There is a better recording of this song by them that actually catches the note that your son couldn't hear... kzbin.info/www/bejne/b53TfIyAa8dpa6c I would watch the whole song - it REALLY showcases the entertainment of the group as well as Tim's freakish range. I personally felt that Geoff was the best of the 3. He had the lowest chest voice and the best control of the three. That's not to take away from the other two, more like a 1a vs a 1b and 1c. I may be splitting hairs here, but I just like Geoff's low notes a little bit better. When it came to the live performances, I liked his by FAR better than the other two. I could actually HEAR his live performances. Tim's I could hear almost as well but they seemed more airy. I could barely hear Avi's live notes. Anyway, great reaction and I look forward to watching many more! *I absolutely love how you involve your kids with many of your reactions. They're the most unbias opinions of them all!*

In live performance videos, the difference in quality is often more a measure of the recording equipment than of the singer. Especially, as is usually the case, in videos shot by fans. Each of these men are stellar bass singers with tremendous access to their higher registers. Ironically, in different interviews, I believe each has suggested focus on expanding one's high range as the best way for aspiring bass singers to improve low notes. There is some magical transitive property nobody seems to really understand.

Loved the reaction. A0 is the lowest note on the piano (which Tim Foust repeatedly crushes in "Sold"). Notation-wise the first part is the pitch (in this case A) and the number is the octave C to C on the keyboard lowest to highest (the lowest C being C1). For reference middle C is C4. Since there are notes on the piano below the lowest C that's where the 0 octave enters (C0 would be the first C below the piano). Octaves below that are negative numbers. Bottom line is these guys are singing well below the bass clef and some are in ranges that are hard for whales to hear. As was mentioned below Tim Storms has the world record of a G-7 (0.189 Hz). For reference when orchestras tune they use the A below middle C which is at 440Hz. Definitely become acquainted with Tim Storms and JD Sumner for some unearthly sub bass singers!! While all here are talented my allegiance goes to Tim Foust for a full 5 octave range. I respect Geoff's range but he often seems a bit emotionally flat (for lack of a better term). Both Tim and Avi bring character and emotional inflection to their singing. If I had to listen to one of these three on their own for a prolonged time, not that the others aren't extraordinary, my vote is Tim Foust.

Sounds like Caleb used a "growl" or "fire-breathing" technique, notes varied a bit but he settled down on an F1! There toward the end it sounded a little more sub-harmonic, but I dont' think it was due to the airiness. He actually is doing an impressive job with it, but there's a lot I don't know about the technique so take it for what it's worth. To my understanding, the 3 bassists in this video pull it off so well for numerous reasons, some of which being: 1. they have deeper resonance and consistent intonation (locking into a particular note) 2. they have technique and stamina to minimize the airy overtones and "pushing" for the sound (only with practice) 3. they have mics with good frequency response and filters and EQ that cuts out the higher register stuff and boosts the low. Basically the growl technique doesn't sound good if it isn't done in a microphone and doctored up a bit.

The problem I have with these bass battles is that it seems to be so much about only how low you can go, and not the actual quality of those low notes. Yes, Tim and Geoff can growl very very low, but there's a lot of distortion when you do that. And sometimes it feels like those low, low notes are just for showing off. Avi's low notes are, I think, more purposeful, clearer (with a few exceptions when he had to do growls), and demonstrate the operatic training he had as a Basso Profundo, where he was taught how to achieve very low notes with timbre, depth and volume.
