He just didn’t have to scramble from as far back from the flag as everyone else in the field. No one else was able to figure out how to score all four rounds except Bryson. Had Winged Foot be more difficult on Thursday, no one else besides Bryson would have finished at par or better. Six under after 4 founds on this course is beyond phenomenal.

Not to mention the management and shot making when he did miss fairways and greens. And then to top it off the clutch putts he holed were out of this world. Even on the last when he could've easily 2 putted he put in the time to make sure it went in. Any golfer can learn a lot from this round.

Must have been a very friendly rules official "A sprinkler head is an immovable obstruction and is covered by Rule 24-2. That Rule states that you are entitled to relief for a ball that lies in or on the obstruction or when the obstruction interferes with your area of intended stance or swing. However, Rule 24-2 does not grant relief for an obstruction that intervenes on your line of play when you are off the putting green." There could have been a local rule to give relief on line of play but only if the ball is within two club lengths of the green.

I loved how DeChambeau won this thing...a little like Tiger's 2000. But the rough was not that penal. The combo of rough and greens was. However, I remember a few PGAs and US Opens in the 80s and 90s where no professional, not even John Daly, could do anything with the ball. Bryson is a beast, but not any more so than Daly, so I think the USGA will make this adjustment if bulk begins (rather, continue in some ways) to master other majors IMO. Too soon to tell, it's only one win for now.
@perserverance3334 жыл бұрын
23 FW hit and wins US Open? Never should happen. They need to make the rough twice as high to prevent this from happening. They need to REALLY penalize players for missing the fw. Golf is a game of accuracy and he had none of it off the tee. Hogan hit almost every fw in the US Opens he played in.
@DanielSong394 жыл бұрын
No one was hitting fairways. 23 fairways was actually above average in the field. If he was hitting 23 fairways and everyone else was hitting 30+ then you might have a good point.

He had a strategy and it worked. Not sure why there's so much talk about him ruining the game. When Tiger hit the Tour, he was one of the few that actually hit the gym so I don't consider Dechambeau's strategy to bulk up to be that far out there. If you can hit the ball far and accurate enough, I think we can all agree we'd rather be hitting our wedges for approach shots than hitting our long irons and fairway woods trying to reach the green. The only question that's in play is whether this strategy will pay off in the long run. With a swing like that, he could develop injuries down the road, but I really don't think he's concerned with that. Anyone can get injured playing this game.

This US Open did exactly what a major championship should do - separate great players from good ones.

People don't realise that Bryson's drives were just in his averages - in terms of distance like fairways hit. His iron shots from anywhere were off the charts, his scrambling and long putting were also great. Missed a lot of putts by an inch though, with a bit of luck he could have won by a larger margin. I'm not a huge fan of him or his swing, but his strategy to take his chance everywhere and play with his strengths really was the better one for him. I appreciate his determination this week The USGA set up a great course, very difficult and fair, and the better player this week won the trophy, simple as that.
