Should definitely be standard on the Kawasaki Z900RS. Had a bear of a time getting a straight chuck on my rims first time I checked the pressure. The spokes on the rims are on the small side. Had to order a right angle chuck for my air gauge.

Thanks so much for such a comprehensive review. I'm a 71 year old, same height as you. Currently riding a Suzuki GSX-S1000 in NZ. Looking for a lighter bike as I age and the 790 seems to tick all the boxes for what I need. Might need to fit slightly lower pegs on account of knee damage but that should be straightforward - did it on the Suzuki.

I bought this bike after this review and couple others. After owning it for around 1,5 years I cannot be happier with it. It's so much fun, it is great for commuting, weekend trips and occasional track days. I was thinking what could be my next bike but I can see no competition for 790.

@@xhale111 after two seasons I sold my 790 to my friend and bought Aprilia RS660. Never had any issues with KTM and it is still running fine. My RS60 died after 1600 kilometres and it has been waiting more than 3 months now for the exhaust valves replacement because there are no spare parts available. Before, I test rode 890R for couple of days and I really regret choosing RS660 over 890R. 890R is much more refined, it has more power and better handling. I just felt in love with the looks of Italian Supermodel... stupid :)

@@xhale111 I think it is a matter of new bike. I was just lucky with 790 and quite unlucky with Aprilia but there are people riding RS660 without any issues. But 790 was great do it all bike. I could easily commute, do weekend trips and attend trackdays few times per year. Even do some gravel road on rare occasions :-) I compared it with my friend's MT09 which is also great package but I preferred the character of KTM.

@@doylee469 he mentioned the KTM branded brakes in his first ride review. He mentions the WP suspension as well. To be fair though most regular riders probably have no idea how to correctly set preload/compression/rebound, so conventional parts work for the majority of riders. Not a KTM fan but I don't think they did anything wrong here by using what they did...I mean, would Bybre brakes really improve it that much...and you know you're not going to see legit Brembo's on these kind of bikes.

Love these long term reviews! You really do, do a fantastic job on them !! As far as riding position and a cramped position, KTM does offer 3 ergo seat replacement options. 20mm higher, 20mm lower, and stock height. All 3 are more comfortable, so They say. KTM also offer, an adjustable footpeg system as well. So finding a comfortable position is very achievable.

more accurate mpg on your longterm tests would be helpful, bikes dash 'average mpg' not general accurate., top up tank at fuel station and note mileage and litres to top up is the easiest way.
@nickfry7705
@nickfry7705 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I have a 690 which when touring shows around 79 mpg but when you really measure by filling tank then running for a few hundred miles and refilling to get an accurate picture it actually does around 65-70mpg which is good but not quite the bike computer reading. Regarding the inconsistency of the fuel level, the 690 is also pretty poor, I've run out once recently. It showed 2 bars left, I stopped for a coffee and when I restarted it, it was then flashing red and ran out just down the road, bugger. This aside, I really want a 790.

I saw a comment on another review (couldn't be biffled to find it now) where the fuelling issues down low, and heat, were a product of emissions fascism and the politics of artificially induced scarcity (of bang mix at idle) ... the recommendation was to replace the lambda with a screw and add a fuelling dongle to stop the electronics bus from barking orders at you... maybe replace the whole pipe too and run catless to prevent grilled ankles. All the emissions created would not add up to one politicians jaunt budget for a week, never mind emanations from their alimentary fundii... Can a windscreen be had to keep the warrens at bay? We pay 15k in oz, and I want another KTM before I cark it, hmmm

Zero your oddometer when you next fill her to the brim - ride at your leisure/pace then refuel - take note of how many litres until brimmed again, then convert to gallons by dividing the amount of litres by 4.546.... finally you can now divide your 'new gallons' figure into your new oddometer reading, this will give a true average mpg - if this method doesn't work for you just pass me those keys!

You don't care for fuel gauges that respond slowly or the ones that jump around. I am afraid that is just the choices we have given the odd geometry of motorcycle fuel tanks. I am sure sluggish fuel meters are simply damped to avoid displaying changes caused by moving fuel. Envision how fuel sloshes around in the tank just lifting it up off the stand, let alone under braking or riding giant wheelies, which I'm sure you do when we aren't watching :)

As usual, another great long term review from TMF - it's why I subscribe to the channel. I already have a 2009 Street Triple R, so I wouldn't buy the Duke 790 as they're too similar. However, I do have a 390 Duke, and that bike has the same snatchiness at small throttle openings. It is easily cured with a piggy-back ECU, and I installed a Coober item - this has cured the snatchy throttle. It seems that to conform to Euro 4, KTM has made the air/fuel ratio too lean, thereby causing the snatchy throttle.

The main problem with this is the Street Triple... I’m biased as I love Triumphs, but the Street Triple has impeccable fuelling, that beautiful triple, immense induction noise and looks that are much more ‘classic’. No doubt that this is great value and a brilliant bike, but the Street Triple is beautiful, whilst the looks of this are somewhat ‘challenging’. Plus KTM seem to love covering their bikes in that horrible, garish orange. The Street Triple just looks so much classier.

Best review of the 790 I've seen - really clear, super informative, well produced and best of all not laden with stupid heavy metal or banging techno. I'm in the market for a new bike and trying to decide between the MT09 and the 790 but as much as I love the KTM they are very expensive where I live (Australia) so it may the be Yammie instead.

You are kidding me right? The KTM is miles better than the Yamaha MT09. I've owned both - paid for with my own hard earned cash - and having had the MT09 for 12 months I part ex'd it for the KTM in July this year. MT09 is a fab motor ruined by a very average chassis with terrible suspension and no front end feel whatsoever. The worst bike I've ever taken on track. Frankly scary. The KTM is perfectly balanced, has loads of front end feel and is miles better on track. On the road the whole KTM package feels perfectly balanced. Great engine, just the fright amount of power, fantastic handling and amazing electronics. The up / down quick shifter is outstanding. One thing you did miss from the review is that the chain is a pain to adjust on the KTM as it is VERY sensitive to chain tension and even dealers tend to set them too tight which can damage the output shaft seal. I've had mine replaced already and it still weeps. You have to run the chain quite slack. Despite this niggle it's the best bike I've owned for a long time and THE perfect road tool.

@@mikewoodward3671 I was really considering the MT-09 since I had the FZ-07 (USA) which got totalled earlier this year. But I used to work at a KTM dealer and had a 450 EXC supermoto and loved everything with KTM and was interested in the 790 Duke but I have to wait another year to get it here. And of course theres another dealer near me that is doing a demo on the bike next week but to ride the 500cc+ bikes you have to be 25 years or older and I'm only 19.

Was on my way today to the BMW dealer to pay the deposit, but I noticed the KTM dealership on the way there 😅 I’d appreciate your opinion on this: between the BMW F900R an the 790 Duke, which one would you recommend in my situation? - I love the BMW (looks, engine, smoothness, quality), but I’m a bit scared of it’s weight at slow speeds. - I like the KTM too, but I’m not sure about its reliability and it “demanding” to be ridden aggressively. (for context) I’m a bit underweight and a quite calm and “non-sporty” rider, also not so experienced nor talented 😅 Thank you!

Good relative value and clever engineering .. just still have doubts over the long term quality, and the finish not up to Triumph levels ...as with all KTM's has a "built to a budget" feel about it IMO . Looks wise I agree , I feel it will date rather quickly as many older KTM's have .

I think you are talking about a different subject ! I was referring to the road bikes as opposed to the off-road range . As for ..."Triumphs I have known not made a whole ride yet without a part breaking or malfunction " .. ?? no idea where you get that from !!! . I have had 5 modern Triumphs and covered approx. 150'000 miles in total without a single issue .If you read the independent reports on bike reliability you will see Triumphs are comparable to the Japanese big four … KTM's are not !!. An example of the KTM road range with build quality issues is the 390 duke. The exhaust tubing is intentionally "dented in " at the factory in order to clear the frame where it passes behind it .. just look at one if you don't believe me.
@WyreForestBiker

mld.. I see you are talking from a US perspective. Very different from European one in this case . Your experience of Triumph is clearly very limited, the bikes you refer to are called Triumph Tigers. I owned one for 4 years and 35000 miles , it was faultless. I didn't pick the 390 to "stack the deck " as I am not trying to win a game .. simply giving my opinions and experience with ROAD KTM's v ROAD Triumphs … which is what this video is about .The bike featured is better than the Indian built 390 , but In My Opinion still nowhere near the standard of finish of its competitor the Triumph street Triple the tester compared it to in this video. I have test ridden both machines , have you ? ... The off-road KTM's you have so much experience with have a very long and distinguished history but are IRRELIVENT to my point....

mld I parked my Super Duke R next to a 790 Duke at a dealership the other week and it's as clear as day that the 790 is built down to a budget,it's also bloody tiny! I'll stick with my Austrian KTM I think...

mld I didn't say that did I... I said it's bloody tiny which it is compared to the SDR which itself is not a large bike. And looking at one in the dealership the other week when my SDR was in for service the low build quality was showing on there sub 1000 mile demo bike,rusty/furry bolts rusty chain and this was nearly a new bike with only summer use on it. On a plus point it sounds fantastic with the stock pipe on it.

I was meant to have had a 790 duke !!!! I test rode one and was gobsmacked that a bike of this engine size can dollop up this kind of usable performance. So I put down my deposit and signed up for a next to nothing a month pcp with Northampton KTM ... they f*#>Ed me about to the point that I cancelled the order. 😢 But then.... I stumbled across Kestrel KTM in Coventry who are amazing and will give Hemel KTM a run for their money😉 and bought a 3 year old 3000 mile 1290 gt ( for similar monthly!)which is possibly the best bike manufactured today ... So thank you Northampton KTM for being so crap as I wouldn’t have a1290 gt in the garage!!! Talking of crap dealers , don’t even get me started on Kawasaki Cornwall !!!! When stuck 300 miles from home the soonest they could fit me a tyre was 3!weeks!!😂😂😂

I think it funny you hate the mirrors! I think that fat look is awesome and tough looking. LOL. I am an American though and that;s just me. Awesome review on this bike and the 390 DUKE video as well. This video is very informative and perfectly usable. It's 2020 now and a bit out of date but a very informative review for me to be watching. I'm very close on deciding do I want the 390 Duke or the 690 Duke? Now you have me considering the 790. At a glance I thought that size would be getting to tall and heavy. After converting all your metrics to math I can understand the specs on a 790 look quite comfortable! Honestly now I'll have to price the 790 lol. I'm pretty sure the 690 will be my personal choice via cost specs ETC. But I wanna throw out a thank you for taking your time to make videos like these! They are SUPER helpful to a guy like me torn between 2 bikes. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME and opinions!!!

I like that you (try to) show and describe to us the night riding experience. Lighting is so important for safety... being able to see down the road and around curves as well as your visibility to other drivers. Most reviewers skip this important aspect and that really is critical for how confident I feel riding at night. I'm hoping you get a chance to ride the 790 Adventure soon. That's the bike I'm really interested in. Cheers from the NW USA.

I wonder if KTM will be coming out with an ADV-style version of this one, like the 1290 Super Adventure. Seems like naked bikes & ADV bikes are really popular right now. I think it would sell well if they made one. And speaking of "insectoid" lights, I like the KTM lights much more than the Triumph lights. The Triumph lights, to me, look like a Praying Mantis. Just not my think, I guess. Of course, that's all very subjective, and there really is no wrong answer.

I am facing a similar choice so let me ask this - why would someone prefer Duke 790 or 890 over SDR 1290 ? I mean not that I would question such a choice but I am genuinely interested why the middle models would be preferred and not the top Super Duke 1290, aside from price differences... I am a rather big guy, 187cm and 95 kg if that matters...

So is it a good beginner friendly bike? I'm interested with this KTM and planning to get one of these soon! Some people recommended me Japanese brands cause they're cheaper in my country. TMF interesting review as always. Don't why on these long term reviews that you keep quoting road tax at £78 for over 600cc for a year. To my knowledge it hasn't been that for a number of years. I have paid £85 not long ago and a Gov website search now says £88. Minor a point I know. Unless you get some kind of discount!!! Trade licences are different depending on the month that they are purchased that was news to me.
