Agree user1138, he touches on all the good along with the bad. Only thing is I use my 2016 MX-5 Club in 4 season Illinois including when the snow flies the winter tires go on & its great in the snow too. 4 years with it now & its been very solid. The soft top gets care with a soft bristle brush & the 303 cleaner every car wash. I do not park under trees so never had any problem with the top drain filters. Its an awesome car that has been thru some of the worst snow / ice storms along with torrential downpours.

I ran across your review of this car a couple of weeks ago, and quite frankly I was a little "shocked." When the ND first came out it seems I remember everyone was going with either MCS or Ohlins shocks. I really didn't want to spend that much money prepping for a street class, so I dismissed the Miata. After seeing you were on Konis, I really got interested as I was in the market for a new car. I bought a 2021 MX-5. I probably would have not done this if it hadn't been for your review. Mazda owes you a commission.

I joined SCCA a couple years ago even though I don;t even own a performance car. I just want to support a 'working class' racing organization. That said, I am planning to finally purchase a MX-5 within the next year, before production of the ND2 ends. I'm looking forward to getting into autocross and possible competing in the street category. I love the subtle mods you've done to make the car more competitive and drive a little better on the street. I will definitely refer back to your build for ideas when the time comes. Subscribed!

I have also used the Koni adjustables on my Miatas. I used them on my '94, which I had for 11years. I set the fronts all the way hard and the backs one notch off all the way hard, and that worked for me, and that was for the street! Now that I'm 11years older, and now have a "new" '97 to play around with, I may have to experiment with some softer settings...

A really awesome review of this great little sports car. I have a 2021 RF Club with Brembo, BBS, Recaro package and love it! I had a 2018 RF, BBS Package car for a very short period of time and the HP difference and ability to pull constantly to red-line is a nice upgrade between ND1 and ND2. The ND1 is still a very fun car to drive; I bought it because used with very low miles it was over $10K less in price, so I turbo charged it! Unfortunately, it burned up in my garage, along with my home, on June 30th. I only had two 40 miles drives, to gather data for my tune, which never got to be complete. The turbo had it pulling like a freight train, from 55 - 100 MPH was a matter of seconds. Autocross looks like so much fun, especially for this car; who knows I just might give it a try one of these days! Thanks for your insight into the world of SCCA Autocross! I rode a Honda CBR100-RR prior to getting my RF, but there is really no place for such power on our crowded roads in Northern Nevada any longer. While there are some other cars with much more HP and speed, there is no place to utilize that safely any longer, thus my choice for the MX-5 RF Club.

@3ducs
@3ducs 2 жыл бұрын
@@alangross2277 Actually the cause has been determined. There was rain a few days before the event, humidity was high, daytime temperatures around or more than 100, lows in the 90s. The cattle were in feed lots, crowded together, no break from the sun. Normally cattle in hot weather get a break from daytime heat at night so they can shed their body heat, with humid air and no breezes the heat kept building which overstressed the animals. About 2,000 cattle died. Every year in America about 30 million cattle go to slaughter, a few millions die of other causes. 2,000 cattle is not a big thing in the scheme of things. This will have no effect on the beef supply.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on the BBS/Brembo/Recaro package on the Club. It’s tempting, but it seems like the consensus is that, practically speaking, it doesn’t add much.
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 3 жыл бұрын
True, from a autocross perspective that package adds very little...and in some ways is worse (slightly heavier brakes/seats). I originally set out to get just a base Club, however at the time there were none in Soul Red within 500 miles of me, yet this car was essentially down the street at my local dealer, so that dictated my choice. That all being said, the seats are absolutely fantastic, and the BBS wheels and Brembo calipers look a lot better than the base package IMO.

Thanks David! It's been a busy month or so since Nationals so I haven't had time for an update video, but it will be out very soon! You are asking the wrong guy about "other SCCA Street class cars I like"...I have perpetual Car-A.D.D., so the list is pretty long. I may switch things up in 2022 and sort of "retire" the Miata from active autocross duty (don't worry, it's not going anywhere), but I'm not sure what would be next. As you may have seen from some of my other videos, I'm a big VW/Audi fan, so it might be something from one of those brands...

Great review! I just picked up a 30th A.E. that I'm preparing for either CS or STR. I’ve always wanted to see car reviews from the prospective of a racer/autocrosser. Some cars are just better for certain racing classes, due to how they react to the allowable modifications in that class. I hope to see some more reviews! Maybe consider shooting with the top guys in some Street/Street Touring classes and cover why the car is well suited for that class and how it performs as a street car, along with some autox setup tips.

But are seeking the ultimate canyon carver.....what setup would you recommend for a 2019. Just looking for maximum pleasure. Or would you say....just buy a 2014 cayman S.....? Or, just duplicate your car because further mods will yield so little. With your competitive driving background (congratulations by the way!! Thats not easy!) You are the perfect straight shooting individual to ask...... Could be another vedio on the "ultimate canyon carver"...... Thanks just jim

Honestly, these cars are great out of the box, and the upgrades I have done definitely enhance it a lot. In fact the handling limits are so high I'm not sure I'd want more speed on a back road. That being said, in competition (or track days) the suspension is certainly soft, even with the Koni shocks. I think the only upgrades I would do beyond what I have for just a fun street car would be some aftermarket sport springs (Eibach maybe), a larger rear sway bar (to go with the big front bar I have), and then maybe a flash tune for the engine for a little more grunt...although it already has a lot of grunt ;)

I have an ND1 and I'll say the electric fuel gauge is pretty wildly inaccurate. I believe it's actually a 12 (11.9) gallon tank, not 11. And most times I fill up when the gauge is on E, but it only fills up about 10 gallons....meaning there's actually almost two gallons left in the tank. I've made it over 400 miles on a few tanks (highway driving) and often ignore the E and drive another 50 or so miles before I become uneasy about how much gas is actually left. Most of the time I'll drive it about 350 miles before filling up, even though I hit "empty" before 300.
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is normal on all Skyactiv Mazda engines, the direct injection system doesn't want the fuel level going too low so it will show zero miles to go yet there is around 1.5-2 gallons still in the tank.

None of my vehicles are scca ready at this time so I'm hesitant to join. By the way I did a low speed autocross the first generation mx5 in a manufacturers event at Cal Expo. I didn't do as well because I was instructed not to go into first gear through the turns. Ordinarily I would double clutch slow turns in my RX7 for greater acceleration out of the turn. Thanks for the great video and your well thought out setup had minimal tire squeal through the turns at crows landing. Also did you autocross 2002 in the past?

Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video! No, you do not have to be an SCCA member to spectate an event. However that being said, in these unprecedented times I'm not sure when we will have an event again, and spectators may not be allowed based on social distancing guidelines...at least for the time being.

@@fastpaxSCR I do understand the COVID-19 cautions. I hope SCCA will once again be able to freely gather without the worry of COVID-19. I look forward to your future videos. By the way I do enjoy your current list of KZbin videos. Have a great evening.

This was amazing! ... I am usually quite picky with what I subscribe to but this is more than worth it. The perspective of the SCCA classes was very welcome .... I have a question though... Rather unrelated for the most part. I noticed that you were also the previous owner of a camaro (presumably a turbo 4). Could you compare that car to this one(I know sounds a little sacrilegious as a sentence to say ) ....I'm looking specifically for a comparison of your autocross experience in the two and also how the latter compares to a stock brz.

Yes, I had a 2.0T Camaro prior to the Miata, and I really liked it as an autocross car...it was so quick it was actually faster than an SS Camaro. However I didn't like it as much on the street. It was quick, but hard to see out of and the noises it made did not match the looks ;) The Miata is just better in all regards, way more fun to drive, and even quicker on an autocross course. I have a lot of seat time in BRZ's and FR-S's, they are also fantastic autocross cars with great steering response, however unless you are constantly revving the crap out of them they feel utterly gutless. I would have bought one if they had another 50+ HP...

@@fastpaxSCR I can't thank you enough for a detailed reply like that. It was very enlightening. I've been wanting to get my feet wet in the autocross waters myself and the v6 1LE on paper looks like a pretty good car. Its just that there isn't a lot of info about it online. Thanks again for your reply. I found it very helpful

If you’re able to disclose which bump stops did you happen to use and which bar setting do you prefer? I am also on the karcepts front bar but I’m new into CS and looking at getting a good starting point. I saw some bump stops from goodwin but I’m still doing research. Thanks in advance.

I'm confused. I am a proud owner of a 2019 MX-5 Club RF with Brembo BBS package and i cannot for the life of me figure out how this steering wheel telescopes as you have mentioned several times in your video as being an added new feature to this release. Can you tell this clearly not too mechanically savvy person (me) how to make my steering wheel telescope? ;) all i can get mine to do is move up and down vertically when I release the lever under the column. Thanks do much for your review and time!!!!

such a beautiful color and the perfect trim! Besides the Front Sway bar are there any other mods you'd suggest on the club to get rid of body roll? I'm not concerned about auto-x requirements just want to get rid of the roll for mountain/back road driving.

The easiest way to reduce the body roll if you aren't concerned with SCCA autocross classing would be front and rear aftermarket sway bars and stiffer springs. Lots of options out there depending on your budget, hit up Sam at www.stranoparts.com/ and he can set you up!

What wheels/tires did you change into for the autocross and which Koni shocks (I assume only in the back) did you get. I have the GT with GT-S package so stock brakes. How do you think the breaks will hold up in an autocross?
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 4 жыл бұрын
The stock brakes on any ND are totally sufficient for autocross. My autocross wheels/tires are 17x7 Enkei PF01 with 225/45-17 Bridgestone RE71R tires. My street wheels are the stock BBS wheels with 205/40-17 RE71Rs, and those also double as my rain set if necessary. I have simple off the shelf Koni Sport shocks all they way around, I typically run the fronts full stiff and the rears I adjust according to surface/feel.

@jackzhang6705 3 жыл бұрын
Great video! You gave us a lot of insights there. Do you also use 225/45R17 on the Enkei for autocross? What’s your opinion on going wider than that?
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 225/45-17 is the go-to size for the ND2. Going wider on the 7" wheel can work, but I doubt it would be any quicker because it's just too much of a pinch. Now, if you went to a different class...say STR, then yes wider is better. Most STR classed Miatas use 245 size tires on 9" wheels.

How come no SCCA/NASA approved roll bar? OEM style bar, especially with driver with helmet does not meet "broom stick" rule?
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, the answer is a roll bar is not needed for SCCA autocross unless you get into Prepared and Modified classes. Doing track events is a completely different story however, some groups don't require one but I'd never take my car on a big track without a roll bar.

You're running Koni shocks, non height adjustable, with stock springs, yet you car appears to be substantially lower than with the Bilstein shocks. Cars sit on their springs...so how come yours is lower with the Koni's?
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR 2 жыл бұрын
The Konis have much less gas pressure than the factory Bilstein's. Because the stock spring rates are so soft the high pressure of the Bilstein's sort of "pushes" them up, whereas the Konis allow the springs to compress more at static.

I run the factory spec oil and always service it at the Mazda dealer. The car gets driven very little so I don't change the oil based on miles but rather time...I typically change it every 4-6 months no matter how many miles.

Awesome video. Can you get away with not adding a rollbar for SCCA?
@fastpaxSCR
@fastpaxSCR Жыл бұрын
For SCCA Solo autocrossing a roll bar is not required unless you are in a very hevily modified class (as in gutted/wings/race slicks/etc). For SCCA Road Racing a full cage is required, and in SCCA Time Trials/Track Night in America a roll bar is highly recommended but not required. That all being said, I personally would never drive this car on a race track without a roll bar, and since it would add unnecessary weight for Solo I just choose not to track my car ;)
