The single knob handle allows you to keep your hand closer to the reel. A matter of ergonomics. For me, it lets you apply more cranking power without the opposite handle obstructing the way as you crank the handle with your hand close to the reel. The negative of having a single knob is you tend to fumble looking for the knob if you are used to a two knob handle. Takes some getting used to.

Awesome vid as usual! Regarding the drag question at around the 31 minute mark...There are two schools of thought on this, and it has been debated before on Alan Tani's site.1) use a carbon fiber under gear washer, and try and squeeze a few more pounds of drag out of the reel.2) use a delrin (or similar) under gear washer, let the drag be created in the stack of keyed and eared washers.The delrin will allow for the smoothest possible drag, even at higher settings.I personally subscribe with theory 2, but everyone is different... More importantly, take into account the style of reel (conventional vs levelwind), quality of build and components (SS vs brass or aluminum), and reel size, and determine what you feel is a usable drag for a particular reel. We all know they can print anything on the side of a box, and the reel may do it, but probably not for long! just my .02$ lol...that said, i do have a Tiburon framed Senator with cf under the gear that is a mini winch...but it also has SS aftermarket gear sleeve and just about every other beefed up part available.. I think the resin component is higher drag than you may expect. It may only be there as a last-gasp safety. Greased carbon probably doesn't have as much stiction as the resin on brass so you're likely running on the carbon most of the time. Also, the resin will not leave carbon dust on the gears, which is important. That carbon fiber dust will wear gears, so it's better that it's captured in the stack the way it is.
@TackleAdvisors5 жыл бұрын
That is one of the only reasons that I can come up with for why they don't go some sort of carbon. Carbon dust is no Bueno

I use a bunch. My favorite I can't recommend because I've seen on the web and a friend have major identical issues. And it's fins 40g (5lb test... It's really 10lb diameter). Never have used a line that handled so well and lasted like new so long. 2 full seasons on a spinner and I still saved it when I moved on to try other lines. That's the only real stand out in the light lines. Fireline Ultra 8 is great but needs fancy knots for good break strengths. My all time favorite might be fireline tracer braid (haven't used the new stuff). I use a bunch of new braids every year and more and more they differ less. Only thing is the super slick lines like ultra 8, gliss and nanofil hate regular knots

I do catfish gear and everyone talks about drag all the time, but I never use more than 5 pounds of drag. Never. Sometimes I gently thumb the spool for a second or two - on spinning or baitcasting - and that's it. Even catfish doesn't need 30 pounds of drag. And you very right about musky. I have the full video of 40" musky on a ultralight... i don't know if that fish took even 10 yards of line with 2 pounds of pressure.. With all of that said, this failure is a little disapointing. I don't care how strong the drag is, but this kind of pressure can accidentally occur. What if ur drag was tightened because u were setting the hook on a bass and wanted to avoid slip so to drive the hook in. What if then u accidentally u snag a 20 pound carp? Your drag is tightened and the first pull will be nasty. This would perfectly replicate your test and that super expensive reel will be ruined.
@TackleAdvisors5 жыл бұрын
For reel. 5lbs is quite a bit. For rambling hooksets on bass gear around cover I like 5 to 7. Stripers and boofish 7 to 12 and tuna shark and swords 18 to 30.
@nicks25815 жыл бұрын
I_fish, the amount of drag you need is dependant on species and location. Open water blues in a lake or off a boat in a river, 5lbs is fine. Flatheads out of heavy cover, or blues and flatheads out of heavy current and you are better off with more drag. 10lbs is not enough drag to turn a 40in flathead that decides to run with the current and allowing a fish that is notorious for seeking out snags that kind of room to run is a fool's game; eventually the fact that these fish have the potential to eclipse 100lbs will catch up to you if you are not using the appropriate gear. And, muskie do fight like wet rags and should not be considered when discussing fish fighting potential. The main reason you want that extra drag for muskie fishing is to ensure positive hooksets in their bony mouth. Finally, if you need to thumb the spool while fighting fish, you either need to turn your drag up or upgrade your gear.

First you have to diagnose what came out of allignment, failed or wore out. In this case after checking for any crunched bearings. Or bent shafts. Idler gears, levelwind bits etc. It seems to be main or pinion gear related (assuming pinion due to feeling it 360 degrees. So a new gear set would need to be ordered to fix. (never replace one of the two gears....they will wear to the point that you needed to replace them in the first place incredibly quickly.)

Dylan Goss I would highly suggest the Daiwa Fuego, it’s a really great feel for the price, and you can normally find them around $60-80.

Really can't go wrong with the BG, Nasci, Fuego or the okuma epixor xt

So I just got this reel, guess I shoulda watched this video first Any reason I send it back for something else? Btw the weedless Warbaits Market Squid is my goto, everything just seems to love it, I generally put a twin tail grub on it and hook em up!

It's an excellent reel overall... Despite the drag snafu... I've put quite a few fish on it this season and thoroughly enjoy it... Stripers to mid 20#s handled it without issue. Great caster too

@@TackleAdvisors thanks man! I'll just keep it and not test the drag lol

@@TackleAdvisors how do you think the abu stack's up against a lexa hd? I just lost my tranx rig and replaced it with this.

Should I purchase this reel for 240$. Do you think that's a good deal for this reel?

Make a review or comparison of kastking spartkus maximus baitcaster. Its a deeper spool reel, would be interesting to see how it stands out against abu beast x or different reel in that sizs

The "new penn fathom 300" is exactly the same reel abu revo beast 40

Saltiga 35 jigging reel which handles 80lb braid has max drag of 22lb. Arms almost gave out at around 16lb. 33lb on a baitcaster... LOL

Someone has to work out.. Lol.. Kidding... I set most of my joggers at 18 lbs.. And trolling around 21 - 25...little 12oz reels can stop some large.. But for how long

@@TackleAdvisors yea. I guess its just one way for manufactures to provide that WOW factor and differentiate themselves from the rest.

That's the word I was looking for...but I went the Phenolic resin route (I had a custom pool cue with a phenolic joint and tip) Looked identical....that amber color and fabric underlay. Lots of reels use that and have for a VERY LONG TIME!

I have that same reel and I also have the jdm version called the revo big shooter and the jdm version big shooter is much smoother and it also has a click drag that the usdm doesn’t have I wonder if the reels Abu sends to japan have better quality control ? GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS When are you going to show the concepts Z results I can’t wait to see them👍

I always thought that washer under the main gear was simply a spacer. It needs to be dense to keep the main gear from encroaching on the a/r dog. The okuma komodo will run circles around that reel. Here is one in action. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWfFmIytd7uUabs
@TackleAdvisors5 жыл бұрын
It does keep the gear elevated but the gear does turn against it like a drag washer. If it casts like the Toro which I bet is close. Max distance wise it'll beat it if that matters. But the komodo is a tank. One of the most beastly of the low pros for sure
@Berto-11172 жыл бұрын
I have a komodo and its super rugged but it doesnt run circles around the beast... at all... the beast is a much smoother reel and is more pleasant to fish, when you have a fish on you barely have to crank, just dont go over 12lbs of drag, that applies to any low profile baitcaster, ive cought a ton of fish on both but more on the abu and it feels like new, i also have a tranx and its awesome as well

Looks a lot like a piscifun Thunder.

That's why Shimano and Daiwa's reels have bearing on the pinion gear, and the drag is limited to 10-11lb - not to break the reel. Abu knows about that problem but why to solve it? If the costumers break there reels they buy new ones, this is how Abu can sell more and make more profit. This is the only video about Abu that shows the worst problem with there low profile reels for heavy fishing, the reels with SHORT spool shaft the problem is even worst. Thank you for the video Sir, you have open eyes to many anglers. People have to watch this video before buy Abu low profile reels for heavy fishing. Do it before Abu ask the owner to take it down.

Youl will not have any issues if you dont go about 12lbs, itll last as long as a tranx, ive had both for 2 years, if youre reffering to the lexa i would not put it in the same league as the revo beast, or tranx, or komodo, the lexa is inferior (the regular one) also i have doubts about the bearing on the pinion gear, i dont even see that on heavy duty saltwater reels, its more of s gimick imo, if you look at the way the shaft goes into these reels, there isnt much for that bearing to really support. For fresh water abu garcia is a top brand no question of it, dont be brand loyal
