In this video we are carrying out a full service on a 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport. We’ll be showing step by step how to replace all maintenance items on this vehicle, which includes an oil/filter change, air filter, canon filter and a fuel filter.
For this vehicle it is all quite simple and a chance for you to gain knowledge, experience and to do it yourself to save you money. Just as importantly it is an opportunity to get to know your way around this vehicles engine.
We will also address a couple of issues that I found during the service inspection, which will be addressed in another video.
Tools at the ready, let’s show you how it’s done.

Just done this myself! I’ll add 2 things. First, it’s easier to remove the air box completely if your screws are rusted. The added advantage of doing this is that you don’t need to grab a hoover - just tip the leaves and rubbish out. Secondly, be ultra careful with the earth strap on the fuel filter. It’s so delicate. Mine snapped at the spade connector - it’s less than 1mm thick. You can always put a new connector on but it’s a real pain when you’re doing the job. Great video though and thanks for the insight!
@greenautoservices

You’re so right. One critical thing I’ve learnt is that spending an extra 5 minutes removing an entire component can save you hours of labour in the long run. And with the Earth connector, how delicate do they want to make it? Let alone it being exposed to the elements. Sometimes I wonder what the engineers at the top are thinking when they design this stuff. Thanks for your comment and support 👍

@@greenautoservices literally it’s the most delicate thing ever. I mean sometimes things are delicate, but all they needed to do is include a new one with the fuel pump and you just change the wire when changing the pump. The funny thing is, you can’t even buy one, so you’d have to go to a garage or make one yourself. Brilliant video and took out a lot of guess work. Most of these videos are of the 2.2 and not the 2.0 so thanks for covering this engine

Great video, really helpful and have now subscribed. Will look for a video on changing the battery as the Stop/Start function stopped some time ago. Just replaced the front brake pads and have the back set and discs to change ready for MOT. Hope you've done a video on that as well. That just leaves the Timing Chain and change the brake & clutch fluid for the 72-month service. Oh and the gearbox oil.

Thank you for getting in touch especially with such positive feedback. I feel your pain, it seems a lot of dealers are going digital with their records and seems difficult to be Abel to register with them accordingly. Not sure what was wrong with service books. But at least you’ll always have a paper trail with your invoices though. Keep them safe as that is just as good evidence for servicing or maintenance records.

Good tutorial. What I will say which is important is do NOT fill replacement oil to MAX. Between half and 3/4 is sufficient, as the oil level will rise in time owing to diesel dilution as the vehicle regenerates the DPF. It is also IMPERATIVE that the oil and filter is changed Annually or every 8-10k miles, in addition to the manufacturers service schedule. Miss this at your peril, and watch your timing chain disintegrate. Finally, to reset the service indicator and oil dilution counter, you will need access to BOSCH Pathfinder >18MY For any vehicles 15 -17.5MY, Autel/Foxwell/Launch/GAP will be able to reset

Having a lift is a massive advantage undoubtedly. But these vehicles do sit quite high of the ground compared to most vehicles. You can still easily drain into a shallow oil pan (normally a deep 16 litre one will be fine) but you will need the oil filter cap tool to remove it. There are a variety of different tools you can use but just be careful to not damage the cap. It is only plastic after all.

Hi, thanks for the comment, really appreciate your view and support. As an independent garage there are checks to highlight any potential underlined issues with any vehicle but paying closer attention to diesels. Unless the customer reports a concern or the vehicle has running issues then we won’t search for issues or fix what isn’t broken. We do check oil levels prior to change to make sure there isn’t any substantial dilution present. Saying that though, with the new euro 6 engines it may be interesting to study live data. The same principle applies to AddBlue. The system had a substantial amount in and again there isn’t any issues arising that neither the customer or we have noticed. At customers request we can do a flush but we’ve never needed to do so on any vehicle. The sponge or soundproofing is manufactured into the engine cover, which wasn’t on during recording but it all got fitted back off camera. Overall, I guess so many different independent companies service vehicles differently but we are always open to suggestions to improve our services. Thanks again for your comment and on going support. Really appreciate it 👍

@greenautoservices
@greenautoservices 2 жыл бұрын
With petrol engines, the principle for replacement items such as oil/oil filter, air filter & cabin filter is the same. You’ll find however that there are 2 main differences with a petrol engine. First you have spark plugs that are a maintenance item and that a lot of the time the fuel filter will be a life time filter and be located in the fuel tank. Therefore it won’t need replacing. However there are a few petrol vehicles that will still have an in line fuel filter, which is usually located under the vehicle normally in the shape of a metal canister. Hope that helps and I’ll be sure to film future servicing on other vehicles. Thanks for the comment 👍

Honestly, off the top of my head I'm not 100% sure without it to hand. What I'd recommend to do is measure the diameter of the filter cap, count how many flutes there are (flat faces around the outside the the filter) and that will give you the info required to order the correct tool. Super common and will not be hard to find on amazon. Good luck

Hi, thanks for getting I touch. Although Liquid Moly is a very reputable brand and create and supply lots of automotive lubricants, I have never used their brand of engine oil in any vehicle let alone for a Land Rover engine. For such an engine, although the 5w-30 grade is quite generic and would be ok to use, I would highly recommend a more specific brand and grade of oil such as Comma Oil, Castrol or Shell. These engine required the best lubricant to run efficiently so for the longevity of the vehicle, it's always a good idea to spend that little bit more, especially to get an oil that is specific for diesel engines with DPF's or exhaust after treatment. Hope that helps and thanks again for your on-going support 🙂

Great work! I have to wonder about the location of the air intake to see that much debris in the air box. Never seen any car like that. My current runabout Honda CRV doesn't get any, just black dust/dirt. Still, very tempted by the Sport, great looking and performing car. Problem is I think the ones I can afford have problematic timing chains on the back of the engine and problematic steering bolts... Although any still running might have been done by now. 🙂
@greenautoservices

Thank you for your positive comment, really appreciate your support. I do see from time to time these larger air intakes and it is surprising how much debris needs to be filtered. But these larger engines require larger volumes of air to perform, thus larger intakes. Agree, the looks overall for the sports are very appealing but the higher spec models will come with potential problems. Sadly it’s just the way LandRovers seem to be at the moment at one time or another. Hope those timing chains hold up for you 👍

@@greenautoservices Never thought about that, I wonder do diesels 'consume' more air than a 'gas' motor? Maybe :-) Going to look at a 2015 2.2l Discovery Sport tomorrow. Seems like the Ford Duratorq engined ones are the most reliable of the early DSs... :-)
@greenautoservices

@@handycrowd yes diesels in general have a larger air/fuel ratio for combustion hence the larger air intakes. An analogy I like to use also is imagine the engine is a pair of lungs. The bigger the engine (lungs) the more volume of air it can use / consume. Which is also why these bigger engines have larger exhaust systems to be able to expel the increased volume of used air (exhaust smoke) as efficiently as it takes it in. Hope that makes sense 👍

Possibly stupid question, but why replace filter before oil? Or does not matter?
@greenautoservices
@greenautoservices 11 ай бұрын
Not at a stupid question at all and it's actually a question I get asked a lot, which may actually prompt a new video. In my experience I have always changed out the oil filter first and i've never had any issues because of it. 9/10 times the oil filter is higher than the sump full of oil. Removing the oil filter first allows any remaining oil to drain down into the sump before draining the oil from the sump itself. If you did it the other way around, you'd risk having old oil mix with the new. But in all honesty I don't think it makes too much of a difference. If you hear any differently then don't hesitate to drop me a message. Thanks for getting in touch and or your support.

Yes, the water pump is a job that has been confirmed by the customer so that is in the pipeline. In regards to the service light, if the service light only it illuminated, you can only use diagnostic equipment. I’m surprised Autel won’t reset it but we use Snap-On which works every time. HOWEVER, if it’s the engine oil light then you can manually reset this. 1) Ignition on (engine off), open bonnet, open drivers door, press and hold brake pedal, then press and hold accelerator pedal, hold both for 10 seconds then release pedals. Turn of / on ignition and service light should be reset. Fingers crossed! 👍

@@nicknicolaou8512 understandable. The other technical issue to take into account, LandRover, Jaguar & Volvo now use a new type of communication interface called DOIP on all of their new models. Even Snap-On had to modify the OBD cable to be able to communicate. Without it sadly you may not be able to reset the service light without taking it to a garage that has a the appropriate connection. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it’s the manufacturers way of cornering the market still.

Hi, thanks for commenting. You’re 100% right, that foam part on top of the fuel filter is there for a reason and should be transferred over if not renewed. The engine cover sits over that part and I can only imagine that’s the only bit the fuel filter may rub on as everything lose around it is fixed in place. Sadly I missed that off camera though. That did go back on at the end of the service off camera when the cover went back on. That is a good question. The honest answer is on that particular vehicle, I’m not too sure. Most the time with petrol vehicles there won’t be an external fuel filter (like diesels). how do you blead the air out of the fuel filter to ensure it will start
@greenautoservices
@greenautoservices 2 жыл бұрын
So like in the video you can cycle the ignition on and off for the fuel pump in the tank to prime the line and push any air through the system. Then when you crank the engine over the high pressure pump should push any remaining air through the system and through the return lines. If that fails though then it may need a bleed. Ideally you’ll need to disconnect the fuel return line that comes off the high pressure pump. Use a hand pump or pressure bleed to suck any remaining air out until fuel starts to come through. Then try and start the engine whilst still bleeding and it should fire when it does fire be quick to turn it off as you may spill fuel. Connect the line back up then start the engine and let it run to bleed itself out. Bleeding off the high pressure pump return line is the best location. Hope that helps 👍

When fuel comes out that will indicate the new fuel filter is at least filled with fuel then just reconnect the line. I’m quite sure cycling the ignition a few times will work. It worked for me

@@greenautoservices Hello again. What side do I suck on to siphon, please? Is it the side that had the red plug? I cant seem to sus out what side is the outlets/goes to the engine. thanks in advance

@@russellsification just going through the video to remind myself of the system. So firstly look on top on the new filter as there may be an arrow indicating the direction of flow. If there is the arrow that points out of the filter will be the flow to the engine and that one will be the port you siphon fuel from. Looking through the video though I would actually say that it’s the connector with the yellow clip that you siphon from. But you can always try one or the other as only one will draw it through from the tank the through the filter. Lastly you can look at the fuel lines. One line will go toward the engine rather than away from it and then you can decide which one to siphon through. Hope that helps

Just bought a 2019 Sport HSE with 28k miles. Leased prior to me, serviced regularly. Any suggestions prior to driving on 1000 + mile road trip?
@greenautoservices
@greenautoservices Жыл бұрын
As long as it has full service history then you should be ok to not have to do anything extensive. Prior to a long trip though, always a good idea to have your local garage to do a health check including checking all levels, lights, tyres and pressures. I would probably have the battery tested. Over 50% of breakdowns is battery failure related. Hope that helps and thanks for getting in touch.

Do you know how to fix the gearbox fault issue on a 2019 Discovery Sport SE? I can't seem to find the blue battery in the foot panel like other people have.
@greenautoservices
@greenautoservices 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately gearbox faults can be caused my multiple reasons and depending on your symptoms I’d have to rely on fault codes to point me in the right direction. In regards to the blue battery, I would have thought this would be an auxiliary battery to power all the infotainment and luxury systems inside the car. Not know a vehicle to have them in the foot well but definitely check either side of your boot compartment as they are normally tucked away behind the side panels. Hope that helps 👍

What size of oil filter cap do you need
@greenautoservices
@greenautoservices Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. It was a while since if filmed but I believe it was an 80 or 85mm diameter wrench with 14 flutes. The vehicle isn’t with me and I can’t guarantee. If you need the tool to do it then I’d either suggest to get an adjustable tool or measure the diameter of the oil filter cap and count the amount of flutes (sides) the cap has. Thanks for getting in touch

Hi Danny, thanks for getting in touch. It’s not surprising they kicked up a fuss about selling you the oil. Main dealers will always try and pin people into a corner just to get the service work. Glad you got what you needed in the end. Heads up though if you didn’t already know, for a warrantee service to be validated it does need to be undertaken by a VAT registered company as well as using original or equivalent products. Thanks again 👍

I have a disco sport 2018 diesel I have warning of water in fuel and restricted performance Any suggestions.
@greenautoservices
@greenautoservices Жыл бұрын
This could likely be that the water sensor built into the fuel filter may need replacing, which would be the first thing I’d recommend to do as a course of maintenance. It would seem potentially severe as the vehicle is going into a limp mode. If changing the fuel filter doesn’t work then you’ll need further diagnostics to find the underline issue. Hope that helps.

@@videotree3034 there’s obviously a further underline issue that the engine control module is seeing and not liking, hence the reduced power. This will require further diagnostics to at least see what fault code(s) are in the system and then go from there.
