What is interesting is if you watch the clip at 19:12 you can see the caddie touch the sand and then feel it between his fingers before he stands up. If you watch the overhead shot at 20:05 he rubs the sand and then stands up without feeling the sand between his fingers. Clearly two different clips. He did this at least twice.

I couldn't hear exactly what he said, did he deny touching the sand? Or did he deny that he was testing the sand when he did touch it? Either, way, mystifying to see him do that. He's a resort caddie and might not play/caddie in tournament events often, but even if he didn't know the rules perfectly it seems hard to believe that he wouldn't at least suspect that you can't do that.

Same I feel so bad for Pinto. But that other players caddie seems like such a dick
@TheLocalLt4 жыл бұрын
He didn’t deny it at all, he said he was trying to see whether it was a rock or sand, this argument imo is a golden parachute that lets him off the hook either way, unless the club specifically defines all hazards which I doubt they do, because if you were trying to see whether it was a rock that was part of the bunker face (which would be through the green), or part of the bunker itself (which would be a hazard). In this case, the sand does look kind of like an area of bare exposed rock, meaning his explanation is likely not only valid, it could be the entire truth and not a white lie. But the USGA, which is usually supposed to take a player’s word for it, although in match play the referee does have discretion, decides to use that unusual discretion to say that the caddy was lying and that he was testing the sand, even though this may not have been the case at all and he may have been doing exactly what he said and checking to determine if it was a rock face or the bunker! If you have to break some twigs within a hazard area to be able to see that you are in face within the stakes, you don’t get penalized, there’s no penalty for trying to determine if you are in a hazard or not. Once it’s established you are, then it’s fair game, but even then winning by technicality sucks. Does Bob Goalby really feel like he actually “won” the Masters fair and square, except for during that week in April when he gets treated as all the other winners? I have played against blatant cheaters in golf, but the reality is if you can’t prove it or their explanation is good then you don’t really have a choice but to let them off the hook. On top of that, the testing of sand in a bunker rule is ridiculous, the new rules allow you to hack to China in a bunker pre-shot but you can’t push down a little?

The part that is dumb is that this is exactly what the new rules of golf were designed to avoid, one of the new rules being able to ground your club in a hazard including bunkers. Why was this previously banned? To stop players from testing the consistency of the sand, or in the case of a red or yellow hazard to prevent them from testing the firmness of the turf. However the new rule for some asinine reason still bans “testing” the surface by pressing with a club or your hand, while allowing for grounding the club and taking practice swings, which of course allow you to test the surface with a practice swing that can allow you to test your entire planned shot! So if you are going to let players go all the way to taking practice hacks in a bunker, why continue to ban pushing down on the sand, which is far less disruptive to either the bunker or to play than digging to China on practice swings

TheLocalLt no, you’ve got the new rule wrong. The player can remove a loose impediment but cannot test the sand in any way. Read up here: golf.com/news/2019-rules-changes-to-know-bunker/
@TheLocalLt4 жыл бұрын
Robert Watters Jr. my point is that taking practice swings in a bunker is effectively way bigger “testing” of the sand than pushing the toe of your club down or feeling the sand with your fingers. Also read the second part of my comment which I added to after watching the whole incident, the caddie’s explanation of seeing whether it was in fact the bunker or not, while not necessarily believable given that he knows the course, is absolutely plausible enough for the USGA to accept, which would have been the best option given the fact that he never even met the player before today, and the fact that if they were to rule that the caddie was lying (which is ONLY allowed because this is match play, where the referee gets discretion, whereas in stroke play the rules officials of the USGA would have had to accept the caddie’s explanation. Well unless your name is Dustin Johnson, not in 2010, which was very unfortunate and a ridiculous rule but it was cut and dry, but in 2016 I didn’t understand how the USGA was allowed to penalize Johnson when video evidence was very unclear) it would mean the player, who actually earned this opportunity and played dozens of holes of outstanding golf to get to the round of 16, and to take this match to the 18th against someone on home soil, would lose the hole without any opportunity for reprieve. In this circumstance if I were the referee I would be thanking god that the caddie came up with a realistic explanation which would allow me to avoid the disaster which ultimately occurred, thanks to the USGA declaring the caddie a liar and giving not only the hole but the match to his player’s opponent
@rwattersjr4 жыл бұрын
TheLocalLt it doesn’t appear that you have read the rule. You cannot take practice swings in a bunker that actually touch the sand. You might be confusing bunkers with penalty areas. You can ground your club in a penalty area. As to your second point, nobody could claim any uncertainty that the green side bunker was a bunker.
@rwattersjr4 жыл бұрын
TheLocalLt also, the DJ incident happened at a course that had waste areas. You can do anything you want in a waste area accept improve your lie or the path of the club. I agree that it was a questionable call, but I seem to remember that the players were warned of the issue before the tournament started.
@TheLocalLt4 жыл бұрын
Robert Watters Jr. again the part he was touching had only a small and patchy layer of thinly raked sand over dark brown hardpan. His explanation that he was seeing if this was a rock (thus making it part of the bunker face, through the green, and thus legal to touch) or sand itself (thus making it a bunker) was certainly valid enough in this instance to be an out. It seems that dan hicks completely ignored and in fact partially talked over that comment, instead saying (falsely) that the caddie denied touching the sand. This is why everyone got this false impression of this. The match referee seemed to be caving to this explanation until the other player’s caddie and family members started freaking out causing a second rules official to come over and make the referee enforce the penalty. As far as why it’s a stupid rule, I guess maybe you have me on that part of this. So does that mean there are now different rules in a bunker than a yellow or red hazard? Me and the ppl I play with interpreted that you can now ground your club in a penalty area to mean any hazard, but I‘ll believe you on that.
