodriguez from Searching for Sugarman.. Many stories.. Hope Harmony keeps them rolling..

Gummo Marx was also thrown out of the troupe, or more so wasn’t allowed to be visible, bc he was a cross dresser. He did direct a lot of their early work. The rabbit ears that bunny boy wore are in Chloes closet, with all of her vintage/designer, or outfits from films, and can actually be seen in a KZbin video where she gives an apt tour of her tiny NYC apt that she used to have in the East Village. My biggest question would have been what happened to the footage of the old guy in blackface who appeared in the trailer that Mark Romanek had originally cut, who appears a few times, but is never seen in the film. It’s odd to hear that there’s a script. I know that Harmony said that Cary Woods had read 7 pages and agreed to green light the 1.5- 2 mil dollar budget, under the condition that Harmony not make an “art” film. I have the KiDs script, but the collected screenplays is the only Harmony book I still need to complete my Harmony book collection. I’m interested in seeing what was written vs. what was shot. Glad to see these guys seem to all be doing well.

Harmony is a grifter and schizophrenic. He got beat up a lot in high school and is making up for it with wild ideas and embarrassed other people to deal with his own trauma "Much of the substance of those days in Korine's life is lost now, by design. “Listen, I feel like I lived a lot of different lives,” Korine said, after I asked a few too many questions about his past. “If I look back on things, I feel like, ‘Wow, that was a lifetime ago.’ Like, another person. But the same person. You know what I mean? It's all a simulation.” He giggled. “At some point, you're like, ‘Is this all real?’ It's like the Berenstein Bears. You know, that whole thing with the bears. The Berenstein Bears never existed.”
