I've owned this new GT model since 1st March. The front seems to get mixed reactions but when i'm riding I don't see it, but I love the quirky looks and you certainly know it's a KTM but that face isn't just pretty. Those eyes pierce through the blackest nights of Oxfordshire with enough lumins to turn darkness into daylight. It's a pity you had a wet day, sports ride mode and comfort setting make this bike the sweetest handling bike I've owned, simple to ride, fast, comfortable and safe. The GT couldn't care less what gear you're in through a bend, tip in and wind the throttle open and it will you pop out the other end. I had an S1000RR before this, the GT is much more fun, less serious about itself, much easier to ride and is a truly happy bike. Do you need 175 bhp and 144 Nm, yes, yes you do. What don't I like about the GT, erm...

We have very bad roads here in Belgium. So comfort and a good suspension is important to me. Currently doubting between the Super Duke GT and the Super Adventure S, as the latter has a longer front suspension I think it might be better for road with lots of potholes. If you're on the Super Duke GT, is the dampening sufficient for long trips? No soar back with a bit more leaning forwards then the Super Adventure S? Just wondering what your experiences are and what you would advice. I definitely love the looks of the GT better. I assume a pillion has the same comfort on both.

I've seen this bike in the same white&orange colour on my latest weekend spin. It looks much much better than the original model which already looks dated in my opinion. KTM did a great job with update for this new model. I love it and it stands out and looks like nothing else on the road, you either like it or hate it

Great review, Rode a 2017 one to Alaska and back, bit over 10,000 km. Worked nicely. The seat is hard but had less butt pain after 600 km than on a BMW R1200RT. Had some warranty issues. KTM did well by me on those. From time to time I think of selling it. Then I start the engine and those thoughts vanish.

Great review as always ! Keep them coming and look forward to them.. One thing I noticed on almost every KTM review ( no matter who reviews them )is that the motor performance (which is incredible) overshadows everything else on the bike and it takes a long term review to actually give a more accurate assessment. Hope to see one soon on this model. Thanks.

@TMF Always remember "EUBikeDudes law": The amount of crappy weather is directly proportional to the performance of the bike you are trying to ride, i.e. the more you want/can push the bike, the worse the weather will be! You REALLY must get one of the KTM dealers to let you try a PP Ergo seat, which, as I've mentioned should come standard. Ideally try a heated one. :) Hyperbole aside, it's more like 100 times/second at best for the semi-active adjustments. Also you can put heat or whatever on the quick access (up and down when you are not in a menu) buttons. Heat for winter, modes for summer. They should add a single button to cycle through the heat though - well two, one for the seat as well. Speaking of windscreens, I finally got the touring PP screen for the 790, the bike is transformed, slips through the air much more easily and all the bufferting goes over the head. Maybe do a 790 follow-up one with the screen fitted, the best PP for the bike IMO - way better value than e.g. an end can. ;)

A better seat, taller more upright riding position and shaft drive would steal so many potential GS re-buyers. As it is it seems to promise long distance potential to former sport bike owners who love the high HP figures but i imagine will fall short of GS/VStrom ability in this area.

Lovely engine, but KTM styling is an acquired taste. A shade under 17K, is pricey. While I realise bikes are relatively low volume production items, when you consider the additional complications, labour, time and amount of addition materials needed to put together a car, it does seem to be excessive. However, I would still rather have a bike, just not this one .

Right. Great review as always TMF - I appreciate your attention to detail in reviewing bikes plus I really enjoy your accent : ). I own a 1290 SA - the original 2015 big adv. bike, and i'm looking to choose between a 2019 1290 SAS or this - the 2019 1290 GT. I'm used to KTM styling and quirkiness so looks are not an issue for me, on the contrary I see them as a differentiator. Since you have tested both - I followed the SAS long term review you did a while back - I have a few questions and would appreciate your input: how do you feel they compare in terms of comfort - riding position ( ergo triangle - seat, pegs, bars ), soaking up bumps - I know the SAS is capable overall but maybe a bit long legged vs the GT that I know it used to be harsh before but I understand it has newer software for the suspension, and which one would you choose if you had to do a lot of filtering in town traffic - stability, flickabilty, mirrors height vs cars mirrors. At the end of the day if it were you money - and BMW stopped making the GS :) - which one would you choose as your daily do it all - the SAS or the GT ? Thank you in advance. cheers

@@MrRichardCass I wonder how much the "My Ride" option for the bike is then? Looks like it's around £10 for the actual phone app, then does it use your phone data? Nice to have GPS as an option, but seems a little complicated when they could have just built it into the bike screen without the need for all the fuss (A simple Sim slot would no doubt have done the trick)

I've tested this beautiful machine just a couple of days ago on a sunny island of Mallorca, Spain, and let me please share my notes with you and your fans. Supposed to be ridden on one wheel. Handles like a bicycle, incredibly agile, stupidly fast, sounds like a fuking thunder on high revs even with the stock exhaust. The bike is definitely not for a novice, unless you wanna suicide in a pure joy. Pros: THE ENGINE! This bike is just about the engine! Manageable power due to high-tech electronics. Disable traction with abs, and enjoy wheelies and rear sliding. Beautiful tft screen better than your mom’s phone, with all the possible road information you imagine. 3 level cornering lights and marvelous led headlight. Both ways quickshifter and a slipper clutch will leave a wide grin on your face. The massive V2 is a killer engine, delivering power evenly as long as you open the throttle, the reaction of the engine is instant...I mean INSTANT, pulling on any gear! Cons: quickshifter upshifts too rough, comparing to my k1300s, so I wouldn’t use it while cornering. Sometimes when thrashing the bike hell off quickshifter simply fails. Mirrors are too close to your head, meaning you will have twist your neck all the time. However, why do you need the mirrors anyway? Engine produces so much heat that it can warm up some tiny country 🇱🇻 in winter. Changing the power mode or the suspension preload is a pain in the arse. It is so deep in the menu (as well as heated grips), that will take you at least 30 seconds to switch it. The bike is extremely provocative. It doesn’t want to go slow, cos the throttle is waaaay too responsive, always kicking your ass asking for more. The faster you go, the smoother it flies. Comfort suspension I’d make softer and sport suspension harder. However, I wouldn’t exclude that semiactive suspension system intervenes and makes the suspension modes feel vague enough for your ass to see the difference. The seat has to be changed - 3 hours of non-stop riding make your ass suffer a lot. All in all this is the ultimate killer machinery for riders who prefer to be always on focus, ready to race.
@maximussmirnoff5 жыл бұрын
One more fact that is important to note. The bike brings so much confidence that in 30 minutes of riding on the mountain twisties, I was leaning the bike till my knees, cutting the corners the way I have never done in my life on any bike I have ridden. And all that on a touring stock GT tires.

Glad you noticed 2 items that have not been " improved " on this model, the seat which for a touring model is horrible for touring and another item which you really notice if you live in Arizona is the engine heat that is produced. Hope the windscreen is improved also, it does not do much for someone 6'2"....thanks for the insight.

You mentioned that you couldn't really find anything bad to say about the Super Duke (apart from looks only a mother could love and a fiddly menu that might take your eyes off the road) but how about no centre stand? Another great review...odd to see you going through Berko. The looks are still an acquired taste. Sat on a GT at KTM Hemel at the weekend. I am fairly tall, but still comfortable. Ok, so it is pricey, but if you want to get one on a PCP deal, (some people like PCP, others hate them), the APR rates charged by some KTM dealers are quite low...as in almost 50% less than the rates charged by Ducati and BMW. Alternatively, you can get them on a good HP deal. Some 2018 bikes have 0%.

Would be my second choice after a GS. Not 100% sold on the front end but could live with it. Some good deals around on them too.

Great video. Not related this video, but how many miles do you get out of the BMW GS ?

Nice review as always, I do have some small negative things about the bike. I was looking at this bike, but settled for a SAS 1290 1) if your tall like me, 187cm then chances are you you will hit the tank when shifting. So that's a definitive no go. 2) the compartiments are a little bit small for a decent smartphone. (s9 Samsung) I wonder how it performs when riding two up, comfort Wise. And the black version looks way better imo ;)

Also doubting between the GT and the SAS 1290. And indeed, I think a pillion would be better of on a SAS than the GT. The SAS also has longer fairings in the front, so might even be more comfortable. Although I like the looks of the GT better. Still have to do a test drive.

Very nice. If only I had 16k knocking around I would be tempted.

Get it on PCP,thrash the shit out of it for 3 years and give it back fucked, worked well for me the last six years or so.

@@philiproberts6947 I would love to know how you thrash this bike. It will barely be using 40% of its power 90% of the time. Maybe if you lived in Germany or somewhere with no cameras, lasers, radars, airborne Police and average speed cameras you would have a chance. Or, if you did track days every week, but who does? I think these super bikes barely break a sweat. I'm running in my Tracer GT which has nothing like the power of the KTM and I am not supposed to do more than 6000 revs for the first 1000km. Yet I'm doing 170kmh at those sort of revs.

@@Pomoz7 trips abroad, track days, Isle Of Man(no limit over the mountains) It does get beat on reasonably hard. It gets run harder than most would ride this type of bike,as like you say most people would use them on the road and have to try and stick to local laws. It's more than you would ever need on the road to be honest,I ride a Grom as a daily ride for work and have more fun on this than the KTM on slower roads. Old age saying,it's better to ride a slow bike fast instead of a fast bike slow!

Cracking review - but it’s a Ktm. It’ll break down 🤪😳👍🏻💥

...I guess I’ll have to ride another 87,400 km on my 1290sa in the hope it might break down. Maybe my problem was that I toured all the EU on it, and then went through Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine before shipping it to Sydney so I could travel around Australia. Still, I live in hope of one day having a catastrophic failure.

Your lucky then! 21 miles was all I could manage and Ktm couldn’t fix it although said they had 💩
