I really like this pattern and your mask has turned out beautifully. This would be great for my mother because she has a Cochlear Implant and glasses so regular masks add so much bulk behind her ears. For Mum the darts would probably be better than elastic. I have modified it to make a larger one. The person was a bit bigger than me. I copied my pattern at a ratio of 110% That seemed to fit them better. I have not tried it for children. For hearing aids, my husband has abutments that were surgically placed behind his ears. The transmitting devices snap into those. Then a power booster fits over each ear. He can't have a mask that wraps around his ears...so, this style should work well. I'm going to try Velcro, and a button style to see which he can work with better. I think Velcro would be more adjustable. We'll see... I like the idea of elastic along the chin. I will try it. Thanks for your efforts and the pattern!
@kathyn39784 жыл бұрын
Bobbie Durham if you add Velcro to the back, round it so there are no sharp corners before you sew it on. Also have the rough part of the Velcro...the hook...on the piece that faces out if possible. Much more comfortable. Im using it now thanks to a comment my husband said about a month ago

Looks like an great mask especially not having to deal with elastic or hair holders which do not stay in place over the ears. How long was the piece of elastic used for the chin part? Could you please send the pattern?
@thesewciopathcrafter4 жыл бұрын
For the chin elastic, it depends on how stiff and stretchy your elastic is. I use a fairly stretchy 1\2" wide elastic that is about 4" long. If your elastic is stiff and not very stretchy, you might need a 5" piece. I would not go thinner than 1/2" wide or wider than 3/4" or your chin area will be too bulky. For the loop elastic, I am using thinner hair rubber bands without the metal on them. I have also used a stretchy 1/4" elastic made into a loop. You want this piece pretty stretchy and thin enough to go around your button.

thank you for posting an alternative to the traditional masks out there. have a question or 2 for you. Can you put elastic or pleats around the bridge of the nose ? if yes where would they go on the pattern. I ask since the masks that I've been using has space along side the nose. This causes my glasses to fog up every time I breath out. and, I'm guessing, making it so the air comes in the same way. it's frustrating. I've thought of making the arc/curve that create the center seam more pronounced allowing for a larger pocket on the inside. I was hoping that this would allow for a place for the exhales air to go and stop the inside fabric layer from being sucked into my face when I inhale. can't be healthy. any suggestions or thoughts?
@thesewciopathcrafter4 жыл бұрын
heather weber I don’t have a spot for the wire, but I don’t see why you couldn’t add a very slender one at the top and insert a pipe cleaner. Then you could remove the wire when you laundered it. I have never found anything that completely stops the glasses fog:( You could potentially stiffen the front to hold its shape better by using fusible interfacing. It would be tricky, but I think it could be done using a lightweight one on the out fabric. Hope that helps.

You should never use pins in your masks. The more you pin, the less protection you have as the pin holes compromise the tight weave of the fabric.
@thesewciopathcrafter4 жыл бұрын
If you wash and dry before use, it will be fine. This is to keep your germs in. As I stated, it is not a medical-grade mask. It is simply an added, limited layer of protection for the people who don't want or can't get the medical-grade masks. If you use 100% cotton, the pinholes will shrink back up after you dry on high heat. But DO NOT MICROWAVE. Cotton can burn. Hope this helps.

There is also a completely non-elastic version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqi9mJ6EmbCfptU Also, in the listing description FAQ's, there is a section on the elastic. It depends on your elastic. I prefer 1/2" wide, soft stretchy elastic. I cut a 4" piece, fold it in half to find the center, place the center on my front seam, stretch out one half, and mark it on my material with a pencil. That is where I start it. So, if you don't have the same size elastic, that method should still work for placement. Hope this helps:)

Hello this would be so convenient for me bc I wear glasses and have to wear a headset for work. My printer isn't wrkn at the moment. If I can't download the pattern, does the purchase on Etsy gives the dimensions to draw yourself? Thx so much.

Problem with flannel is that it gives off pieces of fibers. My mother sucked a fiber down her throat and it ended up in her lungs and she ended up with cancer in that spot and passed away. You might reconsider lining these with anything that can give off fibers like that. It might be soft but it’s not very healthy. Thank you for making masks but I think I’ll pass on the flannel.

Could you use bendable pieces instead of elastic . We can’t get elastic I’ve ordered it several times can’t get it thru Walmart Joann’s or amazon

There is an updated tutorial on my channel. It goes a little more in-depth on how to construct the mask, how to resize it, variations on the materials, elastic sizes and placements, and optional closures. If you can't get elastic, this new tutorial shows how to do a completely non-elastic version. I think you could adapt the nose wire tube for the chin area to make it hug if you wanted to. But the darts give it a really nice formed fit. You may find you don't need it. Hope this helps:)
