Surly Wednesday Fat Bike Review with my initial riding impressions. I've owned my Wednesday for 3 months during which time I rode it primarily on mountain bike trails, pavement, and towpath. In future videos, I will give my riding impressions on snow and sand. Subscribe so you don't miss those uploads.

Awesome review! I just got myself a Wednesday this year too, and I'm loving it! Just in case anyone is curious, I have a set of 45NRTH Dillinger 5s on it, (They're 4.6" tires) and they fit no problem, even with the rear wheel fully forward in the dropouts!

Thanks for watching! I put on some 4.3 in Surly Ednas, and they fit fine...BUT the chain is just a couple of mm from rubbing the tire when I'm in the 50t cog. Seems ok so far but didn't think I could go any bigger. Good to hear your Dillingers are working for you.

@@TheLankyCyclist I was worried about chain rub too, but so far so good. In the 50t cog it's very close, but so far it hasn't been an issue, and doesn't seem to be rubbing at all.

Nice review! Down the road if you decide you want more tire, check out the Surly Edna’s. 4.3” but roll better than the Nates! Put a set on my Pugs and it transformed that bike. Keep ‘em coming, subscribed!

Great suggestion! I plan to see how the Nates roll on snow and sand this winter, and make a decision then. How do the Ednas do on singletrack?

@@TheLankyCyclist I don’t really ride the Pugs on anything technical, but the Edna’s are aggressive enough for good traction, but actually roll really well on hardpack surfaces.

I know this is an older post but just bought a 2022 Wednesday (not picked up yet) so I've been checking out KZbin videos. You're exactly right. I have a Surly Long Haul Trucker as my road/gravel machine but wanted something for the sloppier Canadian fall/winter months and some summer trail fun. Wednesday seems like a good fit. I may even have a set of 29er wheels built for summer (later purchase). Cheers

Man, I’m a bigger dude (230 pounds) in pretty good shape and ride a Trek Farley 7. I loved the review and wouldn’t mind jumping on one of these as well. #Thiccboys.

Curios if you were ever able to get that derailleur sorted? Cable tension issue? I don’t own any SRAM but the rear derailleur on my ‘03 Trek still shifts fine and that is Deore. Slow shifting on trails would be super annoying.

No, fussed with a bit, but I’m the worst mechanic. I have a new fat bike build project that is in process which should address the issue.

FWIW: Yeah, SX Eagle derailleur are problematic. Well worth upgrading to an NX or GX. That being said, I've had moderate success lubing the derailleur pivots with T9 or Triflo (although they should be lubed out of the box), and then bending the derailleur closer to visually straight as they often come out of the box mounting in a way that the pullies don't appear to be aligned straight with either the cassette cogs or each other. . . I really appreciated your perspectives on the bike. Thx.

Great comments! Will give that a try, but yeah, I believe an upgrade will be necessary in the future.

@@TheLankyCyclist one other thing I remembered, last night, regarding the SX derailleurs is that they are irritating sensitive to the pulley gap when shifting off the largest cog. So, dialing in the b-pivot adjustment to +/- a quarter turn or less to get that shift to work, instead of just measuring the gap can be pretty important also. Darn finicky pieces of flexible plastic dodo.

I'll add, I've had some luck in the shop with running a very tight low limit screw. Tight enough that you can *juuust* get it to shift into first. It seems to help push the derailleur off of first gear, which is the issue I tend to see the most often. Everything adjusted well, everything shifting well, but that darned chain won't come off first and into second. Running the B tension screw 1/2 to 1 turn looser than the derailleur gauge suggests can help as well. Best of luck! SX can be a real pita!

I'm not a bikepacker, but it has lots of mounts. I would say that it probably would be better for bikepacking with some sort of handlebar that offers multiple hand positions.

Can u put a rockshox bluto on it as sometimes advertised on surly fat bikes...because ur 1 1/8 head tube won’t fit 1.5- 11/8 yet I’ve seen them on one

We'll find out soon! I have a one backordered through my LBS. I think the Bluto has a tapered head that is 1 1/18 at the top. I'm not a mechanic, but I've been assured it will work. Hope to have a new video with the Wednesday decked out with the Bluto sometime in the next couple of months. Stay Tuned!

I have been riding mountain bikes with derailleurs for 20 years. My experience is some derailleurs work good some don't. I think it has more to do with how they are assembled rather than brand. Really cheep are not good, but mid range to top line may or may not work properly right out of the box.
