So, would you choose an electric car as your next new car? Does the real world range of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus fit into your life? Or is an all touchscreen control system too much for you? Let us know below!

I have had a Zoe three years, I am never going back to petrol. I love the way an EV drives and it is super convenient provided you have a way of charging it at home. The range means that I usually want to stop before it needs charging too. I would personally like a less Spartan cabin than the Tesla but otherwise would love one.

Tesla. I have an electrician coming on Tuesday to assess installing either an individual charging setup for us or a station for the Townhome complex I live in. It'll obviously be more up front work to make all this happen but all the future obvious features of the Tesla make it a no brainer choice. Autonomous driving because humans suck and I love my wife and kids, electric b/c i love having a stable ecosystem for me and my wife/kids (plus overnight charging sounds swank), and everyone says once you get a taste of the instant torque there is no going back to ICE vehicles.

Why not compare electric cars rather than be a sell out to some company?

I live in the US and own 2 BMWs ( m240 and X5) and the Model 3 SR+. While I love the way the BMWs look, feel and handle, they stay in the garage most of the time. The SR+ is quicker than m240 (drag raced them at the track) is infinitely cheaper to run and maintain and the infotainment system and sound system is just better and more advanced. Although I sometimes miss the visceral growl of the bimmer’s straight six, the model 3 is an overall better car with a silky smooth powertrain. I ordered the Cybertruck and will not look back when I go full electric in about 2 years. We live in amazing times!
@mihnealazar70394 жыл бұрын
In US it makes sense. In Europe it makes sense, but less. I live in Romania. Here pretty much all people in cities live in blocks of flats (up to medium and high-medium class). So over-night charging is not an option. People would have to rely on charging stations, which are mostly free but slow. And there are few charging stations in the big cities, while in between them there are pretty much none. So a long trip is excluded if you have an electric car. So here the BMW would make more sense.

In Europe and Australia, you'll save tons of money not having to buy petrol

I agree. Model 3's electric motor drivetrain feels silky smooth compared to all internal combustion engines, even the smooth operating BMW inline-6 engine. There is no question that electric motor is the superior approach to vehicle propulsion. Anyone who has driven the Model 3 would come to that conclusion.

@@mihnealazar7039 Short term it can be an issue for how to charge an EV without off street parking. However, long term there will be charge points for street parking, car parks (garages), shops, offices, etc., as EVs take over. EVs win long term due to vastly lower operating costs (1/3 to 1/4 vs fossil fuel and combustion engine wear and maintenance) and within 5-10 years, lower EV purchase costs, as battery costs continue to fall.

Since 2018 my dual motor Tesla Model 3 keeps getting better because of the free over the air updates. It's like owning a newer car every few month or so. This is one of the most important reasons to own a Tesla, your car is getting better while aging. I won't consider any other EV brand until they offer the same capability.
@LoanwordEggcorn4 жыл бұрын
@John Edwards Not in any significant way. The only thing that requires a hardware upgrade in some early Model 3s is full self driving, which requires a new neural network computer. The cost of replacing the computer is included in the price of the Full Self Driving option. So basically no new hardware is needed for most software updates, same as your phone or computer.
@LoanwordEggcorn4 жыл бұрын
@John Edwards Teslas have had major upgrades via over the air updates. Autopilot was originally rolled out as a software update. Tesla does extremely rapid development, and improvements happen every few months. Most of those happen without hardware changes, though Autopilot does require cameras, etc., and a some early cars didn't have them. In addition to constantly improving software, Tesla makes hardware improvements pretty much non-stop, and at a MUCH faster pace than the old car makers, particularly continual improvements to battery chemistry and capacity, but in almost all other aspects too. Rapid development and short update cycles is something borrowed from Silicon Valley software companies, and it's a reason progress and innovation is so rapid at Tesla and SpaceX. Most of the sophistication/capabilities of SpaceX or Tesla vehicles are due to software, and the software is being continually improved. In addition to excellent software that's constantly improved, Tesla (and SpaceX) have top quality hardware implementations (mechanical, electrical, computer) for the software to run on. And they too are under constant development and improvement. A Tesla Model S made in 2020 has very extensive improvements from one made in 2012, and the changes happened nearly constantly over time. Another key point is that due to very high levels of integration, Tesla has control over far more of their hardware via software then other car makers. Most other car makers literally cannot upgrade the software of (most of) their car's systems, and that's a major reason why other the air updates were unique to Tesla for a most of decade. Most other cars literally can not do over the air updates today. So some of your concerns seem misapplied or underinformed.
@LoanwordEggcorn4 жыл бұрын
@John Edwards Tesla has major hardware changes and minor hardware changes. Only the very largest hardware changes are incompatible. The oldest Teslas that lack Autopilot hardware (obviously) can't do Autopilot. Teslas that have Autopilot hardware (from 2014 on) can do Autopilot software upgrades. A few of the Autopilot details differ between the latest neural network hardware (version 3) and the second most recent (version 2), but the neural network computers are a modular board that can be upgraded to the latest (from version 2 to version 3) without changing anything else in the car. So again, some of your criticisms are inaccurate. Regarding choice, it would be great if other car makers made cars as competent and capable as Teslas. So far no one has made a car that competes with the original 2012 Model S at the same price for range or performance. They are therefore objectively more than 7 years behind Tesla.
@LoanwordEggcorn4 жыл бұрын
@John Edwards Air suspension is probably the only other major consumer difference over the entire life of the Model S. Most of the other internal improvements are invisible to the end user, but make the car better in relatively subtle but important ways like efficiency. Better efficiency translates into better range and lower operating costs, and has improved nearly continually in many ways: battery chemistry, motors, software, etc. Battery capacity has improved continuously resulting in lower costs and longer ranges. Battery improvements are inevitable for all EVs, but Tesla starts with a major advantage in battery cost due to massive investments in battery making at their Gigafactory. Tesla very likely has the lowest battery cost of any EV made today, and the cost advantage is a substantial lead over other EV makers. Other battery makers are catching up, relatively slowly. Tesla's battery performance is more of an incremental gain, but it's a significant one, and a significant and ongoing commercial advantage over other EVs. Battery cost is a reason Tesla can build EVs at a 20-28% gross profit margin (similar to BMW and Mercedes gross profit margins), while GM loses money on every Bolt (Ampera) EV sold. Same with Fiat, for sure. Tesla recently improved the Model S and X suspension with the Raven version which is (more) adaptive and incrementally more comfortable and sporty when appropriate. Tesla's lane keeping and cruise control are universally regarded as the best performing, due to better neural networks, better training, better fleet learning, and better updates. The design of the Model 3 is more stable than the Model S and X because it's a mechanically simpler car that's more highly evolved, being a newer design. Experience gained from S and X was applied to 3. Model Y is even simpler than Model 3. Model Y benefits from the experience of designing and manufacturing Model 3. Neither 3 nor Y should have as many changes as S and X because they're newer and simpler designs. They're better optimized from the start, due to the experience effect.

Model 3 actually has excellent voice recognition that controls most of the things that would otherwise need buttons, including steering wheel and mirror adjustment, navigation, media, even the glove box, so I don’t think the absence of buttons is a big deal. I have a Model 3 Performance and my wife has a 330e, so I have a pretty good idea of both. I like the way they both drive, although the Model 3 has far superior acceleration, of course. I think the Tesla seats are more comfortable than BMW on long drives. The user interface of the Tesla is far superior (although I do like the BMW head up display and think that this should be available in a technologically advanced car such as the Tesla), as is the voice recognition, driver assistance, over the air updates and the app.

@BTICronox Here's a helping hand to make you understand why the Model 3 approach is so superior. Go onto eBay/Google, whatever, and have a look for "BMW 3 Series mirror button". Thousands of results for sale. Meaning (obviously) thousands have failed. Are they even all the same? Of course not. You'll need to hunt for the exact one. Then spend the time/ money to get it fitted etc. Understand now? But, yes, you're extremely welcome to your extra 2 seconds every couple of months when you might have to adjust the mirrors with your dedicated little button. I also assume you whipped out a physical keyboard and plugged it into your tablet/phone before typing your response, eh?
@LoanwordEggcorn4 жыл бұрын
@BTICronox Everything is not on the Model 3 screen. The only thing the screen is used for on a daily basis is glancing at the speedometer occasionally and the map. Both are very large and clear. Temperature control is at a fixed position on the bottom of the screen. Most people set it and forget it. Everything else ACTUALLY USED WHEN DRIVING, can be adjusted from steering wheel stalks or scroll buttons. And it's all very easy to use due to excellent ergonomic design. These things and more are on the steering wheel stalks and scroll buttons: cruise control distance, cruise control speed, autopilot engage and disengage, confirm automatic lane change, audio track and volume, phone answer and hangup, text message read and reply, and the usual gear selection, turn signal, windshield washer, etc. Due to that, hands stay on the steering wheel and eyes stay on the road for pretty much all normal driving functions. They are easily operated by touch and feel alone, and they're very easy to use. All navigation, phone use and even text messaging can be easily done using voice commands. There are also voice commands to adjust temperature, seat heaters, music selections, phone, etc. Voice commands are the easiest and likely most common way to navigate somewhere. just like your phone except the car can do almost all of the highway driving. So the idea that the screen is used for everything is objectively wrong in actual real world use. Most of the settings on the screen have fully automated settings and are set it and forget it, and voice commands and steering wheel controls are used for most common driving functions. For example, most people set the automatic lights, automatic wipers, automatic climate control and never change them manually. Temperature is easily adjusted while staying in automatic mode. Because of that the screen gets very little use during actual driving.

By 2025 to 2030 at latest, it will cost less to build and buy an EV than a comparable ICE, due to falling battery costs. At that point it will both cost more to buy an ICE and 3x to 4x more to operate. Almost no one will buy an ICE at that cost. This is without any subsidies. ICE is already going to be dead for purely economic reasons. And companies that have billions tied up in ICE factories and infrastructure will go bankrupt due to stranded assets since ICE vehicles will be worth almost nothing then. Only manufacturers that rapidly and aggressively move to EVs will survive.

The Model 3 does not have an engine in the front and it has a lower center of gravity than a Porsche 911. It handles better than the 3 series. Just because the Model 3 SR+ has a little more body roll than the 3 series doesn't make it a better handler. This was an awesome comparison, very fair and balanced, and a solid summary of both vehicles. One notion that does have to be squashed is the idea you _can't_ own an electric if you don't have a driveway - this just isn't true. I park a Model 3 on street, do a weekly top up at the local community centre, or use super chargers on big trips. It's not _as_ convenient as a home charger, but it is very workable. Charging at work is also worth asking about.
@LoanwordEggcorn4 жыл бұрын
For those who *can* charge at home or work, you plug in when you arrive and have a full charge before you leave. For home use (with electricity where you park) you typically set a timer so it charges late at night when the grid is underloaded, and electric rates are cheapest. It's incredibly convenient to start any day with a "full tank" and never go to a fossil fuel station. Fast chargers are generally only used for long road trips, as you note. People seem very confused about this, assuming that a fast charger is like a fossil fuel station. When you can charge virtually anywhere with electricity, the latter is decidedly not the case. Charging is actually more convenient since any time/place a car is parked can be used to charge, provided electricity is available, and there aren't many buildings/facilities that people drive to that don't have electricity. In the long term, charge points will be available for most parking spaces.
@AOTanoos224 жыл бұрын
try doing it in a big city in Europe, like Paris, London, Berlin etc. you can not charge your car at your home since you obviously park your car on the street and live in a building with multiple floors from where its impossible to charge your car. At work its the same story, going once a week to a supercharger is also no option since the superchargers are outside of the city or on the outskirts so it would take me at least half an hour to drive to that location if there is no traffic, let alone charge the car all the way up and drive half an hour back. The only way i could charge it is at a public charger 15 minutes away from me which is a slow 50kw charger, so if i'd charge the car once a week with a 50kw charger i would literally spend hours every week just waiting for the car to get charged. So still i would take an ICE car at any day of the week over an EV.

It really depends on conditions I suppose. 250 miles EPA is lower at highway speeds. I agree they should say what they are using for their test procedures. We haven’t driven our 2019 SR+ in summer conditions too much, but I would guarantee we can get 100% of rated range on a nice summer day with city driving! But I would say real world would be 90% to 10% because we only charge to 100% at the start of a trip. Since we have 19” wheels, it’s a few percent less efficient and we are at 5% battery degradation, 100% rated is 360 km / 225 miles now, so 225 x 80% (90 to 10) is 180 miles at 100% efficiency. But I doubt that is what they are saying.

I like it a lot but can’t get myself to buy a internal combustion engine car again. (even though I currently drive one, the next will be all electric for me) Btw the model 3 performance is the one that outperforms the M3 on the track. But they had to make a cheap car to save their skin. I did testdrive the model 3, i might have considered it if the handeling & looks were better & if the infotaintment was not bad with touch only (super dangerous while driving) .And (sorry to say it) bad voice control in dutch. ( the bmw voice control is Bad as well only thing that works perfect is the “hey bmw” part) but you have the perfect working wheel to control the screen & toutch & gesture control. @@jnergo8406 passionate about driving is one thing, but how many time can you actually drive in a "spirited" way, on the edge diving from corner to corner ? it would be nice if car reviews focus more on actual day to day driving ability, like, how does it behave in a city, on a highway, heavy traffic, speed bumps, driving comfort, easy to park (at times the view is so attrocious, though sensors/camera's help). is the boot space actually usable (i mean knowing the liters is nice but there's cars with a big boot space and a trunk opening where you barely can fit a large hardshell luggage case through). accellerating onto the highway, and something like 30/40-70/90 kph accelleration for passing a slow vehicle on a 2 lane. and yes, testing behaviour in fast corners is also a safety feature but i mean these are supposed to be daily drivers and not performance cars (or versions)
