Mazda's CX-5 doesn't get a lot of complaints, but one however, was that the compact SUV was a little underpowered. What's a car company to do? Ignore it's customers or give the thing more power. Kelley Blue Book's Lyn Woodward let's you know what Mazda decided.

Own it, great car, well built, safe, lots of safety tech, rotating led lights, Bose... the list goes on and on. How Mazda did all this for $36K is a mystery. I’ll take my Range Rover any day for a road trip - but for around town, this car is quiet, powerful really well built. I road tested a BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 for $20K more... and actually like driving this car much better.

I've had my 2019 Soul Red Crystal Grand Touring Reserve for a week now and I' really enjoying it. Still getting use to the convoluted Dash but the more I learn it the more I like it. Love the ventilated seats, and the heads up display. But most of all I love, love, love the 10 speaker Bose music system. And this is my first vehicle with Apple Car play which I'm also really enjoying. So far I'm very satisfied with my purchase. And this review contributed to me choosing this vehicle. Well done KBB!

I think Mazda knows it's target audience very well. I bought a cx-5 grand touring reserve in March. I had been holding out on getting a new vehicle for a while because I liked a rental cx-5 I had, but rumors of the turbo kept me waiting for about 2 years. I know 9 other people that have bought cx-5's in the last 6 months, and something we all agree on is how much we like the smaller display. 7 inches is just the right size to give us relevant information without being distracting. it lets you keep your hands on the wheel, and eyes on the road. Now, we are all performance car people that had to grow up and get more practical vehicles, but with the cx-5 and turbo, we all got some of our fun back.

Exactly! Couldn't agree with you more, I held out for the Turbo and I love that the media features aren't distracting, Mazda stuck true to it's roots, it's more about the driving experience!

I just love the Mazda design specially this car, the interior is just enough to my taste and the power of the 186hp non turbo is just enough to my driving style and I like the sound. Hopefully the next iteration Mazda will address the second row space as it's the only thing that bothers me and most people plus the infotainment system/camera resolution of the new Mazda 3 should be implemented in the coming CX-5. That would be the ultimate competitors nightmare.🏎🏎🏎👍👍👍

Well, good thought, but Infiniti is more similar to BMW due to the fact that they both derive most of their cars from RWD platforms, which make handling similar and luxury status. Mazda’s handling is very good, but will act differently as they are FWD vehicles. Mazda is slotting themselves as a more fun to drive vehicle than a Toyota or Honda, and a less expensive Audi-type brand combined with great reliability (not counting vehicles pre-2017.)

I'm a euro guy through and through. The 2019 Mazdas interior was actually shockingly acceptable. The ONLY gripes I've had over these 4 years of ownership buying new is it's kinda slow (I daily a 450hp gti while my wife dailies the CX-5) and there's a decent amount of body roll in corners (we have the touring model), and the infotainment screen is... fine I guess but my 16' gti has touch and the Mazda does not but whatever you can get past it. Though the car does teach you (me) to drive slow, it is a decent daily driver. Nice place to sit for extended periods of time, and it looks pretty alright. I was impressed and I'm a car guy. It has great features, I think the outside will age well but the interior is a maybe. But would buy again except with the turbo engine.

@@camilogomezkeep2324 Edmund's longterm CX-5 is not loving. Edmund's longterm CX-5 review says otherwise. "....The regular CX-5's lackluster acceleration is the biggest reason why I don't look forward to driving the thing...." One of our biggest complaints has been the CX-5's lack of power. It's definitely an issue, but it shouldn't be a deal-breaker if you have some interest in this vehicle. I've gotten used to it for the most part, and it helps that I'm not an aggressive driver. If I need a quick burst of speed, I'll switch on Sport mode to make the throttle a little more responsive." The Mazda is NOT the driver's choice in the compact crossover class. That honor now belongs to the CR-V. Not only is it apparent on back-to-back test drives, but the numbers on the track all favor the CR-V. It has a faster 0-60 mph time and a shorter braking distance."

When shopping for a compact SUV 2 yrs ago I really liked the CX5's styling and driving feel the most, but the actual room, infotainment, mpgs, acceleration, braking, and handling were simply better in the more boring CRV and I've been happy with it. (and no, I don't have the oil dilution issue) It's great that Mazda finally gave the CX5 boost, but it's kinda spendy for that trim, and still doesn't address the other shortcomings for a segment where overall practicality is important to many buyers.

Very thorough review with all the necessary information. I bought a "Soul Red Crystal" GT Reserve. Love the power in addition to the great styling and quality of the CX 5. I put a tankful of $8.00/gallon 100 octane "racing gas" and Holy COW! It accelerates as fast as if I had put it in SPORT mode. And in SPORT mode I'll bet I'm getting 0-60 in 6 seconds flat. But hey, at $8.00/gallon I won't be doing that often. I added a K&N engine air filter for more air intake and when the 225 width OEM tires are shot I'll add 245/50/19 Yokohama all season tires. That's about it. Oh, yeah, I pur a "2.5 T" chrome emblem below the "SKYACTIVE" badge on the trunk lid. Mazda should have done this instead of just the "AWD" low profile badge. I want those Volvo XC 40 wimps to know what just passed them. ;o)

I had a grand touring with the 2.5L as a loaner for a week and I still prefer my 2016 RAV4 xle hybrid. It sounds ridiculous to say, I know. The interior was definitely nicer but the small windows, odd center console layout, and uncomfortable seats really put me off. The car also just feels so heavy on the road and it seemed louder in the cabin. The ride felt super plush though. It’s also so damn pretty. It was definitely leaps and bounds better than the Forester I drove though. Long story short - I guess I’m a bland car person haha.

I test drove a CX-5 Touring with the non turbo 2.5 a few months ago because I'm seriously considering looking at a CUV as my next vehicle and I liked the driving experience and it had enough features for the money at least when it comes to my needs. I'm sure the new turbo option is quick but I personally think the non turbo engine wasn't that slow either. I also test drove a Honda CR-V EX with the 1.5 T and it was fairly quick and roomy, but I'm not sure about the CVT transmission since reactions to CVT's in general are mixed. At this point, it looks like I'll be considering the Mazda for now.

The Cx-5 has 2 issues that Mazda needs to address. 1) the driver seat is not comfortable for larger people (i''m 6'3 220 pounds). 2) the gas tank is way to small and with the base engine you only get around 275 range before the gas light comes on so with the turbo it'd probably be around 250. Fix those problems and it would be perfect.

Our fuel efficiency after more than 150,000 kilometres is at just above 7 l/100 km. We are driving the AWD version in Thailand (Aircon alway on). We don’t drive faster than 130 km/h on the highway. The new CX-5 is also very quiet. You only hear the Diesel at low speeds. Putting the foot down, the Diesel revs up to 5,000 rpm and it sound quite good.

Because they also drive high end sports cars and luxury cars. For the segment, it's a very responsive engine. But it still has to be fuel efficient and affordable at this price point so it's not going to be a Porsche off the line.

The motor is strong and very useable, almost diesel like in torque characteristic and it's a pleasant all round vehicle. I think we become more moderate as we grow older - "seeming excited" is rather youth-like. Then, all of a sudden, we've seen these things before

Nice review. I'm probably going to buy or lease a CX5 Signature this coming month. We previously had a lease on a 2013 and 2016.5. My main gripe is that they should have given more attention to the terrible resolution on the 360 camera. If the reserve can have a decent back up camera (non 360) I do not understand the top trim lacking in this area. They will not fix it I am guessing as the tech in the Mazda 3 I saw in showroom looks to be what the Cx5 will have in maybe 2021 per the sales person. I also wish that there were not so many complaints about the paints being thin and easily chipped.I did not experience that in prior years, so only time will tell.

Just rented an AWD for a road trip. Love the car. things to improve: more cargo space. It was one of the biggest limitations I had with the car. Had a full car for a Tahoe trip and the storage got limited really fast. Add maybe 2 more inches of leg room in the rear the volume knob near the center arm rest is quite tucked in for people with longer arms and is kind of hard to adjust. I feel like Salt bae when trying to adjust it. The rear backup camera quality is terrible. It's like 240p Move the rear charging ports and heated seats from the rear arm rest to the center console knee area. Cannot be accessed when 3 passengers in back. Put the blind spot orange lights on the inside of the cabin rather than on the mirrors. Change the keyless entry from the button on the door handle to unlocking by placing the hand behind the handle Redesign the key fob (it looks like Nissan's which isn't a good thing) and consider adding remote start. Offer a button to turn off infotainment screen to reduce eye strain at night. Lastly, ADD A BIGGER GAS TANK!! I get like 320 mile range which is not good. My Accord gets like 480. And the notification for low fuel turns on with only like 25 miles left which is really low. That said, awesome mpg even with AWD. Averaged like 29mpg while driving 80mph Sufficient power with the 186hp. Nothing mind-blowing but gets the job done. Really sleek vehicle Love the seatbelt notification of the backseats Driving Dynamics are nice for a CUV

Jim MacMurdo I have a previous generation cx5 grand touring and while most of my driving is less than 10 miles just going around town, the few highway trips I've done including a 2 hour journey to Ohio with 3 freinds was pleasent. The car is decently quiet, the adaptive cruise control has never failed to see a car and even going 80 mph the car felt stable and had enough power to pass slower drivers. I will admit the 26 mpg I got was probably due to the 6 speed and less than I would have liked but what can you do 🤷‍♂️

@@mbenton6 Interesting. That was virtually the same advertising claim that Chevrolet used back in the late '50s and early '60s regarding Powerglide. They showed how superior Powerglide was to the Ford and Chrysler 3-speed automatics as, in their words, "with Powerglide, you only shift once!". By the way, the worst gear-searching transmission I ever experienced was the early Aisin 6-speed longitudinal unit in the Lexus LS430.

@kevinandrew_
@kevinandrew_ 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely smaller, but not unusable by any means. I think we have gotten too used to comparing things size wise. In reality, this fits 4 adults just fine, albeit a tad tighter. If you need every inch of space, then CRV, Rav4, Forester, etc make more sense. If you're moving from a sedan, or are a smaller family, this is more than enough. If you like the way this drives (and it drives great), I don't think the size should be too much of a handicap, unless you're a family of 5, or are constantly carrying 6 footers front and back. At the end of the day it comes down to preference of driving vs space, and your specific needs.

The CX-5 is a quiet, refined drive. That being said the front seat bottoms don’t offer any thigh support, the arm rest is too far back, the dead pedal is too far forward and the steering wheel doesn’t pull out far enough. In addition the A pillar is too thick and it’s hard to see around. If you are 6ft tall or above, don’t buy this car. The driving position is flawed.

@BobBrown.
@BobBrown. 4 жыл бұрын
I certainly will. When you drive BMW or Audi or Mercedes. It feels better. The design is well thought out there are no annoying bits. The seats comfortably support your back. The steering is precise crisp and the suspension absorbs bumps without a fuss it keeps the car steady at high speeds eg 160Kmph upwards. The car feels secure it grips to the road and you don’t feel it sway even if you chuck it into corners. It feels solid and always planted to the road. The engine is quiet yet it delivers a good amount of power. It doesn’t whine when I floor it. It just goes with ease. The transmission is very responsive, it downshifts the instant to put your foot down. It’s extremely difficult to explain, you need to experience it. When you have a chance try driving one. You will know its better. People aren’t stupid they buy these cars for a reason. You could argue that people buy it for the luxurious interior and the brand and of the infinite colours of the ambient lighting. I can’t speak for other people, but for me I buy them for the driving experience. The interiors comes second.

tayanacf 2018 Grand Touring Premium. That was the top trim in 2018. I don’t know whether you can get ADD on GTP in 2019. The ADD shows your speed, the speed cruise control is set (also indicates whether that is on), the speed limit, lane sensoring, adaptive cruise control distance, and navigation directions. It’s possible I’m forgetting something. I love the ADD and am surprised by how much info is available at a glance. I feel like I never take my eyes off the road because I have it. I control the radio with the steering wheel, both volume and song skipping. I can press a button for audio commands as well though I honestly never use that. Cruise control settings also on wheel. For anything you can’t do with steering wheel, the knob in the center console works very well. I prefer that over touch screen (even when stopped) except for typing in addresses into the Navi.

That bulky ancient Ford 6 speed needs to go & it holds that Turbo engine back. Add in the Mazda 3 infotainment system. How about a full time touch infotainment system. Move the 2nd row heated seat controls to the doors & the USB ports to the back of the center console where they belong. Rear adjustable vents please. A bit of a wheelbase stretch to bump up the cargo & 2nd row legroom numbers as well.

@ConnecticutDashcam 5 жыл бұрын
You have many incorrect assumptions but no worries. The 6 speed is not a ford transmission it is Mazda. They’re not interested in adding more gears because it would slow the car down. The massive amounts of torque allow acceleration without having to change gears. Non-touch infotainment is the direction not only for convenience sake but safety as well. There’s a reason BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and more now are reverting to the controller. USB controls are in the armrest very intelligently; to avoid a tangled mess of cords being tangled and stepped on on the floor. Rear air vents are adjustable as well
