I wouldn't dare say such a thing. But it would appear that 10 idiots (At this writing did). How can anyone put a dislike on this episode in US history. Shame on you all. The resurection of this machine is a feat of engineering in itself. But to have a machine like Big Boy, made in 1941 when everything was calculated with slide rules and designed on paper with pencils and scale rulers, is also impressive. This is a monument to the engienuity of our Grandfathers, their skills, determination to get the job done and the ability to design and then build a machine that can last this long, through tortured years of neglect and disuse.

That’s a fine piece of machinery out there in its full glory. I am from India and just happened to come across this locomotive on the Internet and realized it was the largest ever built. When I got know it’s being restored, had been waiting for the past few years for it to breathe again. That day’s finally arrived. I wish I had the time and money to see it in person. My grandpa was a steam engine drive wheel machinist for UP in Laramie. Had a good job through the great depression thanks to UP. My Dad was a fireman for a while, between Laramie and Cheyenne was the scariest in high winds, still is. I remember rabbit hunting with my Dad on Pumpkin-vine road near Laramie in the mid-seventies when a steam engine passenger train blew by us. Fond memories for him, amazement at its speed for me.

Absolutely there were many that cared not just in the 40’s but for their whole life from a very young age. My father born in 1911 literally took thousands of photographs of all aspects of railroads with the engines being a constant inspiration.I talked with many who are now departed that were in awe of the steam locomotive. They were not rare but nonetheless they were appreciated!

As a kid, i would just stare and wander all around 4014 when it was displayed at the LA county fairgrounds. I was amazed at its size. To see it run again is a thrill of a lifetime. I hope they come down to Southern California soon. I've seen 3985 (watched it turn on the Pedley wye) and the 844. If and when I see 4014, I can die a happy man

I love what you've done and want to thank you for sharing that here. As an amateur photographer I can tell you picked your spots carefully. No choice but to shoot toward the sun. You managed it well. If you don't mind some advice. Just slow down your panning action and I won't end up with motion sickness. For the close ups, I usually pan with the direction the train is going by focusing on one spot and move the camera with it in focus. Hey, keep it coming. Not bad, not bad at all.

I love how throughout the vid 8937 is like "Why am i here these two old timers can pull five times my weight alone, and they have way more experience than me running trains....", 844 is like "Come on pops pick up the pace a little, it seems like its taking forever...." and 4014 is like "You young'uns shut your pie holes and let me get my wheels back, i've been nappin for 60 damn years! Don't need to run like a bat outta crazyness the first time out, sheesh!"

Looking back to other double headed excursions this one is definitely number one but there hasn’t been a better one since either 844 double heading with 4449, 844 and 3985, 611 and 1218, 765 and 1225, and 2102 and 425 on those runs.

Still has that pronounced clank in the stbd side of the lead engine. Hope it's not doing damage to rod/crankpins/joints. Looks like they got the steam leak of a few days past, at the gland on the same side of the same engine repaired/sealed. Bon Voyage!

Silly question but is it always being pushed everywhere by the diesel on major journeys? There seems to be a big lack of steam but other vids show it really pushing it out?

Maroon Skygod...... The diesel is usually there to provide extra braking power with the dynamic braking, however - in this case, it is also there to help push on the grades. Not because the 4014 can't handle it, but Ed wanted to put 450 - 500 miles on the 4014 Before leaving out for Ogden... he was never even able to get 100 miles on it... partially due to the gland packing issues in the front engines cylinders on the break-in run a few days back and had to be pulled back to the shop from Nunn, CO. It is 435 miles from Cheyenne to Ogden (on the UP mainline)... if all goes well with no issues en-route to Ogden, UT.. and everything checks out before they leave Ogden, then he will start working it a little harder on the return run to Cheyenne on May 12th.

Thanks for bringing us this video. I'm curious to know if when you were following along with the vehicle, did you clock the speed of the locomotive? I've ridden behind the 844 a couple of times from Denver to Cheyenne and we were clocked at upwards of 70 mph.

okmrocksU....... All I can tell you is that judging by the movement of the side rods he's not working it too hard, 45 to 50mph maybe. Ed said a while back that they were wanting to get it all done soon enough so that he would be able to put a good 500 miles on it After the break-in run, Before they were to leave-out for Ogden.... that did not happen, in fact they were not even able to finish the break-in run with the 8937 pushing, due to excessive steam pressure leakage on Both of the front engines cylinders, especially the right (Ed's) side (gland packing). They wound up having the 8937 pull it (in reverse) back to the shop from Nunn, CO.... they didn't even make it to Greeley, so he's "running light" on the throttle until they get some good miles on it and know that "all is well" before he "leans" on the throttle more.... better safe than sorry, they've spent more than 16 times what they cost to build new in 1941 ($265,000. = $4.6 million ea. in 2018/19), they sure do not want to risk destroying it.

I figured there would be some break-in time and that they were running it slower for that. I was not aware of the cylinder leaks or that it was pulled back to the shop from Nunn. So Ed Dickens and his team overhaul an engine over 5 years, little time left for them to test run/break in or familiarize themselves with best operating nuances of this particular engine and to cap it off under the eye of a gazillion cameras and media armchair experts... I wonder if Ed or the steam team have any gray hair or hair at all ? Whatta testament to these guys, if id been in charge poor old 4014 would have blown up like the Hindenburg...
