2020 a Meteorite Review:
Maxime Denoncin starts us off with a video check-in from Brussels, Belgium. He produced a great video that provides details of some of 2020’s newest witnessed meteorite falls:
• Gatuto (Kenya 4-24-2020 8:27pm) L6-S2-W0 TKW: 25kg Main Mass Holder (MMH): John Higgins, Outer Space Rocks (Very sparse chondrules and partial chondrules - Ordinary chondrite L6)
• Kolang (Indonesia 8-1-2020 4pm) CM1/2 TKW: 2.55kg Specimen Holder (SPH) Mark Lyon (The dominant lithology contains areas with chondrules completely replaced by hydrous silicates (CM1/2), to areas more typical of CM2 meteorites. The bulk mineralogy is largely consistent with CM1 to 2 meteorites.)
• Santa Filomena (Brazil 8-19-2020 10am) H5-6-S4-W0 TKW: 80kg (SPH) Mark Lyon (H5-6 breccia ordinary chondrite)
• Tarda (Morocco 8-25-2020 2:30pm) C2-ung TKW: 4kg SPH: Juan Aviles, Jurassic Dreams Fossils (The isotopic values do not overlap with those of any established carbonaceous chondrite group, hence the ungrouped designation.)
• Zhob (Pakistan 1-9-2020 6:30pm) H3-4-S2-W0 TKW: 19kg (Breccia of H4 clasts in an unequilibrated H3 host matrix.)
• Erg Chech 002 Achondrite-ung TKW: 32kg (SPH: Mark Lyon) unknown parent body Achondrite (ungrouped, gabbroic with pyroxene megacrysts, sodic)
In 2020, there was a total of only 4,241g of new Pallasites were added to the MetBull via 8 new meteorites. There was also 1,544 new MetBull entries from Antarctica. And coolest of all, 9 new “Mars” meteorites were discovered. Not Martian meteorites. These are documented Iron and Stoney Iron meteorites found on the surface of Mars by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity.
Cameron Smith rewound 2020 with a look back at all 12 meteorites from the “Meteorite of the Month Club”. What a great idea carried out so well. I cannot believe the quality and ‘newness’ of meteorites offered during its first year.
Mike Kelly showed his 2020 witnessed fall collection. We reminisced about spending time together back in Jan/Feb of 2020 in Tucson at the “Topherspin Meteorite Mansion”, shopping all day and cutting all night. He snuck in some chemistry on us with the newly confirmed 2020 research that shows Hemolithin, an iron and lithium-containing protein of extraterrestrial origin, is found in Allende.
Some notable MetBull entries that were discussed - only 3 were not shown:
• NWA 13579 The “Odd Numbered Golden” Pallasite TKW: 719g (MMH: Oz Backman and Topher Spinnato) Eucrite, monomict breccia
• NWA 13202 Chondrite-ung 1of36 - TKW: 396g (MMH: Mark Lyon) 75% metal. Paired with NWA 12273 and NWA 12379 as Chondrite (ungrouped, metal-rich).
• Gourara 003 Eucrite-mmict TKW: 3,273g single fragmented stone (MMH: Oz Bachman, Jason Bliss, and Topher Spinnato) Eucrite, monomict breccia with extremely fresh, black glossy fusion crust and fine grain matrix.
• NWA 13521 L5-S3-W3 TKW: 585g (MMH: Cameron Smith -his 1st) an ordinary L5 chondrite composed of few blurred chondrules set in a fine-grained recrystallized matrix containing secondary recrystallized plagioclase.
• NWA 13635 H6-S1-W1 TKW 2,913g (MMH: Martin Lollar -his 1st and Matt Stream)
• NWA 13520 L(H)3-S2-W2 1of4 TKW: 719g (MMH: Pat Brown -his 1st) The observation of FeO-poor silicates relative to L3 chondrites leads to the L(H)3 classification.
• NWA 11889 TKW: 75g reclassified as CO3.1-an (new class)
• NWA 13532 TKW: 115g (MMH: Chris Colvin) Mesosiderite-B2/3 (new class) Type B based on observation that pyroxene is more abundant than plagioclase. Type2/3 B mesosiderite based on texture and mineralogy.
• NWA 13411 TKW: 264g Dave Lehman MMH OC5-an (new class)
• Tazzarine 002 H5-S1-W2 TKW: 5,110g (MMH: Juan Aviles -his 1st) Numerous small iron oxide veinlets are present throughout. Ordinary chondrite, H5
• NWA 13328 LL4-5 melt breccia 1of1 TKW: 650g (MMH: Mark Lyon) Ordinary chondrite LL4-5-melt breccia (new class) Breccia composed of equilibrated lithic clasts (type 4 and type 5) containing relatively sparse but well-formed chondrules.
There was other cool stuff that you have to watch for, like John Higgins new Diogenite announcement. I have Tarda, Gatuto, Santa Filomena, Gourara 003, Erg Chech 002 and NWA 13579 available for sale, all from 2020. I gotta say, 2020 was not that bad after all!
