An anime adaptation is supposed to be in the works, which I assume will cover the entire manga. No idea when it's supposed to air though.

Read the manga about ten years ago. I knew the movie came out before the manga was finished was surprised how the the movie basically only covers up to about halfway through book two (and even then there was a load more detail). I would definitely say the manga is totally separate and can be read regardless of how much you love the movie. It’s way more than just a longer expanded version of the movie.

Oh my god, it's actual HARDCOVERS?! Oh if I had the money to spare...and it even has the spineart of the original Japanese volume collections that my parents have (got the first of that still here with me. It's over on my bookshelf to my right. It's just bizarre kind of to see it in the video and on my bookshelf at the same time). As for the movie and manga "read-the-manga-for-the-whole-story" mentality, the reason that that is is for the same reason that Nausicaa is like that. It's a case where the guy started making the manga, but then the movie ended up getting worked on midway through so the whole story wasn't done yet leading to differences between the movie's later parts and the unfinished story of the manga, and then some time after the movie was made the manga was finished which had a different ending given how developed the world of the story was in the manga version after the movie was finished (though there's quite some differences in the first parts of the manga and the first parts of the movie for Akira also).

Regarding your comment of catastrophic themes in Japanese media. I believe you are absolutely correct regarding the recurring theme of mass destruction. It is a very common theme taking various forms from big 'ol robots destroying cities, to literal bombs, or (as I understand Akira) a paranormal psychic blast. I've always thought it's clearly linked to a collective societal subconscious struggling with the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One excellent thing about the manga is it fills out a lot of stories that weren't filled out in the movie. Enjoy!

Got a really lucky deal from some merchant listing on eBay, there were only 10 copies left and sold out in the span of 1 to 2 days at max. I picked the last one. Bruh, we are closer to the 40th anniversary of Akira than the 35th but they keep releasing it again and again, it diminishes the prestige and feeling of rarity when you bought the box set thinking it would be a once in a lifetime thing.
