KTM’s getting in on the red-hot middleweight naked bike segment with its all-new 790 Duke ($10,499). A natural stepping stone between the ultra-agile, single-cylinder-powered 690 Duke and the rip-your-arms-out-of-their-sockets 1290 Super Duke R V-twin, the orange team’s new machine splits the difference between the two on paper. But what’s it like to ride to work?
--
The 790 Duke is powered by a newly developed 799cc parallel twin that pumps out 95 hp on our dyno. Engineers specifically chose this configuration for its compact packaging. And it works around town, making for a slim machine that’s especially adept and slipping in and out of traffic. But because it has some some wide rubber smears to follow, its possesses more character than other I2 configurations we’ve ridden.
Engineers however cleverly designed engine bottom-end and ignition timing to be identical as its LC8 V-twin, so the engine’s sound, character, and torque feel are similar to the 790’s big brother. This equates to a streetbike that’s a hoot to ride on the road with more than 50 pound-feet of torque from as low as 5,300 rpm all the way through redline.
So it’s a good thing this Duke comes with all of the electronic bells and whistles to help keep you in control. Traction with integrated wheelie control, ABS, an electronic quickshifter, and adjustable engine power modes are all standard and easy to manipulate via handlebar-mounted switch gear and a logical menu system. Tag along for the fun in Episode 4 of Motorcyclist’s MC Commute series. After watching be sure to leave a comment and let us know your thoughts on this video.

@Casey R. If you’ve actually owned one, not rely on trolls to keep you away from the best experience you can have on two wheels. Hands down the best street bikes on the market. I’m currently on my 3rd Duke, not one time have I needed the warranty. It’s way more reliable than a BMW, but that’s not always brought up when speaking on BMW bikes.

Before and after your ride, a brief squat down from each of four sides would help me see bits and pieces of the bike from other than a bird's eye view. In addition to the wheelies, stoppies and backing-ins, speeding is what bikes do best. If you aren't afraid of getting a ticket, by all means let us have fun vicariously through your commute at speeds that show off what the bike can do.

To keep ABS off (or in any other selected mode than "ON") you need the ABS dongle ($100-120). That keeps the TC/MSR settings saved too. I am sure purists and "ABS is for wimps" people won't agree, but the wise choice for street on a bike like this is "Supermoto Mode". Which kills the rear ABS (so you can slide it). You could kill TC : so you can wheelie You could kill MSR: which is a rev matching system to avoid a lock-up in case you downshift too aggressively (or accidentally) I keep ABS on, so no front wheel lock-ups can happen. What I always say is: locking the rear up is a technique. Locking the front up is a f*ckup, and a big one.

Expensive middleweight compared to what, exactly? The Japanese 650-700cc naked crowd all make 30% less power, the Street Triple S doesn't have quickshifter or IMU and has similar hardware and performance specs (and price), the STriple RS has a MUCH higher price to match its excellent hardware (but still doesn't have downshift QS or IMU), and the 850cc+ Japanese naked bikes are all short the quickshifter, IMU, and TFT and carrying a lot more weight with their extra power. Basically, the only bike which really goes toe to toe with the 790 Duke is the Street Triple R... but you have to pay extra to get the up-only QS, and you're trading the IMU and nimbler handling of the 790 Duke for an extra 10hp and adjustable suspension of the STriple R. The reviewers I've seen test both back to back still prefer the 790 Duke. Personally, if I were shopping that class, I would go with the Duke for the features that can't be added to the rest of the field (IMU, standard up/down QS) and add better suspension/brakes/tune myself to make up the difference between the 790 Duke and the STriple RS... or wait to see if KTM debuts a 790R for next year.

I agree 100% Infact I'm saving up for a 390 to steip upto the 790. If were ready for the 790 today, I'd just buy the thing. The 790 R may or may not come and may or may not be more expensive than doing brakes, suspension and remap yourself and may or may not use as good components as you would yourself. That is a lot to wait for. Thing is though, if you do all that, then, it costs as much as the Striple RS and then, other than the handling and IMU, it may not be so clear a decision for many people.

You actually read the comments & took the time to look at the bike again at the end. KTM kinda disappoint me when it dies while stopped. The throttle feels synthetic? Sorry, Adam. I’ve had one of these since mid November and I have to say that’s a fairly lame review. Unless I missed it, you missed that it has a slipper clutch. You also missed the entire point of the bike nicknamed by KTM as ‘the scapel’ due to its superb handling. My wife has a 690R Due and w/o a doubt, the 790 out handles it. Also my bike isn’t cold blooded. I’ve ridden it at temps below 30F with no stalling. Also it fuels well from the start. I thought I’d need to remap it before I bought it, but now think not. Yeah, I’m a bit of a fan but unless you take this bike out on a twisty country road, you haven’t ridden it.

@2fastnlight, in the spirit of giving Adam feedback, I respectfully disagree. I need wheelies in every review. I need them to get rid of the want feeling that I have for them! Backing it in is appreciated, too. 😁 I think that a thorough review would feature riding with the feature both on and off. KTM allows you to disable it for a reason. I think that they refer to it as either "supermoto" or "track" mode.

Ive had mine for a year and have ridden it in 30 degree weather and have never had it do that to me (I’ve warmed it up before hand instead of just riding at startup) Easy bike to move around and feels alot lighter than it is, the sound on the stock exhaust is really nice, though i would like to have an after market for a smoother idle purr. Change the turn signals and mirrors for a much pleasing looking bike. Bike is a blast and it definitely is a scalpel on the road.

Owned one for a while now. The stalling issue is annoying. It is somewhat intermittent. Most of the time it is OK. Definitely worse when it is colder outside. This thing is extremely lean below 3K RPMs. There is so little vibration compared to the SuperDuke or Duke 690, I'd say it doesn't have any vibration. The mirrors never shake or vibrate at any speed or RPM. The MPG the display lists is always 50+ mpg, but I've found with my commuting, I'm actually getting 45ish. The Duke 690 did the same thing. Was always optimistic by 10-15mpg. Still not bad. Very much like the bike though. Handles great, looks great, love the electronics. You can add TPMS to it too, only $150 for the parts.

I think for a review it's important to turn it off, same for traction control. Sure in normal commuting on your own bike leaving both on is often the smarter idea, but when reviewing for the masses on a 20 minute ride the viewers want to know how the bike behaves without its computers.

For you, maybe. Adam doesn't need it. He's an experienced rider, and for having a bit of fun he doesn't need the ABS getting in the way. That is the beauty of being able to turn it on or off. Personally all three of my bikes have ABS and I do prefer it myself, so I get where you are coming from.

I have one, stock standard. The throttle at low speeds is jumpy - not smooth to control. Taking corners - rear end wiggles. Front brakes are not that sharp or crabby enough. I would like it sharper. I am 6 ft. I am comfortable on it. Tank is narrow. So squeezing it with your legs gets tiring and legs get sore. The sound is great, deep and throaty. I prefer sport mode. Street a bit lazy. Wind the from the front not an issue at all. Got it up to 118 miles per hour thus far. And never stalled it because it was too cold ?!?!?!?....

I mean, that’s an odd - as yet to be explained - setup, no? I’d love to hear more about the rationale for that feature.

Could you please make a video using two of the latest generation motorcycles (like a Panigale or R1, or a naked bike), on same tires, same surface, side by side, one with full ABS system, the other without any ABS.
