To answer your question about the Stratoliner premier, they're hot and cold, while waterproof, some of these handle rain like a champ,others get curl in the brim, upward curling of the brim,.like many dress hats can get in heavy rains, dress felt while rainproof doesn't always hold it's shape, Akubra makes a few dress hat styles , but out entirely different felt. They're known for rugged outback hats, safari/bush western hats w low crowns, big brims.. Outbacks. They make a dress hat or two, but performance is more than just handling rain .the Bushman crushes in that Dept because it's a different category hat,way harder,tougher felt. The fact that they come in dress hat shapes is great, but they're really high performance Outbacks.. A Stetson premier is thick,but softer,like an old open road from years ago, soft, thick firm..but luxurious,never hard.

Kevin, after the Temple at the 21:00 mark, and before the Stetsonian at 27:20 , which specific style(s) were you saying would be SUPERIOR against rain compared to the Temple? You were detailing the Whippet, Saxon, Roadster, Stratoliner and 1-2 other models before you got to the Stetsonian at 27:20 . Out of those models you demo'd in this video, I'd a DURABLE, classic fedora with a modest, not-too-high crown, that can be dressed up or down, that will stand up to a strong, pop-up rain shower and keep going. Thanks.

I’m a ruggedly rugged guy. My problem is a hat is function as well as form. My brims are wide enough to keep rain off my glasses and rain plus sun off the back of my neck. The crown is shaped to shed water. So I don’t understand really small brims.

I heard years ago the newspaper reporters wore the wide brim fedoras because they worked in an open office environment with the typesetters on balconies above them so they could yell out headlines and stories to them. The wide brims protected them from any type that fell out during the process. And of course they kept their press passes tucked into the hat band. I really like the Stetson Morgan. It has a nice jazz musician fell to it.

This is a GREAT video Kevin. During the summer months, do you recommend putting a hat stretcher in a fur felt hat to prevent the size from shrinking?
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
No. Definitely not good, does more bad if anything,that's not a shoe tree,it doesn't work that way, keep it cool,away from heat, not wearing them for seasons and hear from your radiators warming your home for months,that's what shrink them, With the shoe-tree method,the hat simply shrinks as soon as u release the stretcher, it's also heavy,and weighs the hat in the box, distorting the brim..

If it shrinks,use a stretcher to stretch it back, but not to prevent shrinking.

Hi Kevin ~ if you have a chance could you tell me how the stratoliner special edition and the high life would handle being caught in the rain? Thank you so much!!
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
J James special edition is thinner than the premier edition, that’s the main difference in price,q It is indeed rainproof but a heavy rain will surely knock it out of shape, u can experience some curling of the brim, but it’s hard to say.. some folks are fine, others get issues..I’d say it’s a distinct possibility that rain will give u some curling.. unless it’s light, a few drops is nothing.. Now the High Life is really thick, super thick, like double thick, and it’s super quality felt, beaver. Plus, it has a welter edge, u couldn’t ask for more.. I’m going to guess it’s way way better in rain, I’ve gotten zero complaints, zero hats for reshaping..and only rave reviews..but make sure if u order it, tha they give u the Stetson playing cards, it co,es with a free deck or bycicle cards,Stetson graphics..

Kevin Which do you favor more, the stratonolier or the whippet? And what’s the key difference between the two in your opinion? Oh and are the brims the same width? Both 2 1/2? If I’m correct.
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
ernesto,they’re almost the same hat, shape-wise.. the strat has a thin ribbon band and thinner binding on the edge of the brim, and the Whippet has a wide ribbon band and wider binding on the brim. I think the stratoliner has just a touch of western hat style w that thin band,it’s the same bow they use on the Open Road, so it has a little more western flair, and less of the 1940’s type of styling.. but if u stripped them down, the hat underneath is almost identical.. it’s possible the whippet has a slightly lower crown, but it’s subtle. Hard to notice unless they’re side by side. I like the whippet, it was the first hat I got at JJs when I got this job.

Hey Kevin. Great reviews and info. My question is about the Stetson Temple hats made out of wool. I have 2 Temple hats. I bought one from Stetsons website that is fairly soft and the other stetson temple I bought from a different company and their hat is very stiff. Both wool hats. Can you explain why one hat is soft and the other is stiff? Thanks.
@KTGHATS4 жыл бұрын
That’s Stetson, they are supposed to be stiff.but they vary, they all feel different, very different, and the sizes vary a lot. theyre the same, it’s also possible that if a hat is too soft it can be shopworn, if the brim doesn’t snap, then it’s very shopworn, but I’d say ignore it, that’s very normal, one person sprayed a lot of stiffener on a hat, another person on the assembly line sprayed the hat quickly, it’s typical.. quality control issues, I’d just ignore it, personally.

Kevin, please make video about Borsalino classic shapes for todays felt hat customers.
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
I can make u a nice,long video showing all of the classical shapes of fedoras, but not Borsalino. After their bankruptcy, the USA division never recovered and we never ordered anything from them since, when things stabilize a bit, perhaps they will return to our shop, but for now, there is no US distribution, Borsalino USA, (the entity that sold stores wholesale hats from Italy,) is no more.. and we are not importing anything from that brand for now, eventually they will return, most likely.. but for now.. no Borsalino.

Hi, Kevin. I have an open Crown Fedora. I will try to shape it by myself. Please, I have a question: is it suposed I have to use hot or cold steam? Thank you in advance.
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
Hot as u can,strong,hot steam. Soften it w steam before creasing, then lick it in with more after the shape is finished. Keep the steam away from the brim as much as u can. It'll make the brim curl, and no steam inside the hat,it but s the leather sweatband. Keep the hat between u and the steam, so u don't get burned. . have fun.

Kevin, On the Stratoliner, how does that thin, small ribbon band on that hat handle sweat & sweat stains (compared to wide, taller ribbons) ?
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
Clever question.. it doesn't. The sweat still has a leather sweatband,satin liner and fur felt to go through.. and when it eventually permeates through, u can THEN change it to a new,wide band to cover the stains. that may never happen, none of my hats have salt or sweat stains there,depends on the person,how much wear.. but yeah, u put a wide one on later, if it needs it.

..in response to the question about the Temple and rain.. those Temples are NOT for rain, they have long,thin brims w raw edges.. buy it knowing that it sucks in rain, it is rainproof, but can still lose its shape. I like: the Whippet, The Saxon The Asher(aka Inwood) Morgan High Line Stratoliner Premier Stetsonians are ok, but the brims do have very little flange, they have sort of flat,soft brims..they are thick though.

Did Stetson discontinue the Stetsonian?
@KTGHATS3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think so. That was not a good hat, there were problems w the design, I do not suggest it, if u want a true authentic 1940’s crown, w the real deal nostalgic shaping, get a stratoliner premier, have it shaped with a teardrop. if u don’t like the thin ribbon, have us put a wide band on it. The stetsonian had a huge, oversized brim,that looked way too long no didn’t snap, it was always floppy and it looked like a zoom suit hat, way too long in the brim, it had the best crown, but the brim was terrible, forget that hat, get a premier Strat, ask for a 1940’s teardrop shaping and you’ll have the same crown with a proper 2 3/8” brim.

Greetings from the UK Kev. Really enjoy your videos man, keep them coming. It’s a real Public Service you are doing and so educational too. I have a question, I have been watching The Expanse tv show and one of the characters, Detective Joe Miller is wearing what looks to be sort of a Trilby but has a very stingy brim. It also seems very high crowned. I would love a similar hat but unsure what I should call it or what material it is. Any suggestions mate?
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
taliesyn12 ok, my friend from across the Sea!..the hat is the Guido Delgado model by Goorin brothers, I can wholeheartedly say it is an authentic looking style with that short brim, bound edge and super wide ribbon. We have things like that without that wide ribbon, but we can alter it with actual vintage ribbon of any width for $30. I don’t like the made in China felt quality, when it’s labeled as “imported and non imported materials” nor do I like the fact that they are priced higher than some fur felt,American made hats..despite the crappy,Chinese felt nor the way the salespeople are trained to sell you hat pins, hat sprays and add-on crap...but.. It is a cool style, and there aren’t a lot of hats that look like that now, except Vintage..and that would be way cooler,better quality and about the same price,hunt it down on eBay, “fedora lounge” classifieds or Etsy..just go vintage, that’s my two cents. Holden’s are corny IMO, probably not very gentlemanly of me to say so,but I care very much about what I suggest to customers and viewers, and this is a free forum for self expression, right?..so yeah, I love the look, and lower quality is ok too..but low quality at high prices..eh. if u love it, u have my blessing. I say screw it, wear what u like!✌️

Hey Kevin help me out. Got a great old Stetson stingy brim herringbone textile fedora at an antique store. Back is tightly snapped up but front is down. Front has lost its snap along the way. I steamed and shaped but it won’t hold it’s up snap. Can I use starch or something to stiffen up the front? Thanks Kevin love your videos.
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
Maybe a little ultra Hold hair spray not starch.thin,even coats. Let dry..repeat. on the underside of the brim,(cover up the sweatband. Use a big ball of tissue for that) Let it dry. Steam that curve curvier..push down on the brim against where it meets the crown.and steam..hold it 30 seconds or so until it dries..basiy tweed cut and see hats don't respond to the steaming process,or they do a little bit. It isn't felt,don't expect a lot..but if u are in NYC, I can help.no charge

Very knowledgeable about hats (and humorous) but I don't think the Stetson Temple looks closely like an Indiana Jones hat. The Stetsonian is closer in dimensions and shape to that.
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
You are totally correct. The Temple was the I Jones Stetson sold to the public as the IJ, the one in the movie was different...way more like a stetsonian. the high crown wouldn’t sell to most folks, so they made it more accessible... but I agree, stetsonian has got the right crown, but the brim is too long and it has a bound edge, bu5 the crown is spot on. Good call
@renkolby87865 жыл бұрын
@@KTGHATS Both the Temple & the Stetsonian are cool hats, each of them is unique. Now, the hats seen in the Indiana Jones movies slightly vary in dimensions and shape. The one in Raiders is noticeably boxy with a 7 cm front brim and 6.5 cm side brim. But one of the hats he wears in Temple of Doom has a 7.5 cm front brim and is slightly tapered. Well, all of these hats are diverse. One of the coolest hat that you offer is the Stetson Stratoliner special edition.

@@KTGHATS Dear Kevin, I have two Borsalinos (a trilby, rabbit fur felt) and a 50 grammi. Generally, I really like the shapes and quality, but... there is a but! Sizes are not trustable (I tried two 50 grammi in 56cm, one fitted perfectly, the second was too small. And I had this repeatedly. How does the quality compare to a Stetson Temple (the mink and the sage ones look beautiful!)?
@KTGHATS4 жыл бұрын
Olivier Gires depends on the Borsalino, if it is over five years old, and “quality superior” those are some of the best hats on earth...ever. The newer ones are ok, but not nearly as nice. Totally different hats. Stetson is thicker, a little stiffer, and they run larger, they run true to size, while Borsalino tends to run about a half size too tight, sometimes a whole size too tight.. Stetson runs way bigger, not the same thing.

I stopped in there in 2001 and spoke to the owner who persuaded me to buy a homburg I thought I would I would come back to buy it on my way out of town. I did but the owner wasn't there a clerk (not this one) was there alone and he stood in front of the hat which I could still see behind him and insisted that there was no such hat in the store. I pointed to it and told him I could see it. He still insisted that it didn't exist. And the story loss a $300.00 sale. But it wasn't this guy.

Wow, grey beard and a suit? what a dick, that’s embarrassing. If I was at work now, not quarantined at home, I’d call a store meeting. we like to tell the boss about such things,take the person aside for a meeting and make sure it never happens again...and if it’s the second or third offense, They get sent home, or possibly let go. A lot of guys have come and gone since then, I know it wasn’t me, That’s not really my kinda thing.. but it kinnnnnda sounds like someone familiar. I apologize personally for the guy being such a jerkoff, if u are into hats and nostalgia,I have some really nice,and rare vintage Borsalino posters I’m giving away to viewers, Can I send one your way as a peace pow-wow? I’m more the hippy type, that doesn’t really care enough to lie like that at my job.. I’m here 25 years, I will have a job like this no matter what, if I get fired, I’ll go to another shop.. for me, it’s more about working hard, and helping my boss who’s an honest,stand up lady... I don’t get commission, and whether I sell shit or not, I get the same paycheck..so my thing is..why even try to make drama at work? I do this channel independently, it has nothing to do w the shop,it’s my personal page.. but.. If u feel ok about me sending out a poster to you, u can choose one from this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmW3hIJ9dsllqKc and send your mailing address to info@jjhatcenter.com with “attn Kevin”in the subject line, they’ll forward it to me, By the way, grey beard, suit and tie? I’ll bet. there was this one other, short,weasel dude working here briefly in 2001, voice like Truman capote. But I’ll put $ on it, it’s the grey bearded suit guy? sorry,man, Sincerely, Kevin
