I worked at bridgestone as a wheel alignment technician for awhile and Mazda vehicles always stood out to me as being well put together, built with precision and quality parts. So many small things about them stood out above the rest and I would drive every kind of car daily. The dashboard materials would never fade, the plastics always came on and off without breaking or being loose, the steering componets under body would all come on and off without any trouble, parts would never be binded up with rust. And since seeing that over time I've trusted Mazdas ever since. Their attention to detail and effort they put into things the customer will never even notice is a tribute to their integrity.

"They focused on the fundamentals first." That perfectly sums up Mazda's approach to improving their cars. They don't try to dazzle you with fancy tricks that will hide the driving flaws. They also follow the KISS principle with their interior and infotainment - simple yet elegant. Love my Mazda 3 and would love to add a Mazda CX5 to the stable. Thanks for the detailed and honest review.

I don't want to be disrespectful either, but its not hard to sell this SUV. What seperates The CX-5 from its competitors is its class. Everything about the CX-5 except for its infotainment oozes class. No competitor in its price range uses such high quality materials inside the cabin. From the napa leather that wraps all the cushioning inside the cabin, to the sleek chrome trim, to the subtle wood accents and very solid mechanical switches, the Mazda CX-5 looks and feel in a league of its own. The driving experience is the smoothest and most responsive of any competing SUV, and its extremely silent while doing so. Competitors may have better infotainment systems, but Mazda's priority is the driving experience over all else. You want a car that you want to drive, that you want to steal glaces at as you walk away from it, that looks and feels several more thousands of dollars than what it is worth. That is what the Mazda CX-5 offers compared to its competition. Class.

I rEfuSe tO sWiTcH tO a CvT. Jesus, stfu already with that shit already man. You do realize companies have different trims that are not CVT's. You support Mazda because they don't use CVTs? To be honest, that's a really poor reason to support them. What about their infotainment and interior? Looks? Engineering? Gotta love Bandwagon comments.
@TheNacropolice
@TheNacropolice 5 жыл бұрын
@@tr0llbuster292 Well, I mean, for people who enjoy driving a CVT is not ideal. I am not going to hate on a CVT, my mom has a CR-V with a CVT and it drives great, but, don't expect it to be sporty or rev nicely or anything. Plus, CVTs do have some reliability issues with their chains, but that might be mostly a Nissan thing. Will Mazda go the CVT route? Who knows, odds are they might if fuel standards keep rising, but I suspect that could probably license the 8 speed auto from Toyota instead. Biggest reason they probably won't is that their line up is not that big. They have the Mazda3, 6, CX-5 and CX-9 (I know the CX-3 is a thing, but It is like a worse version of the Mazda3), there isn't really a model to just throw a CVT tranny in for fuel points (and also mazda is all about driving).
@tr0llbuster292
@tr0llbuster292 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheNacropolice It's more like people make them out to be worse than they are. Besides, people hate on CVT's because one company has issues with and suddenly they're all like that? I call bullshit because you'll see people say the opposite. And for the record, I have one, but it's not a Nissan. I get simulated gears are lame, but for just daily driving, it's not bad. It goes when you want it too and it doesn't lag like the Ford Focus with a DCT. And people fail to understand companies are using them for ONE reason only... to save fuel economy.

I like driving sporty cars and recently drove both a turbo charged and regularly aspirated model of the CX -5. I found that the non-turbo was more pleasing to drive and had all the power I wanted. It felt more compliant, more controlled, quieter, and smooth. The turbo was loud, aggressive, and was not as pleasant to drive. I would suggest that anyone interested interested in this suv try both versions before making up your decision. I went in thinking that the turbo was the version I would end up liking the best, but that was not the case. I also drove the Mazda3 and was very impressed. I am realizing that a car can be wonderful to drive without a excessive amounts of power and acceleration. These Mazdas will make you choose between bling, big screens and gizmos and a quality driving experience. I'm going to buy a Mazda.

The worst aspect of so many modern vehicles is the overuse of electronics. Every vehicle I've driven with an electronic throttle feels really artificial and nonlinear in response. They generally calibrate the throttle to feel jumpy off the line to give the impression of more power than is actually available. Cable-operated throttles felt so much more natural and generally had more resistance when depressed, which I prefer. Now they're piping in fake engine and exhaust notes into the cabin. If you know it's fake noise, it's not going to impress you unless you're a teenager. The over-reliance of the touch screen interface is also a huge pet peeve of mine. If it doesn't relate to using the stereo or navigation, it would probably be more functional with a physical button. Simpler = more user-friendly = better for everyone.
@802Garage
@802Garage 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Love myself some cable throttle. I've heard the BRZ is pretty good as standard in terms of throttle by wire. They can be really good with aftermarket tuning, but like you said it's a pain how most of them feel from factory. I also can't stand climate controls that are so electronic and all over the place. Again Subaru and some other brands get it right with the simple 3 knob interface.

@@802Garage I'm fine with automatic climate control as long as A) there are physical buttons/knobs and it's not operated thru a touchscreen, and B) I can manually control when I want the AC on or not. Some systems operate the AC at all times in auto mode and I hate that. Saps power and sucks gas.
@palebeachbum
@palebeachbum 5 жыл бұрын
@Peder Hansen I think they say to run your AC at least once a month. Using it 100% of the time, however, will lead to wearing out the compressor prematurely. Its a mechanical part that will fail from use over time like any other mechanical car part.

All electronics work as well as day 1 of owning it. I do experience occasional bluetooth problems, like music from spotify won’t play on the car speakers even though it’s connected and playing on my iphone. Heads up display is very useful and works really well. I do all maintenance work by myself like regular oil changes and other things. I have never noticed any engine or transmission problems which I do expect given that it’s only at 30k miles. I do take care of this car so the ivory nappa leather seats still looks pristine. I do hate the black gloss accents, they show scratches and looks ugly after some time.

@@kendallalston504 yes, my primary two was Mazda and the Toyota. Appearances aside, the interior build quality on the Mazda was league's better, plus for the same money I was able to get leather, Bose, android auto, power lift gate and some other minor toys. Both dealership experiences were very pleasant. Both put their best prices forward and gave me extremely favorable values on trade. Very little aggravation or haggling as the pricing was extremely fair. The rav was 31k sticker and the Mazda was 30900. Both were reduced to 27400 and 27250 respectively. Ultimately the value, driving experience and quality of the Mazda won me over. The Toyota was bigger in every way and got better mileage, however it was still bland to drive and the interior qualities were mediocre. That's why the scenery looks familiar in your videos. I live in McHenry a few miles from Anderson Mazda. I almost bought a Mazda CX-5 from them recently but went with a Kia Niro since I drive alot. The Niro obviously has much better gas mileage being a hybrid but the seat comfort, driving position and ergonomics were also much better for me in the Niro. The Mazda CX-5 had much better steering feel, handling feel (cornered flatter) while still having better ride quality over bumps and being quieter but the Niro was good enough overall to win out for me. It was a hard decision though since I've only owned Mazdas and currently owned a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 with 210,000 miles which still runs great but has the common rust issue around the rear wheel arches.

Infotainment is a minor gripe, and my dealer does everything possible to insure customer satisfaction. XC-40, BMW X3... drive like dogs compared to this car. Faster, quieter, better driving than anything else in it’s class.

With regard to the HUD. I like it, gives my wife a migraine. We share this car so turning it off every time was not an option. A workaround is to set the brightness to manual, the lowest setting and the position way low, out of view at my wife’s seating position. The seat memory remembers these settings, effectively turning it off when the correct seat memory is chosen.

I also like the HUD and I hardly ever look down at the driver’s display because I don’t need to! I had not realized that the seat setting can remember the driver’s preference for this feature. It's so obvious from the slow mo shots that the AWD system is FWD bias. The rear wheels barely move. I love your cinematography, but I do have 1 small piece of criticism for your intro scenes. I think it would be more inline with the slight motion of each scene if you stayed on each shot for longer. Sometimes it feels rushed.

@@kmier2000 all due respect, but I think maybe you dived right into something without FULLY knowing what you're doing; A LOT of dealerships tried playing pushy BULLSHIT GAMES with me when I first started looking for a car and one literally tried getting me to sign off on a car I was personally NOT interested in at one point (A Kia dealer in Manchester (West county), MO). You walk into the dealers WITHOUT an idea of what to do and make it known to the dealers with your actions/words, some dealerships WILL take you for a ride and PUSH you hard to the point where you'd have absolutely NO clue what to do... If you call and then walk in, asking for a very specific car you saw on Edmunds or CarGurus... x make/model... x year... x features... x amount of miles... x amount of $$$, it'll probably be VERY known you're VERY specific in your interests and you will NOT care one bit if the dealer will try pushing ANYTHING ELSE on you and they will probably not even ATTEMPT to play the pushy bullshit games... with noteworthy exception to financing (i.e. I mention my intent to put around 40% down on a car worth around late teens after taxes, they "strongly" suggest a knowingly significantly more complex financial setup "to get you in a new car today"... idek the full details to that anymore, but again, beware the bullshit games. DON'T volunteer as tribute)... which looks to be your issue. I test drove cars AND listened to and argued with every kinda dealer out there... good... clueless... pushy... shady... and just downright unprofessional... for easily 6 months before signing off on something nice, affordable and very low milage (I was shopping for very lightly used; similar to brand new but easily 33% off original MSRP (coincidentally, a relatively new Soul red Mazda 6 w. 11k miles). Just DON'T let the more miserable pricks in these places play you like the fool they think you are. Research EVERYTHING about the car(s) (consumer reports & potential cons & issues) and your financial options. And DON'T take anything the salespeople say to you seriously.

@@schwenda3727 lol. Yeah. I'm sure I'm in the minority. I mean doesn't everyone have 6 months to buy a car? I need a car. I buy it. I'm not even asking for what they can deliver in 6 weeks, I need it today and I want to close the deal in a couple of hours. I'm a freak, I know :) btw. The whole buying thing wasn't horrible if you exclude one dude that was there for a week and knew absolutely nothing plus lied habitually... It was what they did AFTER they sold us the car. I mean how many times do you need to try to put a clear bra on before there's no bubbles on it? How can you not figure out if you have wheels in stock or not? Why do I need to leave my child with a babysitter and lose time at work to deal with your incompetence? Etc etc.

Your comment about the chirp syncs with my experience. In some ways, the quieter the car, the noisier. The issue with the seat heaters is one where you can’t satisfy everyone all the time, but I think they made the right decision. If one day you’re driving with a passenger who left them on while you turned yours off, but the next day you’re driving alone, you want the passengers turned off, too, but you won’t have the reminder of your seat getting warmer. Or even if yours are on as you want, you still need to remember to turn off the passenger side. Perhaps where you are, the days are consistently cold. But where I am, we can have a high of 27 one day and 40 the next. So who’s to say I want them to stay on automatically? Besides, I have a garage, and while it’s not heated, I still almost never need the seat heaters on when I leave the house, but I will after leaving the car parked at the mall for a couple of hours. Plus, even when I want the heaters on, if I’m driving more than 15-20 minutes, I’ll turn them off and let the climate control system keep me warm. The bottom line for me is that I very rarely want the seat heaters to go on after having left them on for my previous trip, and vice versa.

glad you mentioned the dealers. i used to go to a mazda dealer when i owned a mazda, and when i bought a toyota i took my car to that toyota dealer for servicing. everything was more expensive though i didn't think anything of it at first because it was a much more expensive car, but soon enough i realized they were double-buffing all of the prices, both in charging more for work and doing extra work that didn't need doing. i switched back to my original mazda dealership, and despite them ordering in toyota parts for my car, my maintenance costs have dropped to a little more than half, and they're nicer about it all too.

You could choose to put premium gas in it, which would bump the HP to 250 and that would remedy liveliness of the tack past 4000rpm 2. If the interior of the new 2019 3 is the direction Mazda is taking, then 2020 CX5 refresh is going to kill it (this would address most of the interior cons, infotainment, electronics etc.)
