With everyone seemingly in agreement that new SUVs and trucks are crazy expensive, the sensibly priced Mitsubishi Mirage is among the last affordable new vehicles out there for the working-class. Other manufacturers should offer “value” oriented models, like the Mirage, that are within the reach of most consumers. It seems like every year manufacturers add more and more expensive content to their vehicles which serve to drive prices into the stratosphere and introduce reliability issues. The Mirage is simple, but not barebones. It comes standard with niceties like automatic climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Plus, it has terrific gas mileage, a long power train warranty, and new for 2024, two-years of free maintenance. Mitsubishi has kept the price pretty consistent from year to year, and they tweak the car to keep it fresh and relevant. This is truly an affordable working man’s or woman’s car. GM, Ford, and Stellantis should take a closer look at the how the Mirage gets it so right.

The Mirage was built for narrow and congested Southeast Asian cities. It’s now made in Thailand and the Philippines and I heard they are selling well.

cheap cars are always the most fun to drive for some reason at least to me. I absolutely adored my 1992 Geo Prizm. It was my little island beater car.

These cars are really reliable and parts are so cheap. And they never break down. But do change the cvt fluid every 20k. My aunt has a 15 mirage with 178k miles. She changes the oil every 5k miles and the cvt fluid every 20k. It’s never broke down. And she loves it because it’s so easy on gas. She’s getting a new one and giving her old one to her son for his new car. If you want reliability and good gas economy get this car. Sure the engine sounds loud but it’s designed that way. Mitsubishi has been making these strong 3 cyl. engines for 10 years.

It’s down to old school fuel injection no cylinder deactivation bs and it’s got a timing chain instead of a timing belt

At 6 feet tall I was right at the tail end of this working when I rented it for the 8 days that I had it. My knees were almost hitting the steering wheel some of the time. But heck, it worked and it really wasn't that uncomfortable. But I am also a very lean 6 footer. I weigh 148 pounds.

Your commentary was very polite. This car is tiny. "Small" is an understatement. I owned a Mirage for 4yrs and I fit very comfortably at 5'7". I would imagine a 6'3" driver wouldn't be comfortable. Makes sense. It's first and foremost a city car. That's where it feels most at home. It can do interstate speeds as you proved, but it's going to be a long, loud trek to get there, and at 70-80mph it's NOT more efficient than a much larger car like a Corolla or Elantra, which are far quieter and more relaxed for interstate duty. That little engine works hard. The only reasons to buy this car are its best-in-class MPGs around town and lowest price. Otherwise, spend a few thousand more to step up to subcompact Kia Rio or even a compact car like a Corolla or Elantra. The fuel economy is virtually the same in those and they all drive so much better.

It's an economy car that's reliable and good on gas...Not luxury Not a race car...A point A-B car... Opportunity for somebody to purchase a new or near new economy car well under $20 grand!

Is this car good for long road trips? Like going from New Jersey to Florida?

If you have to, wouldn’t recommend though, not the most comfortable in my opinion.

This seems like the very last of a kind, the econocrap cars that were everywhere in the 90s. Mpg isn’t even as good as some larger vehicles with much more powerful 4 cylinders. The Mirage was not known for reliability as far as I’m aware.

Good god, no. The CVT is an absolute no for me. I had one in a 2015 Juke- I hated it then, and that car had a turbo. In something like this, ESPECIALLY, you need to be able to control your own gears. I love my mirage. I would have never bought it if a CVT had been the only option, however.
