I own one Levante 2019 (MY2019) and I have to say it's the best SUV for true driving-lovers so far, even compare to URUS. I also tried 2018/19 Macan & Cayenne and then turned to Levante straightaway without hesitation.

Powered up California indeed, it has SOUL. And it has an old, hefty style luxurious feel to it. Analog gauges and real bezels. The subtle chrome details in the interior. I live that hand crafted organic look. I’m all for digital screens but too many of the current cars are too digital and those screens aren’t good for the eyes anyway.

Owned a Maserati years ago, it was a garage queen, by that I mean it was alway waiting for a new part. Fun, yes, cool, yes, but it’s Italian and that means cheap and poorly done. Now I am too old to put up with that crap so I bought a Cayenne turbo. What a machine, and it always works perfectly

Tailgate sensor is not for sideways foot motion. It works with "in and out" motion 100% of the time. And of course you could have heated and ventilated seats and heated steering wheel.

The Volkswagen Cayenne Touareg or the FCA Levante....both expensive, both share parts with lesser vehicles.....one German, one italian, one is perceived as perfect the other no so much..both are extremely good vehicles!

I own 2017 Levante sport version loaded, and 2018 Macan S / wife/, Macan is much more fun, better build quality. I am leasing Levante and in a year ready for X5 or Cayenne S. Nice engine, decent quality ride and sports seats with perforated Rossi leather are nice, but cheap Navi, multiple annoying issues, like squeaks, poor cameras quality and many other issues make ownership less than pleasant. I was looking at the Levante and the new chevy blazer. Chose the blazer rs because of the modern tech for its price, size and aggressive look. Build quality is better as well.

Cayenne...because more stealth and I have no problem blending in w/the heard; not to mention a better dealer network. Everything you mention that is "missing", is or seems like chump change to someone like Maserati, but it also seems like their trims/packages are too convoluted (4 trims, 8 different models). I'm not saying building a Porsche is simpler; just that the Levante becomes too Italian the more you dive into the options/equipment pages; so much overlap. I realize personalization and exclusivity is the name of the game in this segment, but how much is too much? It's not like you're gonna see yourself at every stoplight in one of these things. [Why not go for a $65k Ram 1500 Limited?]

The question in the title can and should be made differently: A Maserati Levante with a Maserati or Ferrari engine over the M156 Maserati platform built and assembled by Maserati or A Porsche Cayenne built with a VW / Audi engine over VW's PL72 platform assembled and badged by Porsche

I'm a Cayenne fan personally! Think the Levante is nice but don't like the infotainment system and the switches are sourced right from the Chrysler parts bin! That being said I'd rather drive the known leader and the one that's been the bench mark from the beginning the Porsche Cayenne! Porsche there is no substitute....

Where did you 164 MPH??? it is not like the Porche... Levante GTS V6 Twin turbo can sprint to 60 in 4.0 seconds and hit a top speed of 181 mph Trofeo V8 will -- according to Maserati -- sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and keep stretching up to a 187-mph top speed.

Gas prices wouldn't help. The only difference between most current SUV/CUVs and cars is a slightly elevated ride height -- and that only makes for a negligible fuel consumption difference. It's a trend, and all trends have an end... As soon as almost everyone owns an SUV, suddenly, station wagons will be the hot new vehicle to own!

@@prisca6216 Everything you just said is subjective. Cayenne's drop in value nearly as fast as anything else in the super luxury SUV sphere. Better built is debatable. The cayenne doesn't even have a PDK, which would make it objectively better. The cayenne is also about as special as a X5; meaning, not at all. It's a ubiquitous and boring grocery-getter and is outdone by its cheaper, little brother, the Macan.

Flush all credibility down the toilet!!!! How can we really take a car review seriously when the reviewer says he "NEEDS" ambient lighting????? Clearly a personal preference that doesn't remotely add to the driver experience or makes a car better..... Heated steering and seats may be necessary in colder climates, but not in regions where it doesn't get (and stay) cold... Say what you will about Uconnect, it may not be bespoke.... but it is fast and it works across all of the FCA line!!!
