We review the new Mazda3 AWD, FWD, Sedan and Hatchback in a technical video that focuses on quality over quantity. If you want to learn more about the details including the good and bad on the next generation Mazda, this is the place to be. While other products like the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Corolla Hatch are good choices a new start and direction is always risky yet exciting.

Toyota4Life.....too bad their cars are so ugly. Their grills are over the top humungous and the styling on most of their vehicles, including Lexus, reminds me of Predator meets Optimus Prime and these cars are their offspring. Mazdas are more driver focused and the styling is beautiful. Btw I've owned more Toyotas than most people. In the last 20 years: 4 Tundras, 3 4Runners, 2 FJs, 2 Lexus and 2 Camry's. I now own 2 Hondas and a Mazda. They are all great cars and as far as a Toyota goes only their trucks are pleasing to look at...and the 4Runner.

Saw this review yesterday. Heavily impressed with the clear technical details. Went and bought the 2019 Blue Mazda 3 sedan GLS with luxury package [Canada] . Never been in such a polished looking interior at this price range or above. Both front and rear. What struck me most during the test drive was the superb driving position. I am 6 feet tall and I felt like I was sitting outside on the bonnet of the car with a full view of the road. Knew exactly where my front left and right part of the car were. The front wind shield has superb visibility. Driving dynamics is insane, especially merging on freeways, quick acceleration and braking. Already test drove the 2020 Corolla LE [ which has a smoother back seat ride with multi link suspension but the car lacks soul ] and I was going to test drive the Civic EX model later. Skipped the test drive. Bought the 3 immediately. So much soft touch components . The interior is a piece of art. You get transformed into an aspirational vehicle as opposed to a point A to point B utility compact sedan. Well done Mazda and great review Savage.

Toyota stopped caring when they shoved a Subaru engine in the GT86. Now they have a re skinned BMW as their halo car.. Mazda is the only manufacturer that I've seen put so much effort in car dynamics and optimizing the chassis. Mazda still stands by their philosophy that driving the car is the experience, not the distractions from infotainment systems and other "cool" accessories. And from my experience Hyundai and Honda are the only other two that care about this as well, not to the same extent but still.

I totally agree - Mazda should have way more sales than it actually does. Toyotas and Hondas are decent cars, but Mazdas are great cars! When it comes to caring, I do think Hyundai/Kia deserve a runner-up mention though, the quality and desirability of all of their recent cars and crossovers is very high and still rising, with accolades well-deserved. They no longer compete on price (although they still remain a good value) and with each new model the gap closes to the point where I would choose many of their vehicles over some other established brands, such as Nissan, Ford, anything GM, etc.

For those wondering: I've had the 2019 AWD Preferred hatchback for almost a year now and after 20k miles I love it just as much as I did brand new. No issues with the car other than recalls which have all been taken care of in a timely manner for free and a free loaner was available by the dealership. It's also worth noting that none of the recalls have personally affected me. I average about 30mpg (32 or 33 in good weather) per tank on 40% city and 60% highway. Cylinder deactivation has not caused any issues or concerns. It's seamless and I firmly believe it helps you get a consistent average regardless of driving habits and variability of lengths and speeds of trips. If you learn to utilize cylinder deactivation (i.e. understand how/when it activates and purposely driving to encourage it), getting mid 30s shouldn't be hard at all. The AWD and traction control work very well and give you the sure footedness feeling you want in snow, rain, and dirt even at highway speeds (although the stock tires are crappy so I'm waiting for them to wear out so I can get nicer ones). It also does let you play in the snow if you turn off the systems and sends enough power to the rear to power slide. The electronic systems work as expected for an economy car with some luxury touches such one touch up and down for all four windows, walk away auto lock, and the mirrors auto tilt down in reverse if enabled. You also have lots of customizable options for the safety and car systems as well as the ability to make the heated seats automatically controlled by the climate control. The two position memory for seats/stereo/aircon can be linked to a specific fob if you like. The Bose stereo and infotainment is really nice. Sometimes I wish I had a touchscreen when using Android Auto but for the most part I've gotten used to the wheel and it is easier to do while driving. The sound quality itself it amazing and impressive for the price point. More bass than most people need, more fine tuning and adjustments for the settings as well as turning off the Bose features and having standard processing if desired. Rear seats are comfortable and fine for kids and adults in short trips. I don't expect adults to road trip back there. Having individual seat belt indicators is nice for people who have kids and want to make sure they are strapped in. Trunk is usable and fine for most things, technically it's a good amount of space but it's not a lot of depth so expect to pile or stack things. Folding down the seats does give you plenty of storage space. Power and dynamics are pretty well balanced. In the Northern Midwest we don't have as high speed limits on our highways, our roads are also not the smoothest. In terms of daily driver economy car it is on the firm side and while there isn't turbo or torque surge down low, it does a great job or being economical and reasonably powerful for it's size. Being a larger engine it does sound more natural and less gratey than say a 1.5T. the six speed is tried and true, doesn't hunt for gears and after a few thousand miles it gets to know you pretty well and works seamlessly. Sport mode offers quicker throttle response, holds gears nicely, and adds more engine breaking which in turn adds more stability in corners. As for the rear suspension, my previous car was a Honda with independent suspension. It has its pros and cons, it was great new but over the years it was worn out and more expensive to replace and get the original feel back after two decades than it was worth. I never did fix it, alas an economy car being eaten alive by rust. Being a simpler setup on the 3 I imagine it'll maintain that factory handling characteristic far longer. Suspension beliefs and bias's aside the suspension works great and allows you to take corners very well. You'll easily take turns at the double speed. At tripple the speed it's a question of tires. And in windy roads getting close to tripple digits you'll experience brake fade and under steer from tires before maxing out the suspension. All in all, as a daily driver this will fit most people's needs without breaking the bank. And for people more used to early 2000 dynamics with their hydraulic steering, linear brake feel,and linear power curve this will be very easy to get used to. Here in the US you'll at least get some exclusivity for the time being unlike a Carrolla or Civic. I plan on keeping this car at least until 100k if not 150k, or like my last car, a Honda, 200k.

@@Rabahsaurus oh trust me, I really really wanted another Accord. The Accord 2.0T Sport with the 10spd is a better drivetrain. Also considered an Accord Hybrid and the Insight because I was commuting really far pre-covid. But when I sat in the Mazda 3 the interior quality blew me away. Sure the civic hatchback and Accord Sport is more powerful at the same cost (this was before the Mazda 3 Turbo was an option) and they both had more space. But the interior felt nice, it seemed to ride quieter, the Bose stereo was a straight knockout, it looked amazing on the outside in person, and the Mazda had luxury touches the Hondas didn't. Like one touch auto up and down windows on all four, standard LED lighting, the Bose stereo has metal speaker grills, frameless auto dimming mirror, the wing mirror tilts down in reverse to help parallel park, blind spot monitor and cross traffic alert was standard, power lumbar, climate control had automatic heated seats, then later on it got Remote Start via Connected Services, etc. But a lot of these features I only came to find and appreciate after the fact. Most importantly at the time of purchase; the seats were more supportive for me, heated seats, it had AWD, and a better stereo at essentially the same cost.

James Medina The speed is key . Regulations required auto manufacturers to tune crusing speed lower than national speed limit. This burns more fuel, and also lowers the speed on average, thus lowering the wreck and injury stats as well . Personally I have found another way to get better mpg than going 15+ mph slower than traffic. A 4 stroke engine has a rhythm kinda . It prefers to settle in at certain speeds . Just find the proper place. Like Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawer said “ You gotta hold your mouth rite to get fish to bite” This individual above told you exactly how he got the maximum mpg. Optimal mpg will be found above the legal speed limit. Probably with Cruz set at about half of the mph maximum mpg is found. 50-55 mph 4 max . 20 mph slower than average speed limit 70mph . At half is 7/8 mph. (. Posted speed ) + 10 mph .
@johnwayne7476
@johnwayne7476 4 жыл бұрын
Then you will gain about half of what is lost at 70 . Or 5 mpg. A Lincoln mark viii in standard trim was the best high speed high mpg car that i Know Of. After 70mph using cruise control to gain speed in 2/3 mph intervals at a time by pressing the resume button it gained mpg until about 95 mph . Not much gain only a few mpg . But it didn’t lose any mpg until almost 100 mph . It was long ago , still I am certain. We also got better petro back then as well. Today it’s got a lot of methanol added for some reason. 🤨. Likewise gas treatment for removing water from the fuel system such as ( isoheat) contain mostly methanol. Or wood alcohol. Lower grade fuel . Octane level was about the same. Before then we got real leaded hi combustion petro . In 1967 Regular Gasoline was 118 octane.

What a refreshing change of pace from the usual presenters, who focus more on fascia than the true nature of the beast: how it delivers a person to a destination, including power handling and balance, to frame-and-stability engineering and tuning. Thank you so much for truly understanding car (and engineering process) enthusiasts. I was talking my wife away from Toyota because their interiors and ideals have just gone into outer space and disregard customer wants. I wanted to show her the 2019 Mazda 3, because I wanted to get her into something that embraces the driver. A car is something we should be driving, not something that should be trying to distract us from getting to our destination as much as possible. Queue a SavageGeese review. Thank you :)

@@michaelpolutta3131 well, your experience is lacking then. I'm not going to throw model names around, because you ruling certain sports models out is ridiculous. Not even BMW steering systems can emulate "feedback", and these are considered "ultimate driving experience" cars.

I watched this video over a year ago during my last semester of college, back in December 2019. I fell completely in love with this car and I promised myself that when I got a job out of college that I would save up money and buy one new from the dealership. Fast forward to January 2021 and I finally got my dream car! I got the 2021 Mazda3 sedan with the Select package. I've owned the car for a little over a month now and I'm still in love with it. Skipped the AWD version because it's significantly more expensive and because it doesn't snow where I live (San Diego) so AWD seems kinda pointless. Do wish I could've asked for a turbo though!
@CrunchyTire
@CrunchyTire 2 жыл бұрын
The car is low so even with AWD its not going to be a beast in deep snow. The benefit is more for people who like to drive even semi hard. Going around a corner in a FWD with good speed feels....bad. If you get used to AWD or RWD then use a FWD car you immediately notice it. The AWD just lets you feel so much more planted to the ground.

I really LIKE how totally DETAILED your review is. Especially all the INTERIOR ERGONOMICS. This really makes or breaks a car for me, how well I interact with the controls, seating, driving position, etc. That's why I drive BMWs, they aren't as flashy as other cars, but every subtle point of DRIVER INTERACTION has been carefully addressed. So much so, they become an extension of your body and you don't have to think about it. This aspect of automotive design is often given much less attention than it deserves - especially in infotainment systems.

Mr. Goose, this is seriously one of your best videos. Getting these kinds of specs and depth of information from the manufacturer makes a huge impact on the video. I wish all the companies were getting this kind of info to you.

Very well done review! I appreciate all the technical information and the beautiful cinematography! I bought a 2010 Mazda 3 for my daughter and I like it, but this is on a whole different level.

The Doug Demuro review of this is an old Mazda 3. This review is the new Mazda 3. Your review is miles ahead of his.
