You know we're spoiled with truck engines today when people are complaining about 290 horsepower out of a naturally aspirated v6 being "not enough". 20 years ago you couldn't get a v8 in a half-ton truck that made that much horsepower and no one complained about not being able to tow back then!

I have the 3.3 as well, and gotta say, I love it. Old school trucks did not have this power and if pulling a boat or small RV, it is absolutely perfect for doing that. Also does 0-60 in 7.7 seconds, that is amazing for a truck and this engine is not under powered by any stretch. The gearing of this truck with its 6 speed 2 decade proven transmission, does make it rev high when doing hills. Its the nature of the beast, and this engine is made for high rpm, and that is where to torque lives on this thing. Its simply the gearing, not the engine that causes the high revs, but again, this engine has a higher compression ratio, so dont be fooled. Guess its what you are used too, and keep in mind, the coyote is a low rev engine mated the old 6 speed, so they geared it differently, and the new 10 speed trani, well, they geared that to keep low RPM changes as well. Bottom line, the 3.3 tows over 7000 lbs, and that to me is AWESOME. Nice to see a review on it though, so thank you Ponie 1992

@@axemanfishing2703 I think the 3.3 will work better with a 3.73 rear gear. This truck had 3.55's. For light towing, it'll get by just fine. The coyote is actually a higher rpm engine. It makes it's power up top. Ford tried to salvage mid rpm torque with a different intake than the Mustang. It works well, but the 3.5 eco with twin turbos will out tow any option, imo. A reasonable assessment. I have the na3.5 Ti-VCT, electronics package, tow package, 3:73 gears 6 speed. RCSB. Tow rated 7,400 lbs, payload 1,704. About 10 less in hp and torque than the 3.3. I tow regularly. Supercharged cobalt on a 2,300lb car hauler about 5.5k lbs in steep rolling prairie the trans hunts and pecks constantly. Stays mostly above 3k RPM to powerband. About same mileage as you stated. Pulled uhaul tandem cargo trailer 1,030 miles and averaged 16 mpg at 5k lbs. I assume because of lower profile. This motor has the same guts as the 3.5 turbo, so it’s not straining the drive train, but it does need to stay in the powerband and it’ll run high RPMs all day with no ill effect. I can say that once it reaches peak, any RPMs after that to redline are useless lol. Only had one time where I wished I’d got the bigger motors going from low speed trying to squeeze into traffic with a full load. The performance difference from 5k to 7k is minimal. Trans temp average was about 208 degrees towing. As to the having more hp than the old V-8s, true. I had an old 3/4 ton Ranger with the 390, and my 3.5 has more hp, but those old V/8s had some good torque, and as we know when it comes to towing, torque is king! Why did I get the base motor? A well equipped new truck for towing mostly 5k lbs and below for $25k. I have no complaints. It’ll do what the ratings say. These trucks with the 3.3 are a light duty and in most cases fleet truck. They shine on the empty MPG side and for towing a mower or 2 or a 3500 lb boat. This option fits well for a lot of people that want a truck but drive them like a car. They are great for delivering loads under 1000 lbs that are bulky and large enough to require a truck bed. The rear end in these trucks do make a difference for towing at the cost of the MPGs. I have seen reviews of a 2019, 2020, and 2021 super crew with a 3:31 rear end where people tried to tow 8800, 10,000, and 12,000 lbs when those trucks state a tow capacity of 4 to 5000lbs. Of course those trucks fell on their faces under those conditions. They were never made for that. The people making those videos bad mouther the 3.3 and ford in general. It was comical. For 8 to 12,000 you should just get a 3/4 ton end of story. The Eco boosts are fine and dandy until you blow a fuel rail or a booster and both happen very often from what i can find. The Echo boost use more fuel than a 5.0 wile pulling and a lot of time during day to day driving. The naturally asperated 3.3 is a lower cost and very low maintenance engine as long as you don't try to pull a 9600lb shidder every day or at all. Even with the initial frills of the Eco Boost the durability of the 5.0 is always the best bet. And the 3.3 and 5.0 are easier to fix and much cheaper to fix. Each truck has its place and purpose. Towing 10,000 with a 5.0 or 3.5 Eco Boost every day will destroy either engine in 50 to 60,000 miles, tare up the trans, break the tow hitch or bend the frame. An f250 will tow 10,000 every day and not care. But people tend to try 25,000 with the f250s and they may do it for a wile but you will get the same results as with overloading anything. It is like any other tool out there. Get the one to do the job you have for it.

I personally have a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis which I feel completely safe in. They don't make them like they use too. LoL 😂 I want this truck for it's purpose. I don't like the eco boost engine's because of the maintenance and reliability.
@BackyardBMX732 жыл бұрын
You make great points about the different engines and overall reliability from old to new. For light towing, I think this particular truck would serve well, especially if it were equipped with 3.73 gearing. Thank you for watching and commenting!

It has tons of power and great full millage and don't have to worry about pos turbos going out and never burns a drop of oil like my friends f150 turbo that drinks oil if he pulls a trailer!!!!! And 3.3 has a metal screw on oil filter unlike the 2.7 turbo plastic oil filter garbage!! The 3.5 v6 turbo does have a metal screw on oil filter but the 3.5 has carbon build up problems and uses more gas and requires more maintenance than the non turbo 3.3 v6!!!!!! Still getting 22mpg with 4.10 gears on the hwy!!!

So it doesn't tow good compared to what Chevy square body C10 305? Consider what I half tons of yesteryear could do. I think the f150 3.3 is an excellent little truck when you consider 85% of them just haul groceries and golf clubs in todays world. You can still put a toolbox on one and haul a 14 foot cargo trailer full of construction tools. My coworker does it every day. 257000 miles worth and it's still going strong. And gets really good gas mileage when unloaded.

This isn't a comparison video, rather a review of the 3.3L F150 towing capabilities. If towing often and decent loads, there are way more capable trucks out there. The 3.3L is ok for general duties, but not as a more dedicated tow vehicle.

It seems like you don't know much about cars and engines... When you're towing and you hit a Hill the vehicle has to downshift into a gear where the rpms will be at its maximum horsepower.. And in this instance of the 3.3 V6 that's 5500 rpm so the engine will have to hold that in till you get over the grade.... Just like in my 2013 F250 with my 6.2 gas It will Downshift from 6th gear into 3rd gear And hold at 3800 rpm... Seems like me that you are just nit picking. The 3.3 V6 is 1 of the best engines 4 makes The 3.3 V6 is 1 of the best engines ford makes. I also have a 2020 f150 with the 5.0 v8 and it doesn't tow like my f250.
@BackyardBMX733 жыл бұрын
I know quite a bit about cars and engines. The 3.3L doesn't make the same power as say the 3.5L Ecoboost, so the 3.3 will have to turn higher rpm to climb a particular grade and use a given gear to get that rpm. The 3.5 will most likely downshift to a higher gear than the 3.3 because it makes more power and torque and doesn't have to work as hard. Also, a vehicle towing does not always have to use it's maximum horsepower to climb a grade. That depends on many factors. But, thanks for watching nonetheless.
@Adventureswithmike13 жыл бұрын
@@BackyardBMX73 the 3.5 ecoboost has 2 turbos on it .so there's a lot more power available Throughout the rpm range And a flat torque curve. So you can't compare the 2. The 3.3 is happy to hold the rpms high While climbing a grade..
@BackyardBMX733 жыл бұрын

You're full of it. I tow with my 15' F150 supercrew with 3.5 TiVCT non turbo with 3.55 rear (only rated for 6150lbs) and it does great. Recently had a 7000lb Avalanche on a 24' double axle car hauler (est. 12000lbs) pulling up and down hills and it did just fine. Yes it drops down gears because it's toque curve peaks around 4000 RPMS. I know you are entitled to your opinion, and the 5.0 coyote is a much better motor for towing, but the naturally aspirated V6 engines are fully capable.
@BackyardBMX734 жыл бұрын
I am just stating my opinion based on my experience. I'm sure there are circumstances where the NA V6 engines will pull fine, but for me it didn't do that great. For the record, I don't believe the coyote is best for towing either. I believe the 3.5 twin turbo Ecoboost would outperform them all. But, thanks for watching and commenting.

Cubic inches rules when folks are looking into pick up trucks, vans, suburbans etc. Add to that towing...you need cubic inches, not turbos, not superchargers etc. unless you only plan to keep it for a year or so. Why? small engines with turbos, twin turbos, super chargers etc. will not last as long as a naturally induction engine. Most towing rigs need to start with at least 350 to 400 ft lbs of torque with gasoline engines. Below that, you aren't going to have a great towing rig.
