I bought this bike after this review and couple others. After owning it for around 1,5 years I cannot be happier with it. It's so much fun, it is great for commuting, weekend trips and occasional track days. I was thinking what could be my next bike but I can see no competition for 790.

@@xhale111 after two seasons I sold my 790 to my friend and bought Aprilia RS660. Never had any issues with KTM and it is still running fine. My RS60 died after 1600 kilometres and it has been waiting more than 3 months now for the exhaust valves replacement because there are no spare parts available. Before, I test rode 890R for couple of days and I really regret choosing RS660 over 890R. 890R is much more refined, it has more power and better handling. @@xhale111 I think it is a matter of new bike. I was just lucky with 790 and quite unlucky with Aprilia but there are people riding RS660 without any issues. But 790 was great do it all bike. I could easily commute, do weekend trips and attend trackdays few times per year. Even do some gravel road on rare occasions :-) I compared it with my friend's MT09 which is also great package but I preferred the character of KTM.

Zero your oddometer when you next fill her to the brim - ride at your leisure/pace then refuel - take note of how many litres until brimmed again, then convert to gallons by dividing the amount of litres by 4.546.... finally you can now divide your 'new gallons' figure into your new oddometer reading, this will give a true average mpg - if this method doesn't work for you just pass me those keys!

Many thanks for the very nice video. I bought my Duke 790 in April 2018. Until now there is no Problem with this Machine. Only the workmanship and the plastic parts do not look as valuable as, for example, Yamaha. Still, this machine has character. The engine is raw and snotty - just right for a naked bike. Even the sound with the standard silencer is wonderful.

Love these long term reviews! You really do, do a fantastic job on them !! As far as riding position and a cramped position, KTM does offer 3 ergo seat replacement options. 20mm higher, 20mm lower, and stock height. All 3 are more comfortable, so They say. You are kidding me right? The KTM is miles better than the Yamaha MT09. I've owned both - paid for with my own hard earned cash - and having had the MT09 for 12 months I part ex'd it for the KTM in July this year. MT09 is a fab motor ruined by a very average chassis with terrible suspension and no front end feel whatsoever. The worst bike I've ever taken on track. Frankly scary. The KTM is perfectly balanced, has loads of front end feel and is miles better on track. On the road the whole KTM package feels perfectly balanced. Great engine, just the fright amount of power, fantastic handling and amazing electronics. The up / down quick shifter is outstanding. One thing you did miss from the review is that the chain is a pain to adjust on the KTM as it is VERY sensitive to chain tension and even dealers tend to set them too tight which can damage the output shaft seal. I've had mine replaced already and it still weeps. You have to run the chain quite slack. Despite this niggle it's the best bike I've owned for a long time and THE perfect road tool.

As usual, another great long term review from TMF - it's why I subscribe to the channel. I already have a 2009 Street Triple R, so I wouldn't buy the Duke 790 as they're too similar. However, I do have a 390 Duke, and that bike has the same snatchiness at small throttle openings. It is easily cured with a piggy-back ECU, and I installed a Coober item - this has cured the snatchy throttle. It seems that to conform to Euro 4, KTM has made the air/fuel ratio too lean, thereby causing the snatchy throttle.

Breaking into a corner is easy too, requiring only minimal additional effort. I also tested breaking when leaning in a turn already (yep, guilty of that...), and the bike remained quite stable - only a bit of straightening, rather easy to control. Had my 790 for a little over 2 months now and agree almost entirely with your review. I find I get just 120 mls from a full tank to low fuel warning and get a further 30 mls until range reads zero and I'm panicking - so 150 mls range. Estimated range is always optimistic. Comfort is fine - 8 saddle hours around twisty Welsh roads last month was more-or-less OK (and a whole lot better than my last MV). I don't like the downshifter - only seems to play nice on a completely closed throttle. Bike is fine for short-arses (if confident) - 28" inside leg here so extreme tip-toes/one-sided ball of foot. Low seating is an (expensive) option but don't feel that £132 for 20mm extra is worth it! Also - just discovered that the 790 will take a 390 tank ring (SW-Motech/Givi) using longer bolts. Ride safe....

Hello and thanks for the comprehensive video and explanation. I am a new rider in my early 60s. I am about to buy my 1st bike in the next month and I have been aiming for the Yamaha MT-09 (yes I know that it has a very aggressive torque but it also has the modes A-STANDARD-B + the traction control + the ABS so I consider that I will be able to grow into the bike even as a beginner). Also I am no longer 20, so going out to impress anyone or do wheelies. I want to more tame the beast. But now to throw a spanner into the works, over the last two days I have been looking at a lot of videos of the KTM Duke 790. My brother-in-law who has been riding all of his adult life sides more on the MT-09 for the reliability of the Japanese build and the question of looks is a matter of personal taste. I like the KTM for the dirt bike heritage in the look of the thing. In your humble opinion is there anything that you think I should consider that contrasts between these two bikes before taking the plungeÉ

You don't care for fuel gauges that respond slowly or the ones that jump around. I am afraid that is just the choices we have given the odd geometry of motorcycle fuel tanks. I am sure sluggish fuel meters are simply damped to avoid displaying changes caused by moving fuel. Envision how fuel sloshes around in the tank just lifting it up off the stand, let alone under braking or riding giant wheelies, which I'm sure you do when we aren't watching :)

Nice review. The snatchy throttle seems the norm for KTMs, or certainly the ones I have ridden. Great bikes though...

You are right I'm having mine re programmed at Dave Woods Racing, for regular communing in traffic, sorts that out completely, its not a huge deal anyway you get used to it, happens around 15 to 20 mph but just means you give some gas and use the clutch, same as with many super sports bikes

I think it funny you hate the mirrors! I think that fat look is awesome and tough looking. LOL. I am an American though and that;s just me. Awesome review on this bike and the 390 DUKE video as well. This video is very informative and perfectly usable. It's 2020 now and a bit out of date but a very informative review for me to be watching. I'm very close on deciding do I want the 390 Duke or the 690 Duke? Now you have me considering the 790. At a glance I thought that size would be getting to tall and heavy. After converting all your metrics to math I can understand the specs on a 790 look quite comfortable! Honestly now I'll have to price the 790 lol. I'm pretty sure the 690 will be my personal choice via cost specs ETC. But I wanna throw out a thank you for taking your time to make videos like these! They are SUPER helpful to a guy like me torn between 2 bikes. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME and opinions!!!

Great long term review. Wow seems to be cheaper to run than my 2014 Tiger 800. 60mpg and servicing every 9,000 miles. That's good. 👍 I'll be very interested in the 790 adventure if it comes in similar mpg and service intervals. Had a look at the insurance for myself and not bad. £400 if garaged and £800 if I leave it on the drive, 12,000 miles per year (well more like 18,000 lol 🤫), two accidents in the past 5 years and the area I live. Street Triple R or 790 Duke 🤔 I think the gear leaver being on the wrong side may take some getting use to 😂

As always... everything covered well! KTM India is going to launch this bike next year and I have my eyes on it :-) thanks

the 390 and smaller are made in India, the larger bikes are not. Please don't think that bikes made in India are substandard because of where they are made, they are substandard because the manufacturer does not use the same level of quality parts on them.
@HippoDrones6 жыл бұрын
do you not think that that bike has too much power that you can safely use on the roads? :-)
@HippoDrones6 жыл бұрын
I love going fast, I really bloomin do.... and tbh my Street Triple is "too fast" for the roads as it will do double the UK speed limit. But even on track, I don't feel a good enough rider to justify a 1000cc sportsbike (inline4) as I can barely hit top on my 765 on the long bits around Brands Hatch GP circuit. Maybe I am getting older and slower! :D
@HippoDrones6 жыл бұрын
the math makes sense dude! :-) Is my thoughts on the 790, the 1290 although is a lot more money, it is better value for money.

Y'all wrong. Not made in India.. thats only the 390 series for now. This one is made in CHINA. www.cyclenews.com/2018/04/article/ktm-cfmoto-west-meets-east/

I love your reviews. They may not be best edited or best sounding from a technical point of view, but they are easily one of the most real life on KZbin. You actually answerthe questions that really matters and that that real life customer and motorcyclist ask himself. Keep on going!

Thanks Rubuz - and sorry about my naff editing and sound quality!
@Rubuz6 жыл бұрын
Don't apologize, and please don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with your sound and editing, all I want to say is that on YT you can find really high production moto reviews. They are pleasing to watch, but they lack real life info. And I think that this is really what matters the most. So your honesty, experience and passion for bikes really make you a great reviewer.

Wish I lived near Hemel Hempstead, I’ve got 3 quotes for my 890 first service and they’re all £200, breaks my heart cause It’s just oil and filters could do it myself but of course needs to be done to keep warranty valid

I test rode this bike in hot weather (~30deg C) for 5 minutes, the engine heat is similar to Panigale 1299 (deadly for summer)

What has been the reliability with the KTM's? And the 790 (anybody can chime in). I've heard complaints (in general on the KTMs) but you can always find people to do that. Great review TMF as always. The thing I enjoy about your reviews is the everyday gal/guy, real world riding that you do which I believe most riders fall into. So, once again, nicely done!

Thanks BD - try to cover the points I'd look for in these reviews, we can't all be track day gods like the "real" journo's! ...and alas I can't comment on long term reliability of course (as it was a loaned bike)....

Lovely looking bike and dream to tick most of the boxes. I hear a lot of bad press about faults with the bikes those being fluid leaks. I'm test riding Monday and will hopefully be as impressed with it as I am with my 390 Duke. Thanks for the great video.

Great review TMF. You didn't mention pillion, but it looks like a small seat. As for the snatchy throttle, I can tell you that my Duke 390 (2017) was the same at slow speeds. The engine used to "hunt' and was quite jerky in 1st and second gear. When you are filtering at walking pace, this could be a real issue making it hard to to smoothly manoeuvre. I just used to use the clutch and raise the revs, problem solved. In another blog, somebody suggested that it is making the engines run lean that causes this issue, presumably to improve mileage and improve emissions.

Are still happy with your 390? I grew up riding dirt bikes and im wondering if i'd get boerd of the 390 too quickly. I'd would 100% LOVE to have a 790 but i think the cost is just too high for me. Should i get a new 390 or a used 650 kawi/yam/suzi naked? 5'11 155 23 y/o

Good relative value and clever engineering .. just still have doubts over the long term quality, and the finish not up to Triumph levels ...as with all KTM's has a "built to a budget" feel about it IMO . Looks wise I agree , I feel it will date rather quickly as many older KTM's have .
@stableslayers39586 жыл бұрын
A bloke talking sense. Good reply. Ktm build quality is by far below standard reliability issues known issues that Ktm don’t give a shite about
@WyreForestBiker6 жыл бұрын
I think you are talking about a different subject ! I was referring to the road bikes as opposed to the off-road range . As for ..."Triumphs I have known not made a whole ride yet without a part breaking or malfunction " .. ?? no idea where you get that from !!! . I have had 5 modern Triumphs and covered approx. 150'000 miles in total without a single issue .If you read the independent reports on bike reliability you will see Triumphs are comparable to the Japanese big four … KTM's are not !!. An example of the KTM road range with build quality issues is the 390 duke. The exhaust tubing is intentionally "dented in " at the factory in order to clear the frame where it passes behind it .. just look at one if you don't believe me.
@WyreForestBiker6 жыл бұрын
mld.. I see you are talking from a US perspective. Very different from European one in this case . Your experience of Triumph is clearly very limited, the bikes you refer to are called Triumph Tigers. I owned one for 4 years and 35000 miles , it was faultless. I didn't pick the 390 to "stack the deck " as I am not trying to win a game .. simply giving my opinions and experience with ROAD KTM's v ROAD Triumphs … which is what this video is about .The bike featured is better than the Indian built 390 , but In My Opinion still nowhere near the standard of finish of its competitor the Triumph street Triple the tester compared it to in this video. I have test ridden both machines , have you ? ... The off-road KTM's you have so much experience with have a very long and distinguished history but are IRRELIVENT to my point....

mld I parked my Super Duke R next to a 790 Duke at a dealership the other week and it's as clear as day that the 790 is built down to a budget,it's also bloody tiny! I'll stick with my Austrian KTM I think...
@philiproberts69476 жыл бұрын
mld I didn't say that did I... I said it's bloody tiny which it is compared to the SDR which itself is not a large bike. And looking at one in the dealership the other week when my SDR was in for service the low build quality was showing on there sub 1000 mile demo bike,rusty/furry bolts rusty chain and this was nearly a new bike with only summer use on it. On a plus point it sounds fantastic with the stock pipe on it.
