My local radio club has an annual competition, this year it's to build a working 2 valve radio. I wasn't going to bother but my wife convinced me to enter less than a week from the judging. Will I make it in time and how will it stack up to the competition?
I incorrectly explained the way the regeneration worked in this video. I have pinned a comment to the top which explains how it really works.

Actually there is no feedback via the screen grid. The regenerative feedback is through l1 and l2, coupling the signal on the plate back into the grid. The regeneration control, r3 controls the gain of the valve by varying the dc screen grid voltage, and therefore sets the circuit to the point just below where oscillation would occur.

Hi Michal, thanks for pointing that out, that makes perfect sense, I was thinking of reflex more than regen 👍🙂

I worked on a Pye unit that had feedback from the primary of the output transformer. Clever set up but could stop the receiver from working IF a fault occurred and NOT just because of a fault with the output transformer going open circuit et 😗 It recycled part of the anode signal output through the circuit and grid assembly. Clever. One of the radios in my collection is a 8 band 8 valve Pye radio and complete work over, produced a set that family and friends still love to see / working et.

I built such a radio when I was a teenager. It used a 80 rectifier tube so it could be plugged into an outlet. I purchased the parts from radio row in downtown Manhattan. It wasn't all that sensitive and would squawk loudly if the regeneration was turned up too high. Later I converted it into an AM transmitter using screen grid modulation. It worked well enough to transmit music quite a distance in a dead spot in the AM band using a window screen as an antenna.

Outstanding piece of work David. Congratulations on the win. Breaking news, I now have Bluetooth! Had a new pacemaker fitted last week which uses Bluetooth to download information to IPads and so on at the hospital. Far greater battery life too. Also have a terminal at home so I can communicate with the hospital directly. Still quite sore from the operation (done under local anaesthetic ), but getting better each day. Modern technology! Amazing! Wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Off downstairs now to see what Santa brought Take care Stay safe Cheers Lynton

Hi David thanks for the reply. Well I am still working on the Hacker radio I mentioned a while ago. The initial set turned out to be a bit of a disaster with crumbling IF cores, stripped core supports, a faulty tuning cap that was beyond repair, and an FM board that refused to play. It was only fit for the bin! However yesterday I was given an identical chassis in much better condition so I am still hopeful. Not fit enough to get into the workshop at the moment (and it is far too cold - below zero deg C last night). But as soon as I am a little better the work will continue. Santa didn’t disappoint either, even brought me a new battery drill, and soldering iron! Take care young man. Keep up the good work. Best regards Lynton P.S. Don’t worry about the grammar, it’s only a note/comment. I have forgotten most of the rules of grammar anyway.👍🏻🤨🤣

Hey Dave. Nice radio entry! I'm an American chemical engineer in my 60's but not yet retired. I'm fascinated by your videos. Your skills for refinishing and fabrication with wood, metal and plastic are amazing. I enjoy your ingenuity and trouble shooting skills as well. Thanks for the knowledge and entertainment. I like it when you throw in an odd bit about life in Australia as I've never been there. Also, I'd love to see what your collection has grown to. I'd like to have a hobby like yours but it seems so much easier to watch you and others go through the trials and tribulations with me being electrocuted. It's odd because I've never even thought of old radios since about a few months ago.

So glad you discovered the only correct way to cut glass the clean way. Never try breaking the strip off on the side of the table by pushing in the middle. That always goes bad. The break should start at one side of the scratch and 'run' to the opposite side. Just put something onder the glass, like a pencil or a nail, or a match and gently push on both sides of the scratch. Piece of cake, well piece of glass, actually.

Nice Project, Dave! I had an electronic trainer from Gilbert Toys back in 1958 that would let you build devices from a morse code trainer, to a shortwave radio. It used snap connector wires, with templates to help make circuit building somewhat easy. It used a germanium diode for detecting and a 1T4 for regeneration. I never really had enough cash at the time to buy an expensive 45 volt B battery to use the trainer to its full extent, but got many hours of pleasure using the projects I could build with it. Have a Great Christmas!!

Congratulations on your win, I was hoping you’d win. I couldn’t help but think what you could’ve done with even more time and no rules holding you back, with that said the competition looked like great fun. I hope you have great fun on your time away, I’ll miss your videos, but I’ll just rewatch your old ones until you return. I don’t mind telling you I’ve watched your videos many times, I just find them peaceful and very enjoyable. Thank you for all your hard work and for taking us in for the journey as you learn. Your work is just top notch in my opinion, it’s not that you always have the answers right away, rather it’s the fun you’re clearly having and how you discover new ways of doing things and in turn that new knowledge helps make the next projects that much better. As I’m sure you can tell I like to carry on a bit, but since I enjoy your videos and work so much, and since it’s Christmas time I figure why not tell you your videos have been like a welcome friend in this rather dark and unfriendly year, they’ve been something to look forward to. From over here in Massachusetts, USA, A very Merry Christmas to you and yours. (As a side note, I’m kind of hoping you find some new radios to work on during your time away 😁😁)

never have I wanted to build an AM radio so badly, lol im reminded of the old science books I have from the 40s and 50s where i believe an AM radio is demonstrated as thing you could build yourself, the attention to detail is insane

David, you are either a very skilled video editor, or you are a lot more talented at woodworking and construction than you claim to be. That was amazing! I know radios these days are a lot simpler than the ones you restore, but you built that like you were going to sell those things for profit! Great job! Happy New Year, Mate! Another outstanding video!

What a nice X-mas surprise! A radio inspired by my favorite building in my favorite city! I was born, grew up and lived in the Big Apple for the first half of my life before moving to another big city, Tokyo, 33 years ago. Really liked the NYC cityscape scenes at the end of the video - I miss the place sometimes. Also liked the low-tech but effective wire-tensioner, and I swear I'm gonna have to add a 3D printer to my birthday list now that X-mas is over. Congrats on the well-deserved win!

Thank you Sincerely Yours. The Empire State radio is an Aussie icon radio and fairly easy to replicate in wood so was a logical choice. We visited New York for almost 2 weeks a few years ago and loved it. The 3D printer sits there most of the time but sure is handy when you need it 🙂

This is my favorite video of yours. Thanks. I have watched it several times already over a few months. I found electrical conduit for my coil former at 32mm. I veve a pipe cutter here for metal tube, but it works fine on the conduit too. I have three meters of conduit, so I have a few radios to build with it.

Wow you won the contest!!! There was some interesting competition there that would have made me think close but no cigar. It was a lot of details in your design that got the judges approval of the whole radio. Of course we all saw how much care , thought , and skill that went into building the Tipton Tune Master. Your chassis design and cabinet work is first class! Merry Christmas ! Steve

Hi David.. Wow!...I have watched many hundreds of hours of videos on YT over the years, but none of them has captured my attention like this one!.. As an 'old timer radio ham', this took me right back to me, as a twelve year old, excitedly putting together a handful of components to make a radio featured in the UK 'Practical Wireless' magazine. I'm not going to pretend that my finished products had any of the finesse of yours; in fact most of my radios didn't even have a case at all!....I seem to remember that I liked to see the valves glow!!..... I loved the chassis folding with the timber and the chunk of angle iron. ."Been there and done that", as they say.. What really took me back is when you switched it on....and there was nothing....That happened so many times all those years ago, and not usually with such a simple solution as with your radio.. Congratulations on your win and producing such a great looking radio.. I look forward to your next build....or even, just your next video.. Best wishes.. John.. G4EIJ.. Bristol..UK

Thanks John. I used to look in the back of our radios as a child and wonder how the warm glow of the valves and a collection of tin cans could make sound, I still do! I should get a tiny folder some day 🙄 Thanks for watching John and I'm happy you enjoy the video, all the best in Bristol 🍻🙂
