Yeah, I would for sure go with the medium... my buddy Zac at 5'10" liked the medium better.... the bars feel a bit close on the seated climbing but it really does put you in a better pedaling position... good luck!

I rented one to make sure and decided against keeping it. I prefer my 27+ so the SC HT LT is available for another few weeks. I have a 2021 Tallboy CC 4 XO build and it is a good do it all bike stock, however its perfect after a wheel upgrade. I regularly do 30-mile rides with 5k of climbing. It descends better than all others in the category IMO. Mine came with Raceface wheels that were ok but heavy and slow on acceleration. After upgrading to light weight carbon Rovals I dropped almost 1.5lbs in rotational weight the bike really came alive when standing for power and acceleration. The bike climbs well stock but extremely well after upgrading the wheelset. The only minor knock is that due to the suspension, I feel that using the lockout on long climbs is a must if for efficiency and speed up hills

I can’t say enough great things about the TB. Just picked up the S build and have about 20 miles so far. I’m coming from hard tail for 4 years and was worried about pedaling efficiency. Wow, the TB is extremely efficient, esp on the ups. Climbs and descends like a beast!

Are you still riding it? Just curious if you made any suspension changes. I am building up a new one from frame up and debating going with Fox 34 (GRIP2 damper) 140mm vs 120mm and the new redesigned 2024 Fox Float shock. Hearing great things about both.

I rode this today in S build and fuel EX 9.8 in Bentonville. I’m a very average ride like very average(Fitness way greater than skills), and it made me feel like a hero going downhill. Really enjoyed the experience. Now considering it after a ride. I can’t get ahold of a Spur or Ripley to ride unfortunately. I also rode my Giant XTC for hour and a half today which is about 5+ pounds lighter. This definitely climbed the tech stuff significantly better than my hard tail.

Great review! Interesting that you said what u did comparing the Tallboy to the Hightower. The frame has very similar geometry. Just shows that the slightest change to geometry can make a huge difference!
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum 5 жыл бұрын
Honeslty, I think a lot of it comes down to the dps fox shock... having a trail (middle) switch on the tb4 where the hightower had the super delux without a trail switch... just open and locked out.... no middle option. That may have been the difference. also, the new hightower didn't have the same life like feeling of the tb4!
@adventuresofchris6098
@adventuresofchris6098 5 жыл бұрын
MTB yumyum ah gotcha. So do u think if the Hightower had a shock with a trail setting it would’ve felt better? I have a Hightower coming this next week, but have been ridding around on a Hightower for the past few weeks as I have easy access to it working for a shop that sells Santa Cruz, and I personally like the feel of it but I like bikes similar to it lot. I did really really like the TB4, super nimble and poppy, wish the S kit didn’t come with a 34. The pike is sooo good on it

Nice vid. I just demoed one yesterday. Wow. The thing that always drove me nuts about shorter travel bikes is how sketch they got at high speed and down steep sections. I mean just cause I’m on trails that don’t require huge amounts of travel doesn’t mean I still don’t want to rip as fast as possible down the trails and hit steep chutes. Hell one of the best things about less gnarly trails is just the ability to rip ‘em fast and have that speeder bike on Endor feeling. But the geometry of short travel bikes always made that a scary endeavor, and the older I get the less I want to be riding on the edge. And along comes this new Tallboy. Still felt like a rocket to me from a standstill and is something that really scooted up the ups and I could pedal all day, but when it came time to let out the reigns, man that is when this thing shined. I own a Bronson V3 that I bought for Appalachian gnar and bike parks and I still love that for that kind of riding, but I am seriously thinking about adding a Tallboy to my stable for riding around the MD-DC-VA trails for which my Bronson, while it does them fine, really is way more bike than needed. Way to go Santa Cruz- thank you for finally uncoupling shorter suspension travel with upright geometry- with modern efficient linkages and steeper seat tubes that is no longer necessary in order for the bike to perform well pedaling or going up- it’s about time someone realized that.
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum 5 жыл бұрын
wow, yeah... Santa Cruz nailed the geometry on this new Tallboy for sure! btw, I still think the v3 bronson is one of the best 27.5 trail bike ever... so good in just about every situation!

MTB yumyum I do love my Bronson. One weekend I took it to a downhill park on Saturday and on Sunday rode 23 miles at a 14 mph average on a road ride- didn’t change the sus, have no lockout and have 2.6 minions on it. Oh, and I suck at road riding. It is truly an allrounder.

Nice to see a 120 bike that can keep up with the long travel bikes on the tough sections. It almost seems like the Ripley might be more comparable to the blur than the tallboy. 2:05 Hey Jason - when you say you'd swap the tires out - why is that? And which tires would you install? I'm curious to know if you think the spec tires are too heavy, or too aggressive, or both? : ) Thanks for the review. I have my eye on this one and the new Ripley. Great question. I'll address this in the live stream Monday night as well... I love the DHR II 2.3 front and Forekaster 2.35 rear combo and right now Im absolutely loving the Rekon 2.4 front and Ardent Race 2.35 rear on my Ibis Ripley... super fast rolling tires that still corner and brake really well for my terrain.
@Monkeyseemonkey79
@Monkeyseemonkey79 5 жыл бұрын
@@mtbyumyum thanks for the response! I used to ride with an Ardent Race 2.3 on the rear... Super fast but I found it kinda sketchy when braking on anything loose. Maybe I just need to improve my technique? I ride DHF and DHR 2.3's on my current bike (5010) and don't want/need more rubber. After a demo of the Ripley it left me thinking "I bet this bike would feel a lot more snappy with some 2.3's on it.". Maybe I'm stuck in my ways, but I'm yet to feel the need for any more rubber than that, and I'm not really into the big tire trend for my kind of riding. Thanks for getting back to me. Yeah, that was the main complaint I have w this tb4... this was the S build and it was just over 30 lbs... by comparison, my Ripley is almost 24 lbs without pedals. On longer 3+ hour rides, the lighter bike is a bigger factor than more capably descending. The tb4 doesn't climb nearly as well as the Ripley even if they were a more similar weight... I think you'd have a hard time getting a tb4 below 27 lbs...

I have rocky, technical terrain, with some gnarly, chundery downhill sections here in NY. Don't want to open a whole new can of worms here but what the Tallboy 4 does great is what all the 130-150mm bikes already do at the same 30ish pounds weight.... honestly, the Ripmo climbs better than the tb4 and descends better imho.. can probably be built up as light weight or even lighter weight... but I don't want to poopoo all over the tb4

@@rstrakovsky Ya I noticed the difference between the review and comments about the TB in the Hightower live chat and here as well. He still seems to be comparing a GX build TB4 to his over the top XTR+ Ripley build. A nice test would be to swap wheels with the TB4 and his Ripley and see how it climbs. I've ridden both and I do agree with his sentiment that the TB feels like a bigger bike and lacks the nimble nature of the Ripley.

Good review and awesome looking bike. Is it fair to say that the tallboy 3 was more of a xc/trail bike and the Tallboy 4 is a short travel trail bike wich is no longer good for xc riding? I'm really curious about the climbing ability between the Tallboy 3 and 4 because the change of geometry?

Good questions. The geometry between the two bikes is just so different... the tb3 had a very snappy feeling to it.. also very quick to accelerate. I would definitely put the tb4 in the trail category. I'd have to ride them back-to-back but as I recall, the tb3 scoots up the trail with more ease...

I have a Hightower LT with a Fox 36 (FIT4 damper) 150mm that has always felt harsh to me especially on small bumps and washboard type terrain. How does the Pike handle that and also which one weighs less? What about going 140mm in front vs 130mm?

I know they're opposites but how does the tallboy climb compared to the mach 6? I'm looking for a bike that climbs really well but slack enough for Santa Cruz and suspension that can handle repeated square edge rocky terrain. No lift service as I have a wreckoning with a boxxer for that

If you already have an Evil Wreckoning, I'd look to something more like this tb4 or the Ripley... Honestly, if I had a two bike quiver, I think the Ripley would complement the Wrecker really well. The advantage of the Ripley over the tb4 or even the Mach 6 you mentioned would be weight.... you can build up a ripley under 27 pounds with good tires easily! Mine is 25 lbs including pedals.

@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum 5 жыл бұрын
haha I actually made the comparison in the response to someone's comment below.... the great thing about this bike is how much fun it is and capable given the short travel... that is also the problem with this bike for me. At 30 lbs why not just get the Ripmo right?!?! there is a case to be made here and I don't want to muddy the water but really, the ripmo climbs better in my opinion (although a back to back ride would help) and is an incredible "poppy" 145mm bike... descend better than the tb4 and weighs about the same. I remember feeling the same way about the Evil Following that everyone was raving about... how capable it was for a short travel bike... the Offering is far and away the better bike and really doesn't weight any more. The same comparison is not true with the new Hightower... that bike doesn't have that same lively poppy feel of the new tb4 or the ripmo... probably getting to far down the rabbit hole for this platform but maybe we talk about it tomorrow night at the live stream. Great comment, thanks!

Love your videos Jason! You do a great job giving your thoughts and opinions on the bikes handling in the real world. Really stoked on these new short travel 29ers (Ripley, Trance, Tallboy) but really unsure if they are enough bike/squish for British Columbia riding. If you aren't hucking jumps or a super aggressive rider but still riding steeper, technical, rocky, rooty terrain - are these bikes gonna get overwhelmed/bottom out? Would one be better on a mid-travel 29er (Ripmo, Hightower, Rocky Mountain Instinct)? The two I'm really considering right now are the Tallboy v4 and the Instinct - but the Instinct in the mid-setting has a 66.5 HTA and 75 STA. With the "long and slack" movement - is that too conservative or you still going to feel pretty confident descending with those numbers? Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks so much for your work!

I'd for sure take the Ripley for the type of rides you've described. And really, tire choice would be an even bigger factor... Something fast rolling and least amount of drag that still held in the corners would be my choice. Right now I'm riding Maxxis Rekon 2.4 front Ardent Race 2.35 rear and feel like it gives enough protection, traction and speed for my Ripley. There are faster rolling tires out there to consider as well but you really start to sacrifice traction in the corners and braking including protection... but no question, the Ripley will out do the Tallboy on weekly 40-70 miles training rides.

Yeah, oddly enough, I thought the new 5010 sort of picked up where the old Bronson left off and this Tallboy is sort of the same way but with 29" wheels... I like this new tb4 better than the old hightower and the new hightower is just a bigger more enduro bike now... tb4 is the best trail bike Santa Cruz makes imho!

I was going to sell my OGHT but instead put an MRP ribbon 160 in the front and a Dpx 2 in the back. Feels like it climbs the same and descends much better now. Awesome bike

I'm coming from a TB3 and looking at the new Hightower or Mega. Would you recommend one over the other based on just weight? I weigh 250lbs

it really comes down to your riding style, terrain and speed.... if the tallboy fit the bill for your riding style and you're just looking for a bit more plush and down hill stability, the Tallboy 4 might just surprise you... it's really good!!

MTB yumyum Thanks for the reply. Ya Im looking for a little more downhill/slack type of bike. I ride moderately fast (mainly due to momentum based on my weight) and ride anything from single track to Snow Summit bike park, jumps, a little tech here and there with some moderate hill climbing at my local trails. Just looking for one bike that can do it all.

how would you say the TB4 stacks up against the 5010, since you mentioned regretting not getting the tallboy at the time?

Nice Review Jason, so glad I bought my Ripley, I agree that Ripley best climber out there and super stable in the chop. I’m a one bike quiver guy and feel the Ripley is just more for your money, Santa Cruz is more name but definitely less for your money and Ripley frame is lighter and you don’t pay extra for a “CC” frame.

Ryan, I couldn't agree more... the Ripley is a rocket ship! I went from a Yeti sb100 to the Ripley and feel it climbs as well or better than the shorter travel sb100. The Ripley with a Pike at 140mm could possibly be my only bike...

MTB yumyum I did option mine with a 140mm Fox Factory 34 since I only have a 1 bike quiver, I missed the Pike train I that everyone is raving about.
