I have PawPaw grove right in my backyard that I never payed any attention to until I was experimenting with a Plant App that identified it as an edible fruit tree hence the reason I clicked on this video to find more information on them.. I can't believe that a good majority of us Americans have never heard of PawPaw yet its one of our few native tropical fruit trees in North America.

Seems like a potentially longer lasting, less labor intensive solution and since plastic is so cheap its probably the same cost if not cheaper.

Cold stratification IS NOT NEEDED FOR THE PAWPAW seed...But the seeds do need to stay moist through the germination period>>>>I bought 25 seeds and put them in a laundry basket full of dirt in a giant see through bag to create a greenhouse effect and they germinated through the winter in the house and I planted the bunch in spring together>>.5 years ago and growing strong...zone 6

Is anyone doing study of why pawpaw seems hard to store? Fruit leathers made from it have to be eaten or frozen. Freeze dried pulp made some of my friends bellies hurt. We make wine and frozen whole or pulped (w/ lemon juice) pawpaw stores fine like that, but not drying for some reason. I suspect 1 or more amino acids are to blame. It seems to go rancid. In researching this, (since this post) I found Neal Peterson saying something very close to this. I understand that pawpaw has more protein than a typical fruit does.

I have several pawpaw trees that have bloomed early for the last few years since I discovered them and the blooms and or the tiny fruit are destroyed by a late 2 or 3 day/night freeze. I honestly don't know how they ever got established but do understand that these are runner's from the larger older tree's. Not sure what but I've got to do something to try and have some of my own fruit. Frustrated in Paducah.☹️

Does the amount of daily sunlight kill small pawpaw's, or is it the intensity of the light? I have some seedlings that get a 1/2 day of sunlight and wondering if I need to shade cloth them under the hot Texas sun. Sheri needs to see my fig tree because she said they don't get very big. My Celeste fig tree is twice the size of the pawpaw trees I've seen. Planted back in the early 80s. The -3 record temps we got in 2021 killed it. I'm starting to get root suckers.
@KYSUAG3 жыл бұрын
Small seedlings could be in full sun part of the day if it is morning sun which isn't as strong, it is more important to have shade from midday and afternoon sun. If the half day is midday/afternoon sun, they should have some shade until they are 18 inches tall. Once they are over 18 inches tall, they can be acclimated to full sun.

Pawpaws are native to mid Missouri, where I am, and 95% of the fruit is small and forgettable. I did see and taste wild fruit from near Overton/ Wooldridge Mo. that was outstanding in both size and flavor. We have several different grafted varieties and many seedling trees and they vary wildly in quality. The variety "Mango" is very good, as is Overleese, Prima1216, NC-1.
@EgyptianQueenTiye2 жыл бұрын
Did you get to taste the fruit variety that you planted? I was able to try what I bought (not expensive though), so I'm hoping that my trees produce closely or the same. I'm also planting wild plants since the seeds are free. The wild fruit taste good enough especially at peak, but not as good as the cultivated ones. The wild ones are much more prolific than the cultivated ones.

Regarding trees from seeds giving a wild card of what they could produce, what sort of "flavors" might one expect? I'd imagine even the original wild version would still be sweet, but very seedy so could it turn out nasty? Or just not perfect?

It is too bad that nobody has thought of juicing pawpaws and making concentrate or freeze-dried or spray-dried powder for selling or remixing with water and containerizing the reconstituted juice in the super markets, or freezing them (prepared of course) and selling them in the frozen fruit section, or canning the prepared fruits. I can't imagine why the only thought that has gone through people's minds is that the shelf life of the fresh fruit is too short for super market sales.
@EgyptianQueenTiye2 жыл бұрын
In the early 1990s a product development specialist from Ocean Spray wanted to experiment with pawpaws. What was needed was to ship one ton of pawpaw pulp to Ocean Spray’s facilities in Massachusetts. But a ton was not possible even combined with other growers of high-quality fruit. If Neal Peterson had been able to supply Ocean Spray, and if they had developed a marketable product, it clearly would have been a game changer for pawpaw as a crop. Dried pawpaws typically cause upset stomachs so that's not an option.
@erichansen36412 жыл бұрын
@@EgyptianQueenTiye Obviously they were not dried properly. There is no chemical/biological reason why a fruit of any kind would not cause upset stomach when fresh, but then cause upset stomach when dried, unless of course the drying process was incorrectly done. Drying a fruit should decrease the likelihood of upset stomach over eating the same fruit fresh. I eat reconstituted, spray dried or freeze dried: Buckthorn Berry juice, Coconut juice, Papaya juice, Lemon juice, Noni juice, Acai Berry juice, Elderberry juice, and Goji Berry juice. I have a large supply of these powders in my kitchen. Use them to make Smoothies.

@EgyptianQueenTiye2 жыл бұрын
@@erichansen3641 This advice comes from several sources. Even the video recommends not to dry them. There may be a chemical/biological reason why it does not cause an upset stomach when fresh, but then cause upset stomach when dried. It is probably because of the slight amount of neurotoxins in the fruit which are not harmful in small amounts but when it's dried, that amount is concentrated. Both KSU and Ockoo Farms would know more about this. In the book, "Pawpaw, in Search of America's Forgotten Fruit" it states that pawpaws do not lend themselves to drying. As an FYI, I dry fruits, herbs and peppers that I grow. The only way to dry it wrong is to cook the item which is pretty obvious. Cooking pawpaws does cause an upset stomach in a small percentage of people but not as much as drying which is why it's not recommended and why you don't see it dried in the stores (because drying would probably be profitable).

What confuses me about Pawpaw is if it's soo good and beneficial, why isn't it mainstream? I own 3/4 acre in Maryland with hundreds of Pawpaw trees. I've only met 2 other people who knew what they are and wanted some. The wife and I are eating them right now 10/2021 but it's the end of our harvest. Even my neighbors and family don't know about them or want any. What's up with that? Heck, apples are a lot less beneficial but everybody knows about and eats them!

One reason I think would be, because pawpaws have very little shelf life, so they never got into the commercial grocery stores, because they wouldn't be financially viable. But a lot of people are finding out about them in the last 2 years I think.
