I've just ordered a Mazda 3 Hatchback Skyactiv-X manual, looking forward to recieving it! A couple of comments: - Hatch looks better in person than it does in pictures/videos. I was set on the Sedan (in Machine Grey) but when seeing both the Grey sedan vs the Red Hatch in person I was immediatly converted, the Sedan looked less exciting, a bit too bland almost in person next to the hatch I thought despite they both are stunning in their own way. - Sould Red exterior with Burgundy Red interior looks bad even if it's an option now in 2020 and you aren't forced to pick Polymetal Grey but it's probably the most fitting color with that option though. Personally I'm just a little more fan of the Soul Red painting in how greatly in varies in tone depending on how the light hits the surface that I'm willing to go with the all-black interior even if the contrasting Burgundy Red inside color had been quite nice, just forget about matching it with Soul Red, it just doesn't work that well (IMHO). - The brakes is a _taste_ thing, I actually prefer linear breaking performance (low initial grip, slowly, linearly building braking performance). After driving like forever with my 2007 Civic Sport which also have the same kind of brakes, every other vehicles brakes feels just off for me and not as fun to use due how precisely you can choose to brake with more linear-feel brakes. It's like an addiction to sit very lightly on the brakes before reaching the crossroads for me because how precise the ability to dial in the breaking is with minimal effort, makes for a very smooth drive. - I'm also about 183cm / 6", had about 2.5 cm of additional legroom space and about 2 cm headroom in the rear seat, can be that I like to sit one step closer to the steering wheel than the avg person perhaps, the rearseat space is about my only slight issue but it was just "barely enough", every one centimetre of additional space for both legs and head had been golden to make it an easier likeable car among working mates. :) It was either the Mazda 3 SkyActiv-X or the Civic 1.5l turbo but in the end I went for the Mazda as the interior already looks so dated in the Honda (needs an update badly), exterior design is also much nicer on the Mazda and overall driving feel is better despite lack of turbo for my tastes, I got the feeling the Mazda spoke my kind of car language (handling, breaking, suspension) and the centre console NOT being touchscreen operated which is something I personally hate. The torsion beam update is only a con on the paper, in practice it's not for those who are worried about that. The only thing which you kinda left wanting with the Mazda is a turbo and more roomy interior vs the Civic. Would Mazda bring forth a new model, "Mazda 5" I would switch to that in a heartbeat that would be like in-between Mazda 3 and 6 in size (with also hatchback option, perhaps slightly dialed down C-pillar) with more interior room and a Turbo 2.0l Skyactiv-X engine. Rear seat vents as standard in all regions. Maybe more interior color options. Feels like there would be a big demand for such a model. :)

@@grooviefan Finland, the automatic costs like maybe 1300-1500€ more here and manual option is available in all but the expensiest "Luxury" trim. A few "car enthusiasts" like me who might still want manual over automatic for more interaction with the car if price is the same (or expensier) but unlike in US we have to pay less in that case so it's a win-win for those. People that haven't spent any time with a car (reviewers, test drivers) have no idea how to control anything. I've seen so many reviewers bashing cars (not just Mazdas - it's a problem across the board) because they take zero time to learn all of the controls. I can change preset stations OR scan for stations either with the steering wheel control OR pushing left/right on the console rotary control (how tough is that to figure out - pretty intuitive), and you can do both without taking your eyes off the road. You can control treble/bass mix without taking your eyes off the road. You can pick any number of your "favorites" without taking your eyes off the road (as long as you have some semblance of a memory). I've had touch screens in previous cars. I could never control all of these things without looking at the screen.

As a long time Mazda fan, only the top spec 2.5-litre AWD version of this car makes sense. Preferably in a manual, unless you live in a very crowded and huge city. Families should avoid the hatchback, and go for the sedan - or even better, the CX-30 and preferably the CX-5. Or wait around for the CX-50 😸👍 You sacrifice only a little handling for practicality, with Mazda crossover SUVs. With the CX-30, you get a better view and slightly more comfortable seating, ease(ier) of ingress/egress, and the back seating area is brighter and less claustrophobic - you loose those blindspots. Crossover SUVs also hold their value better when the dreaded time to let them go or trade them in comes. On the the diesels, they are only worth it if you do a lot of highway driving. Also, the rear suspension is not as simple as you think - read up on it. This new gen has a lot of work put into it, and the cabin is a very comfortable, quiet and nice place to be in. Seriously, even Mercedes & BMW owners/fans I know, are impressed and might start moving over, cause they see the value. Power/torque figures on paper and even if they are higher, is not as important as you think for real world driving. Band snobbery and Euro aXX kissing, is another thing though 😉 Personally, I like the way the more luxurious 3 and CX-30 has gone, and I hope they keep heading in this direction. It's hard to compete with some other budget Japanese manufacturers, and of course the Koreans and even some Chinese brands now - check out Geely cars for example.

I feel Mazda made a mistake in product planning. I feel if they wanted to take the car upmarket, they should have made the car larger. My assumption is if you increase the price point and up the refinement, you begin to appeal to a slightly older demographic and therefore more people with families. Instead they made the car smaller, which is probably excusable if the car was much sportier to become a viable alternative to sports coupes. But they dialled down the sportiness. Not selling well because of its so-so performance/acceleration. Put in the turbo and give a great looking car the engine it deserves. As it is right now, "Makes a lot of noise, got to be patient with it....eventually gets going" is turning off a lot of the segments demographic.
@marcusmcneal74534 жыл бұрын
Yup. If you’re making a hatch, but not making it hot or even a bit warm, then don’t bother. With the price and the sluggish performance you’re not pulling away people from the Civic, Corolla, or Golf/GTI. This is a beautiful car, but it’s in a no-mans-land for the class. Too small to be practical. Too expensive to be a value. Not great fuel economy. No tuning potential. Who is this car even for? The last gen was so much better. I’d still buy it over the 2020. It was a nearly perfect car.
@marcusmcneal74534 жыл бұрын
2WIREG The non-SI turbo civic sport hatchback makes 180 HP compared to the Mazda’s 186 HP. That difference is negligible because the Civic is much lighter than the 3. The Civic is faster 0-60, gets better acceleration, better fuel economy, better passenger space, better cargo space, and it’s a lot less money. I’m not trying to dump on the 3 because I love them, but other than styling, the Civic has it beat. Now if we’re talking the last gen Mazda3, it’s a better all-around car than the Civic.
@TheSjuris4 жыл бұрын
Marcus McNeal yeah a whopping ,3s faster 0-60. That’s great but most people go 60-70 which is where the extra torque power of the Mazda transmission shines. You need a Type R or SI. Fuel economy is going to be the same with both FWD versions. If you really cared about economy then the Lx version of the hatch gets a lot better. Of course it’s slower then the 3. The 1.5 liter engine needs the turbo to accelerate and make up for the piece of shit CVT transmission. I wouldn’t buy any car that uses that trash transmission. It’s there because it’s cheaper and it gives better fuel economy. Honda should have stuck with the VTeC engine. The base Civic Sedans and coupes all are slower then the 3 except for the SI variant. The interior of the Civic is light years behind a 3. Not even in the same ballpark except for rear passenger space, but it’s still a compact car and not exactly a family vehicle.
@marcusmcneal74534 жыл бұрын
Steven Juris I have the CVT and it’s one of the better ones out there. No fake shifting and a double tap on the throttle launches it pretty nicely. I’ve been able to keep up with cars with way more power than mine because the CVT provides instant torque. And I’d argue the Civic is now longer a compact. It has as much room as my 2016 Rav 4. I fit and entire seat set and interior panels from an E30 coupe in there with room to spare. It’s roomy as hell. Also, not sure why you’re in your feelings on the 3. I said I like the car, but it has limitations for people who want a little more performance and more room.
@TheSjuris4 жыл бұрын
Marcus McNeal the best CVT is worse then the worst auto. The turbo launches the CVT not the transmission. CVTs are known to have bad low end and bad high end torque. Turbos provide the low end torque, neither have high end torque though. Very little extra performance with the fwd 3. You need the SI or Type R to greatly improve it and even then the SI is not much faster then the Sport Hatchback. If your looking for fuel economy then the LX is better. The Civic was my second choice, but there’s no way I’m going to use a CVT or a turbo. Both have much more cost when they get older. Both are better then any other car in the price range. The AWD has limited use for the most part. Considering the CX-30 pretty much costs the same as an AWD hatchback wonder how long Mazda keeps the option. It’s literally the same car. Pretty sure the Civic hatchback shares the chassis with the CR-V so it makes sense that it’s a little bigger. The 3 never had a roomy interior. It’s a lot closer to the Corollas size.

@@tungstenwhizard4361 No I don't believe so. I pull by and observe where I want to park, then angle my car accordingly to back in and just focus on my mirrors. Since I drive a tractor trailer, this is very natural for me because in my big truck there is no looking over your shoulder. You only have your mirrors to rely on.
@tlcpreschoolchelan37023 жыл бұрын
Mirrors, backup camera, sensors - I literally never look through the back window. It doesn't show small children or animals behind you (backup camera). The right-rear door window is the only window I'd be looking through when pulling out of angle or perpendicular parking. Does anyone wonder how semi truck drivers manage? And they are dealing with a vehicle 72 feet long. Back windows seem pointless unless you have no backup camera.
@tungstenwhizard43613 жыл бұрын
@@tlcpreschoolchelan3702 I guess that's true. It's just that my driving instructors always say to look over your shoulder when reversing and changing lanes and I honest to God can't see stuff out the back window due to c-pillars in my family's NX.

I thought so at first but go look at a Toyota Corolla. It is about $24k and is not close to this Mazda3 hatch in any category.
@tlcpreschoolchelan37023 жыл бұрын
@@t.k.morris I agree. I test drove the top trim Corolla hatch first, and when I told the sales manager I was going to test drive the Mazda 3 hatch 6 manual, he told me I wouldn't be back to his dealership. He was right. Wasn't even a contest. I was a loyal Toyota Corolla driver for 33 years ('87 FX16, '03 Matrix) and still have both in my driveway. It's almost ridiculous how much better my Mazda is on every level. And taking inflation into account, I spent just as much on both my Corollas as I did on my 2021 Premium 6 manual Mazda 3 hatchback. Which means I've been ripped off big time by Toyota my whole life and didn't even know it.

I thought so myself until I saw it in person and drove it. Now I believe it looks better than the 2018 model and there is no other car that looks like it to me. That makes it unique and more desirable in my opinion. But I know that we don't all agree or else there would only be one car on the roads driven by everyone and in the same color.
@tlcpreschoolchelan37023 жыл бұрын
It was my biggest concern going in for the test drive. Even after the test drive I was nervous, but I was also driving a car I had never driven before that didn't belong to me. 7 months in, I frankly never use the back window. Driving the freeway, side mirrors rule. Backing up, backup camera. And even if my eyes fail me for some reason, all the backup sensors go off, even if a person is approaching from the side. Semi truck drivers have been driving with no "rear window" for decades, even without backup cameras. And they are dealing with a 72 foot box behind them.
