I was asked by one of my subscribers who's just purchased a BMW S1000RR to illustrate how I set up my riding modes. So I've made a quick tutorial of how to use the dash, to navigate the menus system to reach the riding mode set up and adjusting the settings.

Thanks for the vid. I have had my M for six months and have only rode in Dynamic. Being a bigger rider, I’m sure adjusting the DDC settings would help me.

thanks for that just ordered one and planning on seeing up a soft mode just until I get the feel of it. Think that fact that they are called race modes hides their true value...

Do u know why I can’t scroll to the left ?
@MikeSpikeEdwards
@MikeSpikeEdwards 4 ай бұрын
To scroll left and right you use the rotating wheel and push either the top or the bottom of the wheel dependant upon which way you want to go. Once the menu has gone as far left or right and dosn't continue to change the screen that is as far as the menu goes. I assume this is what you mean?

Hi Mike have you worked out how to bring up the engine temperature in normal or the sport mode dashes,seems crazy that's it's only in my Vechicle,for a big that would be used on track would be nice to know what it's running at. All previous models of the s1000rr had it permanently on the dash,am I missing something,my local dealer were stumped on this as well,perhaps your links with Alan Jeffries may be able to answer this. thanks Craig friend of the Dave Stan Smith 👌

Hi Craig, in short I haven't. The only thing I use to let me know if the engine is below working temp is the red line on the Tacho is red right down the rpm scale and as the motor warms it get higher and higher. If you go above the red line before the motor is warm the whole thing flashes red. I hate to red it hard before its warm I try to be mechanically sympathetic, really...

Can you tell us what difference the settings make to the performance? Ive had 2 test rides on a s1000rr but wasnt that impressed. havnt had enough time onboard it to piss about with all the settings. The only thing i noticed was the suspension changes are more noticable than the previous model. I felt like the bike didnt have enough torque in the lower revs even in race mode. But i didnt have time to check it was in torque setting 1. Same with engine braking, can you really feel the difference? Cheers. Mike

The engine in the Gen4 is definitely more powerful throughout the rev range but revs slight lower at peak RPM but has a broader speed of power with more torque available at a much lower RPM. This higher torque but lower in the range has the effect to spread out the power. I found running with the 'Engine' mode in 1 making the response much sharper, also with the the 'Traction control' in 1 and the traction control on the L/H switch in a higher minus number allowed the engine to deliver more power to the ground. Anti Wheelie too in a Low setting as this in turn restricts the power under acceleration particularly in the lower gears. The engine braking can be corner dependant, in a low setting the bike can push slightly into the turns where in the higher settings you can end up with the engine really pulling the bike up and if you're in a long corner and are part throttling the transition on/off throttle is quite dramatic. They are such a capable machine.

Hello Mike. I was wondering, do you know how high the front wheel comes up with wheelie control on setting 1? I don’t want to take DTC off but maximum wheelie control is too restricting for me
@MikeSpikeEdwards
@MikeSpikeEdwards 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, it goes higher than I like to go to be honest, I'm sure the hero wheelie gods would find the limit easier.

@@MikeSpikeEdwards thanks for the reply! I wish they made it so you can set the degree of the wheelie yourself. I’d be happy with a foot off the ground and to chase it out. Im too afraid to test the limits without an aid :P

Hiya Spike. I’m thinking upgrading to a gen 4. These rider pro modes, are they an option, or just on the M Sport.

Richie, I've just got a regular 'ole S1000RR none of that fancy M Sport for me... This is the standard dash.

Hi mike I've got Portimao next week, what starting point would you recommend my suspension settings?
@MikeSpikeEdwards
@MikeSpikeEdwards 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, the base setting that BMW come up with is a great starting point. I tend to go a little stiffer with the front positive 1 or 2, and the rear plus 2 rebound and plus 3 or 4 compression because of the compression in the bottom of the dips. But its a pace based setting, the harder you are pushing the firmer you may need to go. However, the last time I was there the surface was quite bumpy in places then I needed to soften it off a bit to give the bike chance to absorb the bumps. Base setting is where I'd start. Good luck and have fun.

Forgot, put a couple of turns on the rear preload as I found the bike a little softly sprung, it might help too.

Hi Mike, what TC setting do you use in race mode? E.g bar adjustment -7 to +7 helpful video btw
@MikeSpikeEdwards
@MikeSpikeEdwards 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, it can depend on what the track surface is like and how long I'd like the tyre to last. If its abrasive and I want the tyre to last I would be + 3/4 but you are loosing time on drive. However generally -4/5. Hope this helps.
