What’s wrong? Are you not happy with your 2019? I had a 2017 African twin but it’s sadly not here with us anymore.. at least for the moment. Ever since I sold it I’ve been thinking about buying a brand new one AGAIN haha mine was previously the DCT transmission and I was genuinely impressed considering I kept it in its sports mode, it made me feel like I was driving a nice futuristic sports car /boat or cruise ship lmao

From press and Honda releases at launch time it says this sort of thing: "To create a more direct feeling from the throttle to rear wheel pickup, the Africa Twin DCT model has “G” button designed for gravel roads that modifies the control of the clutch system and eliminates the shift lag between gears." Now, people are all saying, why "G"? Why Gravel? I think I figured it out. OK, you want to call it dirt mode? D is taken on automatics with Drive. M for Mud? Manual. S for Sand? Maybe people would confuse it with Sport mode. I really believe that Honda was trying their best to make sure that button could not be confused with anything else. In the usual Honda fashion... read "weird".

The redundant lower dislpay is there for when you have your iphone connected to the bike and using car play. A thing to note, you cannot use the touch screen controls while moving even within carplay. You can still use the button controls though. Hoping the android auto update comes to this bike as well, and that they don't require the bluetooth headset to run carplay/android auto. sucks when your headset dies and then cant use navigation anymore. If anyone has any questions, I do own this exact model, and I'll try to answer what I can.

I think people are confusing the DCT with a CVT. DCTs with paddle shifting are used in most supercars including the Nissan GTR, Ford GT, Ferraris, Lambos, Porches, etc. CVTs are in Subarus, quads and snowmobiles and generally suck in cars. With DCT, you can go full manual, and it will shift faster than humanly possible, and will hold gears. The Sport modes, throttle and engine braking make it a surprisingly 'alive' bike to thrash on the road. Between DCT, Rekluse clutches and Speedshift kits, these things aren't going away. The only place you'll arguably find less control is in slow, technical terrain, but once you learn to use the rear brake in place of a clutch, the difference is negligible.

After riding a last years model Africa Twin DCT from a dealership, I can safely say I'll never buy an automatic bike in my lifetime. It honestly was less fun, less engaging, and took away part of the joy of riding a motorcycle. I have my daily driver car that's an automatic that I put around town on. Then I have the classic sports car to blast on the weekend or take to a local cars and coffee. The bike is there for those awesome weather days on those curvy back roads, or a cool trip up north to go camping with some friends. And so far in my years of riding I'd be willing to give up an automatic transmission for those times and do the shifting myself, making the occasion even more special and connected.

Same. The only time I would want it is in colder weather when fingers get numb hovering on the clutch lever, or spending hours in very slow speed uphill sections of track. They dont look all that comfortable to ride long distance cruising but i took my 2017 A.T. with honda's optional lowered color matched seat on a cruise from Indy to deals gap tail of the dragon U.S.129 and slade "the dragon" .. Before i left I mounted up a VORTEK 253C-43 TEETH all aluminum rear sprocket that gives just a bit more ability plunking in low gear on single track deer trails in tight wooded areas (stock is 42 T) and for a bit more traction a Pirelli MT90 SCORPION A/T 150/70 R 18 M/C 70V on the rear and a 90/90 - 21 of the same thing on front that are much better on gravel and dry dirt for drifting smoky mountain fire trails than the " road racing slicks " that came on it!!! Im 70 years old and when my harley dyna is out of gas at 130 miles its time to rest your ass for a while ! But not on this africa twin cuz i can go for about 250 miles and still have enough fuel but past time for a piss break top off the tank and hit throttle with no monkey butt !! This thing rides great ..using a low cut moose racing windshield (

I miss my AT (2017 DCT), but there were a few things I would have changed (suspension was too soft, tube tires, no cruise). The Adventure Sports addresses all of those issues, but I do not like how much bulkier it is than the base model AT. Wish they did the tubeless wheels on the base model, I might get one. Even of they offered a version with a more street biased 19/17" cast wheel setup, I would consider it. Keep coming back to the Tiger 900.

Go to your triumph dealer and get a Tiger 800XC ...they are around 470 pounds dry with 95 horsepower of a version of Triumph's 700 speed triple but with a longer stroke and a high torque camshaft profile ..the engine cases are high pressure die cast done by lotus Ford that gives you no porosities of imperfection with the strength and property of Billet aluminium. And all the internals are made by Cosworth in London. Downside after the engine wears out will cost you half the price of a new bike. My friend beats that all to hell as he just parks it in his garage at a hundred thirty thousand miles and buys used ones with 15,000 or so miles on it for around $6k to $8k and you got 100,000 miles of WFO riding left in it ! And they handle like an XR650R only with twice the power ...on test ride of a 2012 model that was brand new i past a school bus on the back wheel by merely twisting of the wick in 3rd gear along the white river half dirt broken pavement gravel in the turns that runs threw the middle of downtown Indianapolis ...jumped a speed bump in the dealership's back lot and they came ungluded on me and ran me off , got pissed and bought a harley ...get the triumph

They're the equivalent of buying a truck or SUV with 4WD, lockers and crawl control, and putting a ground effects package and low profile street tires on it.
@aaronbehindbars
@aaronbehindbars 4 жыл бұрын
@@sunnyvalejedi I think the 17/19 wheel size is a good compromise. Not everybody needs the off road wheels. 17/19 allows you to run decently capable off road tires without giving up the quicker steering and better front end grip on pavement you lose with a 21 incher. This in between wheel size suits most riders who do a fair bit of dirt roads. Sounds like it isn't for your riding needs, but it makes perfect sense for many. There is nothing wrong with more options.

That’s what I was thinking too...am planning to buy this bike and some reviewers haven’t spent enough time with it before reviewing it. He seriously didn’t know what G mode was for😒. On a adventure bike with G mode I would guess that the G stands for Gravel.

Nothing special there. Just being efficient and applying lane splitting laws which should be the way everywhere IMO.

@@laz1go286 As someone who's never owned a bike yet, "lane splitting" wasn't even a phrase that existed in my small world until the last few weeks as I've begun "bike research." I had no idea it was a thing, just assumed it was someone being an impatient ass. A very unfair assumption on my part I guess. I'm sure I'l come across more stuff that was completely oblivious to me.

First thank you so much for that review. It was so detailed and I loved the way you introduced the bike! good job on that!! Even though it's a marvelous motorcycle I still don't feel like buying it. And it has nothing to do with your amazing review, you just gave me a lot to points to consider about whether I should or not get this bike. For me personally, I prefer the BMW1250GS even though it has some reliability issues now-days and all but I don't know why the Honda's ATs (and some other honda bikes) feel so anemic and weak and has no torque compared to most dual sports adv bikes. Take KTM's 1290 and BMW's 1250 and Triumph etc'.. it's a bit of a disappointment for me. The second thing I didn't like about it is that they took it too much to the "dirt bike" style and didn't give it a nice touch like BMW. I think it's more for people who like to go off road rather than go touring and sometimes go off road. And overall the plastic looks a bit cheap compared to BMWs.. the whole thing just doesn't look like a flagship to me. The Honda goldwing however.. oh boy, surely does!! (Disclaimer: I now ride Honda's cb500x 17 model and it feels as anemic as can be but I love the bike. I am considering to upgrade to the big league in the future).

I still feel like DCT is an answer to a question no one is asking, but since automatics are so much more popular in the US maybe that'll apply to DCT bikes as well.

DCT is superior to manual changing. Much faster and smoother. Never makes a bad shift. Awesome off the lights. You can override it if you want to with paddle controls just like modern sports cars. Next gear you want is almost always pre-selected on the alternate clutch.

@@stevebolton8471 It should be noted though, that the riding experience is most definitely different than a non-DCT bike. Things like walking next to the bike while light on the throttle can be tricky, and also doing pivot turns is done differently. There is no clutch to feather, which is awesome at times, but has gotten me into some interesting situations to say the least (whiskey throttle - oops!) At the end of the day, it really is a nice system and I am glad that my AT is a DCT. I do however, have my eyes on a KTM 790 Adventure R... :|

Ron L Hi, I have never wanted to walk next to the bike using the throttle to move it 😀. Whether you have DCT or not, slow turns should be controlled with the rear brake, never feather the clutch.

None the less it seems to be popular. 67% of Goldwings and 45% of ATs sold are DCT. Honestly Suprised it hasn't taken off in the Supersport market. I feel like a DCT would be superior than a Quickshifter.

The very best speedometer/ odometer was the rectangular analog 90 mile per hour speedometer trip meter on the 1984 xr500r. Unfortunately Honda discontinue manufacturing them. If you ever find one grab it it is calibrated perfectly for a 21 inch front wheel
