The children yearn for the Xperia Play. Like it's insane how long it took for this style of controller to come back to us. Like all of the companies out there making mobile controllers and not ONE of them thought about making it like this instead of using a telescopic design?

I saw the video from that kid who's making this controller a few months ago. This type of controller has been my dream concept for mobile phones since the Xperia Play. Unfortunately (so far at least) the one shown in the video is strictly exclusive to iPhones. Hopefully in the near future there is a "universal fit" made for Android phones as well.

Now that iPhone uses usb-c it's a definite possibility.
@rauljimenez414
@rauljimenez414 Сағат бұрын
@Jokerwolf666 That's not the issue. The charger has nothing to do with this controller. The issue is the camera placement. For iPhone, it's kinda easy to make 3 or 4 different backplates to fit in. But on android it's wild how many different approaches there are. Anyway, in is web he said he's looking into it. So there's hope for a universal fit

Sony owns the patents. This isn’t some groundbreaking new idea here, you just can’t outright copy an idea like this. I’m guessing its patents are directly related to gaming devices, particularly in regards to controller types. Since lots of phones have sliding interfaces.

The formfactor is really cool, but I think the main kicker is the fact that it's more or less specific to a particular handset. If you own that handset then great, but otherwise you're left out. I imagine it's probably why existing companies haven't tried it, because it either severely limits your target audience (on something already pretty niche), or greatly increases your manufacturing costs to produce different variations. The current telescoping ones might be cumbersome by comparison, but are generally one size fits all.
40 минут бұрын
yeah this idea works better for iphones because they all are physically the same but android users are probably the ones that consume this type of idea more
@short_yeti2058
@short_yeti2058 19 минут бұрын
If the phone mount stays a detachable piece I can see manufacturing only that part in different sizes. Or if it stays one piece a more generic tip mount with a form fitting insert. I could also see it going phone agnostic and being flat with the magnets totally. Two nubs on the bottom corners to help keep it in place and be done.
@frosted_cupkate
@frosted_cupkate 9 минут бұрын
@@short_yeti2058 If it's flat, phones' camera bezels will collide with it, so I think it needs something adjustable/swappable to accommodate differing bezels. Otherwise you're going to have to add a case to your phone to level it off, which then adds to the weight/thickness of your phone 24/7. As for corner nubs, I'm not 100% sure how you'd mean them to be implemented, but there's a large variety in handset widths too, which means that any corners would need to be adjustable.

It frustrates me that we got rid of slide phones for this exact reason. When the first line of Galaxy phones came out, each carrier had their own special variant and I had Sprint's because they had the "Epic Slide 4G" that phone made as much of an impact on me in regards to emulation as much as the PSP did... Hey Russ, another great video. To shave down some of the thickness, I hope they consider thumb stick sliders instead of the joystick-style design (not sure what to call that). Also, after Nintendo’s shenanigans, I’ve been really happy to see how the community of creators have rallied behind you and put a spotlight on the injustice. I know I’m not alone in thinking there should be a “keeping Nintendo honest” fund that creators can use when they need to make a case for fair use. Let’s get a GoFundMe set up!

the thing I like about this controller is that unlike most of those on the market it allows me to use the USB C input, which means that I can connect it to the computer (with a mini HDMI to USB C adapter) and use it as a screen for my PC without lag/latency problems that I would have using Moonlight/Steamlink, then I can connect headphones while playing, or maybe keep it charged, again thanks to that usable USB C input, furthermore it seems comfortable and compact (even if I don't love the positioning of the l1/l2 and r1/r2 keys horizontally...I prefer them vertically)

Been thinking of a controller design like this for a while. When I saw his post on the controller on Reddit I started to think of ways to innovate the idea. Biggest thing for me would be making the controller portion something that can pop out of the back shell. That way you can just make new back shells to size for different phone models, but keep the same internals. It would also be a lot more consumer friendly in my opinion. Second thing is what Russ mentioned the analog sticks need to be the small analog stick from something like the Odin 2 mini. Lastly the inline shoulder buttons I think changing one set of them either(L1,R1 or L2,R2) to be a back/paddle based design would increase the usability significantly. A suggestion for the sliding mechanism is look into these metal ball plungers. They can help with the sliding action being balls and help with retention so you’re not locked in. Hopefully with some proper PCB design and better external material construction you can slim down the design some more.

Fantastic idea and the final product feels like it would be successful. I personally think with the extra girth this gives your phone, it should 100% double as a battery. Getting an extra hour or two of juice for your phone with it attached would be fantastic for gaming.

Something other than a handheld. Love it.

I'll definitely be open to buying one of these once it comes out. I do hope they can make it as thin as possible.

It’s a great idea. Will be interesting to see how it’s made to work for phones of all shapes and sizes. Maybe offer many different magnetic or snap on back plates that you can slide the controller part into that way you can either buy or print the backplate that corresponds to your phone and slide the controller in as and when you need it?

Can't get the notification site to load so we must've killed it. Will check back later but this is a really cool design

This was the hard part, but now he should make a thick phone case to wear on your belt, just like the ones we have now but thick enough to hold the phone with the controller attached.

This is sick. I can't believe nobody has ever thought of this before and would buy one in a heartbeat! I was literally just thinking about getting one of Ambernic's handhelds to supplement my ROG Ally for on the go sessions and this seems like a way better use of my money.
