Hey guys, so here's a quick revisit to the AW Polo GTI. It is still quite good since it's release in 2018, and I strongly believe it's the benchmark, simply because its predecessor, the 6c, can be quite unreliable, and its successor, the AW Facelift, Is quite expensive.

Here is my take on my 2019 Polo GTI: I've been blessed to be able to get this car with a 6MT instead of a DSG. The very first thing I noticed is that the curb weight of my 6MT 2019 Polo GTI is literally 100kg lighter than the DSG version (1241kg for the manual and 1355 for DSG version). Second, the DSG seems to have way too long gearing particularly affecting the 100-200km/h times. The 6MT seems to be much better geared. The only problem - most of the world only ever got the DSG version - but the manual version available at least in central Europe (Germany, Austria, Slovenia, etc.) seems to perform way better. The average DSG 2019 Polo GTI does 100-200km/h in about 21-22 seconds. My Polo GTI 6MT does the exact same in 15.8 seconds, on a straight and leveled road (not downhill). And I swear to god I'm not shitting you. That's a MIND BOGGLING difference. Obviously the DSG would highly likely take me 0-100, but man, what the hell. We're talking a whopping 5 seconds of difference 100-200, that's a huge margin. Whatever the DSG gets in 0-100 it would absolutely lose back and more, to a 6MT version in a 1/2 race, possibly even a 1/4 with good manual shifting. It's like we're talking completely different car. That 100kg difference is also huge. Had the chance of driving both my manual and the DSG version (ended up buying the manual obviously) and was wondering at the time why the manual actually felt snappier, and especially felt lighter on the steering wheel. Weird.

I didn't even know these came in Manual, in South Africa especially it's the last place you'll see the manual version, DSG is so popular out here... But man that's insane, like you said it's like we're talking of a completely different car, good one mate👌

My 6C has had water pump replaced and needed a DSG teardown because there was an issue with at least one of the bushings (scraping when shifting from 3rd to 2nd). Despite that, I would still take it over the AW, just because it feels livelier and more exciting to drive. I might have a different opinion if the DSG repair hadn't been under warranty though. Both generations look great, but the new electronic interface is definitely something I can do without.

Thank you for the Series i think the AW prefacelift is the sweet spot in the polo 6 gti range i heard theres alot of issues on the facelift in terms of the infortainment system

And VW isn't solving them because they don't have technicians equipped to deal with the issues. I'd buy the pre face lift too if i had the money. Muzi Sambo also documented the technical issues on his widely before he sold the car.

The owner should have declined the software update from VW. I refused. Mine still has bubbles and the upshift pop is louder

Wasn't the red dashboard standard and you had to opt out of it? Also if you chose the car in red then it defaulted to the platinum dash? Correct me if I'm wrong here

I don’t think I’ve heard one with a muffler delete, but a downpipe upgrade is really worth it…

Please elaborate more on the gearbox, you said this one is a wer clutch and more durable. Please share more info, these cars are a nail in the butt when it comes to the mechatronics and the dual clutches which in total the both can cost about 70K

The only difference between the two types of clutches is that the dry ones aren't covered in oil. Without the oil, the clutch can't stay as cool, which causes dry clutches to be noisier and wear out more quickly.

Being the Previous Owner of the 6C and the current owner of the 8W I will like to say in terms of playfulness the 6C is superior. The 8W has evolved into a mini golf with most aspects. The sound is very muted the pops and bangs are not there anymore 😢😢😢😢 and I dont want to tune it will probably loose my warranty.

Sadly that's very true...it's not as exciting as it used to be with the 6c... VW isn't strict with modifications especially if it's light, maybe consider like a Rogue Performance downpipe? That will heavily improve the car

This EA888 engine has a lot of tuning potential, it's basically a more economy version of the Golf GTI engine now. But most importantly, the AW EA888 gen3b came with a ported + direct injection so carbon buildup is a non issue. That's huge for long term use.
