Damn I get 16 mpg combined and my 2018 4runner has a 2 and a half inch lift and bigger tires and heavier wheels on it along with other armor. Either way the 4Runner is my favorite vehicle. Absolutely have no complaints besides the mpg but it’s a sacrifice i make for the enjoyment, reliability, piece of mind, and knowing this machine can take me anywhere anytime and bring me back.

Fun video. Love my T4R. Theres a good reason why the 4Runner doesn't have all sorts of extras and the same engine its had 4ever. Nothing breaks. Ever. And when you are in the middle of nowhere you know it will get you home every time in any weather.

Why does no one ever talk about Toyota’s amazing ATrack system? It works great.

Atrac, which is called MTS in the newer Toyotas. MTS is a variable ATRAC that allows you to adjust the amount of slip allowed before intervention. For instance in mud you wouldn't want super early brake intervention because a spinning wheel is good where as on rock you would.

I can attest that the snow in the Pacific Northwest is very different from the rest of the US. After the extremely wet snow comes down, it packs down, melts, freezes over, churns, and crusts over, it's like driving on ice cream mud that has a thousand separate layers with the base layer that behaves like everfrost. I am originally from the Midwest, lived through New England winters and Pittsburgh winters, the packed snow here is really hard to drive on esp with hills. And I am a winter tire (Blizzaks) fanatic

Where you stopped in the snow...you could have locked the rear diff and go in 4LO. Bringing a shovel or two can be a game changer and some tow straps. Even a come along can be a game changer. About fuel economy...the 1GR-FE is a bit thirsty but man oh man it may run forever. Having owned GM and FORD....TOYOTA rocks in quality and reliabilty. When driving in snow/ice conditions, car reviewers should be testing with proper winter tires: "All terrain tires have a rubber compound that is designed for warmer weather use. Dedicated winter tires have a compound that grips better in colder temperatures and a tread pattern that is better suited for traction on snow and ice."

Where you finally stopped was the spot that you should have engaged the crawl control. I have a trd off road. In order to tow my boat off the beach sand I use crawl control. It is the only way I will get it off. I had people try without using it with no success. Momentum helps when you can get it, but from a standing stop crawl control is better than human control.
@snowysysadmin59

The only thing (i can respect and understand why) is that, when you guys get stuck slipping or sliding, you go to "lets go as slow as possible and see if that will fix it" and most of the time, that will get you out of trouble. But i think at the end, instead of just backing down the mountain, you should have backed down a few feet to where you had grip, turned off TCS and just hammered down and see if it would get through that rough section.

Excellency review!!... I have the 4Runner TRD Off Road with Fox Shocks and a Magnuson Supercharger (installed last year) that I love so much, it is definitely my forever rig lol... My only dislike about it was the lack of power on the highway when it came to passing and accelerating faster when on the highway, especially when fully loaded for overlanding.. The Magnuson supercharger makes her feel exactly as you would expect an SUV of this size to feel.. I can pass on highways EASILY now.. Even when loaded up with water, extra fuel, my rooftop tent, food, spare parts, recovery gear and everything else needed for remote touring.. It feels more like a V8 now!.. Even every aspect of off roading is even more funner than it was!

@mechmat12345
@mechmat12345 4 жыл бұрын
Because they did actually do some updates in 2020 like improved safety tech, updated infotainment, and push button start/keyless entry on some models. Resale value is also spectacular, meaning you won't save much buying a late model used version if you have a higher interest rate (which is common in new vs used financing). Carvana literally has a 2018 TRD Off Road model right now and they are charging $150 MORE than the original window sticker price.

why are you driving so fast on ice? also why would you not use the locking differential and crawl control to go up further?🤦🏻‍♂️

But at least use your truck’s potential fully first before back down. Now all I could think of is you, not the truck.

This is the type of people we haul back to town after we find their cars left abandoned sideways in the middle of the trail, and we have to pull their vehicle off the road to get by them. And then we find them freezing to death and often crying as they wave their arms frantically to be picked up a mile or so later.

The v8 actually got better mpg than the v6 in that generation of 4runner. There are a few reviews out there showing this when comparing the 2020 VS older 4runners.

Good to see Toyota sticking with the 4.0 eng over rhe 3.5 which is a good car engine, but lacks low end torque for off-road.

@26:40 you said earlier in the video crow control can even dig yourself out in a san environment. If you truly had confidence in the vehicle. then you would at least give it a shot in the snow environment. Now yes I wasn’t there in your situation so obviously I’m not telling you what to do! but again it would’ve been nice to see if it would have been able to get it self out!

# old engine , worse mpg there is reason for that. it is CALLED quality and reliability!! old school is best school!!!!!! ======= no wonder Toyota is crushing everybody in USA/ world . 2+mln sells per year in USA ! ask Honda how that new tech works for company w/ constant complaints of dilution!
