I own exactly the car he tested. The Eternal Blue w/tan leather interior looks and feels great, and the car drives like a dream. My first trip was to Costco and I easily got three bags of groceries in the trunk. Not exactly an SUV, but practical enough to be your daily driver. Puts a smile on my face every time I look at it or drive it. I owned a 1993 NA which I sold when I moved from New England to Arizona because the a/c couldn't handle desert heat. I loved the car and it reminded me of a Lotus Elan, but it had no power. Many years later, the ND does everything so much better while preserving the best parts of the original design. If your lifestyle allows you one great toy which doesn't even cost much money, this is it.

I drove my Miata on a road trip from St Paul MN to Cody WY in 2015. The first year the speed limit was set at 80 mph. It took me 4 1/2 hrs to cross SD. No caffeine required. I drove thru the Badlands, it was 98 F in the interior. I had the top down and the AC set to the floor. It was like sitting in a cold tub of water with just my head sticking up, beautiful. Everybody else in the open was prostrate. One morning I left Rapid City to drive at 10 mph all day thru the back roads of the Black Hills. Reliving the movie 'stage coach' on the very roads it happened. It was 67 F when I started so I turned on the seat warmer. Later the temp rose to 82 F and I thought, 'my God it's hot'. Then I realized the seat warmer was still on. Miata fun, lol.

I don't know why people insist on comparing these 2 cars...talk about comparing apples and bowling balls. The MX-5 and the Boxter aren't even close to being in the same class. The BRZ/86 twins are the only real competitors to the Miata. The Boxter handles FAR better than the Miata and has +114 hp and +94 lb-ft of torque! The Miata is an amazing car in its own right and certainly is the best roadster of its kind. In any case, there's no need to make these ridiculous comparisons.

Agreed! I don't want this to be the last manual sports car I get to buy. The only way we keep them coming is if people buy them new. I get the attraction of buying cars like the FR-S and BRZ used and throwing the rest of the money to nice upgrades, but that money never makes it back to the manufacturer, and if the accountants don't see it in their books, we'll never see future generations of these classic inspired cars.

I sold my ND in this exact colour and trim 6 months ago to get into a Porsche Cayman. After spending a fair amount of time with the cayman. I think the ND is the better car. The Miata is just that good. But be careful with he active bonnet! It triggers very easily and costs a fortune to repair.

Hats off to Mazda for continuing to build and improve the MX-5. High revving lightweight, rear-drive affordable cars are endangered species. And unfortunately a lot of young folks will miss the opportunity to experience this type of purity. No turbo, no big V8, no all wheel drive, no 22” wheels... None of that nonsense but still a thrill on the road or at the track. I’m well over 6 feet tall. I may never own an MX-5, but I appreciate it.

This engine would be spicy in the Mazda3, and downright hawt in a Mazda2! Alternatively this output per liter in the 2.5L would be over 225HP! That would be a handy option to slot between the 3 GT and the 300ish HP Mazdaspeed3 said to be on the way! That kind of car really appeals to me more than the big dik turbo versions. Mazda is at its best being Mazda, not trying to compete with Mitsu and Subaru.

Would love to see them do something similar to their 2.5 L engine for the new Mazda 3. I know it's going to be the new skyactive X but really would love to see a high redline. With their modifications to the MX5 they have turned a Great car into a Legend. blain sg Doug DeMuro is a _real mixed bag._ Half the time I just want to "friendly punch" his extremely annoying face, voice, and mannerisms as he just rubs me the wrong way with his cockiness. The other of the time he goes into great details about things most reviewers just outright ignore, or don't notice, which can be really informative. Regardless, his enthusiasm is one of his better points -- he is a car fanatic and his passion shows. Imagine how tiring it must be to be constantly reviewing "yet-another-car" of Brand X that is similar to Brand Y and trying to keep it "fresh" and engaging -- so I'm willing to cut him _some_ slack. He maybe controversial but at least you won't be bored watching his videos! Other reviewers tend to more dry and focused on the facts so they aren't quite as entertaining to watch. Pick your poison. The spoilt rich kids who never had to work a day in their life and love to flaunt their expensive, obnoxiously overpriced hyper/super cars are some of the worst. Every reviewer has biases. Best is to watch half a dozen to try to get a _complete_ perspective accounting for their weaknesses and match what you value. At the end of the day none of the reviewers know you best except you.

I plan on hanging onto my Mazda3 for a couple more years, but this new wave of Mazdas coming out will certainly be what I am choosing from from down the line. I may end up getting a newer Mazda3 if they can make that car have some more pep, but I’m also going to flirt with the idea of keeping my current Mazda3 as a beater and simply adding a MiataRF. These guys are doing a good job of evolving their lineup, especially when you factor in what they did to the Mazda6. Hopefully they can get every model pumped up a bit, and then turn their focus back to the MazdaSpeed side once again.

My 1st MX-5 was 2016 automatic, bought in late 2015. I drove it for a little over 2 years, then traded it for a new 2017 in March of this year. I can't stay out of it! I've put over 12K miles on it in less than 6 mos. The reason for this comment is to talk about the Mazda dealers really. I had the seats in my old MX-5 redone in Mercedes leather, racing muffler and air breather. I asked if these items could be switched to a new MX-5 if I were to buy one and all 4 dealerships didn't have a problem with the request. Never heard of stuff like that in any American car dealership that I've ever heard of. Last but not least.... Never, Never buy a sportscar with automatic trans.

0:19 It's not 26hp more AAAAND 700 more revs. It's 26hp more BECAUSE of these 700 more revs. Torque times revs = HP. ;P

That's not true. The torque is not linear and highest power is never at highest RPM.

Going to sound dumb but the car is too small, I'm 6'4 and cannot drive the vehicle for the life of me. My BRZ on the other hand, perfect. If I could fit in an mx5 i would buy one hands down.

I’ve only sat in one of these a while back, but one of the best features is the easy manual top. Every small convertible should have a manual top.

Yep, those revs remind me of the Honda engines of old with 7 - 9k rev limits. So good. 0 - 60 isn't where a car of that nature excels. 30 - 70mph with the engine at 3 - 7k brings out the joy with NA high rev'ers.
