Hi Graham, It is a locomotive of staggering proportions. Our cameras were eight feet off the ground and we were lucky to have a prime location. I did not want the overview on the bridge, I wanted to be close. The effort was nothing, it was a moment to dream of. Big Boy just after topping Sherman pass. Summit of the grade of the continental railroad coming out of Cheyenne. It was wonderful. A lovely memory my friend. Thank you, Rob

Great video Rob! And a fabulous turnout too! Reminds me of when our biggest steam loco returned to service, the iconic NSWGR Beyer Garratt 6029 4-8-4 + 4-8-4 of which I was on its inaugural run. It was fantastic! So pleased to see 4014 back on the boil again though. Such an iconic piece of American railroad history. Long live the Big Boy! Cheers Caleb

Hi Caleb, I was a great event. I think the UP tried Garrett designs but had problems. When the war broke out, they needed a way to bring huge consists of military equipment up over the Sherman Hill as the called it. It is really a pass. They built these 4-8-8-4s to do that work. That is all they did from 42 till 51. They were in the shop more than on the rails. It was a war machine. Thank you so much, I am so happy you found this, Rob

@FarlandHowe5 жыл бұрын
The diesel is for electricity. Although 844 was built for passenger service it cannot cope with the demands for heating and cooling a modern passenger car. 844 was there as a back up in case 4014 had any problems. Thank you, Rob
@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
@@FarlandHowe The diesel locomotive in tow was NOT for passenger car electricity. UP does not own any modern diesels with HEP (Head End Power) for coaches. The passenger coaches get there power from a dedicated "Power car" which has an onboard generator. It's the second car behind the Diesel 8937. Car # 209. The diesel locomotive is there to provide dynamic braking when needed and as an insurance policy should the 4014 break down and need to be pushed off the mainline rather than delay other trains. The same reason UP runs all there trains with multiple locomotives. Now the trailing diesel also provides PTC (Positive Train Control) for the 4014 to comply with FRA regulations.
