To be fair: an africa twin is a lot more bike than most riders. I own a 2016 DCT and it makes me feel really confident and then I watch videos of people riding it like a trial bike and I am humbled again.

Took up riding right when the AT came out in 2016. I waited for it (was originally going to get a BMW R1200GS but I grew up in Africa and loved the original Africa Twin.) So my first bike was an Africa Twin, DCT. I loved that bike so much that when it was written off I replaced it with, an Africa Twin DCT. And when someone rear ended me at a stop light, writing that one off too, I replaced that with an Africa Twin, DCT. 44k miles on the current one (35k the last one, 20k the first one) and I love it. The only thing it lacks (mine is a 2018) is cruise control. I have a throttle lock. Commuting. Touring. Hooning around in the So Cal canyons. You name it, it just does it. I need to get my forks done, but it's been problem free otherwise. The best part (for me:) so many Africa Twin buyers immediately put on off road tires that I can usually get barely used tires for free or nearly free. In my nearly 100000 miles I've paid maybe $600 for 6 sets of tires. And most of that was for shipping. Happy riding mate. Keep the rubber side down.

It's been 33 years since I owned a bike and two days ago I bought a 2017 Africa Twin DCT. Last time I really rode was at Ft. Ord in California. Little nervous, but a good kind if nervous! Great video. Only a veteran would call it 550 cord. 🤙

Legit video. I just purchased my 2018 AT Adventure sport yesterday!!!!!!!!!! I haven't ridden in about 30 years! hahahaha! Hopefully I don't kill myself, frankly, I'm 51, soon to be 52 and I figured, screw it. 10 years from now(if I'm still alive) I know I'll be glad I did it!! I greatly appreciate your input. It's a HUGE help with my confidence. I have ridden it locally here in SoCal last night and today. Lol. I love it, but I have to admit, I'm very intimidated by it! After 30+ yrs of off road/dualsport riding I was 100% against DCT. Then I bought a 2018 AT AS DCT and I'm sold on the DCT. Not ideal in every situation but overall love it....at least on a big bike. On my Rally I enjoy having a clutch.

Lifelong street bike owner Harley's, Indians, sold my last Harley within the last year and because of life's twists and turns have become super excited about dual sport bikes and looking to be a new owner of an AT real soon. My wife & i enjoy jeeping and overlanding already and the dual/sport/adventure bikes have given us new excitement to look forward to. I was already sold on the AT for many reasons, also that my wife and I ride 2 up on some occasions and the AT/AS seems to have all the good points I'm looking for in that regard. As far as the different add-ons, as a newbie to the dual/sport arena just wanted to say how much I appreciate the time and effort you put into this video. Great video..i got the 2018 here in India...absolutely love the bike and can't stop being amazed at the dct...such an amazing piece of tech...I got a full system akrapovic done and the bike just behaves so different now...the sweet spot is at 5 k rpm...uff...takes off like a naked bike...and recently got the Saddlemen seat...I found the oem to be very uncomfortable...love the AT...and looking forward to travel the world on it...post this pandemic

I know this is an old video but I had to comment, great content man. I recently purchased my 1st bike which is a 2022 AT Adventure Sport ES DCT. I love all the rider modes and configurable modes. The DCT was a must because i have a left foot drop which does not allow me to shift a regular bike. So far I couldn't be happier with the bike, it is a bit heavy for someone who is 5'6" with a 30" inseam but I'm getting more comfortable with every ride.

Great video with honest opinions on everything. As soon as the 2023's are released here in Canada to order I am ordering my own AT Adventure Sport with manual transmission. I'm old school and old. lol. I have never liked anything resembling an automatic transmission in anything I've owned from my big trucks to bikes. I have been riding for 38 years, shifting is engrained into me, I don't think about it, I just do it. Especially true in critical situations, the DCT would probably make a poor situation worse in my case. However that all being said the AT is an amazing motorcycle. I had the luck of using a friends for several days and it checked all the boxes that I want in a bike and then some. Bike insurance here is rather expensive so I seldom have both my current bikes insured at the same time for that reason. An Africa Twin will take the place of both of them very will. I'm so looking forward to next year and a new bike, I just hope it arrives in a timely fashion for next years riding season.

Great review. For the valves I wouldn't say its 1 in a million shot, you can stretch the interval, but I would definitely have them checked at some point (more so if you plan on keeping your bike a long time). And that is clearly the most expensive maintenance on this bike. I put 30000km on mine and before the valve/filter/spark plugs, it has only needed gas oil changes and tires, very reliable. Also I'm surprised at your height that you like the stock seat, I'm 6'1" and the slope on it was unbearable after just 1h of riding...most tall riders will buy a taller seat (like the Rally Concept Seat).

I'm fortunate to have multiple motorcycles in my garage. The one with DCT (XADV) brings the most pleasure and gets more use than my other bikes combined. If I were to to reduce to one bike it would hands down be a model with DCT.

Would highly recommend the Kaoko throttle stabilizer to enhance your experience on long tours.

Nice review. I just got home from a 2,000 mile-ish adventure on my 2009 XR650L, from Clarksville, TN (North of Nashville) through MA BDR Sections 1, 2, 3 and back home. The XR was flawless, but I bet my butt would have been much more comfortable on an AT. ADV Riders... I am new to the off pavement motorcycle world and I will tell you that you don't need to spend $15k-25k to get adventuring. My friend's 1989 Transalp and my XR650L each rolled through the 2,000 ,mile journey with no problems (except a tire on the Transalp and a busted petcock on my Acerbis tank (fixed with a chin of old innettube) after a fall).

Thank you very much for a great, very detailed and original report on this incredible bike. I'm at the point of getting rid of my previously loved 2014 Multistrada that is falling and breaking down apart due to dubious Italian 'quality'. never again - Japanese all the way for me now. Multi is 150HP but nowhere near Honda reliability and build quality. The only bike that looks able to replace it for me is the AT1100 with DCT. A 30% power drop compared to the Multi but, really, I don't often use the full power. I hear they're releasing a SUPERCHARGED Africa Twin late 2023 as a '24 model. The mind boggles, I will wait to see what that one's all about before buying! Thanks again . . . cheers from Sydney Australia.

Thanks for watching all the way down in Oz. I have never been on the Multistrada though I’ve heard great things but I do really love my AT. I feel like it is a great middle ground utility bike. There isn’t much it can’t do but you just won’t get it performing extraordinarily well in any one section. The good news is that as a rider, I am not performing well in any of those sections either so we are FAR more likely to hit my ceiling for anything long before the bike’s. Awesome. Extra power for passing. Sounds ok. but I've never tried, cruising at 55 or so, or at 75mph, passing others on dirt roads. Personally, I enjoy riding at a speed I enjoy the views along the trip. It's rare I want to do the fastest time from one point to another. Honda rider here too.

Every experienced rider I know was skeptical at first, but most of the best off road riders I know fell in love with the AT DCT system for off roading. You can stay standing and have gears change appropriately, you can customize the shift points in User settings, and for super technical stuff all your attention can go to gas, brake, steering and weight management because the thing never stalls. It can get sketchy if you accidentally throttle up while manhandling the bars, but it doesn't take long until that's just not an issue.

Thanks for sharing. Do you notice the lack of the pillion seat when riding? I was looking at the AR pillion plate for my AT. I also have the AR crash bars as yours, and also fitted a Honda centre stand. Think about a throttle lock. I have the kaoko. I also removed the pillion pegs and found strap plates to fit the holes.

Even when I slide pretty far back on the seat as a tall rider, I never have an issue with the pillion seat being gone. I am a big fan of the AR plate and tie down option it provides. I have a cramp buster that I use very rarely if I am gunning it across Kansas or something. I had a Kaoko on my last bike and wasn't happy with its performance. I don't really know how much use I would get out of a throttle lock on my bike but it is always an option especially for the BIG trip in 2023 to Panama. I do like those strap plates to replace the pegs. I was going to machine my own to customize it a little bit. Maybe a fun winter project down the line.

2018 AT DCT I had my suspension serviced and set up by a specialist, the rear shock had air in it. Different riding experience now a lot less spongy.

Very nice review of the AT. Honda definitely hit a home run with it. Being that 99.9% of my riding is on road, I opted for V Strom 1000xt Adventure, which certainly is more road focused. I'm thinking about putting a set of the GPS tires on, and a skid plate. After a year, I'm getting a little more adventurous with the bike. Greetings from Pennsylvania, Rich S.

That is awesome. The GPS tires will open you up to a lot of other options for sure. I don't know if you have heard about the MABDR (its right in your backyard) but you could definitely run that with new tires and have a really great time. There are some expert only sections that might be good to skip over but the route is quite exciting even without the super challenging elements. Cheers 'Be Gone'. Great vid, very informative - have some new ideas for my rack builds etc, after watching this. The DCT is something I might consider next for various reasons. Currently 4 weeks into 2016 AT ownership (Non abs, Non TC). Have you looked into a hydraulic rear brake for the left handlebar? I'm thinking if I go in this direction a hand-operated rear-brake could open up all sorts of riding benefits.

I’ve heard all about that option but never really considered it for myself. I think it has huge advantages in extreme terrain but I’m hoping to keep my off-road riding relatively tame for the next little bit. I went WAY over my head in Utah and can’t imagine going that crazy again. The DCT is a really fun option and just makes riding almost too easy.

"This is a lot more bike than I am rider". Words many riders should be aware of. Well said. I have the 2020 ATAS DCT and have had some issues with "unintended acceleration". I believe it may have been caused by wearing gloves that were a bit too long of a fit. Have you ever had this issue? It has never happened when I wore tight fitting gloves, unfortunately tight gloves offer far less protection but better than smashing into the car in front of you in heavy traffic or running over a gas pump. After more than a year I still have trouble doing a tight U turn on this big bike. Other riders can do it, but it takes a high degree of skill and maybe a bit more confidence and training. At 6'5" you should be trying out for the knicks, I'm surprised you can be comfortable on the bike, especially standing. Thanks for the tip on the wire being severed. I'll keep that in mind if something like that ever happens, at least you were still able to somewhat drive the bike after. I wouldn't call the AT 1100 a beginner's bike by any means so saying "there's nobody that can't easily ride it" is a bit of a stretch. I use Dunlop Trailmax Missions and I think they are a fantastic all-round tire. I feel confident both on wet pavement as well as in those dodgy mucky soft construction zones. It looks like yours is a 2019, which is a completely different bike really so maybe my input is moot.

Love mine, but remember that the gas tank is large (25 litres) and a full tank of gas adds a lot to the bike's weight. Keep it 1/3rd or 1/2 full, unless you're a long way from a petrol pump.

The biggest offroad learning curve for me on my 2018 ATAS DCT has been on steep technical downhill descents. There is no clutch to disengage the engine, hence, and accidental minor bump of the throttle will accelerate the bike in a situation where you want to go slow and stay in complete control of the bike. Once the bike gets away from you on a steep downhill it can be a very scary situation.

That is exactly why I take my hands off the handlebars completely as I go downhill. Gravity does my driving for me and so far, I have always made it down the hill. Sometimes it is on my face, sure…but I always make it down.

THIS! Absolutely. My garage is uphill from a narrow dead end road full of parked cars & getting it down from the garage to where it's anything like normal road riding, it's hair-raising. The urge to grab the brake is pretty strong. Must remember to use the back brake.

1. Set engine braking to max 2. Move right hand to the right up against the hand guard. This gives better control against ‘numbing’. 3. Use rear brake for increased control. 4. Relaxed hands/arms. 5. Practice downhills on tar and then gravel. 6. Enjoy.

That Was a massive lot of information Thank You did you check the valve clearance @ 16000 miles ? i have a 2019 AT DCT 13 670 miles the first year now the bike are a bit top heavy and should have a fully enclosed chain guard to protect the drive chain it is a rather nasty job cleaning, lubricating the chain and cleaning the back-wheel rim 😨

Great video. I’m curious whether you think the pillion rack is necessary with the reckless 80. Since it straps to the luggage rack and the foot pegs, any reason to not just use the pillion seat? Would you get it again?

It is definitely not necessary but I like being able to store stuff under it and additional tie downs when I don't have the R80 attached to the bike. I have been known to leave it on year round and also to take it off and opt for a slicker bike. Those extra pillion tie downs allow me to attach pretty much any bag I want to the tail.

I don't know exactly what you mean about flush with the guard rails but I will try to give you an idea how it sits. The plate is much lower than where the top of the seat would have been. It is below the guards, top and bottom really. It is essentially just a plates width off the plastic below it. You could conceivably place something in between the rails and this is deep enough to kind of corral it in that space, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the review. I'm 6'2" and even with the Rox risers I find myself pulling backwards when standing up rather than relaxed leaning forward. Would be great to see your settings. I also purchased the batzen riser as long distance touring is extremely uncomfortable. You haven't mentioned panniers racks and bags (soft of hard). What do you prefer? Thanks.

I had hard cases on my first bike and opted to go with Mosko Moto soft luggage on the AT. I am a BIG fan of the soft stuff especially as my riding has gotten more difficult and I fall more. I have had a leg under a bag multiple times and I think with the hard cases, it would have been pretty nasty.

Love my 17 AT manual. Got 40k mi on mine and have had no major issues, just the normal wear and tear and also blew both front and rear wheel bearings at 30k mi, which I've heard has happened with other riders. I've done all the work on my bike but am taking it in to have valve clearances checked next week....very overdue

Great review. I have a 2018 ATAS and it is a great bike. That being said the weight is a struggle for me. I am 5'10" and have the bike lowered 1" so that makes it a bit better but at 65 I am not sure this is the right bike for me. Just retired and trying to get fit so maybe that will make a difference but I don't think I will ever have it off road. I have over $9k in upgrades so I have held back putting it up for sale but in the end I probably will and someone will get a great deal. I have had all BMW's but decided to go Honda on the Adventure bike and so far maintenance is much less than the BMW would be. Honda's just go and go without much issues. I also enjoyed watching your Utah BDR, you did a great job keeping it right side up most of the time!

5'9- 235. The AT is calm enough to start on as a first bike. *I DID.* Red, black, and white DCT. I loved it so much that when it got written off I bought another. Also DCT. And again when I was rear ended 4 years ago. If anything (knock on wood) happens to this one i'm getting another one. DCT again. (The DCT is an incredible piece or tech to have. It's one less thing to think about, you can focus more mental bandwidth on your riding.) Or maybe a Husqvarna Norden.

You're bike will love you long time 😃 I also bought a $30.00 can of John Deere Graphite paint, and covered the bottom of my skid plates. Let's aluminum slide over rocks and debris without ripping them off. Super cheap and effective. River boats use it. Love your review, and myself and three buds absolutely love DCT. Thanks eh 🇨🇦

@@ryanmoore686 A combination of the EXTREMELY (Dangerously) jerky throttle from closed, combined with a VERY free-spinning engine made it wickedly hard to control. Additionally, it had the typical ride-by-wire different throttle response in every gear scenario. Weirdly at 80kph in 4th gear it wouldn't accelerate at all. (I was in Touring mode, I think). I'm biased though because I hate ride-by-wire. If you like ride-by-wire, you'll probably think it is just crap, not dangerous. I'm sure if you can afford the new 1100, you can afford another few $1000 to fix it with aftermarket tuning of some kind. I bought a 2016 AT a few weeks after riding the 1100 and love it.

I will agree at lower speeds it was jerky but I got used to it, and then put a tuner on and ya that helped alot, also a sprocket change did wonders. Never had issues in any other gear. 80kph in 4th, also never had a problem

@@ryanmoore686 Cheers Ryan, glad you got your 2018 sorted, what made you buy that over an older model? What are the updates on the 18 that you liked/like? Actually, the 2016 is quite jerky from a closed throttle. It is manageable though and I have a couple of simple fixes up my sleeve. The first was to take any slack out of the drivetrain (which I've done). The next step, when I get around to it, is to take all the slack out of the throttle cable, to the point where it is always slightly engaged. Another trick is to increase the idle-speed. Jerky fuel injection was sorted in the early 2000s (by Suzuki anyway), so I have no idea how, over a decade later, we are dealing with jerky fuel injection again. I imagine it is probably related to getting the bikes through emission standards. The best set-up is carbs, but unfortunately, we'll never see carbs on modern bikes again. Anyway, nothing is perfect and I'm enjoying my 2016 model. The ride on the 1100, was what made me want to try an older model.

Goto synthetic and change oil every 3k-3.5k and you will never need to adjust the valves. Not that you have to, for backup just spend the 20 bucks to purchase oil drain plugs with magnets. (You will need 2, they are about 9 bucks each)

I'm split between the AT and T7 as a long distance tourer + offroad, my impression from reading and hearing accounts from owners is though that the AT has more durability issues than the T7. I want a super reliable bike to do long trips in the middle of nowhere.

Hi Sayuas, have had the AT with the DCT, Model 2017. A great bike, the DCT is awesome, so is the engine (incredible sound). The newer ATs are even better, but it is a huge bike. I have a new (2022) T7 now. The T7 is more handy. By default the AT is much softer, seat and suspension. More comfort. The T7 is better in the turns, easier, you feel that it is much lighter, the best handling bike with a 21 front wheel i have ever tried (stock susp.). The c2 engine is amazing for 700cc. I do not need more bike, because i am the limiting factor not the bike. I feel better on the smaler bike, feeling that i have more control over the bike. Then there is the price: hard to beat the T7 here. What you can do with the AT, you can do with the T7 also. A little less comfort, little more vibs, no dct, but shifting integrates you more, makes you are more active rider. If it is about reliability: the T7 hands down, not because the honda is not reliable. But look on the list of features the honda has (even the low end version). The T7 does not even have ride by wire, no Traction Control, no nothing - great. The seat hight on the T7 is...high, and it is because of the wider seat near the tank, here the AT wins. I love both bikes, and imho this are the best looking adv. bikes, you can't go wrong with either...and: do never underestimate the impact of the right tires, the pirelli scorpion rally str on the T7 is the best tire i have ever had... good luck & save ride!
