2020 Kia Stinger GT Review - Behind the Wheel

For people who say, “it’s just a Kia”, you’re showing your ignorance. This car was designed by Peter Schreyer formerly the head of design for Audi, and engineered by Albert Biermann, the former head of BMW’s M Sport Division. This is effectively a German designed car, with a huge list of features that simply aren’t available here in the Philippines from BMW, AUDI or MB, without paying three or four times the price. It’s the reason it was the winner of multiple Car of the Year Awards in 2018 and 2019. It’s chassis was tuned at the Nürburgring, something Ford can’t claim with the Mustang. It’s as fast as a Mustang GT, but far more practical and a lot safer. Mustangs have poor crash survival and have only a 2 Star rating in the new EU safety rating system, while the Stinger gets a 5 Star rating. Also, Kia and Hyundai have been in the top ten in JD Power Quality and Reliability surveys for the last five years, right up there with Toyota and Lexus, while Ford has been slipping below average. On top of that, check out where Audi, BMW and MB are in those surveys, clawing their way back up from the bottom. The features in the Stinger, like cooled seats and blind spot monitoring aren’t even available in the European brands here, until you get up over 8 million pesos, and only BMW has a warranty that can match Kia’s. Only a fool rejects this car because of its KIA badge. True enthusiasts know what this car is, and what incredible value for money this is. I applaud Kia for making it and for Kia Philippines bring them in here. The Korean brands are on the rise, and Genesis is challenging the Europeans and the Japanese luxury brands and will be the top of the heap soon.

Excellent review and enjoyable to watch. I absolutely love mine. Best car I have owned and I have had some fantastic cars in the past including a Merc. A couple of small points. The gunmetal you speak about is actually real black chrome. This thing is super quick. It is claimed to get from 0-100 in 4.7seconds. There are clips where people have done it in 4.2 seconds and some claim they have done it in 4 seconds flat. That is supercar territory. I have driven this on long trips here in Australia and got 675 kays before filling up. The gauge claimed there was still 75 kays available which is not bad for a 60 liter tank.

How is it not practical? I daily drive my 2020 Stinger gt with no problems. It has awd, which comes in handy in MN, also found out that it'll carry just about the same amount of groceries in the rear as our Jeep Grand Cherokee, the rear shelf is super easy to remove.

@@iamgosa oh, I gotcha ya. I love the car so far, only a few nitpicks. I understand that they had to do something to justify the different trim levels but I paid 36k out the door for my awd base gt. Couldn't even get a sunroof for that price. Kinda crazy when you think about it. At the time, had to step up to the gt1 to get a sunroof, which was over 40k, more than I wanted to spend.

Nothing makes you feel more pro than doing heel-toe downshifts on turns. Unless of course, you drive on the track. The BMW Supra is just an z4 with a wrap around bodykit. Heart and soul of a BMW. Nothing feels more pretentious and actually disrespects the glory of Supra's of old over-engineered japanese legends. Now they'd be like the germans and their reliability issues.

The Stinger punches above its weight class and feels like a car worth more than the price tag. If you're not bothered that you're driving a Kia, you'll fall in love with it. Pros Its a looker- Long and sweeping, it has the silhouette of intent and subtlety. It is svelte and sexy. Just some fake bonnet vents but they add some styling to break up the monotony of the long hood. Its got performance. 365 HP and 510nm torque may not seem like crazy numbers these days , but believe me, it pulls stronger than it looks. Put your foot down and the back end comes loose. Tip in into full throttle and the surge comes like a wave of torque. There is a bit of turbo lag on tip in but there is instant gratification once the turbo spools and kicks you in the backside. My first was very scary. Then It keeps pulling like its never ending. Down low to midrange is very strong then tapers off on top end. But you'll probably only feel the limits when you're already going straight to jail as the trans upshifts pretty smoothly that it kicks you back in the powerband. 0-100 is a joy to get to. You find an excuse to do it everytime. It handles pretty competently- it has pretty compliant suspension in comfort mode but if you know how to weight transfer you can get it to set on one side before you put the power down to get it to rotate. On sport mode, it stiffens the dampers to make it more responsive to turns but it does feel like the car is going to understeer first before it rotates (the fix is to give more steering input). The ride can be a bit jarring on sport. So custom is the way to go (engine/trans in sport and steering/suspension in comfort). It is NOT a sportscar so dont expect it to be as agile as one (very heavy). Its a GT. Its meant to cover long distances very quickly in relative comfort and be involving to drive along the way. It feels luxe inside (not opulent like merc C63 but more like A45- Luxury at a price-point). Soft touch points everywhere. You have to reach lower than your waist to feel hard plastics. Pretty well kitted out with all the tech bells and whistles. Practical- big boot, easy access as it is a hatch. Rear seats have decent headroom, great leg room but.... Cons No Toe Room especially rear drivers side (sacrifice I was willing to make since I wanted maximum low on driving position). Quiet- "soulless". Engine noise is isolated and exhaust note is muffled pretty heavily. There's fake engine sound pumped in by the speakers but cmon... It doesnt have the thunderous music of a V8. Because it is isolated you will also hear the sunroof rattle- known issue of model 2019 and below. 2020 up they have introduced more spot welds to remedy this. Its a Kia- (can be a pro or con) pro due to lower insurance costs, its a sleeper, warranty. Con due to badge snobs. 3.2 M is german car teritory albeit a slow german car. Lets be real though. To get a german car to even be close to the stinger's specs, you'd have to spend at least double that amount. And people haven't really moved on from the days when korean cars were just entry level cars. At this price point, it has no real competition. The argument can be made for a mustang GT but thats a coupe and if you ever sat in one, you'd feel like you're in a rental car compared to the stinger. Also, on a standing start, the stinger takes it on the straights due to turbo wave of torque down low. And the HP difference only matters if you're a measure-bator. I would highly recommend the Stinger GT to anyone who's looking for a superb GT car thats powerful, practical, stylish, well-priced, well-mannered BUT not afraid to have some fun. :) This is coming from a current owner who's switched from a street spec supercharged 86. The turbo from the stinger really pulls hard especially in sport mode.

That is a fantastic evaluation. I agree with most of what you have written. The bimodal exhaust system is great. I have all vented sound turned off so you only get the sound of the real exhaust. I love that when you accelerate, you hear the growl but when it gets into gear it gets back to being quite. This is great on a long trip.. I too drive it in custom mode with trans in sport, steering in sport and suspension in comfort. Works for me. Agree totally about price. The German cost almost double here in Oz for a similar specced car and the Kia warranty is unbeatable. I guess I am biased but I love my Stinger.

In Australia we have all those features as standard. Mine also has the bimodal exhaust which was done as a limited edition. You can get the bimodal exhaust as an extra which costs. The new models apparently have that as standard. It does give it a nice growl when you accelerate but on a highway it is actually very quiet which I like.

For me,.Besides being a gorgeous fast back! It's just looks too cool to be true and since it's also a gt Pupuwede kona din siyang,.Maitawag na sports sedan Because of it's cool and gorgeous looks,.All over it But yeah,.Abit of a downer for me! Is also the center tunel that's why instead of being a five seater sedan it should be called a 4-seater sedan But,.If ever a young one!
