If your first thought of adventure touring motorcycles paints a picture of heavy, high-priced models that are often a handful when ventured off road, open your mind to the lightweight 2020 Kawasaki Versys-X 300. Although known for its affordability and entry-level approachability, this small-displacement Versys offers comfort, capability, and convenience to riders of all skill levels.
--
Making use of the 296cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine originally developed in the previous Ninja 300 supersport machine, Kawasaki has given the Versys performance with a load of novice-friendly delivery. When strapped to our in-house Dynojet 250i dyno, the Versys produced a modest 32.3 hp at 11,400 rpm and 16.7 pound-feet of torque at 8,600 rpm, but with an ultra-linear power curve and an admirably flat torque delivery. What’s that mean? Throttle response via the digital fuel injection is crisp with a linear power delivery from idle to its 12,750-rpm redline with flexibility in gear selection when chugging around town.
Light clutch pull and quick acceleration from first gear makes pulling away from traffic lights easy and predictable, even if the Versys requires very quick work through its six-speed, tightly spaced gearbox. In fact, the overall final drive gearing is short for the Southern California rat race. The Versys spins at a dizzying 9,000 rpm at 70 mph in top gear with little passing power left in reserve. A quick modification to a taller gearing will make for a more enjoyable riding experience, and might eliminate the desire for a seventh gear. In truth, the small-displacement package can be outgrown quickly, which raises questions as to why Kawasaki hasn’t adopted the beloved 399cc parallel twin seen in the Ninja 400. Is a Versys-X 400 in the future?
A comfortable upright rider triangle and relatively tall windscreen provide a comfortable pocket to log miles. The only wish? Having adjustability to the windscreen position might offer a shade more wind protection. The reach to the one-piece motocross-style handlebar is relaxed while providing enough leverage for tight corners, and the footpeg position combats cramping while remaining in a somewhat aggressive stance. At 5-foot-7, I find the relatively low 32.3-inch seat height helps navigate slow-moving traffic with an easy reach to the ground.
The Versys encompasses a delightfully neutral on-road handling too. Riding on somewhat-aggressive IRC Trail Winner GP-210 dual sport tires, the Kawasaki is still comfortable and confident on the asphalt. With its 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wire-spoked wheelset, the Versys will support a wide selection of more off-road-oriented rubber, should an owner want to venture the gnarl. At 410 pounds fully fueled (measured with the equipped accessories), it possesses a confidence-inspiring stability yet remains nimble when coaxed. The 41mm nonadjustable conventional fork and preload-adjustable rear shock strike a fair balance of small-bump compliance and big-hit support for normal road conditions, but firmer settings might be appreciated in the dirt.
Our test unit came equipped with add-on components offered via Kawasaki’s accessory catalog. The most obvious addition is the pair of 17-liter hard saddlebag sets ($439.95). From a distance, these bags look rugged and ready to pack luggage in waterproof safety and convenience, but in the real world feel flimsy and are tight on space. A look to similarly priced aftermarket options is well deserved. A set of LED auxiliary lights ($409.95) offer wide-spread illumination at low speeds and extra visibility to traffic, but are highly priced in comparison to aftermarket options. The hand guard set ($115.95) and engine guard kit ($225.95) are reasonable upgrades should you plan on off-roading the Versys. Our Versys also came equipped with a centerstand ($299.95) and other small bits.
The Kawasaki Versys-X 300 packs a punch of adventure in a small-displacement, approachable package. Relatively light weight, comfort, and ease of use make this motorcycle a worthy option for less-experienced riders looking to venture into the segment, even if the Versys’ powerplant has grown long in the tooth. Still, the Versys is ready for adventure-not to mention roughly a quarter of the cost of the flagship models you may have first pictured.

I took delivery of my brand new 2022 Versys X-300 on June 7th of this year and it’s going into storage for the winter this Saturday. I’m just shy of 7,000 miles put in this season. It is the first bike I’ve owned. I’m 50 years old 5’11 and 160lbs and needless to say I rode this thing every opportunity I could take. I absolutely love it. Practiced doing slow speed maneuvers almost every day in my favorite parking lot. Commuting to and from work on the city streets of Chicago, jumping on and off the expressways, easily moving through traffic, plenty of power to pass, going up to 101 mph on demand. 85 mph is the sweet spot for me on the highway. Saddle bags and top case - doesn’t matter. I took a trip from Chicago to Minneapolis, MN during the summer and had an absolute blast. Music in my helmet, dancing the whole way on top of the bike. And oh, did I mention the forest preserve roads hidden all around the south side of the city? I’m still in awe that I could explore trails and back roads, have fun on twisty roads going out to Bolingbrook and then do 100mph coming back on 55 to get back home in one riding session. Dude, this is a great bike. To each his own. Happy riding!

I bought a new 2020 Versys 300...put bags and a few goodies on it...I'm 66...I've probably ridden north of a million miles in my life, owning over 30 motorcycles of every genre.....What I find a lot of "younger" riders miss, is just the pure pleasure of riding....with the plethora of bikes available today, affording technology far surpassing most riders needs, its such a pleasure to get back to the basics...another misnomer I hear from many "review pros", is the term "entry level".....the term certainly has a place, but the over use when addressing smaller displacement bikes is, well, amateurish..It's like calling the new Honda 125 trail, a great little entry level scooter, which misses the entire point...I didn't buy the versys 300 to race, jump, impress or intimidate other bikers...I bought it for the pure simplicityof the ride.....You don't buy 300 Winchester mag. to go rabbit hunting...And you don't equate a smaller caliber fit for the hunt as, "entry level".....Same with motorcycles....The jeep as well as the winnebago both offer their own unique purpose in travel....But do I call the jeep entry level because its missing the kitchen and bath?.....Enjoy the ride people.....Class dismissed...

I agree, I own one. As long as you understand it and ride it within design intent it's great. I like mine with the stock gearing but If I had freeway commuting or long straight highway travel in mind I'd up the gearing just a bit. It corners great and I'll take it on most any road paved or unpaved.

"People will always want more power." More like people will want to not need to be in 3rd gear to go 50mph, or ebtter yet, have to switch to 2nd gear only at 20mph like shown in the video. Just as well, it's also safer for a rider to be able to keep with flow of traffic, 75mph or 80mph at 9k+ PRM? yeah, no, that's not wanting more power, that's wanting to have a bike that is safe to use on main interstates. Just as well, it's not exactly good for the engine to be spinning like it's about to take off /JUST/ to reach 75mph or more.

I own this bike (ABS model) and I'm a commuter. Most folks go 1 up on the c/s sprocket to improve gearing (taller). This is a perfect city bike and excellent for roads up to 60 MPH. It is not the greatest highway bike (under-powered). Riding 50 mph gas mileage is 75 -80 mpg (IMP). Riding 75 mph in headwind gas mileage is as low as 50 mpg (IMP). The seat is hard and uncomfortable on a long trip...my experience. All in all, for a commuter, this bike is tough to beat with all the storage options...tail rack, side cases. I've ridden this thing with groceries, golf clubs, hockey gear...'nuff said.

underpower? I dont know how they drive in the US but here in Australia the max speed is 110kmph (65mph?) and bike can do around 170kmph (105/110mph) so yes its not a rockect but does more that what you are legally alowed, and pwer enough to get into trouble if you want!

@@agustinmorquecho7781 Good point - depends where you ride. I took my bike loaded with gear and golf clubs on a fast (120 km/hr speed limit) mountain highway and I had to keep the throttle pinned just to maintain 75 mph when going uphill. Plus it is underpowered in some passing (overtaking) situations. But those factors only come into play if you choose those roads. I don't anymore.

@@agustinmorquecho7781 in the US people drive 75 and 80 mph quite often. Even though posted speeds vary from 55 to 70mph. The problem with this smaller engine is when your doing 75 to 80 it's revving so high you can feel the engine under your seat like it's buzzing into you. You also don't have a lot of power for passing at the higher speeds. Bike tops out at about 95mph.

Have a 2017, use for 100-200 mile back road day trips, some dirt/gravel roads but rarely on 2 track trails. It is perfectly suited for any ROAD, as advertised. Many others change gearing on this bike by adding 1 tooth countershaft sprocket (same as dropping 3 on rear) as the reviewer suggested. I like the factory gearing and don’t mind cruising at 9,500 rpm when I do get on the interstate and I don’t mind shifting through an intersection. I don’t want higher gearing, would add teeth to rear for lighter front end and more Umph if I changed the factory gearing. Each to his own. With factory gearing, it’s blast to redline 4 gears and only at 80mph after you shift into 5th and ease off the throttle great little bike, great bang for the buck! Nice review!.

I just purchased my almost new 2017 Kawasaki X300 Versys on Monday of this week. It had 1540 miles on the odometer and looks absolutely brand new! It was delivered to me by the original owner on Tuesday April 13, 2022 which is the first day that I rode my new motorcycle. The previous owner rode it to my state so that he could rest assured that I would register and title his motorcycle before he turned it over to me. First let me say that I am 68 years old. I am 5-10" tall, weigh 269 pounds and I have a 29/30" pants inseam. I looked all over for specifics on whether this motorcycle would be a good fit for me. I knew it was tall with the seat height at 30.9". But would I fit this motorcycle well. I already had a bad experience owning a 2002 BMW R1150GS that was a huge machine, a real monster. That BMW proved much too tall and heavy for me to safely handle so I sold it right away. I replaced that BMW with a 2001 R1200C Pheonix which proved much more manageable with it's seat height of a mere 29.9". But it is a 1200cc machine which means it is VERY heavy! So I bought a little Honda Grom which proved to be so much fun that I thought to myself, "wow, look at what I have been missing." Then I discovered a Blog online where a girl named Noraly is riding her 2022 Honda CRF300L from South America to Alaska. She calls her site "Itchy Boots" where she posts 3 videos per week on average. After watching her great adventures for a couple of months I decided that I must have a motorcycle just like hers. But then I discovered that the Honda CRF300L is nearly impossible to acquire right now unless you are willing to pay $2,000 over MSRP. Yikes. That is when I discovered the 310 BMW and the X300 Kawasaki Versys. I went with the Versys for several reasons. First, it was availability. Next was value and finally after watching many reviews on KZbin I liked the twin cylinder water cooled engine making 40hp. So I bought one! I have ridden it 60 miles so far. This is what I can report. First, it IS TALL. We lowered the rear shocks to the lowest factory settings and now I can almost flat foot the motorcycle. It actually seems manageable although I almost dropped it going up the ramp into my shop today. Scared me a bit. The motorcycle is whisper quiet. I like this because my Honda Grom snarls like a mad dog with it's aftermarket Vance & Hines pipe. Really it is too loud. But the X300 has a very nice exhaust note. I do not plan to change this. Next, This motorcycle handles beautifully. The ride height seems tall but the bike is so friendly in every situation. I just love my new X300. Finally, this motorcycle is geared very low. Extremely low. But I guess Kawasaki wanted it this way. I go through the gears to find that I am in 5th at 37mph lol. I hit 6th at about 43 mph and that is the last gear. It seems like it should have a 7th & 8th gear lol. The bike redlines at 12,000 rpm. Whoa, that makes it a screaming machine. When you ride 65mph the engine turns 7,500 rpm. This is very alien to me and seems insane. But there is tons more throttle left after that, all the way to 12,000rpm. Amazing! This bike gets 51mpg so the high rpm must be efficient. I researched re-gearing the bike but you cannot alter it very much without disturbing the engine's code(s). For this reason I plan to leave mine all stock. Finally, the seat is very hard, most uncomfortable. I rode 40 miles today and my Fanny wanted off of this torture device. I guess I am spoiled by the Corbin Seat on my BMW R1200C. Finally, my biggest concern was, "will this motorcycle have enough power to haul my fat butt around lol". Yes it does! The low gearing is so powerful that this little Kawasaki doesn't even know that I am onboard. I get the impression that the X300 could carry a circus elephant if one was so inclined. I hope this little report will help others decide to buy a X300 Versys. I sure am happy with mine. So lite and easy to handle. That is where the fun is!!!

A must is to change the countershaft sprocket one tooth it will drop the rpm by roughly 600 rpm through out the gear range , it doesnt mess with the ecu or trigger a check engine light and you dont have to shift into second halfway through a turn. Problem solved. The bike is perfect ! 👍

I bought this exact model one year ago and am very pleased with my choice. I discovered the Versys X-300 when the Yamaha XT250 that I was looking into at the dealership was sold. I had compiled a list of after-market accessories that I wanted for the XT. Windshield, gear shift indicator, halogen light. When I discovered the Kawasaki on the company site, I saw it had a good multifunctional display with a fuel gauge, gear shift indicator, 6 gears as opposed to 5 , and a parallel-twin engine as opposed to a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, and ABS. All this for $500 more. I have put 4200 miles on it. The accessories that I had added to it out of the dealership were crash bars, 12VDC power supply, side hard panniers, and a center stand. The exact riding I do is on Arizona's state highways. If I have to go on the interstate for a short spell, no problem. I am only 5'4", so this motorcycle fits me perfectly. Thanks for the review!

I looked at the Versys 650 but it's not as good looking (especially the dash), is heavy, and is quite underpowered considering the displacement. I also didn't like that there was no spoked wheel option. The Versys 1000 is far more appealing. I bought this bike with ABS last October as my first bike. I like everything about it, except high revving at highway speeds. With me on it (6' 4" and heavy dude) it has done the following: 85 to 94 MPH at 11k RPM. 80 to 85 MPH at 10k RPM, 70 to 75 MPH at 9k RPM. 65 to 70 MPH at between 7k RPM and 8k RPM. The book recommends "not riding aggressively" after the break-in period, and to keep it at around 7k RPM, but that only gives me under 70 MPH which is intimidating with all the vehicles flying past me. In my city I have to use the freeways if I want to get anywhere, so I have to keep it screaming at between 9k RPM and 10k RPM to keep up with traffic. I worry that keeping it at those high revs all the time may eventually have a toll on the engine, although it never overheats and the check engine light never comes on. The fan always works when stopped at traffic lights. So, everything is working great on it, but I simply worry about the high revs. Otherwise, it is a very comfortable, reliable and forgiving motorcycle. Very easy on beginners too.

Just starting to acquire a few scooters and bikes late in life. I'm 6' 7" inches and the BMW G310 GS I picked up may need a seat modification to feel comfortable with all the long legs looking for a place to plant comfortably. Was wondering if you made modifications with your frame to fit properly? I have ordered the 40th year edition BMW 1250 GSA which is being built right now but even that may need some mods for people like me. Thanks!

I got a 2018 for my daughter. She's getting out of motorcycling, so I've been wondering, "What am I going to do with this thing?" So I rode it a few times just to get an idea of what kind of bike it really is. I haven't done it yet, but I'm really thinking of selling my KLR650, as I find myself wanting to use the X300 more often. I find the X300 is easier to ride on dirt roads and fire roads and is smoother and more comfortable at speeds over 60 mph. Even with the stock tires, I've found it more confidence inspiring on sand and loose gravel. It feels waaaaaay lighter than the KLR, lighter than the specs would suggest. Maybe it's the lower center of gravity and just the fact that I can flat foot the thing. So I think I'll keep the X300 as a commuter/light-weight ADV bike and get rid of the KLR650 to make room for some 250-400 cc dual sport or enduro for when I want to go real off-roading. I wouldn't do that on the X300 and when I tried to on the KLR650 found that I wasn't good enough of a rider to handle that big pig off road.

@@NSB25445 at the speeds you mentioned in your other post, 110kmh and a combined weight of 140kg, you'd want to get something with quite a bit more power. Short, relatively slow riding on flat ground is okay. My 15 year old daughter will sometimes ride on back of the Versys, but only to ride 7 miles to school on speeds below 80kmh. I don't think the Versys X300 is a good bike for two up on mountain roads unless the rider is a real light weight and the passenger is a small child.

Nice bike, I love the front guard and auxiliary lights as options. I would like to see this tested on a two lane trail/OffRoad, etc. I have a feeling the tires may be too pavement biased for dirt trail usage. I was distracted that Michael was always racing along in the left lane even when no vehicles were in the right lanes. In my state we are asked to stay in the right-most lane except when passing. Please spend some more time placing the camera so we can hear bikes upon startup, and to hear the engine notes. At a dealership it is so hard to see if you like a bike just based on it sitting on the showroom floor. I like to hear, look over and feel the seating position on a bike before I will consider purchasing it. The more basic the information about a motorcycle, the better. Would be great to start every commute video with the same type of feature/controls/look-over for each bike. Thanks. Keep them coming.

Good video I have one and put 33liter Givi Trekker side bags on a lot more room and the racks are much more solid, also when with a 14 front sprocket helps on the highway and still very good for the type of off road I do, Also have a 46 liter top case I use to put my jacket and helmet in when not riding. Hear on the island the speed limit is 90 KPH so more than I need for touring but mostly stick to the back roads and gravel roads witch are 80 KPH I also went with a lager wind screen from Givi. Heated grips and center stand hand guards and engine guard with smaller LED lights Think the stock ones look too big for the bike. Love this bike but it would be nice with the 400 cc engine, But I am betting a DR 650 for more off road and putting a 20 liter gas tank on it, to use for more off road riding. The more bikes the better. Also no wind screen on the DR 650, so will get to feel the wind on my chest great for those hot days. I do not have any problem with the clutch feels great to me, on and off road.

After owning one for a while, I can say they are extremely reliable, well-built, light, and simple machines. Probably the closest you will find to a solid 70/30 split of pavement/dirt bike. My biggest issues with the Versys were the looks and the top speed, which, for me, seemed to be 136-ish KMPH. That's just where it sat in 6th gear pinned, near bouncing off the rev limiter on a flat road. So be warned, while it is a great and cheap beginner bike it may leave you wanting more very quickly if you do more pavement riding. Passing a semi-trailer on the trans-Canada at 120 was butt-clenching, to say the least, if not impossible at some points. I ended up selling my Versys very early on to opt for a dedicated 660 naked road bike and a second dedicated dual-sport or straight up dirt-bike.

this is probably my first choice of bikes to buy this year, fingers crossed loot situation works out for me, its been a long few years since i lost my last bike in a fire, along with absolutely everything i owned, except very luckily my little dog buddy( but yeah, all my personal and business/work belongings, quite literally all... good times. i digress). anyway, yeah, after going through all my potential options, the '22 versys x 300 is the bike for me, especially with the colors of the ' 22 version being aesthetically pleasing as well, imo... as for your review, you seem to spend an inordinate amount of time discussing whether this bike or is good for hwy riding due to the gearing, which perplexes me entirely, because kawasaki didn't design it to be primarily a hwy bike... they just made it so it could hang if needed to hop out on the hwy here and there, unlike most of not all of the other lightweight adventure sport bikes that are singles... also, highways are so horrid of environments for riding bikes and too often, reviews seem to spend so much time on hwy riding, which is always baffling to me, cause there is nothing desirable about hwys at all. overall, as a class of roads here in the states, they are excruciatingly boring visually and often packed with traffic, extremely monotonous by design and totally exhausting a riding experience. at that, they are also completely uninspiring and flat out dangerous at times... cufk hwy riding. haha, now that i think upon it, it seems like you rode the x300 in your vid entirely on exactly the types of roads i go out of my way to avoid in their entirety if possible, but hey, if that's where you like to ride, i understand your ambivalence about the bike... however, despite all that, srsly, thx for the video for sure anyways, genuinely.

I tell you all three have their place. Versys is the most fun in the twisties and best for commute to work. KLR is most comfortable and fun tractor like experience. VStrom is my favourite when covering long road trip distance. CRF is the one I take for a day off road. Best part is they can all do everything, so when I’m in the mood for a specific engine /weight I can in complete comfort. Everyone says why not just have one bike, I think owning a few that cost less than some fancy adv bike also helps keep it interesting. I don’t see myself selling any of them any time soon. I’ve owned many fancy new (at the time) fast bikes but I simply don’t feel as connected to them. Not as engaging. I tend to sell them with in 6 months.

I wish it was a bit higher off the ground and had a better skid plate. It would make up for a lot of the lack in preformance.

Another segment this is far is older experienced riders who just don’t have the ego for the big BMWs, etc. I’ve been riding 58 years and this model is absolutely a perfect all rounder. The only thing it won’t do is high speed interstate. Everything else it’s perfect.

Good review. I have ridden the bike and really like it BUT why oh why not the 400 engine then would buy one tomorrow.

Awesome bike. I just wish they offered tubeless tires as an option (spoke wheels or cast, for my needs I don't care which). Maybe a slight weight reduction (given the power range of the motor), but this is being nitpicky. Awesome bike, without much competition (other than, perhaps, the Honda CB500x).

Tubes hold their pressure longer...need only check once a month instead of every few days

@@kd350 I've found exactly the opposite to be true. I need to check my tubes every day before a ride (which isn't a bad practice, but gets old).

To be honest, its a perfect bike for every aspect expect just lack power for open roads. Ohlins really improve the handling without sacrificing off road capability. And.. i ended up getting myself a 2017 CB500X

I’ve used mine off pavement alone rough two tracks and a lot of dirt roads. The gearing is great for off pavement but too bad 6th isn’t a bit taller. The front suspension does bottom out easily on ruts and other obstacles. Overall it’s a great bike so long as you enjoy it within its design intent.

I had one (2020 non-ABS) for a couple of months now: the ABS model lacks front break feel, but the non-ABS one feels perfect, with plenty of bite from the beginning of the pull; also, I live in a higher altitude place (2200 meters/7300 feet) and the short gearing is great here (at sea level, it feels kind of short, though). Usually ride with a pillion, on the road, and dropping two cogs to overtake is almost a must at pretty much any situation, but it pulls great above 7000 rpm. Vibration smoothens between 8000 and 9000, so you might want to keep it at that rpm range on the highway. Top speed so far has been 160kph/100mph, and it feels really planted even at those speeds. It also corners really nice! Cons: front light sucks! (considering LED or halogen at this point). No idea how it goes off-road yet, but will try it soon!

Recommend halogen, as LED to long in rear and won’t allow rain cover. I tried it ; switching to brighter halogen.

Can I have the power and comfort of a V-Strom 650, the fuel economy of a CB500X, and the lightweight packaging of the Versys-X300? I think the reviewer made good points but kept trying to tell the bike that it had to be something else.

Yeah that's the problem. You can't change the gearing more than about 7% or the ECU has a conniption

I have been comparing this bike with the CB500X for a first learner bike. As of yesterday, local dealerships are quoting this bike approximately $3000 less than the Honda. Though I supposed the difference more is noticeable on the Interstate highway. This bike looks like a better buy.

I have been comparing too..went to my local dealership and they had 4 in stock. Has me considering it with the idea of getting one for a better deal than a cb500x that has been elusive to even sit on.

Yeah, the bike you buy really depends on where you live. The Versys-x 300 looks like a very usable Northern Cal. backroads bike. Lots of poor to gravel roads on both sides of the Sacramento valley (and north of Redding) where this bike would fit well. First gear sounds about right for starting on an up hill dirt road with the bags and rack full of gear. Bags DO look awful though! Up here 45mph is 'flying'" Redpawdave, Red Bluff
